TOCQUEVILLE, Alexis de.
Second complete Brussels edition, in the scarce and appealing original wrappers, of de Tocqueville's magnum opus. The first appearances of De la démocratie en Amérique in Brussels were published by Louis Hauman in the same years as the first editions (Paris: Charles Gosselin, 1835 & 1840). Meline also published a two volume set in 1840, but this, in five volumes, presented the work as complete. Arising out of the tour of America that de Tocqueville undertook to examine the penitentiary system, Democracy in America was early recognised not only as a remarkably insightful study of the origins and nature of American society and consequently her unique institutions, but also as a founding document of a new form of social and political science. It was justly praised by John Stuart Mill in the London Review in such terms as to guarantee its immediate and continued success: "It has at once taken its rank among the most remarkable productions of our time; and is a book with which, both for its facts and its speculations, all who would understand, or who are called upon to exercise influence over their age, are bound to be familiar. It will contribute to give to the political speculations of our time a new character." It ran to thirteen editions by 1850 and each of its parts was translated into English in the same year it was first published. Mill's farsightedness in terms of de Tocqueville's influence is confirmed in a recent review of an updated translation by Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton, and Director of that university's James Madison Prog … [Click Below for Full Description]

CATLIN, George (1796-1872)
[Great Britain, 1840. Together, 4pp. Each approximately 7 x 4 3/8 inches. Usual folds. Housed in a morocco backed slipcase Three personal, handwritten letters by the artist George Catlin to his friend, Captain William Henry Shippard. During the 1830s, George Catlin, a self-taught artist, traveled the Great Plains of the American West, absorbing the ways of the North American Indian tribes he found still flourishing there. Over the next decade, Catlin embarked on a journey to create a faithful visual study of the people, customs, and surroundings of the tribes he was welcomed by, which culminated in his numerous publications of prints and drawings of North American Indians. These letters offer a more intimate look into Catlin's daily thoughts and matters, at a time when he had returned from the West and was in England working on his portfolios and exhibition of his works. The letters are each written to Capt. William Henry Shippard, who Catlin describes in his Notes of Eight Years Travels and Residence in Europe , as "my best of friends." Shippard worked on Catlin's behalf in the exhibition and attempted sale of his collection, and further assisted in his research as a reader at the British Museum. The letters comprise: 1] Autograph letter signed to Captain William Henry Shippard, 4th January 1847. 1p. & envelope, sending him a picture: "I send you 'My Horse Charley &c" like the other, the crude & original sketch, made at one colouring; and which I am ashamed to send you in such a state ... [Cox, David Sr.]
United Kingdom, 1840. Very good condition. A lovely ink and wash watercolor view of an old stone bridge spanning a small river, two people visible at the top, and a soft blue impressionistic landscape in the distance. The bridge has three rounded arches, and a wide curving balustraded approach. The watercolor is titled in pencil at the lower left "Perry Bridge", not signed, but attributed to David Cox. David Cox senior (1783-1859), British landscape painter, is considered to be one of the greatest English landscape painters, a central figure in the golden age of watercolor. Cox was one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape painters. Along with Thomas Creswick and Thomas Baker, Cox's looser style was a precursor to the development of Impressionism. "Rhyl Sands" (Wales) of ca. 1854 by Cox is a perfect example of this. The watercolor not signed, but with a W. J. Cross, Handsworth printed label laid down on verso, with the artist recorded as David Cox. The label with a date in red biro "1963" presumably the date that the gallery exhibited the work. The watercolor laid down on mat board, 10 1/2 x 7", on board 12 x 10".The Tate holds a small David Cox watercolor titled 'The Bridge', of similarThe mat board with traces of old adhesive around the margins, touching one small area at the upper left corner.

MARTENS, FREDERIC - SCHWEIGHOFER.
Innsbruck, F. Unterberger, 1840 circa.

James Fenimore Cooper
1840. James Fenimore Cooper's "LEATHERSTOCKING TALES" in FIVE VOLUMES. Easton Press leather bound set, with golden gilt edging and sewn in ribbon marker. The 5 are: 1) THE PIONEERS; 2) LAST OF THE MOHICANS; 3) THE PRARIE; 4) THE PATHFINDER; 5) THE DEERSLAYER. Meet the famous frontiersman Natty Bumppo, in this saga variously known as Hawkeye, the Pathfinder, the Deerslayer, Leatherstocking (plus other names). Meet too his friends Chingachgook and Uncas (the latter the "last" Mohican). Cooper wrote these early American novels from 1840 on, and set them in the historic time span of 1740-1804. The series is not strictly chronological; some sequels are actually prequels. The saga begins in upstate NY (yes Cooperstown is named for his family) and makes its way westward. These books have been an important source of American legend since their publication, and the source for many film adaptations as well. Great condition in all respects. Blank Easton Press nameplate in each. Beautiful gold embossed series cover/spine design. An excellent addition to a library of Americana. Shipped with USPS Media Mail by next business day after payment.

Dickens, Charles
Chapman and Hall, London, 1840. First edition of this collection of short stories which originally appeared as a weekly periodical of the same name. Large octavo, 3 volumes bound into one in three quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised gilt bands, red morocco spine label, engraved frontispieces, illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. In very good condition. Master Humphrey's Clock originally appeared in the form of a weekly periodical, published between April of 1840 and December of 1841. Entirely written and edited by Dickens, the magazine included both short stories and two novels (The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge). Many of the short stories acted as frame stories to the novels, and although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together, he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848, and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However, the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock, which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. Cruikshank, George
N.d. [c. 1840's], 1840. . Original sketch signed by George Cruikshank (1792-1878). The paper measures 19cm x 23cm. and is laid down to a slightly larger card backing. Apparently removed from a mount with glue residue to the edges, not affecting the image. The image measure approx. 9cm x 12cm and is in pen & ink and delicate pastel colours, showing a theatre stage and backdrop with three actors on stage and a top-hatted man in the orchestra pit. There is a pencilled date of '1844, Arthur O'Leary' below Cruikshank's signature. Quite likely a scene from the Charles Lever novel of that title. Scarce original sketch.. Very Good .

Leipzig: 1840. Historical book. This was presented to the reverend Francis Kilvert by J. B. Winter in the year 1847. A sprig from his residence has been inserted and anchored to the inside front page one year after Rev. Kilvert died, in 1864 and is inscribed. Francis Kilvert (1793-1863) was an English cleric, schoolmaster, antiquary, and literary editor. His nephew was the famous diarist, Francis Kilvert (1840-). Born at Westgate Street, Bath, Somerset on Good Friday 1793, he was the eldest son of Francis Kilvert, coachmaker, and Anna his wife; his uncle was Richard Kilvert, domestic chaplain to Bishop Richard Hurd and rector of Hartlebury. Orphaned while still young, and the eldest of seven sons, he became guardian to his brothers. For a time he was educated under Dr. Michael Rowlandson at Hungerford. He then went to the Bath grammar school, where Nathaniel Morgan had him as an assistant. He matriculated at Worcester College, Oxford, on 6 November 1811, and graduated B.A. in 1819 and M.A. in 1824. Kilvert was ordained deacon by Richard Beadon, bishop of Bath and Wells, in 1816, and priest in 1817; his first curacy was at Claverton, near Bath. He declined the post of principal of Queen's College, Birmingham, stayed in Bath, and took on minor posts, including minister of St. Mary Magdalen's Chapel, chaplain of the General Hospital, and evening lecturer at St. Mary's, Bathwick. His main income came from keeping pupils. In 1837 Kilvert bought Claverton Lodge, on the southern slope of Bathwick Hill, where he took scholars for the rest of his life. Alfred GUESDON (Nantes 1808 - ?)
Alfred Guesdon was born in Nantes, June the 13th 1808. Once he finished his classical studies, in 1829, he went to Paris, to study architecture as a pupil of Antoine Martin Garnaud. Starting from 1830, he devoted himself to experimentations and researches on the art of lithography, especially on historical subjects, views and landscapes he took from his many trips around Europe. The distinctiveness of these views is the fact that they are the first representations of the cities from above, realized on board of an air balloon. In 1849 he published the lithographic plates in the famous L'Italie à vol d'oiseau., o storia e descrizione sommaria delle principali citt … [Click Below for Full Description]

LONGWORTH, JOHN AUGUSTUS
ondon : Henry Colburn, Publisher, Great Marlborough Street, 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. [Historical Record of the Circassian people before genocide] 2 volume set. Bound in contemporary red calf. Gilt ruled. Minor rubbing to cover. All edges marbled. Marbled end pages. 7 lithographed plates. Clean, unmarked pages. Mylar dust jackets. Armorial bookplates of Charles James Monk. Contemporary gift inscription from W. S. Dugdale (Eton 1843, of Merevale, Warwickshire) to Monk. William Stratford Dugdale, 1800-1871, was an MP and noted Tory politician. Ref: Atabey 727. <br> Following the conclusion of the Caucasian War (1817-1864), ethnic Circassians (Cerkes) were forcibly expelled from the northern Caucasus by the Russian Empire. Longworth's narrative captures the history and customs of peoples two decades before they were dispersed into the Ottoman Empire. Between 400,000 and 600,000 people were ethnically cleansed, many perished on their journey to Ottoman Empire. Many of the Circassian refugees were used by the Ottomans as Muslim settlers in Bulgaria, Greece and other predominately Christian areas to counter-Christian population's influence. The Porte ordered thousands of Christian homes to be emptied of their inhabitants to accommodate the Circassian refugees, further exacerbating ethnic and religious tensions in the Ottoman Empire.
