        Tramp Abroad (Salesman's Dummy)

1879. TWAIN, Mark. A Tramp Abroad [Salesman’s Dummy]. Hartford, Connecticut: American Publishing Company, 1879. Slim octavo, original gilt- and blind-stamped brown cloth. $4200.Original salesman’s dummy for A Tramp Abroad, with engraved frontispiece portrait, select illustrations and excerpts, and samples of the gilt-decorated cloth spine and morocco swatch affixed to front pastedown, and a sample of publisher’s calf affixed to rear pastedown. In A Tramp Abroad, “besides his accounts of Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, Twain includes local folklore (some of which he made up) and slips in several sketches that have little or nothing to do with Europe, including one of his most famous comic tales, ‘Jim Baker’s Bluejay Yarn” (MacDonnell, 42). Twain called the work “a gossipy volume… written by one loafer for a brother loafer to read” (LeMaster & Wilson, 743). Salesman’s dummies (also called salesman’s samples or prospectuses) were meant to be taken door-to-door to show potential subscribers. The front cover of the dummy is identical to the published book, while the text consists of several sections of the book (primarily those pages with some of the book’s many illustrations). The book was offered in full cloth with a sprinkled edge or gilt edge, in a library-style leather binding, or in half morocco or half calf. At the rear of the volume is a page of reviews, a full-page advertisement, ten leaves of ruled paper intended to be filled with orders (with the headings: “Subscribers’ Names,” “Residences,” and “Style of Binding”), and the publisher’s two-page current “Catalogue of Books.” The frontispiece portrait is the preferred first state (with the underlying lines in the left hand lapel vertical rather than slanted), and the wood-engraving of Moses is also the first state (bearing the caption “Moses,” rather than “Titian’s Moses”). See BAL 3386. Johnson, 35. McBride, 60. Text fine, with only a few marks of handling, light rubbing to extremities of original cloth. A near-fine copy.

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1879. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (224 x 139 mm). xxiv, 156 pp., text illustrations and two engraved plates by Felizat. Original printed wrappers bound in. Fine cherry-colour full morocco binding by Canape.R.D dated 1926, spine with 5 raised bands gilt-lettered in first compartment, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, morocco turn-ins with gilt-ruled borders. Provenance: Victor Hugo. Carte de visite by Louis Pasteur and small portrait photograph sticked to second blank leaf. ----Norman 1660; Cushing P142; Heirs of Hippocrates 1900; Osler 1552. - FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY PASTEUR on the half-title: "A monsieur Victor Hugo, de l'Academie francaise, Hommage de profond respect, L. Pasteur." A rare instance, linking two of the greatest French men of the 19th century: one of the founders of modern medicine, Louis Pasteur, and the literary giant Victor Hugo, author of Les misérables or Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Louis Pasteur arguably was a great admirer of Victor Hugo. In a manuscript dated February 7, 1885, just a few months before the death of the great poet, he writes: "L'enfant sublime, comme l'a nomme Chateaubriand, a merite d'etre appele le sublime vieillard. Whereas Victor Hugo was elected a member of the Academie francaise on January 7, 1841 at the age of just 39, Pasteur became a member of this academy rather late, on December 8, 1881, a few days before his 60th birthday. The academy was an exclusive society made up of 40 of France's most important people. We know of at least one other copy of this book containing a dedication by Pasteur to a member of the Academie, Émile Littré, with an almost identical wording: "A monsieur Littre, de l'Academie francaise, Hommage de profond respect, L. Pasteur." Could it be possible that Pasteur presented copies of his book to members of the Academie to gain support for his election campaign? Regarding the book itself, Pierre Bertholet, an opponent of Pasteur's controversial theory of fermentation, published a posthumous and unauthorized version of some notes by Claude Bernard, a supporter of Pasteur's, which claimed to have isolated a soluble chemical produced by yeast that caused fermentation, in contrast to Pasteur's theory. Pasteur's bitter reply strengthened his conviction that fermentation was life without air, a belief he held until Eduard Buchner isolated a soluble alcoholic ferment in 1897. Near Fine.

The Old Fashioned Mother Goose Melodies Complete with Magic Colored Pictures

NY: G.W. Carleton, 1879. Sheppard, William Ludwell. Octavo. 16ff. Features sixteen color lift-the-flap illustrations (including the title page) in which the closed image illustrates the beginning of a verse and the open image depicts its conclusion. With numerous classic rhymes by Mother Goose, including the full versions of Old Mother Hubbard, and a rather unusual retelling of "Ten Little Indians," which adds several US-specific regional references ("Six Nantucket whalers" and "Five Nevada miners"), as well as two stereotypical and derogatory views of African-American youth ("Four naughty colored boys" robbing an apple tree and "Two little Nigs in Florida"). The illustrations are signed "WLS" in the plates, leading to the conclusion that they are by William Ludwell Sheppard, a southern illustrator whose drawings of African Americans are noted by Hamilton as having "a sympathetic truthfulness to nature born perhaps of the artist's Southern origin." The construction of this book makes the text block bulk only half the length of the boards, resulting in structural issues when combined with youthful use. This copy is, perhaps, the closest to new condition as one could hope for-the violet publisher's cloth, decorated in gilt and black, is unfaded and nearly unworn. Aside from a few very short marginal tears where the thin part of the text block meets the bulk in the middle, the book is internally fresh and bright.

Australian Steam Ship "Norfolk"... J. Pyne O'Callaghan, Commander.

London: published by John Day, October, 1879. Hand-coloured lithograph measuring 470 x 295mm. A handsome hand-coloured lithograph of Australian passenger steam ship Norfolk by eminent marine artist and lithographer Thomas Goldsworth Dutton. The Norfolk made several passages to Australia, running from Sydney and London between 1879 and 1882 - she was an impressive steamer, being the second largest non-naval vessel constructed on the Thames to that date.An article in the Melbourne Argus (6 November 1879) describes her prodigious size, being 'constructed on the girder principle, and of enormous strength having floors of considerable depth and thickness. Her masts are of iron in one length with yards of steel...' The Norfolk was capable of carrying 500 passengers in ample and well ventilated cabins in addition to 2,000 tons of freight and 1,300 tons of coal. Yet her Australian commission was to be relatively short lived. In 1882 Royal Mail Steam Packet Co purchased the Norfolk and renamed her La Plata, with her maiden South American voyage commencing in October of 1882.Dutton was a leading marine artist of his era. His printmaking is amply represented in the catalogue Macpherson collection of prints and drawings held at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich: 'his ship portraits were all-pervading in the nineteenth century. Fighting ships, merchant sailing ships and yachts all came alike to him. He died about 1882 and with him died maritime prints as we know them.'A copy of this lithograph is known in the Nan Kivell collection of the National Library. Closed tear affects lower blank margin, very good condition, mounted.

1879. Michel Lévy, Paris 1879, 15,5x23,5cm, relié. - Michel Lévy, Paris 1879, 15,5x23,5cm, relié. - Edizione originale. 1879 – 1881 ??. ?????????? ????? ????????? ?. ????????, ?. ??????? ? ?. ??????????. [Plan of the City of Tiflis compiled by the Engineers S. Umanskiy, A. Popov and P. Zamiatnin].

      - 1881 1879 - 42 sheets, including 34 larger and 8 smaller sheets (40 with contemporary hand colour; 2 – B&W); some light soiling. Contemporary calf over brown cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover; slightly rubbed, corners bumped. A large manuscript topographic map of the Georgian capital Tbilisi. The Caucasus Topographical Bureau was established in 1853 but the active mapping of the region started only after 1866 when Iyeronim Stebnitskiy (1832-1897) was appointed the head of the Bureau. Works in the region were first undertaken in the Northern Caucasus and progressed to the south. The efforts of the agency were interrupted by the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 – 1878, as most of the employees were relocated to the basin of the Black Sea charged with a task of researching the territories newly occupied by the Russian army. The plan offered here was produced following the end of the war when the Bureau was able to return to its routine work. It is drawn on 42 sheets in the scale of 1:2000 and shows the whole city of Tiflis centred on the Mt'k'vari River with all the topographic details, including the relief, streets and buildings. Sheets are numbered with corresponding rows and columns to be assembled into a single large wall map. This manuscript plan is almost identical to the "Plan of the City of Tiflis with Surroundings" published by Il'in in Saint-Petersburg in 1887 and was likely a basis for it. Russian manuscript plans of this scale and quality are very rare, especially in good condition and largely complete like here. Produced for the official use, the majority of them remained in the state archives and libraries. Istoricheskiy ocherk deyatelnosti korpusa voennykh topografov v [ ] v 1855 – 1880 gg. (Skt.         ALS signed M.E. Lewes to Sir Michael Foster, from The Heights, Witley, Sep. 26, '79. 'I enter feelingly into your trouble...'

1879 28 lines in purple ink on rectos only of single folded sheet, with mourning border on first page; one old fold. With stamped addressed envelope also with mourning border, torn when opened. The George Eliot Letters do not include any letters to Sir Michael Foster. Written on mourning paper after the death of her husband in November 1878, Eliot writes to Foster regarding the posthumous publication of the third series of George Henry Lewes' Problems of Life and Mind. Foster, a professor of Physiology at Cambridge, together with the Psychologist James Sully, edited Eliot's proofs of her partner's work, the first two parts of which had been published in 1874 and 1877. 'Today or tomorrow you will have received the last proof, which has come to me this morning... I am sending to the printer a short prefatory note of which I will ask him to forward you a proof if you think I have said anything remiss'. Eliot had written similarly to Sully on September 21st: 'You are almost at the end of your kind labours for me. I have five proofs by me awaiting your and Dr. Foster's notes... Do you object to my mentioning your name with Dr. Foster's in a brief prefatory note?' The volume was published in late 1879 and includes a brief acknowledgement of Foster and Sully's contribution. Eliot signs off her letter in humorous self-deprecation. 'As to being wearied of stupidity; I may vary the old saying & make it "He who hates stupidity hates mankind".'         Autograph letter signed, to George Campbell of Duntroon.

Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire: 1879. 4 pp., black bordered notepaper with crest. An attractive autograph letter from the explorer and governor of South Australia, Edward John Eyre, to 'Campbell' - evidently the pastoralist George Campbell.Eyre had first met George's father Robert Campbell as early as 1834 when he overlanded a great deal of stock for the prominent grazier. The connection between the two men continued when Eyre set off on his 1837 overland expedition to South Australia from Campbell's property at Limestone Plains (Duntroon). Robert Campbell died in 1846, and his property was divided up between his six surviving children.George was visiting England in 1879, and Eyre wrote him this lengthy note inviting him to visit them at The Grange. Written in Eyre's old age, at a time when he had retired to England after the furore surrounding his governorship of Jamaica, this letter shows him apparently enjoying his retirement, and commenting that 'It will be a great pleasure to meet you again and have a talk over old times'.In his note Eyre also comments on having recently heard from another of the Campbell boys, Charles, who had been chaperoning his son Harry around Sydney and the 1879 Exhibition before the latter sailed for Fiji. In fine condition.

Experiences of a Colonist Forty Years Ago, and a Journey from Port Phillip to South Asutralia in 1839.

Adelaide: Frearson and Brother, 1879. Octavo, with six woodcuts of sketches by the author; in modern half cloth. The distinctly rare first edition of this account of Hamilton's experiences droving a herd of sheep from Port Philip to Adelaide. He settled in South Australia on his arrival in 1839, and exhibited paintings in Adelaide's first two art exhibitions. In 1864 the Adelaide Advertiser praised his accurate renderings and said his drawings of horses "have no equals in the colony". Five of his drawings were engraved for Eyre's Journals of Discovery into Central Australia and, along with his contemporary S.T. Gill, his drawings were used to illustrate the published journals of Grey. He owned his own lithographic press and made prints from his drawings which made him, according to Robert Holden, probably the first print-maker in South Australia. In 1848 Hamilton was appointed second clerk in the Colonial Treasury, and subsequently entered the police force, serving as Commissioner of Police from 1867 to 1882. A good copy.

Experiences of a Colonist Forty Years Ago, and a Journey from Port Phillip to South Australia in 1839.

Adelaide: Frearson and Brother, 1879. Octavo, frontispiece and five wood engraved plates, in the publisher's gilt lettered cloth, bumped. A scarce and informative account of grazing life in south-eastern Australia, with vibrant and conversational descriptions of Port Phillip and Adelaide. The author, George Hamilton, worked as a grazier for many years before appointed an inspector of the mounted police in Adelaide in 1853. A prolific author and amateur artist, Hamilton was closely associated with Australian inland exploration and later attained the rank of police commissioner. This book relates early adventures including a detailed account of an overland journey from Port Phillip to Adelaide in the winter of 1839 with 350 head of cattle.Hamilton travelled the route used by Charles Bonney west from Port Phillip, following the coast until Lake Alexandrina and later crossing the Murray river at Wellington. With tremendous difficulty Bonney eventually reached Adelaide by traversing Mount Barker and the Lofty ranges to the east of the present-day city, having drunk the blood of a bullock for lack of water. The author narrates a glum warning he received (and promptly ignored) against taking this route from a fellow at the Port Phillip Club - 'This person was of the tribe of those friends who revel in the misfortunes of their neighbours, who sit near the fire on cold blustering nights and hug themselves lovingly, feeling the comfort of their position... ' Needless to say the journey was filled with danger and hardship, yet the author writes with good humour about his experiences in a vast and barely explored wilderness. His account is rich with descriptions of contact and trading with Aboriginal tribes, and is filled with curious natural history details and observations. A little rubbed and marked yet a very good copy.
