Sketch of Explorations by the late John M'Kinlay in the Interior of Australia, 1861-2. Being a paper read before the Cowal Society, Oct. 28, 1878

Glasgow: Aird & Coghill for the Cowal Society, 1881. Small slim octavo, 48 pages, portrait frontispiece and decorated title page, full page map, occasional vignettes, cloth a little rubbed at extremities otherwise a fine fresh copy. An exceptionally rare Australian exploration title. McKinlay led the South Australian Burke and Wills Relief Expedition, which went on to explore north of Lake Eyre, missed its appointment with a ship at the Gulf of Carpentaria, and finally made it to Port Denison. This particular account was published some twenty years later, after his death, by the Glasgow society of which he had been president. Ferguson could record only a single private copy of this important inland exploration account, and a single institutional copy (State Library of Victoria), while noting that the Mitchell and National Libraries both hold facsimiles. Wantrup could cite only the sale of the Glover copy in 1970, and another copy which changed hands privately in 1976. He points out that it is 'of quite notable rarity… Only a few collectors will ever have the opportunity to purchase a copy'.

Tasmanian Friends and Foes: Feathered, Furred and Finned

Marcus Ward, London 1881 - Small quarto, with eight chromolithographic plates, a fine copy in original splendid gilt decorated cloth. Second edition of a beautifully illustrated Australian natural history book, specially written for children by pioneer Tasmanian novelist Louisa Anne Meredith. Louisa migrated to Australia in 1839 tp join her husband Charles who enjoyed mixed fortunes in the colony. As a young woman in England, Louisa was remarkable for her outspoken political views and public support of the Chartists. Life in Van Diemen's Land held it's own challenges, and despite the lonliness and isolation of pioneering life Louisa maintained a steady literary and artistic output. The abundant natural history fascinated her: 'she studied plants, insects, seaweeds and fish of Tasmania's east coast and was an active member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and an honorary member of the Tasmanian Royal Society' (DNB). During the four years Louisa lived at Port Sorrell she diligently recorded everything of interest. One such event was the disappearance in 1846 of three little girls and a boy in the Sassafras Valley, later found by Louisa's husband Charles. This dramatic rescure was fictionalised in Tasmanian Friends and Foes, and although the book primarily describes animal life for younger readers topics such as convict servants and the Aborigines are encountered. Large archive of original art, sketches, studies and notebooks by Max Weber and Helaine Blum

n.p., n.d. - Large archive of original art, sketches, studies and notebooks by Max Weber and Helaine Blum. The collection documents the working student- teacher relationship between the two artists - with many of the notebooks having been used in Weber's lessons to Blum. The worksby Weber, both sketches and finished, show his move from the abstraction prevalent in his early work to his later representational style. Blum's work included here encompasses her lesson notebooks as well as sketches and studies used in preparation for her sculptural work. In addition, the collection includes 2 notebooks ascribed by Helaine Blum to George Grosz, and a large oil portrait by Blum's daughter Maryann, as well as two books on art given by Weber to Blum; one with an intimate inscription, the other with his notes and extra-illustrated with original sketches. Max Weber (1881-1961) immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 10. He travelled extensively before returning to New York to become integral to the Cubist movement in America. Helaine Blum (c. 1910-2010), was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to a wealthy family. She travelled extensively throughout Europe before finally settling in New York to focus on painting and sculpture, under the tutelage of Max Weber and William Zorach. Her relationship with Weber became particularly close - the two corresponded for decades on matters personal and professional, including their thoughts on art, creativity, travel, and social and religious issues (primarily Judaism). Blum enjoyed tremendous success as a sculptor, producing bronze busts of the great luminaries of her day, including Albert Einstein, Linus Pauling, Max Weber, and David Ben-Gurion. A brief inventory of the collection follows. Max Weber: 16 sketchbooks with studies, sketches and teaching notes; approximately 131 loose works, including still lifes, nudes and figure studies, and abstracts, executed in a variety of media (graphite, charcoal, watercolor); 13 portraits done in a variety of media, includingone portrait of Helaine Blum; 5 framed pieces, including abstracts and still lifes. Helaine Blum: 5 sketchbooks, some of which were used during lessons with Max Weber; approximately 91 loose works, including street scenes, still lifes, figure studies, landscapes and sketches used in preparation for her bust of David Ben Gurion, executed in a variety of media(oil on board, graphite, charcoal, watercolor); 3 framed pieces. George Grosz: 2 sketchbooks, one with approximately 51 sketches, the other with 38 pages of drawings and sketches Maryann Blum: large oil portrait of George C. Marshall Weber, Max. Essays on Art. [New York] : [Printed by William Edwin Rudge], 1916. First Edition. Original illustrated wraps; pp. 77. Inscribed by the artist, "To Helaine with love eternal from Max." Yapp edges lightly wrinkled and chipped, otherwise fine. Einstein, Carl. Negerplastik. Munchen: Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1920. First Edition. Illustrated paper over boards, cloth backstrip, lettered in black; pp. xxvii (text), [3], 108 b/w plates. Boards a bit scuffed and scratched. With Max Weber's ownership signature on the FFEP and his handwritten notes and sketches in the margins. Also includes a laid-in sketch by Weber with his notes. A fascinating look at a sculptor's engagement with his medium, its variety and history, Weber comments on 35 of the sculptures shown here -- "how elemental!!!" he says of one, "more real and living expression than the style of Brancusi or even Modigliani" he remarks of another. He also sometimes echoes the images with a sketch of his own, or subjects them to careful scrutiny, as indicated by measurements or lines breaking the piece up into smaller parts. Most of his notes are in the wide margins, with a few penciled direct on the image . Very good, in general [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Illuminated Manuscript

, 1881 1881. Full Morocco. Fine. A richly illuminated Victorian manuscript notable for its great variety of ornamentation and done by a woman famous in her day. 4to. 28 by 24 cm. 59 leaves of heavy card, each with illuminatiion. The illluminator, Edith Baird, was the "Queen of Chess" in her day. She wrote several books on chess problems, most notably, "Seven Hundred Chess Problems", Henry Sotheran, 1902, "The Twentieth Century Retractor", also Henry Sotheran, 1907. She was the daughter of a poet, Thomas WInter-Wood, who wrote under the name of "Vanguard" and who also was a chess master, as were two of Edith's brothers. The verse contained in this album do not bear titles. Edith Baird may have written some or all of the poems, but nothing definite can be said about their authorship. In addition to English, some verse is in German and French. While there are references to heaven and God, the poems are more spiritual than religious. Several of the leaves are illustrated with no poetry at all. While Ms. Baird's chess expertise might not seem germane to the book at hand, one can not help but note that the same meticulous thought with which she attacked the thorny challenges of the game she applied to her artwork, with its precise attentiion to detail. She also exhibits real originality in her painting. While drawing inspiration from Gothic, Celtic, the Medieval, Renaissance and Arabic ornamentation, she fused these influences in imaginative ways, and she managed to steer clear of repeating herself, notwithstanding the heft of the album she created. Other than a missing brass piece for the clasp to latch onto on the front board, this album is wonderfully well-preserved.

        Hyeres les Palmiers, 1881

1881. Aquarell mit Deckweiß als Hintergrund auf Papier, Signatur unten rechts: "Hyeres les Palmieres 20. Febr: 81.', Papier & Darstellung: 22,7 cm x 14,5 cm.

Personal Records of the Kandahar Campaign by Officers engaged therein

London: David Bogue, 1881. London: David Bogue,, 1881. Edited and Annotated, with an Introduction… Octavo. Original brown pebble-grained cloth, title gilt to spine, geometric panelling in black to the upper board, in blind to the lower, grey-green floral sprigged endpapers. A little rubbed, lower corners through, small inked library mark "Orotava Library" and paper label to the front pastedown, from hinge just started, quite heavy foxing to the verso of the free endpapers and by contact to the half-title and last leaf of the catalogue, otherwise isolated to the edges with minor encroachment to the margins, overall a very good copy. First edition of an important and uncommon source for the Second Afghan War. "Major Walter [sic] Ashe has compiled a group of twenty-three letters written by several unnamed officers of the British Army during the Second Afghan War… [they] focus mainly on General Burrow's disastrous defeat at Maiwand, and the consequent relief force led by General Roberts… While unquestioning of the British presence in Afghanistan, the variable quality of British generalship does not pass unnoticed. Although written by various individuals, they form a coherent whole in theme and prose quality" (Riddick). Ashe was also author of The Story of the Zulu Campaign (1880) and translator of The Military Institutions of France (1869). The Barrow-built steamship Orotava was launched in 1889 for the Liverpool-Valparaiso service of Pacific Steam Navigation Company, she made two voyages in that service in 1889, and was then placed under Orient Line management for service from Liverpool to Australia via Suez. She was transferred to the Royal Mail's West Indies service in 1909, served as an armed merchant cruiser during World War I, and was broken up in 1919.
