Autograph manuscript unsigned.

[Paris, autumn 1881]. - 8vo (210 x 133 mm). 1 p. A curious manuscript in the hand of Pasteur with fascinating content as the French chemist begins preparations for a lecture: "Do you know what to us is the charm of your studies? Do you know, if you will allow me to speak thus, what is the enchantment of science? It is that we can provide the proof of our principles. Who can give that, this proof of principles, in politics, religion, even in morals? Who can put into the precision of formulas human passions and their sometimes terrible effects, for example the assassination of a Garfield by a dreadful madman [ ]". - No doubt Pasteur wrote the present draft in the autumn of 1881 after President James A. Garfield was shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau, a rejected and disillusioned Federal office seeker on 2 July 1881. Garfield died on 19 September 1881.

Extremities rubbed, some scuffing and bumping to head and tail of spine, gilt undimmed but spine darkened. VERSES (Wise/Forman Piracy)

London: Privately Printed, 1881 (but in fact ca.1887). Pirated edition, 20 x 12.5cm [8vo], in original beige stiff paper wraps w/printed title to fr. cover, a.e. untrimmed, [1-7] 8-12 [13-14] pp. +2 blank leaves to fr. & 1 to rear. Printed, likely by Henry Clay & Sons, on watermarked "Van Gelder" handmade paper. As W.E. Fredeman has indicated (see his "Story of a Lie" below), this is the 1st of many piratical collaborations by Thomas James Wise & Harry Buxton Forman. While Carter & Pollard suspected it was a forgery (see their Dossier 218), Barker & Collins proved its "higher degree of culpability" by identifying the typeface as "not manufactured until 1883." In Nov. 1887 Forman wrote: "Some friends of Rossetti's have printed ... a very pretty pamphlet with the title 'Verses ...'; but the whole issue must have been extremely small" (see Fredeman's "Story of a Lie" below, pp.276-77). Binding Very Good (upper & lower spine starting); contents Near-Fine. Rossetti 1905 pp.17 & 28 (WMR was duped into including this item by Wise & W.F. Prideaux), Ashley IV 144 (1 of 3 copies on vellum), Fredeman 23.10, W.E. Fredeman "The Story of a Lie" ("Review" Vol. 7 1985) passim, W.E. Fredeman "WMR & the Wise-Forman Conspiracy" ("Book Collector" Spring 1987) passim, Colbeck under 6 (p.693).

CRONACA BIZANTINA. Periodico letterario, sociale, artistico.

Two Charcoal Drawings for Stained Glass, Late 19th Century

Offered here are two superb and large original charcoal drawings for stained glass. They are done by Iday Kay (1881-1959), circa 1900, a promising artist and designer at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art. According to Peter Cormack, (noted scholar of 19th- and 20th-century British and American stained glass, William Morris, and the Arts and Crafts Movement), Ida Kay was one of the stained glass students taught by the famed Henry A. Payne at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art in the early 1900s. The labels refer to their inclusion in the National Competition for Schools of Art, in which the work of the award-winning entries (from students throughout the UK) was exhibited at the South Kensington (now Victoria & Albert) Museum. In a 1906 issue of the ?"The Art Workers' Quarterly,?" under the heading, ?"Arts and Crafts Exhibition at Grafton Gallery,?" the following is offered: ?"The beautiful series by Walter Crane were shown… the Committee of the Society again offered to the public, in the present exhibition, the results of its selection… Phoebe Traquair… Misses May Morris… and the beautiful series by Walter Crane. The new quarters of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society hass the advantage of greater facilities for the display of stained glass and the works were of high merit, under the superintendence of Mr. Henry A. Payne.. a panel very rich in colour represented the ?"Wine of Circe,?" by Ida Kay?"[neither of the two being sold here]. The charcoal drawings are superbly rendered, large size, and full of the gentle line and aesthetic Arts and Crafts flair distinctive of the movement at the turn of the century in England. Essays on the Floating-Matter of the Air in relation to Putrefaction and Infection

London: Longmans, Green, 1881. FIRST EDITION. Original red publisher's cloth, binding almost invisibly restored. IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. Octavo. xx, 338 pp. + 2 pp. advertisements THE DISCOVERY OF PENICILIUM: "The penicillium was exquisitely beautiful" (p. 114). "In every case where the mould was thick and coherent, the bacteria died or became dormant and fell to the bottom as a sediment" (p. 116). Tyndall only marked and studied the physical properties of penicillium, or what we now know as (Penicillium notatum). He observed that penicillium was able to destroy bacteria falling into the tubes from the air, but he did not know at that time that bacteria could cause disease. * "One might ask why Tyndall, having observed that this exquisitely beautiful mold (which we now know was Penicillium notatum) was capable of destroying bacteria, contented himself with remarking on its physical and bacteriocidal capacities without exploring the second phenomenon further. The reason is clear. He discovered the antibacterial property of the Penicillium seven years before Robert Koch in 1882 proved that bacteria could cause disease. If Tyndall had known that most infectious diseases were caused by bacteria, it is extremely unlikely that he would have continued to interest himself in the cloudlike array of bacteria in the atmosphere. Rather, he would have immediately revealed his observations to his medical friends. Not knowing that bacteria caused infections, he was content to limit his observations to a few brief sentences that were buried in a seventy-four page article describing the disposition of bacterial and other particles of the atmosphere" (Meyer Friedland, "Medicine's 10 Greatest Discoveries" pp. 169-172; Friedman was the owner of THIS COPY of Tyndall's book -- see below). * Garrison-Morton claim: "Tyndall interested himself in atmospheric germs and dust. His experiments on sterilization by heat led him to the discovery in 1877 of fractional sterilization (Tyndallization). His work on the subject is included in the above book, in which he also described the bactericidal effects of moulds. The researches of Tyndall, even more than those of Pasteur, dealt the final blow to the doctrine of spontaneous generation; they were fundamental for the progress of bacteriology" (No. 2495). * CONTENTS: On dust and disease.-- Optical deportment of the atmosphere in relation to putrefaction and infection.-- Further researches on the deportment and vitality of putrefactive organisms.-- Fermentation, and its bearings on survey and medicine.-- Spontaneous generation. * PROVENANCE: From the library of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet (with bookplate inside upper cover [-withdrawn-] and with the large bookplate of Meyer Friedman, M.D. Friedman (1910-2001) was a pre-eminent cardiologist who (with R.H. Rosenman) coined the phrase "Type A personality" to describe chronically angry and impatient people whose behavior increases their risk of heart attack. Friedmas was the author of hundreds of articles and books, including "Medicine's 10 Greatest Discoveries" (Yale University Press, 1998) in which Tyndale's discovery is described in great detail. * REFERENCES: DSB XIII, 521-4. Street Incidents

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1881. 4to. (10 5/8 x 8 inches). [4], 45-100pp. 21 woodburytypes, each with printed caption and red ruled border. Publisher's green pictorial cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and black (expertly recased) "The first photographic social documentation of any kind" (Gernsheim). Thomson's photographs in Street Life in Londonand the present Street Incidents , and the commentary upon the images by Thomson and Adolphe Smith, depict a London in which life is a harsh and continuous struggle. The characters on view here are familiar to us more from Dickens' novels or from an idea of the Whitechapel of Jack the Ripper than from any nostalgic image of a strait-laced or patrician Victorianism. Thomson and Smith are, however, sympathetic to the objects of their study and seem intent on cataloguing the variety of types to be found rather than attempting any Barnum-like freakshow. As Thomson himself writes: "The precision and accuracy of photography enables us to present true types of the London poor and shield us from the accusation of either underrating or exaggerating individual peculiarities of appearance."It is "a pioneering work of social documentation in photographs and words ... one of the most significant and far-reaching photobooks in the medium's history" (Parr & Badger). This copy the second abridged issue, with variant title (i.e., renamed Street Incidents ) and complete with 21 plates and text leaves numbered 45-100. The history of the production of this issue is not well known. However, internal evidence, when compared to the first edition of Street Life , which contains 36 photographs and text leaves numbered 1-100, reveal that Street Incidents comprises everything from Street Life , both text and photographs, following page 44. The only changes would appear to be additional plate numbers below the captions, as well as page numbers above the images. It would seem likely that the publisher had a remainder of the latter portion of Street Life , and re-issued what was available with a new title, without credit to Thomson, as a new work. The images in Street Incidents comprise: A Convict's Home; The Wall Worker; Covent Garden Labourers; Halfpenny Ices; Black Jack; The Cheap Fish of St. Giles; Cast-iron Billy; Worker's on the "Silent Highway"; The Street Fruit Trade; The London Boardmen; The Water-cart; "Mush-Fakers" and Ginger-Beer Makers; November Effigies; "Hookey Alf" of Whitechapel; The Crawlers; Italian Street Musicians; The Street Locksmith; The Seller of Shell-fish; Flying Dustmen; Old Furniture; The Independent Shoeblack. Cf. Hasselblad 42; cf. Gernsheim, p. 447; cf. Truthful Lens 169; cf. Parr & Badger I:p.48.
