SWISS ALPS: Two Original Watercolour Views of the Jungfrau and Monte Rosa Mountains in the Swiss Alps].

1881 - June 1882 - May 1884. Two watercolours on paper: ca. 17x25,5 cm (6 ¾ 10 in) and ca. 12x17 (4 ¾ x 6 ¾ in), mounted on larger album leaves, ca. 25,5x33 cm (10x13 in). Signed "A.D." in the lower corners, captioned and dated on the lower margins of the mounts. Minor mild foxing of the mounts, otherwise very good watercolours. Two attractive watercolours of the Swiss Alps include a large blue-tone sketch of the ruined Unspunnen Castle in the Bernese Alps, with the summit of Jungfrau in the background. Dated June 12 1882, the watercolour was created just eight years after the first winter ascent of Jungfrau by American mountaineers Meta Brevoort and her nephew W.A.B. Coolidge. Another watercolour depicts a serene sunset over Monte Rosa, the highest peak in Switzerland, taken from Varese, Italy in May 1884. The artist was Irish watercolourist Augusta Drummond, an acquaintance of renowned poet and artist Edward Lear (1812-1888). She was born in Kilberry, Kildare, Ireland to Robert Verschoyle and Catherine Curtis. On 5th July 1878 she married Captain Alfred Manners Drummond, nephew of 6th Duke of Rutland, Captain of the Rifle Brigade, discriminating art collector, acquaintance and client of Edward Lear. The couple had a honeymoon trip to India in 1878, and subsequently travelled to continental Europe and Australia; the travel impressions were realized by Augusta in a series of skillful watercolours. One of them depicting Tasmania and titled "Browns River near Hobart Town" is now in the collection of the National Library of Australia.

Condition: In a full cloth binding with paper spine label. Externally, sound with some minor shelfwear and bumping to edges. Rear hinge a trifle strained. Internally, firmly bound.         DALZIELS' BIBLE GALLERY: ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT FROM ORIGINAL DRAWINGS

New York: Scribner & Welford, 1881. New York: Scribner & Welford, 1881.  First US edition, 42 x 35cm [folio], in ¾ leather over publisher's vellum boards w/gilt & red title & design to fr. cover, 67 unpaginated card-stock leaves w/72 proof wood engravings by the Dalziels printed on India paper laid on rectos.  Stated Limited Edition (73/1000) printed at the Camden Press, London.  By 1862 the Dalziel Brothers were making preparations for an illustrated edition of the Bible, & over several years commissioned drawings from many of the finest illustrators of the period.  However, for various reasons the project never reached fruition, & 72 of the 90 accumulated engravings were finally publ. w/o biblical text, in 2 sizes: a bound regular edition of 1000 numbered copies; & a large De Luxe issue of 100 vellum-backed portfolios w/the loose-leaf sheets laid in.  Because the regular issue was priced at 5 guineas, "our Bible commercially speaking, was a dead failure,... some 200 copies being all that were sold. The balance of the number printed were disposed of at prices which we will not here record" ("Brothers Dalziel" 1901, p.256).  This "balance" was acquired by Scribner & Welford of New York, who sold them in "[port]folio, vellum, & calf" for US$35.00 each (contemp. advert).  The present copy is one of these.  Binding Good (rebacked & recornered w/russet pigskin, new facsimile floral ep.s [the original ep. leaves are inserted at rear], & some rubbing & staining to boards w/moderate loss to title); contents Good (outer edges of some leaves tidemarked & darkened [plates are clean]).  White 146 ("the praise lavished on these designs is amply justified; the book is monumental") & passim, Reid 49 ("the most sumptuous of all our books") & passim, Fredeman 90.12, Ray 158 ("the artistic level is surely higher than that in any other of the Dalziels' collaborative volumes"), Goldman 50 & passim.  Heavy item--additional shipping required.

A Narrative of the Voyage of the Argonauts in 1880

n.p: Printed for the Argonauts., 1881.. b/w photo plates. 134 pp. “Compiled by the bard from the most authentic records, illustrated by the photographer...” This is a privately printed account of a steam yacht tour of Iceland and the Faero Islands. The "Argo" was a 580 ton steam yacht built by Scott’s, Greenock in 1875. These were rich folks, no mistake! The narrative is charming enough, but the notable part of this book are the photographs taken by Richard Caton. The book is inscribed by him on the front blank. Scarce. Worldcat shows only five libraries holding copies. Sewing a little loose, but still VG in original red cloth. Spine lightly sunned, covers a bit soiled.

        Charles Guitau [Guiteau]

York County, Pennsylvania: Unpublised manuscript Lyrics Circa 1881. Lyrics of the famous folk ballad describing Guiteau's assassination of President James A. Garfield, his trial, and his execution. On both sides of one 4.5"x8" sheet of blue-lined writing paper, embossed "Waverly." The writing is legible, however the paper has toned. One border of the sheet as well as a center-fold have old tape reinforcements. Initially, many thought that Guiteau had composed this ballad while in jail awaiting execution, however the lyrics are actually based upon The Lamentation of James Rogers, a broadside ballad about a murderer executed in 1858. This ballad's lyrics, which were not published in broadside, song sheet, or as sheet music became very popular and spread orally throughout the eastern half of the United States. One variation of the lyrics was first published in Louise Pound's American Ballads and Songs in 1922. In this manuscript of the lyrics, Allie R. Thompson identifies herself as the ballad's author, clearly signing the work, "Written by Allie R Thompson." (In another Thompson manuscript, The Rosewood Coffin, she makes it clear that she did not compose, but only copied that ballad from a newspaper, the "Hopewell News." Also in that manuscript, Thompson notes she was from York County, Pennsylvania, which is the location of Hopewell Township.) . Leaf. Good to Very Good.

The Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage of the British Empire for 1881

ONT>, 1881. ONT>, 1881 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An early edition of Foster's genealogical compendium. With an illustrated title page, and lavishly illustrated with heraldic crests and arms throughout. With publisher's advertisments to the front and rear. Joseph Foster (9 March 1844 29 July 1905) was an English genealogist whose transcriptions of records held by the Inns of Court and Oxford University are still important historical resources. Foster was born at Sunniside, Sunderland and developed an interest in genealogy at an early age. He worked initially as a printer in London but undertook genealogical research as well, becoming friends with several heralds of arms during his life. His first publication, in 1862, was on his Quaker ancestry. He followed this with research into the histories of various families from the north of England. His major works, still used by historians, were transcriptions of the admission registers of the Inns of Court (published in 1885 as Men at the Bar) and of the matriculation registers of the University of Oxford for the period 1500 to 1886 (published as Alumni Oxonienses). This latter work was marked by the award of an honorary MA by the University in 1892. It has been said of Foster that he was no scholarly antiquary, but his energy as a transcriber and collector of genealogical and heraldic data has few parallels, and many of his publications remained classic resources, several of permanent value. Condition: In decorative cloth binding. Externally rubbed and marked, with wear to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD..

The Boy Preacher or, The Life and Labors of Rev. Thomas Harrison Together with Sketches of the Most Remarkable Revivals in Which He Has Been Engaged

Printed by James P. Magee and "all Methodist Book Depositories in the United States, 1881. Printed by James P. Magee and "all Methodist Book Depositories in the United States, 1881. Hardcover. Octavo. 240 pp. 7.5'' by 4.5'' Bound in brown/black boards with gold stamping. "The Boy Preacher" is an extremely rare volume of Americana from the late 19th Century. This handsome volume details the work of Reverend Thomas Harrison, one of the "boy preachers" during the great American religious (tent) revivals of that century. Known for their great oratory powers before coming of age they've remained one of the most curious aspects of that period in American religious history. Very few concurrent histories were written of their careers and lives, this being one of the few. Written by a fellow admiring preacher the content of the text is as poetically written as it is informative of the age. | The condition of the volume is Very Good considering its age and rarity. The binding is solid and tight, the boards show minimal signs of age wear, the spine has begun fraying at the topmost and bottomost, but does not come close to obscuring the spine text and remains tight, now protected in a polyester archival cover. There is edge and corner wear present, but not unrepairable and now stopped with the application of the archival cover. There is a single minor stain that has bled through to page 40, but which does not obscure any of the text whatsoever. The text itself is bright and clean with the exception of two former owner names on each successive front free endpapers. No warping whatsoever. Very little fading considering the volume's age. An exceptional, one of a kind volume as pictured.

Mother Goose or the Old Nursery Rhymes

London and New York - George Routledge andSons, 1881. London and New York - George Routledge andSons, 1881 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of Mother Goose or the Old Nursery Rhymes with colour illustrations to each page by Kate Greenaway. The familiar figure of Mother Goose is an imaginary author of a collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymes which are often published as Mother Goose Rhymes. As a character, she appears in one nursery rhyme. Mother Goose is generally depicted in literature and book illustration as an elderly country woman in a tall hat and shawl, a costume identical to the peasant costume worn in Wales in the early 20th century, but is sometimes depicted as a goose (usually wearing a bonnet). Catherine Greenaway (1846 - 1901), known as Kate Greenaway, was an English children's book illustrator and writer. She studied at what is now the Royal College of Art in London, which at that time had a separate section for women, and was headed by Richard Burchett. Her first book, Under the Window (1879), a collection of simple, perfectly idyllic verses about children, was a bestseller. Greenaway's paintings were reproduced by chromoxylography, by which the colours were printed from hand-engraved wood blocks by the firm of Edmund Evans. Through the 1880s and 1890s, her only rivals in popularity in children's book illustration were Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott. With bookseller's label to front pastedown and with an ink inscription dated 1881 to front free endpaper. Condition: Rebacked in a cloth binding with original buckram boards. Externally, with slightwear to extremities and marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with handling marks to pages and the odd slight marginal tidemark. With previous repairs tosome pages where there has been slight loss and closed tears. With previous owner's initial ink stamp torear endpaper. Overall: GOOD.

Letterpress title mounted on verso of the front free endpaper (as issued), 50 letterpress text leaves mounted on the verso of plates. 60 albumen photographs (1 photograph of a map, 59 photographs of objects in the collection). Contemporary red pebble grained morocco, upper cover elaborately bordered in gilt and blind and titled in gilt in the central panel, spine with raised bands in six compartments, tooled in gilt on either side of each band, metal clasp and latch, silk moire endpapers. Scarce photographically illustrated catalogue of the Cesnola Collection, the most significant collection of Cypriot antiquities ever assembled. "The story of the Cesnola Collection is almost as colorful as that of its creator, Luigi Palma di Cesnola. After a military career in both Europe and the American Civil War, Cesnola was appointed American consul in Cyprus in 1865. During the next few years, he amassed an unrivalled collection of Cypriot antiquities through extensive excavations and by purchase. The whole enterprise was funded from his own resources. At the time, a number of antiquarians from various European countries were beginning to collect Cypriot antiquities, but they were soon outmatched by Cesnola, who came to dominate the scene in Cyprus. Cesnola saw his work as rivalling that of Heinrich Schliemann at Troy and intended his discoveries on Cyprus to provide important evidence for the so-called missing link between the biblical and classical worlds. The final destination of the Cesnola Collection was for a long time uncertain. In 1870, negotiations were held first with Napoleon III of France, who wished to acquire the entire collection for the Musée du Louvre in Paris, then with Russian officials for their possible transfer to the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. But soon afterward, Cesnola shipped the collection to London, where its exhibition aroused considerable public interest. It was at this point that the newly founded Metropolitan Museum of Art intervened and acquired the bulk of the collection for New York. The purchase was funded by public subscription with several leading business tycoons making substantial contributions. Cesnola accompanied his collection back to New York and devoted himself to supervising the work on its installation and publication. In 1877, he accepted a place on the Museum's board of trustees and served as its first director from 1879 until his death in 1904. The Cesnola Collection remains a wonderful storehouse of ancient art and artifact, and it is by far the most important and comprehensive collection of Cypriot material in the Western Hemisphere. The objects illustrate the unique character of Cypriot art and highlight the exotic blend of Greek, Near Eastern, and Egyptian influences in Cyprus throughout antiquity" (Metropolitan Museum website). This early photographically illustrated catalogue of the collection is quite scarce, with OCLC locating but 12 copies. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
