Administrator's Sale. Personal Property! Belonging to the Estate of B. Smith deceased, on the premises near Uniontown, Saturday, December 16, [18]'65.

[N. P., ?Placerville, CA]: F. A. Hornblower, 1865 - Broadside (454 x 370 mm). Mounted and framed. Stain to lower left hand margin of broadside, else in fine condition. A scarce advertising broadside, announcing the estate sale of one B. Smith, probably Benjamin Smith, the owner of a store in the mining town of Marshall, later named Uniontown and today called Lotus, in Eldorado County, California. The sale was organised by the administrator of the estate, F. A. Hornblower, originally from New Jersey, who moved to California in 1849. He was initially involved in the search for gold, but in 1855, he formed a partnership with Charles E. Meredith for the practice of the law at nearby Placerville, becoming in turn Public Administrator, City Attorney, District Attorney, and Associate Justice of El Dorado county, before retiring to Sacramento. The present broadside, presumably produced in Placerville itself or very locally, displays a remarkable variety of fonts with very unusual letter forms. Included in the estate sale are over fifty different products, mostly foodstuffs and agricultural equipment, advertised across some eleven lines of text. In first place for sale is 650 gallons of new wine, as well as 450 gallons of old wine, 80 gallons of vinegar, 3000 apple trees, cider and a cider press. California's Gold Rush began in El Dorado County 1848 with James Marshall's discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, on the South Fork of the American River in Coloma. As legions of people flocked to California to claim their fortunes, the region's winemaking industry was born. By 1870, El Dorado County was among the largest wine producers in the state, trailing only Los Angeles and Sonoma counties. The local wine industry flourished until just after the turn of the century when there were approximately 2,000 acres of vines in the county. A rare example of California advertising.         TABLE SHOWING CAMPS BWN [sic] FORT LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS AND DENVER CITY, WITH DISTANCES BETWEEN CAMPS AND REMARKS [manuscript title]

[Denver, 1865. [2]pp. Two oblong folio sheets, lined. Each sheet folded once vertically, with the right half of each sheet backed on a larger sheet. Light marginal foxing. Very good. A stimulating record of thirty-two convenient military camping points between Fort Leavenworth and Denver around the mid-19th century. Fort Leavenworth served as a large recruitment and training camp for the Union Army during the Civil War. Shortly thereafter, troops at Leavenworth engaged in multiple skirmishes with neighboring Native American tribes during the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Denver was also a hotbed of conflict during the Colorado War and the later Indian skirmishes on the Great Plains. Such as table as this, showing distances between military safe havens in the West, with remarks detailing topographical features between each camp, would have been especially useful during these battles with Native Americans. One example from the table states the distance from Indian Creek to Cross Creek as 16 miles, with the following remarks: "Level bottom prairie - good road - wood & water - tall ridge at Cross Creek - Deep Creek six miles west - good camping ground." The area between Fort Wallace and Big Timbers is described as "High rolling prairie - cross Goose Creek - good water. Country broken & hilly. Big Timbers - stumps of once a fine grove of trees - Former Indian burying place." A possibly-unique and important record of American military camps in the West during the Indian Wars.

Hi, Here we have an 1865 Lillywhite Guide. 21st Edition. I know the editions get messy around here but this is the first of the last three editions, Smith 22, with 2 (1865s or 1865/66) following it depending on the date used. The binding is poor. The Covers are missing. The 4 adverts (2 pages) at the front are bound in at the rear (at the end of the book) and ther rear adverts are present apart from the last 4 pages (8 adverts) , this is comparing it to Smiths Guide, some spotting to the odd page. Clear tape to front hinge. It is a tiny book with bright pages and hard to find.

Leipzig, Wilhelm Baensch, 1865. - Quart. Zeitgenössisches, goldgeprägtes Halbleinen. XV (+I), 246 S., mit 60 handkolorierten Kupfertafeln.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1865 - 1865 Original Paperback Wisden, Facs Spine, 2nd Edition!

1865. Hi, This lot is an 1865 Original Paperback Wisden. It has an expertly made facsimile spine and is an original 2nd Edition Wisden. It is in Good Condition. I was proud to own this book for years (hence how I can offer it at such a low price) but I have now purchased an original with original spine-ish so my book is up for sale, the covers here have some marks, , a bit of light staining to the front cover but not inside the book. The rear cover has some wear too. The first page has a stamp from the Sydney Pardon Estate which is a nice bonus. The spine holds the book together very well and so is tightly bound. Inside the book is nice and bright and clean, a very rare book. It is quite a bit shorter than my 1864 but so is my new replacement, must have been cut fine back then.

Ethnological Society of London Volume - (2) Titles - The Present State of Dahome and A Day Amongst the Fans

England 1865 - Title 1: The Present State of Dahome. Title 2: A Day Amongst the Fans. London: John Murray, 1865. Published in the Transactions of the Ethnological Society of London. 8vo. 18 pages, unopened. This volume also contains two reports by Burton, "The Present State of Dahome," 8 pages, dealing primarily with the king's annual human sacrifice ceremony, and "A Day Amongst the Fans," 10 pages, dealing with cannibalism and other customs in Gabon territory. Original olive green cloth boards, tooled borders, gilt title to spine. Age-toning to title page, tears to two leafs at margin, otherwise in Very good condition, as issued, most pages remain unopened. In "The Present State of Dahome" Burton sets forth, so stated, to resolve some misconceptions about the customs and ceremonies then taking place in the country known as Dahome. Here, he is rather gracious and tolerant towards King Gelele and his murderous activities. It is interesting to note, however, that in 1893, his wife and must trusted confident, Isabel Burton remarked, "The King treated Richard very well, but. When Richard returned, he told me that he had seen enough dreadful sights to turn his brain." [Preface to the 1893 edition of A mission to Gelele, edited by Isabel Burton.] The infamous annual tradition of massacring humans for sacrifice, and a second previously unknown custom of multiple executions for King Gelele, are vividly described by the notoriously unfettered and fearless explorer. Other unique customs in Kingdom of Dahomey (in present-day Benin) were the dual monarchy, separate male and female courts, and the role of women as the king's soldieresses, all of which Burton also discusses in detail. In 1863, Richard Burton was sent to Dahomey, as an emissary to the king, in an attempt to convince the tribe to end human sacrifice, in particular the annual ritual of killing military captives, and also to influence the King to his abandon his part in the slave trade and cannibalism. At the time, he was established in his consulate at Fernando Po. His extraordinary firsthand account, a lecture read by him before a keenly attentive crowd of learned scientists and diplomats on 22 November 1864, only nine after his Mission to Gelele, Dahome, precedes the imminent release of his book, "A mission to Gelele, King of Dahome." Excerpt from the text: "In the years 1863-64 I twice visited Dahome, a country whose savage and somewhat peculiar customs have made for it a name in Europe." ". enabled me to learn a medium of the Ffon or national language. my experience will rectify many popular fancies wide afloat." "The extent of Danh-ho-men-to ("the land of Dahome") have been grossly exaggerated. now we must reduce Dahome to one-tenth. The northern frontier bordering on the Makhi mountaineers, is a water called Tevi, eighteen hours of landmarch = forty miles from Agbome, the capital, giving a direct distance of one hundred miles. On the north-east. the Iketu, and other Nagos or Yorubans, who have been plundered, but never subjected. Assuming therefore, forty miles as the medium breadth, we obtain a superficies of 4000 square miles. hedged by hostile races." "The annual customs are called by the people Khwe-ta-nun, or "The Yearly Head Thing". The number of victims has been greatly swollen by report. During my second visit to Agbome, forty men were put to death. I presume that an equal number of women were sent to the next world, but if so, the executions took place within the palace. The men were all criminals and war captive. No innocent Dahoman is ever killed on these occasions. it has not been violent. the Zan Nyanyana, or Evil Nights, there were two: January 1st and January 5th, 1864." "The king personally superintends the executions. Some are clubbed. others are beheaded. After death, the bodies are exposed in the Uhunjro market for a few days. seated in pairs upon Gold Coast stools, supported by a double-storied scaffold about forty feet high. Between these patibula are gallows. with

A Comparative Study of Slavic Legends and Beliefs, Compared to the Mythological Tales of Related Peoples]. Complete in three volumes.

Moscow: K. Soldatenkov 1865 - [Groundbreaking Work on Russian and Slavic Mythology]. Octavos (20.5 × 13.5 cm). Contemporary half black calf, gilt title to spines; 800, [3]; 784, III, [1]; and 840, [2] pp. Boards rubbed and corners lightly scuffed; spine leather with fine cracks, but bindings fully intact; occasional foxing and text a bit musty; two volumes with the bookplate of Russian artist N. N. Vysheslavtsev. An attractive set. A complete set, in contemporary bindings, of Afanas’ev’s foundational study of the symbolism of Russian fairy tales and mythological tropes, based on decades of research and documentation. Afanas’ev (1826–1871) was a Russian historian and philologist who founded the “mythological” branch of Russian folklore studies. One scholar notes that both he “and the Grimms espoused the theories of the mythological school, which linked folklore to myths. The mythological school represented the beginning of the scientific study of folklore in Russia, to which Afanas’ev contributed an influential volume [ ] describing and comparing pagan beliefs with nineteenth-century traditions” (Bonnie C. Marshall, 15). Trained as a lawyer, Afanas’ev gathered an impressive private library of manuscripts and printed sources on early nineteenth-century tales and legends, which he synthesized in his first major work, Narodnye russki skazki (Popular Russian Tales). The present work is more theoretical, and explores the psychological and mytho-poetic origins of various folkloric images in great detail and through recourse to various Slavic literary works, as well as occasional references to German literature. Afanas’ev’s chapters are arranged by categories such as “The sun and the goddess of spring thunderstorms” and “Live waters and the wise word.” Well into the twentieth century, both the Tales and the comparative study were a rich resource for Russian writers from Aleksandr Blok and Marina Tsvetaeva, to Maksim Gorky, to Sergei Esenin and Ivan Bunin. Regarding Esenin’s interest in Afanas’ev, Roman Jakobson noted: “without his three-volume work [ ] there would have been less richness of protean imagery in the poetry of Esenin, who, after long searching in the hungry years of the civil war, procured a copy of Afanas’ev’s study at the price of more than three bushels of wheat – and was jubilant over his luck” (Jakobson, “On Russian Fairy Tales,” in Selected Writings, 87). Scarce in the trade, with no copies shown at auctions in Europe and the United States. In Russian rare book catalogs before the Revolution, the complete set was valued at 25–35 rubles, a rather high price at the time. Berezin 19 (“rare”). Smirnov-Sokol’skii 3826. Orig.-Photo.

Vor 1865. - Albuminabzug. 15,7 x 21,2 cm. Auf Karton mit Tonplatte montiert. Im Unterrand Eindruck: "W. England photg. Views of Switzerland and Savoy. Dedicated by permission to the Alpine Club", sowie Verlegeradresse "F. Siehe auch The Photographic News, Band (Jahrgang) 10, London 1866, S.188 - dort wird diese Aufnahmen-Serie ausführlich besprochen: "we have had during the last few years many fine photographs of Alpine scenery: but the pictures before us far surpass all that we have seen before in almost every quality of excellence. There is an exquisite delicacy of gradation, an infinity of exquisitely marked demi-tones, which we have rarely seen even in very good photographs". Zur Biographie siehe Matthew Butson, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography, Vol I, S. 488/89. Siehe besonders zu den Schweizreisen Englands auch Gérard Bourgarel, William England (1816-1896): dès 1863, son exploration photographique de la Suisse (2005 - Reihe Pro Fribourg).         Funeral March Dedicated to the Memory of Abraham Lincoln . . . Played at the Obsequies of the Late President of the United States By the U. S. Marine Band (Inside title: March Funebre)

New York: Wm A. Pond, 1865. Unbound. Very good. 6 pages including the cover. Light wear and toning; two small ghosts at top margin of cover. On April 15, 1865, after President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, his body was carried by an honor guard to the White House. There he lay in state in the East Room, and the public was allowed to visit on the 17th. A funeral service was held on the 18th, after which the coffin was transported in a official procession, watched by thousands of citizens down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol where a ceremonial burial service was held. This is the official music of President Lincoln's Washington, D.C. funeral procession. It was played by the U.S. Marine band, which was positioned near the front of the official participants in the procession. The piece was composed by U.S. Army Brevet Major General Barnard, who had served as the Chief Engineer of the Defenses of Washington and later as the Chief Engineer of the Armies in the Field. Barnard also served as a member of the funeral Honor Guard. Exceptionally scarce. Not listed in Monaghan. As of 2016, two copies listed by OCLC (the Lincoln Presidential Museum and the Lincoln Financial Foundation Museum) plus one copy at the Library of Congress and one at Brown University; no auction sales on record at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub.
