1840. IV pp. text.Very rare drawing manual with exceptionally fine plates by mainly 17th-century old masters. The confirmed artists of the prints are: Jan van Almeloveen, Cornelis Danckerts (I), Pieter de Molijn, Nicolas Perelle, Gillis van Scheyndel (I), Claes Jansz. Visscher (I). Furthermore the title-page names Silvestre, Quinault, Della Bella, Nolpe, Schenk and Vermeulen, which we could not confirm. Possibly several prints in this album are unknown works by these masters. The signatures and marks were erased from the plates, making these prints all new states. Only the first 10 plates are typical instructional illustrations, showing the basics of geometry and anatomy. The other 66 are all high quality engravings and etchings by the most renowned Dutch and international old masters. These served the readers as examples for drawing. The plates are of remarkable high quality, especially for a manual, the imprints are very fresh and well inked. They show beautiful and professional drawing models of finished landscapes, seascapes, architectural and other views, genre pieces, etc. The plates are of various sizes and forms, several circular, and also of various styles, both in design and in the art of engraving, several including the use of chiaroscuro. A short introduction and explanation of the first 6 "onderwysplaatjens" (teaching plates) is present. On verso of the title-page a motto from Formey is given: "Men kan zichzelven onderwijzen in het teekenen van eenige kleene voorwerpen: vooral van landschappen" (One can teach oneself the drawing of some small objects: especiall … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Greece, 1840s]. Oblong 8vo, album with 20 pencil, pen, and watercolour drawings in grey wash, bistre and highlighted with white (120 x 170 mm; sometimes a little smaller); evenly lightly browned, a few spots in the margins; brown half sheep overt black pebble-grained boards, front cover lettered in gilt; a little worn and rubbed - together with a larger (159 x 234 mm) architectural drawing in the same style and hand, mounted on board. A fine album of watercolours illustrating the main ancient sites of Athens a few years after Greek independence. The monuments are depicted in resplendent isolation before the inevitable encroachments of modernity and civilisation. The Odeon is here seen still engulfed in rubbish; weeds and plant life picturesquely decorate the crevices of the ruins; and lumps of masonry lie scattered over the sites before nineteenth century restorers slotted them back in place. Byron worship was still in the ascendant and this together with the accessibility of the country to tourist after Turkish rule made Athens a more practical attraction for the romantically inclined traveller. The upper cover is lettered 'Antiquites Grecques' which could indicate a French origin, but the quality of the album and the style of binding suggest the work may be Greek and made for the embryonic tourist trade. All the main antiquities are illustrated, or at least those that were visible before extensive excavations began. The views include the Acropolis, Parthenon, Erechtheio, Karyatides statues of the Erechtheion, Propylaea gallery, Nike temple, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Phil … [Click Below for Full Description]

The conjuror holds the book by its spine in his left hand so that it faces the audience and flips through it with the thumb and fore-fingers of his right hand. [Likely Great Britain. ca.1840s-1860s]. Oil on Canvas. Untitled [Landscape with Pot Bank]. 62cm x 76cm unframed. (Approx. 241?2 x 30 inches). Professionally cleaned, conserved and re-lined (full treatment report with photo documentation available on request). Nineteenth century landscape painting documenting a "Pot Bank" or pottery manufactory, an industrial complex of buildings for the commercial manufacture of ceramics. Additionally, ten workers-men women and children, including a supervisor in an elevated loading bay-inhabit the smoke-filled scene, the soot from the kilns and chimneys rising in columns to meet a cloud-filled sky. This painting depicts three large bottle ovens or kilns for firing ceramics. On the right, there can be seen a smaller glost oven for firing glazed wares. The pot bank depicted here is typical of those seen in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England, the center of the English pottery industry. According to decorative arts and material culture scholar Prof. J. Ritchie Garrison, the painting is likely English, painted in the 1840s-1860s, and depicts a manufactory similar to a surviving 19th century pot bank maintained by the Gladstone Pottery Museum in Staffordshire. He describes the scene in the painting in this way: "The long low warehouses were where the firm housed various processes used in production: molds for slip casting, wheels for throwing pots, jollying equipment for standardizing forms, facilities for making saggars into which the pots were placed for firing, and the all-important shop for refining and processing clays. The tall squar … [Click Below for Full Description]

1840. Elijah Abel Signed Auto Early Nauvoo First African American Mormon Very Rare! Elijah Abel/Able was the first African American Mormon, an early convert who was ordained to the priesthood, and held office of Seventy in the early church. This is a promissory note signed "Nauvoo", and is signed with Abel's mark, "X." This is one of the earliest documents using the name "Nauvoo," which name wouldn't be official for several more months. I'm only aware of several other LDS documents--typically letters that refer to Nauvoo before this date--February 27, 1840. A very rare and collectible document, professionally framed, and very unique. The document is preserved in a plastic sleeve in the frame.

Porter, William Peacock
Ohio & Pennsylvania, 1840. 12mo, approximately 192 pages, in ink; marbled edges and endpapers, stiff vellum boards, boards soiled, clasp lost, first gathering loose, text clean and writing legible. This notebook consists of records of the finances, business, and reference material of William Peacock Porter, an otherwise anonymous individual who appears to have arrived in the US sometime around 1840 from Sunderland, Durham, in Britain. It appears that entries dated before 1844 were recorded in England, and entries after that date were recorded in either Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or Cincinnati, Ohio. He appears to have been employed in blacksmith work, with many pages of his notes dedicated to the production of chains, anvils, boilers, and ships. He keeps track of his workload, wages and grocery expenses, as well as keeps reference on the value of chain. One table shows "the size of chain requisit for vessels according to their tonnage." The book also includes periodic records of Porter's personal expenses. These entries typically list the date of the transaction, the product purchased, and the cost of the item. Among Porter's purchases were groceries, oil, and a broom. Occasionally he makes notes of his employers, which include the Durham coalmine Ludworth Colliery; producers of train cars in Cincinnati Keck & Davenport; Douglas and English Co.; and Williams Forster and Co. Little is said about his movement, but one entry does record his travel: "Nov. 26 went to Cincinnati and from thence to Louisville. Arrived at Pittsburgh on the 26th of Dec 1849." Most entries are made in … [Click Below for Full Description]
