A partir du tome II, le titre devient: "Rapport annuel sur les progrès de la chimie". Cette publication réserve une place importante à la minéralogie.         France illustrated, exhibiting its landcape scenery, antiquities, military and ecclesiastical architecture

Fisher, son, & co. First Edition, illustrated with 148 engravings on steel, 96 on the first three volumes, by Thomas Allom; the fourth volume includes 52 boards including 36 by Eugène Lami and 16 by Allom. Full blue glossy Calf night. Back with false nerves decorated boards of various wheels and nets with some maroquinés boxes. boards decorated with a rich frieze Romantic and irons cold corner. Part of title in red morocco. Marbled edges. Scratches on boards. Caps and joints slightly rubbed. Superb English binding. The fourth volume, which often lack, is the translation of Summer in Paris, Jules Janin. It includes, for illustration, a Balzac Paris. Note that the first volume contains many scenes of the Pyrenees, very fashionable then. Another volume contains many scenes of the Loire (Saumur, Angers, Amboise ...). The book seeks to bring together all that is remarkable in France, both from an architectural point of view landscape, illustration accompanying the historical and descriptive text. The illustrative wealth is remarkable, and we admire as the Château de Pau as the Pantheon, the Circus Gavarni the cathedral of Orleans. The interesting is that following the trends of the time, found in engravings of characters in contemporary costumes, and often the place as it was then. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Oliver Twist. 3rd edn. 3 vols.

Chapman & Hall. 1841 Plates sl. spotted in places. Contemp. full tan calf, spines gilt in compartments, maroon morocco labels, single-ruled borders in gilt. Small monogram booklabels, WMC; bookseller's ticket: Simms & Dinham, Manchester. A v.g. handsome copy.Dickens wrote a new xii-page introduction for this edition, in which he challenged those who accused him of portraying social deprivation in too fine a detail. 'I saw no reason, when I wrote this book, why the very dregs of life ... should not serve the purpose of a moral, at least as well as its froth and cream. ... But there are people of so refined and delicate a nature, that they cannot bear the contemplation of these horrors. ... I have no desire to make proselytes among such people. I have no respect for their opinion ... do not covet their approval; and do not write for their amusement. I venture to say this without reserve; for I am not aware of any writer in our language having a respect for himself, or held in any respect by his posterity, who ever has descended to the taste of this fastidious class.'

Leuzinger, and the corresponding address on the second contreplat: Rua do Ouvidor 36, is not the name of a bookbinder, but that of a printer and photographer s Switzerland is installed in Rio de Janeiro in 1832. The Rua Ouvidor 36 is indeed the address of his shop. This was made very famous by his photographs of Brazil, which are the first that we have today. Presumably Leuzinger brought this partition of Paris and made it relate to sell in his shop, it was perhaps a special imperial order. Ve Launer Paris 1841 In-8 (18,5x27cm) (4) 174pp. relié

General Bankrupt Law, An Act to Establish Uniform System of Bankruptcy

1841. Rare Printing of 1841 Federal Bankruptcy Law [Congress, United States]. General Bankrupt Law. An Act to Establish a Uniform System of Bankruptcy Through the United States [caption title]. [Washington?: 1841]. 16 pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Stab-stitched self-wrappers. Minor edgewear, foxed, a few tiny ink stains, occasional contemporary notes in faint pencil to margins of a few leaves. $850. * Signed in type by President John Tyler. Enacted in February 1800 with a slim majority, the first Federal bankruptcy act aimed to encourage economic risk and supersede the patchwork of debtor laws in force in the different states. Never a popular law, it was routinely attacked as a shield for the financially irresponsible and finally repealed in November 1803. Claiming this would retard economic development, supporters of the defeated bill launched a campaign to restore the law or enact a similar one. Attitudes changed after the Panic of 1837 and the five-year depression that followed. Sponsored by Daniel Webster, the General Bankrupt Law was enacted in 1841. It was repealed two years later. Not found in OCLC, Hollis, or the Library of Congress.

Traité des maladies de l'oreille traduite de l'Allemand par L. Bellefroid, D. M.

Bruxelles, Hauman, 1841, in 12, de 306pp., 2 grandes planches gravées dépl. in fine, pl. toile grise époque, dos lég. passé. Cachet ex-libris au titre. Bon exemplaire. ¶ Garrison-Morton n°3367 pour l'édition allemande: "Kramer was a pioneer German otologist."

Master Humphrey's Clock. With illustrations by George Cattermole & Hablot Browne. Vol. II.

Chapman & Hall. 1841 One volume only in worn half green calf, marbled boards; lacking labels. TITLEPAGE SIGNED BY DICKENS, Paris Eighteenth February 1855. Signed on leading blank by Charles Olliffe written over an earlier signature ( - Atkinson?). With the bookplate of Florence Bell. In fold-over cloth box. This volume is referred to in Dickens's letter to Lady Olliffe of the same date, thanking her for her note 'at parting': 'I have set my grosser hand to this work with unusual pleasure ...' (An extract only of this letter is quoted from a bookseller's catalogue in the Pilgrim Edition of the Letters.) A footnote indicates that, according to the catalogue, Dickens 'inscribed and sent a book of his own'. However, the likeliest explanation is that the volume was delivered to Dickens at the Hotel Meurice, with Lady Olliffe's letter, for Dickens to sign at her, or her son Charles's, request - hence the unusual nature of the inscription, a simple signature and date.Dickens was friendly with Sir Joseph Olliffe and his wife Laura. Sir Joseph practised medicine in Paris, primarily for the English expatriate community and visitors from Britain. Several letters from Dickens are quoted in the Pilgrim Edition and the Olliffe's house was a regular destination when Dickens was in Paris. Florence Bell, the Olliffe's daughter, was an author of books for children.

Conchologia Systematica, or Complete System of Conchology:

London: Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans,, 1841-42. in which the lepades and conchiferous mollusca are described and classified according to their natural organization and habits. 2 volumes, quarto (274 x 206 mm). Contemporary dark green morocco-grain skiver, spines gilt and blind ruled, marbled sides, edges and endpapers. 301 handcoloured engraved plates (including numbers 114 & 114*), some heightened with gum arabic, large folding letterpress table. 20th century presentation inscription on front pastedowns, neat ownership stamp of "C. Anthony" at head of titles. Bindings lightly rubbed at extremities, a few small scrapes, occasional offsetting from plates to letterpress, a touch of foxing in places but a very good set. First edition of one of the most attractive and elusive shell books of the nineteenth century, the beautiful plates handcoloured with considerable delicacy and attention to detail. Lovell Reeve (1814-1865) was one of the leading conchologists of his day and this was his first book: "the publication costs [of which], however, used up all the moneys left to him by his father and compelled him to make a fresh start in life. An opportunity to make some money came from his purchase, at Rotterdam, of a large collection of shells amassed by the Dutch governor-general of the Moluccas, General Ryder. Its profitable sale enabled Reeve to open a shop in King William Street, Strand, where he established himself as a dealer in natural objects and as a publisher specializing in natural history books" (ODNB). His later monumental Conchologia iconica (1843-78) ran to twenty volumes and "remains a valuable record of descriptive conchology in the middle years of the nineteenth century" (ibid.)

INDIA: MAP OF INDIA CONSTRUCTED WITH GREAT CARE AND RESEARCH FROM ALL THE LATEST AUTHORITIES AND INTENDED MORE PARTICULARLY TO FACILITATE A REFERENCE TO THE CIVIL AND MILITARY STATIONS. DEDICATED TO SIR JAMES RIVETT CARNAC, BART. ARRANGED UNDER .

London 1841 - Steel engraving, varnished with original hand colour, remounted during the 20th Century on fresh linen, with old lower wooden roller and modern upper roller (Good, map with varnish evenly toned and lightly cracked but forming a nice patina, the remounting of linen and replacement roller was executed evidently with considerable skill and expense), map: 96 x 68.5, plus rollers approximately 78 cm long. A fine early, edition of example of James Wyld’s highly important wall map of India, made under the direction of the artist and banker Robert Melville Grindlay, attractively mounted in wall map format with rollers. This fascinating map was perhaps the most influential and practically useful map of all of India produced during the mid-19th Century, a critical period in the history of the Subcontinent. The map is very well designed, with vast amounts of detail clearly expressed, with a wise economy of space. By this time, almost all of India was either directly or indirectly under the control of the British East India Company (EIC), who would govern the subcontinent until 1858. India is shown to be divided into various administrative units: the vast areas outlined in pink are under direct EIC rule, while the various princely states (autonomous Indian nations under British protection) are outlined in a variety of hues. The present map was issued in 1841, during something of a lull between two especially intense periods of British military activity and conquest in India. Looking back, beginning in the 1790s, the EIC dramatically intensified its designs towards creating an empire spanning India. After decades of intermittent conflict, the British finally crushed the Sultanate of Mysore during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1798-9). The British annexed the Kanara Coast and made what remained of Mysore a puppet state. Hyderabad became a client state of the Company in 1800 and, in 1801, the British assumed practical control over the Carnatic, with the nawab maintaining only nominal authority. The Kingdom of Travancore, occupying the southern part of the Malabar Coast, became an EIC client state around the same time. The EIC also managed to vanquish the mighty Maratha Confederacy, which during the mid-18th Century had become the dominant force in central and western India. During the three Anglo-Maratha Wars, fought between 1775 and 1818, the power of this great empire was progressively eroded. Upon the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Maratha?War (1817-1818), the British acquired practical control of all of India south of the Sutlej River (a major tributary of the Indus), with the areas newly added to its sphere including modern Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

J. Cancer, 1933, n° 43 : "This was the first comprehensive treatise on parotid tumors. Bérard presented a workable classification of these tumors based on their gross characteristics, reviewed fifty-two reports of excision which he collected, and presented his technic for operative removal. He believed that this should always be done. Injury to the facial nerve was in his mind the only considerable hazard of the operation. Although several of his predecessors had lost patients from hemorrhage, Bérard had learned to control this factor by careful ligation of vessels supplemented by pressure." ; Ahlbom HE : Mucous and salivary-gland tumours, Acta Radiologica: Supplementum, 1935, N° 23, p. 18 : "A. Berard's thesis in 1841 was a great forward step in the development. He tried for the first time to make a classification of the enlargements which are commonly found in the parotid gland.
