Notes by a Naturalist on the "Challenger" being an Account of Various Observations made during the Voyage of H.M.S. "Challenger" Round the World, in the Years 1872-76

London: Macmillan, 1879. First UK edition. Hardcover. Very good + condition. A fine description of zoology and botany, most in the Southern Hemisphere and Antarctic. Also visits Tristan Da Cunha, Kerguelen Land, the Falklands, Juan Fernandez, Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji & Cape York, Queensland. Spence 820. The Challenger Expedition was a massive scientific undertaking sponsored by the Royal Society to discover "everything about the sea". She was the first steam-driven ship to enter the Antarctic Circle. The expedition founded the modern science of oceanography, taking a daily chain of magnetic observations round the world, established 362 observation stations. At most of these, the depth was sounded, the sea dredged and samples of the seabed, as well as water samples and temperatures at intermediate levels, were taken. Atmospheric and meteorological observations were made and the rate and direction of the current measured. Thousands of new species of marine life were discovered. The British Library records only the 1892 edition. 'Of all his writings, Moseley's Notes of a Naturalist on the Challenger, is the one that appeals to the widest circle of readers and approaches Darwin's Journal of the Cruise of the Beagle in interest and importance' [DNB]. The work is dedicated to Charles Darwin. 8vo, xvi, 620pp, 2 colored plates, color folding map of the world showing ocean soundings. Fine binding signed by Mudie, with his stamp. Half dark blue calf and marbled boards. Gilt decorated spine, raised bands, gilt title at red calf label. One small abrasion at spine. Private library stamp at title and a few other leaves.

        THE SEASONS: A ROMAN IDYLL?WINTER - Alma-Tadema, 1879.

At the foot of one of the columns of a gallery or porch are three women round a brazier, who beguile the time by conversation and a mess of some sort, which one of them stirs on the fire and another tastes. Auguste Blanchard?s engraving share in this design is perhaps the picture?s greatest triumph. The purity of the subdued tones and the texture of the marble base of the column that forms the background by the side of which we have a glimpse of the snowy landscape, are beyond all praise.?Prijs: ?1.250,- (incl. lijst).

        Photograph. Crow Treaty Commission

1879. (INDIAN) HUFFMAN, L.A. Photograph. Crow Treaty Commission. [Washington, D.C.]: Huffman Milestown, 1879. Vintage collotype (measures 11-1/2 by 16 inches). $2600.Scarce vintage 1880 collotype of renowned western photographer L.A. HuffmanÂ’s handsome portrait of a delegation of prominent Crow chiefs, photographed by him during treaty negotiations in Washington, with his trademark “Huffman Milestown” signed in print at lower corner.Famed 19th-century photographer Laton Alton Huffman “made one of the most extensive and best-known 19th-century photographic records of the Cheyenne, Sioux, Crow and other Northern Plains tribes” (Sturtevant, North American Indian XI:27). Huffman, whose mentor was renowned western photographer Frank Jay Haynes, “captured the spirit of the American West perhaps better than any other artistÂ… One of HuffmanÂ’s greatest documentary contributions was photographing many of the great warriors” of Native American people, including many who became lifelong friends. To noted historian J. Frank Dobie, Huffman “has an enduring place alongside William H. Jackson as a pioneer photographer.” HuffmanÂ’s images were a major influence on “generations of painters who either directly copied his images or used then as compositional aids to complete their own work. Giants of western art such as Frederic Remington, Charlie Russell and Edward Borein collected Huffman photographs” (Peterson, xi, 67, 81-83).This very scarce large vintage Huffman collotype is from his photograph of a delegation of Crow chiefs, along with Indian Agent Keller and interpreters, taken in Washington D.C. in 1880. The splendid portrait speaks both to the dignity of the Crow leaders and to HuffmanÂ’s skill. Pictured are six Crow chiefs, Old Crow, Medicine Crow, Two Belly, Long Elk, Plenty Coups and Pretty Eagle, along with M. Quivey, Indian Agent Keller and Tom Stewart. In March 1880, in response to demands from white Montanans and railroads for a reduction in the Crow domain, this delegation was brought “to Washington D.C. to speak directly with the president.” According to Plenty CoupsÂ’ memoir, he was the first member of the delegation to be selected, and asked Two Belly, the senior River Crow chief, to accompany him. Agent R.A. Keller then chose Pretty Eagle, Medicine Crow, Long Elk and Old Crow. On arriving in Washington, the Crow delegation “showed remarkable spunk. It resisted pressure from the president and the secretary of the interiorÂ… In June 1880, the group agreed to a provisional treaty (in part because the Crows believed they would be held as hostages in Washington until they did so).” While the final agreement led to a substantial loss of land, it also “demonstrated that skillful leaders could calibrate their accommodation to American power, appearing friendly while resisting the white manÂ’s delays” (Hoxie, Parading Through History, 118-119). With “Huffman Milestown” signed in print at lower right corner; printed “Treaty Com.” at left corner mis-dated 1879. Containing printed names of all pictured at lower edge of print, with “Plenticus” corrected to “Plenty Coups” in an unidentified hand. Only tiny closed tear at upper margin not affecting image. A fine print.

Autograph Letter Signed 'Filopanti' to Rinaldo ANDREINI, (Giuseppe, 1812-1894, 'Quirico Filopanti')

1879 - (1818-1890, Italian Surgeon and Patriot), in Italian with translation, thanking him "for your invitation to the Congress of the League for Teaching, but I will only be able to take part with my good wishes", his views "on cosmology and anthropology" will "probably not coincide with yours", referring him to "a general idea in the preface to my work 'The Universe'", (Bologna, 3 vols, 1871-1873), "yours will perhaps be inspired, I fear, by the ultra-materialist trends so common among your medical colleagues, who believe that nothing exists other than what they can cut with their scalpel. And since you never have anything under your eyes except the part that is dead, diseased or monstrous in nature, on the whole you become insensitive to the marvellous harmony and solidarity of all the parts of the infinite Universe". However, for Andreini's next lectures on Anthropology, he can say "that I believe that the Sun and all his planets, including our own, were formed by the flowing together of elements dispersed from previously existing worlds . There exists, in my view, an infinite variety of plants and animals in infinite space, but there are intrinsic reasons why certain given organic forms are repeated more than others . Darwin's law has not been verified on our earth", explaining that "in another world, now destroyed, and the parent or ancestor of this", man may have "descended from monkey, but present man does not derive from present monkey", otherwise "there would have remained . numerous traces of it", he ends by saying "It consoles me to see the French Republic consolidating, even though at the moment she is in bad hands. I regret too not having the time to sum up for you my particular views on cosmology and anthropology. Probably they will not coincide with yours, for mine are consonant with those of which I have given a general idea in the preface to my work "The Universe"; yours will perhaps be inspired, I fear, by the ultra-materialist trends so common among your medical colleagues, who believe that nothing exists other than what they can cut with their scalpel. And since you never have anything under your eyes except the part that is dead, diseased or monstrous in nature, on the whole you become insensitive to the marvellous harmony and solidarity of all the parts of the infinite Universe. All the same, if in your next lectures (on Anthropology) you wish to do me the honour of briefly quoting the opinions I have expressed in my addresses [Andreini adds '(in the open air)'] at Milan, Turin, Florence and Venice, and which will be developed more fully in the latest parts of The Universe, you can say that I believe that the Sun and all his planets, including our own, were formed by the flowing together of elements dispersed from previously existing worlds, among the innumerable worlds which compose the eternal and immense Universe. There exists, in my view, an infinite variety of plants and animals in infinite space, but there are intrinsic reasons why certain given organic forms are repeated more than others in the innumerable worlds, and among these last, the fundamental forms of our plants and our animals, including man.         Tramp Abroad (Salesman's Dummy)

1879. TWAIN, Mark. A Tramp Abroad [Salesman’s Dummy]. Hartford, Connecticut: American Publishing Company, 1879. Slim octavo, original gilt- and blind-stamped brown cloth. $4200.Original salesman’s dummy for A Tramp Abroad, with engraved frontispiece portrait, select illustrations and excerpts, and samples of the gilt-decorated cloth spine and morocco swatch affixed to front pastedown, and a sample of publisher’s calf affixed to rear pastedown. In A Tramp Abroad, “besides his accounts of Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, Twain includes local folklore (some of which he made up) and slips in several sketches that have little or nothing to do with Europe, including one of his most famous comic tales, ‘Jim Baker’s Bluejay Yarn” (MacDonnell, 42). Twain called the work “a gossipy volume… written by one loafer for a brother loafer to read” (LeMaster & Wilson, 743). Salesman’s dummies (also called salesman’s samples or prospectuses) were meant to be taken door-to-door to show potential subscribers. The front cover of the dummy is identical to the published book, while the text consists of several sections of the book (primarily those pages with some of the book’s many illustrations). The book was offered in full cloth with a sprinkled edge or gilt edge, in a library-style leather binding, or in half morocco or half calf. At the rear of the volume is a page of reviews, a full-page advertisement, ten leaves of ruled paper intended to be filled with orders (with the headings: “Subscribers’ Names,” “Residences,” and “Style of Binding”), and the publisher’s two-page current “Catalogue of Books.” The frontispiece portrait is the preferred first state (with the underlying lines in the left hand lapel vertical rather than slanted), and the wood-engraving of Moses is also the first state (bearing the caption “Moses,” rather than “Titian’s Moses”). See BAL 3386. Johnson, 35. McBride, 60. Text fine, with only a few marks of handling, light rubbing to extremities of original cloth. A near-fine copy.

Examen critique d'un écrit posthume de Claude Bernard sur la fermentation.

Original printed wrappers bound in. Fine cherry-colour full morocco binding by Canape.R.D dated 1926, spine with 5 raised bands gilt-lettered in first compartment, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, morocco turn-ins with gilt-ruled borders. Provenance: Victor Hugo. Carte de visite by Louis Pasteur and small portrait photograph sticked to second blank leaf. ----Norman 1660; Cushing P142; Heirs of Hippocrates 1900; Osler 1552. - FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY PASTEUR on the half-title: "A monsieur Victor Hugo, de l'Academie francaise, Hommage de profond respect, L. Pasteur." A rare instance, linking two of the greatest French men of the 19th century: one of the founders of modern medicine, Louis Pasteur, and the literary giant Victor Hugo, author of Les misérables or Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Louis Pasteur arguably was a great admirer of Victor Hugo. In a manuscript dated February 7, 1885, just a few months before the death of the great poet, he writes: "L'enfant sublime, comme l'a nomme Chateaubriand, a merite d'etre appele le sublime vieillard. Devant cette glorieuse longevite, la France donne un beau spectacle. Son acclamation est un cri de patriotisme." Whereas Victor Hugo was elected a member of the Academie francaise on January 7, 1841 at the age of just 39, Pasteur became a member of this academy rather late, on December 8, 1881, a few days before his 60th birthday. The academy was an exclusive society made up of 40 of France's most important people. We know of at least one other copy of this book containing a dedication by Pasteur to a member of the Academie, Émile Littré, with an almost identical wording: "A monsieur Littre, de l'Academie francaise, Hommage de profond respect, L. Pasteur." Could it be possible that Pasteur presented copies of his book to members of the Academie to gain support for his election campaign? Regarding the book itself, Pierre Bertholet, an opponent of Pasteur's controversial theory of fermentation, published a posthumous and unauthorized version of some notes by Claude Bernard, a supporter of Pasteur's, which claimed to have isolated a soluble chemical produced by yeast that caused fermentation, in contrast to Pasteur's theory. Pasteur's bitter reply strengthened his conviction that fermentation was life without air, a belief he held until Eduard Buchner isolated a soluble alcoholic ferment in 1897. Near Fine.
