Conchologia Systematica, or Complete System of Conchology: in which the lepades and conchiferous mollusca are described and classified according to their natural organization and habits.

London: Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1841-42 - 2 volumes, quarto (274 x 206 mm). Contemporary dark green morocco-grain skiver, spines gilt and blind ruled, marbled sides, edges and endpapers. 20th century presentation inscription on front pastedowns, neat ownership stamp of "C. Anthony" at head of titles. Bindings lightly rubbed at extremities, a few small scrapes, occasional offsetting from plates to letterpress, a touch of foxing in places but a very good set. 301 handcoloured engraved plates (including numbers 114 & 114*), some heightened with gum arabic, large folding letterpress table. First edition of one of the most attractive and elusive shell books of the nineteenth century, the beautiful plates handcoloured with considerable delicacy and attention to detail. Lovell Reeve (1814-1865) was one of the leading conchologists of his day and this was his first book: "the publication costs [of which], however, used up all the moneys left to him by his father and compelled him to make a fresh start in life. An opportunity to make some money came from his purchase, at Rotterdam, of a large collection of shells amassed by the Dutch governor-general of the Moluccas, General Ryder. Its profitable sale enabled Reeve to open a shop in King William Street, Strand, where he established himself as a dealer in natural objects and as a publisher specializing in natural history books" (ODNB). His later monumental Conchologia iconica (1843-78) ran to twenty volumes and "remains a valuable record of descriptive conchology in the middle years of the nineteenth century" (ibid).         INDIA: MAP OF INDIA CONSTRUCTED WITH GREAT CARE AND RESEARCH FROM ALL THE LATEST AUTHORITIES AND INTENDED MORE PARTICULARLY TO FACILITATE A REFERENCE TO THE CIVIL AND MILITARY STATIONS. DEDICATED TO SIR JAMES RIVETT CARNAC, BART. ARRANGED UNDER .

London 1841 - Steel engraving, varnished with original hand colour, remounted during the 20th Century on fresh linen, with old lower wooden roller and modern upper roller (Good, map with varnish evenly toned and lightly cracked but forming a nice patina, the remounting of linen and replacement roller was executed evidently with considerable skill and expense), map: 96 x 68.5, plus rollers approximately 78 cm long. A fine early, edition of example of James Wyld’s highly important wall map of India, made under the direction of the artist and banker Robert Melville Grindlay, attractively mounted in wall map format with rollers. This fascinating map was perhaps the most influential and practically useful map of all of India produced during the mid-19th Century, a critical period in the history of the Subcontinent. The map is very well designed, with vast amounts of detail clearly expressed, with a wise economy of space. By this time, almost all of India was either directly or indirectly under the control of the British East India Company (EIC), who would govern the subcontinent until 1858. India is shown to be divided into various administrative units: the vast areas outlined in pink are under direct EIC rule, while the various princely states (autonomous Indian nations under British protection) are outlined in a variety of hues. The present map was issued in 1841, during something of a lull between two especially intense periods of British military activity and conquest in India. Looking back, beginning in the 1790s, the EIC dramatically intensified its designs towards creating an empire spanning India. After decades of intermittent conflict, the British finally crushed the Sultanate of Mysore during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1798-9). The British annexed the Kanara Coast and made what remained of Mysore a puppet state. Hyderabad became a client state of the Company in 1800 and, in 1801, the British assumed practical control over the Carnatic, with the nawab maintaining only nominal authority. The Kingdom of Travancore, occupying the southern part of the Malabar Coast, became an EIC client state around the same time. The EIC also managed to vanquish the mighty Maratha Confederacy, which during the mid-18th Century had become the dominant force in central and western India. During the three Anglo-Maratha Wars, fought between 1775 and 1818, the power of this great empire was progressively eroded. Upon the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Maratha?War (1817-1818), the British acquired practical control of all of India south of the Sutlej River (a major tributary of the Indus), with the areas newly added to its sphere including modern Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Bérard presented a workable classification of these tumors based on their gross characteristics, reviewed fifty-two reports of excision which he collected, and presented his technic for operative removal. He believed that this should always be done. Injury to the facial nerve was in his mind the only considerable hazard of the operation. Although several of his predecessors had lost patients from hemorrhage, Bérard had learned to control this factor by careful ligation of vessels supplemented by pressure." ; Ahlbom HE : Mucous and salivary-gland tumours, Acta Radiologica: Supplementum, 1935, N° 23, p. 18 : "A. Boards rubbed and worn, spine worn with rubbing. Edgewear with outer edges lacking material as is typically found. Gilt titles to spine, ""Journey Whaling Voyage"" with gilt ruled décor, rubbed and faded. Binding is fragile, shaken, but intact with but one loose page. Stunning original marbled end papers present. All neatly housed in a near fine custom tray case of brown cloth with a quarter leather spine with raised band, and gilt titles.A rather zealous log with much anticipation of an adventure mixed with reflection and responsibility. The long voyage of the Swift, piloted by Captain Fisher took him and his crew from New Bedford towards the Indian Ocean, stopping at the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, where all hands are employed baking and storing meat to replenish supplies, before pushing further east, whaling off New Holland in 1842. He sails past the Navigator Islands (Samoa), along the Equator and up to the waters off Japan. Having cruised back to Hawaii for the second time in the voyage, Fisher records 'Foure men down with the Scurvy' while on the approach to the islands (8 October 1844). After a 5 week stay in the South Pacific, and while continuing his journey Southward, Captain Fisher records numerous whale citing's including the addition of 5 original ink whale stamps, (Nov 21, 1844). Captain Francis Fisher writes of his daily accounts with the weather, the wind and the whales, describing the chase and the hauling of the great Sperms whales and noting them be ""taken to the ship and the commencement of the cutting' . His log is interwoven with two reflective poems at the front and back of the book, along with interspersed entries contemplating his life. The regular daily logs are detailed daily accountings, indicating the winds, and weather conditions. Numerous whale sightings abound in this log which appears to have been a successful voyage. The whale sightings are noted with both detailed comments and original stamp drawings of a whale 'diving' (the drawing will show the tail of the whale), however if the whale was captured the stamp drawing shows a full whale body with some red representing blood. Strong wind conditions appear to be both noted in script, but also with an original stamp drawing of a ship. Adversities are also noted with such example as upon cruising back to Hawaii for the second time in the voyage, Fisher records 'Foure men down with the Scurvy' on the approach to the islands (8 October 1844).Captain Fisher begins his log noting ""Journal of a Voyage to the Indian Ocean and Elsewhere"", and includes a preamble poem as (in part):""it was no common (illegible) that hounds my youthful heart.Trial and that... truth could only knowAnd only death can partI had no (illegible) to bestowNor none of high degreeBut all I had, a constant heartAnd true I gave to thee A Will to doWhat'er thy love might claimA high resolve, though good or illTo cling to thee the same""With the final poem, (written perhaps as a sailor ""sea chant') penned at the end of the log and signed by Francis Fisher as follows:""On the Death Of a BabeAnd in a brighter, purer sphereBeyond the sunless tombWhere virtues that have charmed us hereIn Fadeless life shall bloomYes in a brighter purer sphereBeyond the sunless tombThe virtues that have charmed us hereIn fadeless life shall bloom""Captain Fisher is further reflective on the advent of the New Year of 1843, when he acclaims – ""acknowledge my sins and imperfections are many … and I plead guilty and pray God to be merciful to me a sinner and that I may be kept from sin, and led not into temptation, and that the Lord would be with me and direct me in the path of wisdom "" – apparently using the ship's log as something resembling a confessional. His whaling voyage shows being off to a solid start with early citing's of whales, and numerous successful catches, however events really beginning to rock aboard the Swift upon reaching the equator in 1843. Several revealing examples of the daily logs include:""1842Wednesday Apr 27th ...Saw Sperm WhalesFriday Apr 29th ...saw several Sperm whales at 11 ...chasing whalesSaturday Apr 30th..First part lively breezes and fine weather at 4..one whale to the Ship Middle and Latter part calm with fine weather … commenced cuting[sic]""Friday May 13th First part strong wind from the SE Middle and Latter part the same at … seen several Sperm Whales going to the NW at 10 (knots)to Board the Boasts at 11 (knots) ...so ends these 24 hours first to ..Sat May 14. First part strong winds from the SE at 2PM took one whale to the ship at 4 to the other Boat came on board having had to cut one ship in sight, made everything ready for cutting in Middle and Latter part moderate winds and squally at 6 A.Am commenced cuting[sic] in the Whale.""The log showed a large haul representing the capturing of numerous whales in a single day in 1843 with the top of the page header stating ""On The Equator"" with an accounting of the event:""1843Sunday Nov 19th First part light wind from the E.N.E. al sail set ...whales at 9 … taking whales to the ship … at 2 PM took the last whale to the ship commenced cuting[sic], at 8 commenced baling out ""And just days later on the Nov 26th, once again they reported sighting and capturing of 5 whale,s taking them aboard the ship and ""commenced cuting [sic]"" (with the whale log showing 5 whale stamps present showing blood).A detailed and thought provoking account of one man's long and soulful journey with his crew, in pursuit of whales around the world. Spectacular presentation, and quite scarce."

Advertising for an early Travelling Wax Works Museum, including an Anatomical Cabinet and Martinet’s Elephant Clock).

S.d., s.l., but Munich, around 1841. - Typographic wall bill. Size: 20.5 x 16 inches. With three storage folds, margins minorily browned, in near fine condition. Huge wall bill advertising the exhibition of automates and waxworks, the latter of which displaying historical and mythical scenes and persons of historical and contemporary interest (Frederick the Great of Prussia together with Voltaire, Maria Stuart, Cleopatra to name a few). The main object though, listed first on the bill, was a classical Kunstkammer object: A huge elephant clock made from bronce and gold coated silver, garnished with gemstones, would show the triumphal procession of the indian Great Mogul on his elephant. Once the mechanism was started the elephant would move his eyes and ears, his trunk and tail and even fight a lion in front of him. Also the sourrounding landscape would be set in motion: snakes wriggling around, reptiles (dragons and crocodiles) snapping, insects crawling, flowers opening their blossoms and closing again. The automate was build by the famous London mechanic Hubert O’Martinet (active 1770-1790). An image of this elephant clock can be found online in the collections of Waddesdon Manor! The curators there presume, that their elephant is the same, as the one owned by Tietz and so the same as advertised on this bill (cf. also Description du musée mécanique de Georges Tietz, contenant l’éléphant mécanique d’O’ Martinet, et tableaux de l’histoire moderne et de la Bible. Rheims 1853, no. 1.). – As an annex to the exhibition of automates & waxworks there was also an anatomical cabinet, which was charged an extra admission fee for. 2000 g

Samuel Scott, the unfortunate American Diver

[London?] 1841 - Lithographed portrait. Rare portrait of an American daredevil printed shortly after his deadly fall from Waterloo Bridge. Born in Philadelphia, Scott served in the U.S. Navy where he became well known for jumping off the masts of ships. This led to a career as a stuntman and daredevil, travelling the U.S. and Canada performing his death defying leaps, including a purported 593-foot jump from Niagara Falls. On January 11, 1841, Scott planned to run from the White Lion Pub in Drury Lane to Waterloo Bridge, jump from a scaffold on the bridge into the river, and return to the pub during the hour between 1:00 and 2:00 P.M. As per previous bridge jumps, a rope attached to the scaffold allowed Scott to swing away from the bridge before diving. But on this jump, the rope wrapped around Scott's neck. The spectators erroneously thought that this was part of Scott's act, no immediate action was taken and Scott inadvertently hung himself. The present rare portrait shows a young looking Scott with Waterloo bridge and scaffolding in the background. OCLC cites but one extant example in North Americana collections. A recorded example at the Wellcome Library includes a Day & Son stamp on verso of a mount.

Christopher Wren, D.D.D., Carolus Robertus Cockerell. Dum præclare opifex tua quae manus una creavit compono en facta est altera Roma tibi. The principal works only of Sir Chr. Wren are given in this plate, but the number of them altogether (never yet collected) probably exceeds 100. The Parentalia cites 53 churches built by him in London alone & a synopsis of his public works published in 1724, cites 63 buildings.

Published by Alexr. Hill, publisher to the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Princes Street,, Edinburgh, 1841 - The works of Sir Christopher Wren Engraving. A striking montage of the works of Sir Christopher Wren. The image is dominated by Wren's greatest achievement, St Paul's Cathedral. The work features not only the great completed works such as the Royal Hospital at Greenwich, Temple Bar, the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, and Monument, but also unfinished masterpieces such as Winchester Palace. Intended as a mini-Versailles, the project ran into financial problems and the work was never completed. The print was usually sold with a key which marked all 62 buildings shown on the plan. This ambitious vision was the brainchild of Charles Robert Cockerell (1788-1863), an architect who was appointed surveyor of St Paul's Cathedral in 1819, sparking an interest in Wren's work. He was also Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy from 1839, and was the second president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1860-1861). Cockerell began gathering information for the print as early as 1825. All 136 preparatory sketches and the original watercolour on which the print is based are now housed in the RIBA Library. According to the Art Fund Review in 2006, only three impressions of the print are known, of which two are in the RIBA collection. Image: 415 by 564mm (16.25 by 22.25 inches).         De Simonia - Contemporary, original manuscript of Francisco Suarez work "De Simonia".

      8. 93 leaves ((2), 188 pages). Hardcover / Original pigskin. Very good condition with only minor split to upper hinge. Some external wear. Faint dampstain to lower margins. The manuscript seems to be either a compendium of excerpts related to Suarez' "De Simonia" or even an outline of the work. While it looks like a personal selection, a summary of chapters of the writer, the irregular corrrespondence of chapters between the manuscript and the finished work, allows us to speculate on this manuscript being a possible draft. The manuscript is quarto sized in contemporary vellum with the title penned on an upper spine compartment and the number 41 at the foot of the spine. The manuscript has a title page stating 'De Simonia' which precedes the 93 leaf treatise and is followed by two leaves of 'Index Capitum, que in hoc continentur tractatu'. The manuscript is in a regular forward sloping scribal hand with between 20 and 25 lines per page. The text is divided into 39 chapters. The Index reads: Index Capitum que in hoc continentur tractatu: I - Quid sit Simonia et uncle dicatur (identical with Chapter I of Suarez' "De Simonia" / II - Affectur divisio Simonie / III - An in peccato simoniae sit tantium malitia contra religionem an etiam contra justitiam (identical with chapter IV of "De Simonia) etc. / XVI An Beneficia Ecclesiastica sint materia Simonia Jure Divina nel Jure Ecclesiastico etc., etc. / Images of the work and the Index on request. [See full text of Francisco Suarez "De Simonia" in "Theologiae Cursus Completus" - by Jacques Paul Migne (Tomus Decimus-Septimus: De Censuris - De Irregularitatibus - De Simonia - De Oratione) Paris, 1841]. Francisco Suárez (5 January 1548 25 September 1617) was a Spanish Jesuit priest, philosopher and theologian, one of the leading figures of the School of Salamanca movement, and generally regarded among the greatest scholastics after Thomas Aquinas. His work is considered a turning point in the history of second scholasticism, marking the transition from its Renaissance to its Baroque phasis. His most important philosophical achievements were in metaphysics and the philosophy of law. Suárez may be considered the last eminent representative of mediaeval scholasticism. He adhered to a moderate form of Thomism and developed metaphysics as a systematic enquiry. For Suárez, metaphysics was the science of real essences (and existence) it was mostly concerned with real being rather than conceptual being, and with immaterial rather than with material being. He held (along with earlier scholastics) that essence and existence are the same in the case of God (see ontological argument), but disagreed with Aquinas and others that the essence and existence of finite beings are really distinct. He argued that in fact they are merely conceptually distinct: rather than being really separable, they can only logically be conceived as separate. On the vexed subject of universals, he endeavored to steer a middle course between the realism of Duns Scotus and the nominalism of William of Occam. His position is a little bit closer to nominalism than that of Thomas Aquinas. Sometimes he is classified as a moderate nominalist, but his admitting of objective precision (praecisio obiectiva) ranks him with moderate realists. The only veritable and real unity in the world of existences is the individual to assert that the universal exists separately ex parte rei would be to reduce individuals to mere accidents of one indivisible form. Suárez maintains that, though the humanity of Socrates does not differ from that of Plato, yet they do not constitute realiter one and the same humanity there are as many "formal unities" (in this case, humanities) as there are individuals, and these individuals do not constitute a factual, but only an essential or ideal unity ("In such a way, that many individuals, which are said to be of the same nature, are so: only through the operation of the intellect, not through a substance or essence of things which unites them"). The formal unity, however, is not an arbitrary creation of the mind, but exists "in the nature of the thing, prior [ontologically] to any operation of the intellect". His metaphysical work, giving a remarkable effort of systematisation, is a real history of medieval thought, combining the three schools available at that time: Thomism, Scotism and Nominalism. He is also a deep commentator of Arabic or high medieval works. He enjoyed the reputation of being the greatest metaphysician of his time. He thus founded a school of his own, Suarezianism (...). Suárez made an important classification of being in Disputationes Metaphysicae (1597), which influenced the further development of theology within Catholicism (his fellow Jesuit Pedro da Fonseca having a powerful effect on Protestant Scholastic thought in the 16th and 17th centuries). In the second part of the book, disputations 28-53, Suárez fixes the distinction between ens infinitum (God) and ens finitum (created beings). The first division of being is that between ens infinitum and ens finitum. Instead of dividing being into infinite and finite, it can also be divided into ens a se and ens ab alio, i.e., being that is from itself and being that is from another. A second distinction corresponding to this one:ens necessarium and ens contingens, i.e., necessary being and contingent being. Still another formulation of the distinction is between ens per essentiam and ens per participationem, i.e., being that exists by reason of its essence and being that exists only by participation in a being that exists on its own. A further distinction is between ens increatum and ens creatum, i.e., uncreated being and created, or creaturely, being. A final distinction is between being as actus purus and being as ens potentiale, i.e., being as pure actuality and being as potential being. Suárez decided in favor of the first classification of the being into ens infinitum and ens finitum as the most fundamental, in connection with which he accords the other classifications their due. In theology, Suárez attached himself to the doctrine of Luis Molina, the celebrated Jesuit professor of Évora. Molina tried to reconcile the doctrine of predestination with the freedom of the human will and the predestinarian teachings of the Dominicans by saying that the predestination is consequent upon God's foreknowledge of the free determination of man's will, which is therefore in no way affected by the fact of such predestination. Suárez endeavoured to reconcile this view with the more orthodox doctrines of the efficacy of grace and special election, maintaining that, though all share in an absolutely sufficient grace, there is granted to the elect a grace which is so adapted to their peculiar dispositions and circumstances that they infallibly, though at the same time quite freely, yield themselves to its influence. This mediatizing system was known by the name of "congruism." Here Suárez' main importance stems probably from his work on natural law, and from his arguments concerning positive law and the status of a monarch. In his extensive work Tractatus de legibus ac deo legislatore (reprinted, London, 1679) he is to some extent the precursor of Grotius and Samuel Pufendorf, in making an important distinction between natural law and international law, which he saw as based on custom. Though his method is throughout scholastic, he covers the same ground, and Grotius speaks of him in terms of high respect. The fundamental position of the work is that all legislative as well as all paternal power is derived from God, and that the authority of every law resolves itself into His. Suárez refutes the patriarchal theory of government and the divine right of kings founded upon it---doctrines popular at that time in England and to some extent on the Continent. He argued against the sort of social-contract theory that became dominant among early-modern political philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, but some of his thinking found echoes in the more liberal, Lockean contract theorists. Human beings, argued Suárez, have a social nature bestowed upon them by God, and this includes the potential to make laws. But when a political society is formed, the authority of the state is not of divine but of human origin therefore, its nature is chosen by the people involved, and their natural legislative power is given to the ruler.[6] Because they gave this power, they have the right to take it back, to revolt against a ruler but only if the ruler behaves badly towards them, and they're obliged to act moderately and justly. In particular, the people must refrain from killing the ruler, no matter how tyrannical he may have become. If a government is imposed on people, on the other hand, they not only have the right to defend themselves by revolting against it, they are entitled to kill the tyrannical ruler. In 1613, at the instigation of Pope Paul V, Suárez wrote a treatise dedicated to the Christian princes of Europe, entitled Defensio catholicae fidei contra anglicanae sectae errores ("Defense of the Universal Catholic Faith Against the Errors of the Anglican Sect").This was directed against the oath of allegiance which James I required from his subjects. James (himself a talented scholar) caused it to be burned by the common hangman, and forbade its perusal under the 'severest penalties, complaining bitterly to Philip III that he should harbour in his dominions a declared enemy of the throne and majesty of kings.De Incarnatione (1590-1592)De sacramentis (1593-1603)Disputationes metaphysicae (1597)De divina substantia eiusque attributis (1606)De divina praedestinatione et reprobatione (1606)De sanctissimo Trinitatis mysterio (1606)De religione (1608-1625)De legibus (1612)De gratia (1619)De angelis (1620)De opere sex dierum (1621)De anima (1621)De fide, spe et charitate (1622)De ultimo fine hominis (1628) In the 18th century, the Venice edition of Opera Omnia in 23 volumes in folio (17401751) appeared, followed by the Parisian Vivès edition, 26 volumes + 2 volumes of indices (18561861) in 1965 the Vivés edition of the Disputationes Metaphysicae (volls. 25-26) was reprinted by Georg Olms, Hildesheim. From 1597 to 1636 the Disputationes Metaphysicae were published in seventeen editions no modern edition of Suárez's complete works is yet available and only few of Suárez's Disputations have been translated into English. The contributions of Suarez to metaphysics and theology exerted significant influence over 17th and 18th century scholastic theology among both Roman Catholics and Protestants. Thanks in part to the strength of Suárez's Jesuit order, his Disputationes Metaphysicae was widely taught in the Catholic schools of Spain, Portugal and Italy. It also spread from these schools to many Lutheran universities in Germany, where the text was studied especially by those who favoured Melanchthon rather than Luther's attitude towards philosophy. In a number of seventeenth-century Lutheran universities the Disputationes served as a textbook in philosophy. In a similar way, Suárez had major influence in the Reformed tradition of German and Dutch schools for both metaphysics and law, including international law. His work was highly priased, for example, by Hugo Grotius (1583-1645). His influence is evident in the writings of Bartholomaeus Keckermann (15711609), Clemens Timpler (15631624), Gilbertus Jacchaeus (15781628), Johann Heinrich Alsted (15881638), Antonius Walaeus (15731639), and Johannes Maccovius (Jan Makowski 15881644), among others.[9] This influence was so pervasive that by 1643 it provoked the Dutch Reformed theologian Jacobus Revius to publish his book-length response: Suarez repurgatus. The views of Suarez upon the human origin of political order, and his defense of tyrannicide emanating from popul

London and its Environs containing the Boundaries of the Metropolitan Boroughs, the different Railroads & Stations, the new cemeteries, roads, docks, canals, and all modern improvements. .

1841 - Steel-plate engraving, widest: 543 x 697 mm, in original outline colour, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into the original cloth covers, lacking the upper board. London : Thomas & William Boone [et al.], Unrecorded state of this detailed plan of London, extending from Edgware in the North to south to Surbiton, Beckenham and Bromley; and West to East from Harrow on the Hill and Twickenham to Ilford, Barking and Chislehurst. The map was published at an important point in the history of London, showing the early network of railway lines, the expansion of which did so much to facilitate London's population growth, and transform the city as the urban area expanded, absorbing the outlying areas depicted in this map. The rapid expansion of the network meant that publishers were compelled frequently to revise their maps to keep them current. Among the features added to the map since its first appearance in 1840 is Fenchurch Street station, although the station is not named, with the line in from Essex. Rare. This state is unrecorded in Howgego, Printed Maps of London, but cf. 372. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
