The Works of Benjamin Franklin : Containing several Political and Historical Tracts not included in any former edition, and many Letters Official and Private, not hitherto published. With Notes and Life of the Author by Jared Sparks [complete 10 volume set]

Hilliard, Gray, and Company, Boston 1840 - Seven volumes professionally rebacked with original spine remnants laid on. Random foxing, light wear. Solid copies. ; Ten of ten volumes, complete set. A Checklist of American Imprints for 1840, 40-2431. William Thomas Lowndes, The Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature, volume 2, page 834. Joseph Sabin, A Dictionary of Books relating to America, 25606. Well regarded as a founder of the academic study of American history, later President of Harvard, Jared Sparks rescued much of the papers of key American leaders of the American Revolution. Bookplates of George Brinley and J Hammond Trumbull on pastedown of volume I. George Brinley, of Hartford, was a leading collector of American history, and the five auctions of his library 1878-1880 were landmark events. J Hammond Trumbull, state librarian of Connecticut, one of the founders and a President of the American Philological Association, and thirty years President of the Connecticut Historical Society, was given rights in Brinley's will to purchase a given value of books at the auctions without payment. Sparks' Works of Benjamin Franklin was the definitive nineteenth-century version, and this particular set has fascinating provenance and associations. ; 10 v pages [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Plan of the Floating Dry Dock, and Articles of Association of the New York Floating Dry Dock Co., of the City of New York

Alexander S. Gould, New York 1840 - Pamphlet, 8vo, original printed wrappers, large folding plate, 15 pp. Wrappers with a few chips and tears, and partially detached, but still connected, small notation on front wrapper, and short inscription on reverse of front wrapper, normal aging, folding plate shows a little foxing, but in very good shape overall. Very scarce title that presents a plan to build a floating dry dock to be used to repair ships. According to the discussion, the dry dock was to be based on a design by Joseph T. Martin, which he had a patent pending for in Washington. The purpose of this pamphlet was basically to give the reader a feel for the plan and some idea how it would work. The floating dry dock could repair and copper all kinds of ships, and would be made in sections constructed of strong timbers. The folding plate shows a ship on the dry dock, and comments suggest it could raise a vessel that was two thousand tons. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Master Humphrey's Clock

London Chapman and Hall,, 1840-1. With illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. 3 volumes bound as 2, duodecimo in half sheets (260 x 174 mm). Contemporary half calf, gilt-tooled raised bands to spines, spines numbered and gilt ruled with clock designs in gilt to heads, blind roll tool to spines and covers, marbled sides. Frontispieces, illustrations in text by Cattermole and Browne. Bookplates to front pastedowns with purple ink smudged across names. Joints starting, wear to covers and extremities, foxing to endpapers, edges toned. A very good copy. First edition, first issue, with all the required issue points as stated by Smith. Master Humphrey's Clock contains Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge, what Gordon Ray describes as "the pinnacle of Dickensian Gothic". He also notes that Phiz (H. K. Browne) "is in excellent form" and that George Cattermole's "wonderful clutter of antiquarian or architectural detail is well suited to Dickens's chosen subjects". Master Humphrey's Clock was a publishing experiment on Dickens's part, unique in his canon, of issuing two novels together.

Views in Kairo. [Illustrations of Cairo].

London: Tilt and Bogue, n.d. [1840].. FINE LITHOGRAPHIC ALBUM. Elephant Folio (55 x 37cm). A complete collection of 29 fine lithographs with a decorative lithographic title page and a lithographic dedication plate. Each plate with a recent tissue guard. In recent green half morocco with raised bands, gilt titles to spine and green cloth boards. Clean plates with some professional repair work to some edges and corners carried out at time of re-binding. A 1cm tear to top edge of the Bar en Nasr plate has formed since restoration. Repairs thus: top corner of title plate; top corner of dedication plate; top corner of Beyb el-Kasreyn plate; top edge of Fountain of el-Mudaffar plate; top corner of Boolak part 2 plate; top corner of Entrance to the Great Mosque plate. All the lithographic images themselves are clean, bright and unaffected by restoration. Very good overall. Together with the Orientalist Edward William Lane, to whom this volume is dedicated, Hay took part in an early archaeological / treasure-gathering expedition to Egypt between 1826 and 1838. Although the British Museum owns an extensive archive of Hay's drawings and diaries, this collection of lithographs, mainly from drawings by another of Hay's companions Owen Carter, is the only published example of their work. The plates mainly depict mosques, gates and street scenes from Islamic Cairo, rather than antiquities or ancient architecture.
