Bain, spine elaborately gilt in compartments with yellow morocco onlays, boards elaborately gilt-panelled with green morocco onlays, marbled endpapers, turn-ins and all edges gilt. Binding rubbed and scuffed, some spotting to contents, particularly the edges of the plates but not usually affecting the image. A very good copy. 24 plates by John Martin. A handsomely bound volume of Martin's Paradise Lost. John Martin's dramatic panoramas of Old Testament scenes achieved a "hold on the popular imagination unparalleled in his day" (ODNB). Disdained by the artistic establishment, he reached out to the public by staging paid viewings and selling prints of his monumental canvases, and he became the most popular artist-showman of the day. "Mezzotint is a medium peculiarly suited to Manichaean fantasies: the black void of the prepared plate, blackness scraped away to create forms and highlights. Paradise Lost, illustrated in two sets of mezzotints for the publisher Septimus Prowett in 1825–7, was ideal material for Martin, who echoed Milton's solemnity while opening out his cadences in the imagery of groves and chases bathed in silvery light and an underworld where fires tongue the darkness and bridges span nothingness and Satan's armies infest the gloom. Light occasional foxing. Very good. A specially- produced edition of this work, illustrated with albumen photographs where the engravings are usually located, and in a special leather binding. These albumen photographs served as the models for the engravings in the regular edition, and several of the albumens are signed by the photographer J.C. Burritt in the negative. Benedetto Croce war ein italienischer Philosoph, Humanist, Historiker, Politiker, Kunsthistoriker und Kritiker. Mit Thomas Mann stand er in brieflichem Kontakt. Nach einem Studium an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie ging Großmann 1905-1914 nach Paris, wo er Schüler von L. Simon (1861-1945) war und freundschaftliche Kontakte zu L. Feininger (1881-1955) und H. Matisse (1869-1954) unterhielt. Anschließend verbrachte er einige Jahre in Berlin; zahlreiche Reisen erneut nach Paris, nach Schweden, in die Schweiz und nach Italien schlossen sich an. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Berlin lehrte er an der Kunstakademie, wurde jedoch 1934 aus politischen Gründen entlassen. Großmann gilt neben Emil Orlik (1870-1932) als der bedeutendste deutsche Graphiker der 20er Jahre.

      Robert Hardwicke, London 1866 - VIII, (2), 436 pp. Original plum cloth with blindstamped decoration on boards and gilt title on spine. Original black endpapers. Uncut. Discoloration at spine and edges. 2 contemporary names handwritten on ffep. Some foxing (first 8 and last 5 leaves only). The rare London 1st. edition, not often seen in original state, here without publishers advertisements [early issue?]. Preceedes the less rare 1st US edition with a few months. Sims (a US citizen) lived in Paris in the '60, having left the US because of the Civil War. For professional matters he preferred London however, where he could discuss with collegues in his mother-tongue. The preface is signed with a Mayfair address. He was a foreign member of the Obstetrical Society, and gave a number of presentations there. This is the only book he ever published. In 1864/65 some notes (however some 20 pp. in total only) were published in installments in THE LANCET, this is the first publication of all notes in one volume, thus largely in 1st edition. Seale Harris (WOMAN'S SURGEON 1950) writes:". it immediately aroused a storm of controversy. Almost all of the critics recognized its forceful style, its hold upon the reader's intererst, its abundance of bold and original thought, and its potentialities as a revolutionary influence in bringing effective treatment of sterility and allied ills within general reach. Arrayed against these favorable comments, however, were the animadversions of many who criticised the book for its casual and fragmentary nature, its complete absence of system, and, above all, its frank presentation of subjects theretofore considered taboo." and as an example of the last: ".his account of the way he had found it necessary in some instances to visit sterile married couples in their bedrooms and to apply there various measures (including, occasionally etherisation of the wife) to overcome the obstacles preventing conception." Indeed, even 150 years later the texts have a freshness not often encountered. It marked the turning point at which gynaecology ceased to be an ineffective medical appendage of obstetrics and became a surgical speciality. This book is remarkable for its accurate description of the fertile period in relation to the menstrual cycle - fifty years before it was rediscovered and really understood. Sims here also records a successful case of artificial insemination, although the patient subsequently miscarried in the fourth month. (.)". =Hagelin p.157. It further includes the first description of the duckbill vagina speculum ("Sims speculum") and a description of the knee-chest position, which Sims repopularized. Lithographic view of Chicago by Louis Kurz from the series Chicago Illustrated with descriptive material by James W. Sheahan. Published in installments by Jevne & Almini (1866). Each of the thirteen installments, issued in paper wraps, contained four tinted lithographs printed by the Chicago Lithographing Company. These lithographs represent scarce pre-fire views of the city, this portraying an elegant line of buildings suggestive of a prosperous and cultured city. Signs on the buildings provide an opportunity to provide advertising for a range of businesses such as "Turtle & Co. Detective Police Agency" and "Grommes & Ullrich Wines Liquour." .

      . . Zustand: Buch etwas gewölbt, Gelenke geringst angeplatzt, eine Karte mit Einriss (ca. 3cm), sonst sehr schön. Das Buch war nie im Handel, wurde wahrscheinlich nur in einer sehr kleinen Auflage gedruckt. Der Autor war Teilhaber der Maschinenbau-Frabrik Nolten & Mehler (wohl) in Aachen. Das Vorwort lautet: "Einer Anregung meiner Mutter folgend, habe ich die Briefe Vaters aus den ruhmreichen Feldzügen 1866 und 1870/71 sowie zwei Jugendbriefe aus dem Jahre 1857 drucken lassen, damit jedes der Kinder die Briefe in Händen hat [.....]. Aachen, Weihnachten 1910, Max Mehler". Die Quelle ist von sowohl für die Geschichte der Kampfhandlungen und der im Text erwähnten Einheiten, als auch für die Industriegeschichte Aachens von höchster Bedeutung. 27 abgedruckte Briefe schrieb Mehler vom Feldzug 1866 (46 Seiten), 40 Briefe vom Feldzug 1870/71 (100 Seiten). Am Ende sind 2 Jugendbriefe abgedruckt (4 Seiten). Die Briefe erzählen sowohl von den Feldzügen, bringen aber auch Interna der Fabrik Nolten & Mehler. Carl Mehler stammte aus Aachen und machte 1857 sein Examen. Im selben Jahr reiste er zu Verwandten nach Fulda, um die "Bergwissenschaft" zu studieren. In einem Brief 1857 spricht er aber auch davon, Maschinenbau zu studieren und hernach in einer Fabrik in Aachen zu arbeiten. Vom 1.10.1863 bis zum 1.10.1864 diente er beim 2. Rheinischen Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 28 in Aachen. Am 29.10.1864 wurde er zum überzähligen Unteroffizier ernannt. 1866 wurde er bei der Mobilmachung zum 1. Rhein. IR Nr. 25 nach Sonderburg (Schleswig) eingezogen. Die 27 Briefe wurden verfasst in Sonderburg, Harburg, Bollstedt bei Mühlhausen/Thüringen, Mackenzell bei Fulda, Schönau a.d. fränkischen Saale, Kleinostheim bei Aschaffenburg, Wörth am Main, Uettingen bei Würzburg, Zellingen, Lohr, Roßbach, Fulda, Frankfurt, Walluf, Caub bei Bingen, Oberwallmenach und Dahlheim. Die schöne farbige Karte "Übersichtsskizze für die Märsche und Gefechte des I. Rhein. Inf. Regts. No. 25 im Feldzuge 1866" (aufgelappt 52x40cm) zeigt anschaulich den Verlauf des Marsches. Der erste Brief vom Krieg gegen Frankreich datiert auf den 22.7.1870. Mehler dient im 8. Rhein. IR Nr. 70 als Vizefeldwebel der Reserve. Er scheint in der Forma Nolten & Mehler eine leitende Position inne zu haben (wohl als Gründer einen Direktorenposten). Die Firma war wohl im produzierenden Maschinenbaugewerbe tätig (Lokomotiven? Werkzeugmaschinen?). 1870 wird er zum Leutnant der Landwehr ernannt. Bis September 1870 ist sein Regiment als Festungsbesatzung in Saarlouis stationiert, danach geht es nach Frankreich. An der Belagerung von Metz nimmt Mehlers Einheit teil, dann am langen Vormarsch durch Frankreich (über Reims und Amiens bis Rouen, dann St. Quentin - hierzu die aufklappbare Karte, Größe 34x52cm). Der letzte Brief datiert vom 28.2.1871. Die Briefe aus dem Krieg sind überwiegend an seinen Freund und Angestellten (wohl Prokuristen) Johann gerichtet (ca. 1/5 der Texte beziehen sich dabei auf Interna der Firma).

Albumen photograph from a negative taken in 1866, 10 x 14 inches, on original two-tone gilt-edged thin card mount, 15 7/8 x 19 1/8 inches, with plate title and photographer's credit. 2 1/2 x 1/2-inch marginal paper loss to the lower left corner of the support sheet; a few small spots and discolorations; overall nice tones. Good. A stunning image from Barnard's PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS OF SHERMAN'S CAMPAIGN, an album which is one of the two greatest photographic monuments to the Civil War and 'a landmark in the history of photography' (Keith F. Davis). A contemporary reviewer wrote of this image and its companions: "These photographs...surpass any other photographic views which have been produced in this country - whether relating to the war or otherwise" (HARPER'S WEEKLY, Dec. 8, 1866, p.771). This image comes from George N. Barnard's album titled PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS OF SHERMAN'S CAMPAIGN, EMBRACING SCENES OF THE OCCUPATION OF NASHVILLE, THE GREAT BATTLES AROUND CHATTANOOGA AND LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, THE CAMPAIGN OF ATLANTA, MARCH TO THE SEA, AND THE GREAT RAID THROUGH THE CAROLINAS (1866). This album, together with Alexander Gardner's PHOTOGRAPHIC SKETCHBOOK OF THE CIVIL WAR (1866) are the two greatest photographic monuments of the Civil War. Between them, they contain some of the most famous images of the War. The present image offers a poignant reminder of the trail of destruction left across the Confederacy by Gen. William T. Sherman's army in 1864 to 1865 during his famous campaign from Nashville to Chattanooga then Atlanta and so to Savannah and the sea, then by- passing Charleston, north to Columbia. In the meantime a smaller force had occupied Charleston and Fort Sumter. To the North, the military campaign was brilliant, bold and decisive - an event worthy of the present monumental album. Hardcover, bound in handsome contemporary three-quarter black calf and marbled boards, spine with gilt roll tooled raised bands between six compartments, each of five compartments with gilt fleuron within double-ruled gilt frame and four floral corners, sixth compartment lettered and dated in gilt; gilt ruled sides, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. With the original printed wrappers bound-in. In a very fine condition. Excellent large-paper copy, fresh interior, attractive binding. ~ First edition. Marquis Rene de Belleval (1837-1900). Printed on laid, watermarked wide-margined paper by J. Quentin. All lithographs by H. Legrand. Provenance: from the bequest of renown arms- and armour collector and author, Max Dreger, with his exquisite gilded lithograph bookplate, by K. Ochs, and with some neat annotations in pencil. Max Dreger (1852-1929) was director of the firm Friedrich Krupp in Essen. An expert in the technique of arms and a well known collector of swords and daggers, he assembled an important library of military treatises on fortification and artillery, as well as a small collection of books on Japanese weapons and armour. In 1950 his collection of books was acquired by The Royal Armoury, the oldest museum in Sweden which was established by King Gustav II Adolph in 1628..

        The Story of the Telegraph in India

      London: E. & F.N. Spon,, 1866. Octavo. Original maroon sand-grained cloth, title gilt to spine and to the upper board, triple fillet panel in blind to the boards, brown surface-paper endpapers. Folding map. Spine a little sunned, overall slightly rubbed, ?inscription clipped from the head of the title page, first gathering a little spring, light toning, occasional foxing, a very good copy. First edition. Uncommon, just four locations on Copac - BL, Oxford, Cambridge, and NLS - OCLC adds MIT only. Adley dedicates the book to Robert Wygram Crawford, chairman of the Commons committee on East India Telegraphic and Postal communications, and also of The East India Railway Company, as another who has "ceaselessly advocated … measures indispensable to remedy the unhappily benighted condition of Telegraphic science and accommodation in India" (Preface). Adley had spent several years in the employ of the EIRC, as an assistant engineer on the Burdwan division in West Bengal, and for a year as resident engineer on the construction of the Raniganj division, he was later appointed Superintendent of the Telegraph Department of the line. In 1858 he had founded the Engineers' Journal and Railway and Public Works Chronicle of India and the Colonies, published in Calcutta, which he also edited. After a brief retirement in England, he returned to India in 1868 joining the Public Works Department of the Government of India. His first duty was the design of the Small Arms Factory at Dum-Dum, Bengal, for which he was highly commended by the Government. He was subsequently engaged in designing drainage and irrigation systems for the improvement of the famine and fever-stricken districts near the Hooghly. In 1873 he finally retired to England, his health undermined by years working in the marshes of Bengal. He died in 1896, aged 68.

        An album of early New Zealand photographs, watercolors, manuscript verse, and ephemera assembled by Miss Flaxman

      New Zealand, 1866-1870 - This delightful photograph and autograph album chronicles the world of young Miss Flaxman in New Zealand in the 1860s. Albums and scrapbooks assembled by women in the Victorian era have come under increasing scholarly scrutiny for the insights they provide into women’s public and private lives and thoughts. This 1860s New Zealand album, with dozens of photographs, original watercolors, manuscript poems, and printed ephemera, is a rare survival and a valuable resource for women’s studies. The album is highlighted by its splendid early New Zealand photographs. Three carte-de-visite photographs depict identified Maori: one is a portrait of two identified Maori women, the other two are of Paora Parau, a Maori chief from Poverty Bay who served in the native contingent of the military. The portrait of two Maori women has the backstamp of J. D. Wrigglesworth, Wellington. The album also contains twelve photographs of towns, landscapes, and buildings, including views of the town of Nelson, Maitai Valley, Te Ore Ore in Wairapa, and a house in St. Kilda. Several photographs are by Burton Brothers, the leading New Zealand photographer of the day. This charming album also contains six delicate watercolor landscapes and views of houses, presumably by Miss Flaxman, dozens of pieces of Victorian chromolithography, and numerous manuscript poems including a “Maori acrostic,” lines by Miss Flaxman’s friends, and poems by Poe, Browning, Tennyson, and others. Study of this album of photographs, manuscripts, drawings, and ephemera will yield valuable information of women’s lives in the 1860s. The album is especially noteworthy for its photographs. New Zealand photographs of this vintage, particularly portraits of identified Maori, are rare in the market. Summary of contents. This finely bound album contains the following objects. A fine copy of this rare work on the District of Gaspe on the eastern seaboard of Canada, bordered to the north by the St.Lawrence The introductory text is particularly interesting and the author writes with an unusual lack of formality and does not hold back from expressing his views. These are definitely partisan and aimed mainly at extolling the possible economic virtues of the area, mainly it seems to persuade the "Intercolonial Railroad" to complete the extension of the line through the district. Portrait of Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) the American Congregationalist clergyman, supporter of the abolition of slavery and women's suffrage, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe the author of the abolitionist novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin". According to the note on the verso this copy used to hang in the study of Nicholas Perczel (Sir Miklós Perczel de Bonyhád; 1812-1904) the Hungarian freedom fighter who also participated in the Civil War as a colonel of the Union Army and had siginificant role in the liberation of Missouri. The note states that Perczel and his wife were Henry Ward Beecher's and Harriet's guests for six months in New York after their arrival to the US as refugees following the fall of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and their were corresponding until Beecher's death. The Reverend helped Perczel to set up a small academy, teaching German and French to a group from the upper rust of New York's society. Rare portrait. We could trace only one copy in institutional holdings in the collection of "Miscellaneous Items in High Demand" of the Library of Congress. Trimmed. Notes in ink on verso. Expertly repaired tear to mount, lower left corner and mild discolouration in the mid-section of the image, otherwise good tones. A stunning image from George N. Barnard's album titled PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS OF SHERMAN'S CAMPAIGN, EMBRACING SCENES OF THE OCCUPATION OF NASHVILLE, THE GREAT BATTLES AROUND CHATTANOOGA AND LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, THE CAMPAIGN OF ATLANTA, MARCH TO THE SEA, AND THE GREAT RAID THROUGH THE CAROLINAS (1866). This album, together with Alexander Gardner's PHOTOGRAPHIC SKETCHBOOK OF THE CIVIL WAR (1866), are the two greatest photographic monuments of the Civil War. Between them they contain some of the most famous images of the War. Keith F. Davis calls Barnard's album "a landmark in the history of photography." A contemporary reviewer wrote of this image and its companions: "These photographs...surpass any other photographic views which have been produced in this country - whether relating to the war or otherwise" (HARPER'S WEEKLY, Dec. 8, 1866, p.771). The publishing history of this title is now well known. Because Carroll was unhappy with the original printing of "Alice" he recalled all copies to destroy them. It was re-set by Clay and released in Novmber of 1865 with the 1866 date on the title page. Only a very few copies of this first recalled issue are known to exist. The remainder of the unacceptable first issue sheets were sent to New York and bound by Appleton with a new title page. TIPPED-IN TO THIS COPY IS A QUIRKY 2-SIDED LETTER BY CARROLL USING HIS CHARACTERISTIC PURPLE INK! In the present collection (originally published in 1780), he gathers some of his own poems, short stories, and literary essays, including "La Main Chaude," "Délire bachique," and "Bouquet à Jean" along with pieces by other contemporary hands. This is => one of only 30 copies printed on papier de Chine, this example with an extra suite of plates bound in offering a second state of the frontispiece and the 11 headpiece engravings by Duplessis-Bertaux. Binding: Contemporary signed blue morocco, covers framed in gilt triple fillets with gilt-stamped arabesque central medallion surrounded by a frame of gilt double fillets with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, spine gilt extra, with gilt dentelles and marbled paper pastedowns; lower edge of front dentelle stamped "Allô" (Paul Charles Allô, 1823?-90). All edges gilt. Original slim, tricolor silk bookmarker laid in. Binding as above, spine gently sunned, joints and extremities rubbed, area of light discoloration to each cover at joint, back cover with small scuffs; front hinge (inside) tender. Front pastedown with unidentified bookplate reading "Exploranda est veritas" (name effaced); back free endpaper with institutional rubber-stamp and note of proper deaccession. Bookmarker separated and laid in, as above, with offsetting on either side; scattered light foxing. Volume now housed in maroon cloth?-covered clamshell case partially lined with marbled paper. => Interesting 19th-century French belles-lettres, beautifully produced, here in a beautifully bound example with the bonus suite of plates.

      Small 4to. Size: 18 x 23,5 cm. Lvs. 156 + 118 + 166 including title pages to the last two parts. The handwritten text in Urdu in Nastaliq script comprises a "First draft" in pencil, followed by a "Second draft with corrections" in ink and finally a "Printer's copy ... with the latest corrections" in ink, written on blue fine paper. The text is heavily reworked with extensive ink and pencil alterations and crossing outs. In some places new text has been pasted in. Occasionally with some minor marks and tears. Bound in contemporay quarter calf on marbled paper covered boards, recased and rebacked. Bookplate of Hugh Henry Robertson Aikman (William's son). William Aikman (1822 - 1903) was a religious writer and poet who joined the Indian Army in 1840. Among his works are some essays published under the pseudonym "A soldier of the Cross". This treatise on spiritual salvation was published in Urdu in Madras 1866 library listed as "Sulasut Tul Kutuub by Willem Robert" and an English edition was printed by Caleb Foster in Madras 1868.

      London, Macmillan and Co., 1866. , 1866. 8vo. Pps. 192. Bound in red cloth, gilt, with powder blue endpapers, all edge gilt, housed in leather collectors box. Neat owner name to margin of title-page with ink faded to a soft yellow (now barely visible. Contents and binding are particularly fresh; a curious copy, originally purchased at auction where it achieved a considerable sum as a fine copy. Upon close inspection however we now believe this copy has been expertly bound in the first part of the twentieth century, using the same red cloth and binder's brasses which are virtually identical to the original design; in addition the correct powder-blue endpapers are employed. The leather box is likely from the 20's or 30's, and was conceivably made when this binding was first executed. A striking copy of a landmark title. FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION of 'Alice in Wonderland.' Lewis Carroll disliked the edition published in 1865 so much that he had them all recalled and shipped out to the U.S.A. where the title pages were removed and new American ones inserted. Carroll's annoyance was with the typography and general look of the book. The illustrator, Tenniel, also complained that his illustrations were not being done justice. It is estimated that no more than 20 of these 1865 issues escaped. They are mostly now held in institutional collections. The new sheets were issued in the UK the following year. It is uncertain whether the edition comprised two thousand of four thousand copies. Williams, Nadan, Green [46]

Inscribed to "Earl DeGreyt Ripon,/ with the Author's best respects.". Scarce first edition of the first scientific description of the extinct Dodo. Owen put the fossil bones together in the way he thought the bird would have looked, the way Savery portrayed it. Owen used an outline of the bird taken from the painting and arranged the bones inside it. This and his detailed scientific description of the bird were published in this book on the Dodo and cemented its image for generations to come."The discovery of the first fossil Dodo remains in the Mare aux Songes marsh, Mauritius, in 1865 resulted in a race to publish on the Dodo's post-cranial anatomy. George Clark, probable discoverer of the fossil site, sent consignments of bones initially to Richard Owen (British Museum), and subsequently to Alfred Newton, Cambridge, via Alfred's brother Edward, who was stationed on Mauritius. After receiving the first consignment, Owen intercepted material intended for Alfred, and abused his position to forestall any complaints from Alfred. Owen published on the Dodo first, while Clark was financially rewarded, but Clark's ensuing arguments over the site discovery with railway engineer, Harry Higginson, and attempt to cover up the abundance of Dodo bones, thus keeping prices high, concluded in a bitter rivalry that was never resolved between Owen and the Newton brothers." First edition of the first book published in America dealing with the care and institutional management of those with learning disabilities. Under the influence of the teachings of Itard and Esquirol, both of whom he studied under, which stressed the humane treatment of the insane, Seguin developed methods for managing intellectual disabilities that emphasized education and physical training. "Seguin's system of training was based on the methodology of physiological education. It was his theory that idiocy (or feeblemindedness, as we term it today) is only a prolonged infancy, and that it could be overcome through the application of proper training methods. For a long time he cherished the belief that mental defect was curable. While later results showed this notion to be untenable, the same results did confirm the great value of his educational methods in improving the condition" (Deutsch Mentally Ill in America, p. 338). Seguin's programme at his Physiological School in New York City, where he stressed the importance of developing self-reliance and independence, was a major influence on the educational theories of Maria Montessori.
