Hedda Gabler has been selected here as possibly his most frequently performed play in the modern theater... Ibsen's influence on the whole course of modern drama may be indicated by the inclusion of his plays in the repertoire of every avant-garde theater of his day... Ibsen's revolutionary technique has now become firmly established... As to the social message of his plays, it should be remembered that his purpose was analytic not didactic. He was concerned with the exploration of social problems rather than with moral preaching" (Printing and the Mind of Man).Printing and the Mind of Man 375 (Hedda Gabler, etc).

Autograph Letter Signed to her Publisher

1879. hardcover. ["Eliot, George."] Autograph Letter Signed ("M. E. Lewes"-- Marian Evans Lewes) to Mr. [Joseph] Langford [of her publisher Blackwood]. Two pages, written in purple ink on mourning stationery printed with "The Priory | 21 North Bank | Regent&#39;s Park." Dated December 17, 1879. <p>This two-page letter, to the London manager of the publishing house of William Blackwood of Edinburgh, reads:</p> <p><?ms_indent>Dear Mr. Langford</?ms_indent></p> <p><?ms_indent>I think there is no harm in allowing the said drawings to appear, since you think that they show talent. But <u>I</u> must have no responsibility in the matter. They must be understood to be quite apart from my book in a material sense. And therefore I must not see them. The word "illustrations" must be avoided. "Heads from T. S." -- or some such title would be allowable, but not "Heads <u>illustrating</u>" -- which might be the reverse of true. Will you kindly answer Mr. Ledebour in this sense?</?ms_indent></p> <p><?ms_indent>I shall be very happy to see you any day after 4:30. From thence to 7 o&#39;clock I am at present invariably at home.</?ms_indent></p> <p><?ms_indent>Believe me</?ms_indent></p> <p><?ms_indent>Yours very sincerely</?ms_indent></p> <p><?ms_indent>MELewes</?ms_indent></p> <p>George Eliot&#39;s last book, IMPRESSIONS OF THEOPHRASTUS SUCH, had come out earlier in 1879; a work of fiction, it is a series of eighteen character studies or "impressions" on the arts, literature, and society in general. Though the "impressions" are the author&#39;s she presents them as if by a scholar who remains unnamed ("Theophrastus" was a disciple of Aristotle) -- whose own eccentric character is revealed by his observations.</p> <p>The book was not illustrated. Clearly, an illustrator named Ledebour (perhaps a son or daughter of the famous German botanical illustrator C. F. von Ledebour) had just contacted Blackwood&#39;s, asking permission to develop a suite of illustrations referring to the characters in the book (such a thing had been done earlier, for example with characters in Dickens&#39;s novels, in fact using the phrase "Heads from..."). Langford, at Blackwood&#39;s, put the question to the author, and this is her reply. Clearly this is a devastatingly lukewarm endorsement of the idea; in any event, no such group of "heads" was ever published.</p> <p>This letter shows "George Eliot" very much in charge of the publication of her book, just a year after the death of her long-time common-law husband George Henry Lewes (the reason they did not marry was that he was married to someone else; his death is the reason for the mourning stationery). In May 1880 she would marry John Cross (twenty years younger than she), her first legal marriage, but in December of that year -- twelve months after writing this letter -- she died. (She was not buried in Poet&#39;s Corner of Westminster Abbey due to her "irregular" relationship with Lewes; however, in 1980, on the centenary of her death, a memorial stone was at last placed there.)</p> <p>The letter is in fine condition (once folded). It is published in THE GEORGE ELIOT LETTERS, edited by Gordon Haight, vii p. 229.</p> SIGNED / INSCRIBED / ASSOCIATION COPIES (Sumner & Stillman Code:12128)

History of the Donner Party. A Tragedy of the Sierras

Crowley & McGlashan Truckee, California: Crowley & McGlashan, (1879). First edition. Spine a little rubbed, corners slightly bent, else a very attractive copy. Octavo.original brown cloth decoratively stamped in blind with gilt lettered spine McGlashan was born in Wisconsin and was only two years old when his family came to California, making him a contemporary in age and experience with the younger children in the Donner party. He settled in Truckee, California, in 1871 where he became an attorney, a publisher, writer and an inventor. His book was by far the most informed account of its time of the Donner Party. It was the first serious attempt to consult authorative sources, weigh evidence, collect detached episodes into an organized whole, and extend the story of the Donner Party from a sensational incident to an important chapter in California history [Howes M102. Zamorano Eighty #53. Graff 2610. Cowan p. 406].

Samtida fina ljusbruna halvfranska band med fem upphöjda bind, rik förgylld dekorativ ryggdekor, röda titeletiketter samt röda snitt. Något skavda ryggar. [25x17 cm].

        Doublets: a word-puzzle

Macmillan and Co.Original red publisher's cloth paneled in blind, gilt title on upper cover, slight soiling. An excellent presentation copy inscribed in purple ink, "Mrs. Neate from the Author." Preserved in a modern burgundy cloth box with red morocco sides, gilt lettered. First edition, first issue of this most popular word puzzle, invented by Carroll, that became a parlor craze in its time. "The rules of the puzzle are simple enough. Two words are proposed, of the same length; and the Puzzle consists in linking these together by interposing other words, each of which shall differ from the next word in one letter only." Beginning as a series of single problems which appeared in Vanity Fair on March 29, 1879, these games were collected by Macmillan and published here for the first time in book form. There are thirteen puzzles dated between March 29 and June 21, 1879. The name "doublets" was adopted after a passage in Shakespeare's Macbeth. Dodgson (1832-98), lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College from 1855 to 1881, purportedly invented the game for Julia and Ethel Margaret Arnold, two little girls who "found nothing to do." Sophia Neate (1832-1908) of Heatherside, Woking, took on the care of Sally Sinclair and her siblings, whom Dodgson liked very much, when their parents died. Neate was supported financially by Dodgson and the actor Lionel Brough. On first meeting Mrs. Neate on June 26, 1879, Dodgson wrote in his diary that he &#145;found her so interesting that I stayed 4 hours!" He occasionally visited her and noted the progress of the Sinclair children as they grew (see Cohen, The letters of Lewis Carroll, 1979, p. 334n).
