PARDOE, (Julia).
London, G. Virtue; Hamburg, B.S. Berendsohn, (1840).4to. Contemporary red polished morocco, spine and sides richly gilt with rococo decorations, double gilt fillets on sides enclosing on the front-side a Turkish half-moon on back-side the initials H.M., a.e.g. With steel-engraved portrait of Julia Pardoe, title-page of the English edition, map, and 78 plates from drawings by William H. Bartlett. IV,161 pp.Rare German edition. - Julia Pardoe's (1806-1862) first book was published when she was only fourteen. In Beauties of the Bosphorus she provides a text for the sublime steel engravings after William Bartlett. These are among the earliest of his Eastern series to appear. Bartlett had returned from his first Eastern journey in 1835. For Pardoe it was her only book which achieved any long-lasting success (Robinson p.190). Including in it are descriptions of the Yeni Cami, the New Mosque of the Valide Sultan , Hadice Rurhan. Pardoe's matter-of-fact but lively account manages to convey the vibrancy of the crowded and noisy port and fish-market in striking contrast to the serenity of the mosque and mausoleum complex (Tuson p. 86). Miss Pardoe became an authority on life in Turkey (Theakstone p.206). - Superb clean copy in a beautiful binding. Blackmer Collection 1254; Atabey Collection 922.

By the early 1830s Agnes and Elizabeth were devoting part of the morning to reading historical manuscripts in the British Museum Library, with instruction in palaeography from the staff. 'Facts not opinions' was the motto adopted by the sisters, and their manuscript research was both pioneering and intensive" (ODNB). DICKENS, Charles.
London: Chapman and Hall, 1840-41. London: Chapman and Hall,, 1840-41. Original cloth 3 volumes, large octavo. Original brown cloth (Smith's binding variant), spines lettered and decorated in gilt, covers blocked in gilt and blind, marbled endpapers. Housed in brown cloth slipcase. Printed frontispieces and 194 woodcut illustrations, of which 154 are by Browne, 19 by Cattermole, and 1 by Daniel Maclise. Spines sunned and lightly bumped at ends, a little rubbed, contents clean. An excellent copy. First edition in book-form of what Gordon Ray describes as "the pinnacle of Dickensian Gothic". He goes on to note that Phiz (H. K. Browne) "is in excellent form" and that George Cattermole's "wonderful clutter of antiquarian or architectural detail is well suited to Dickens's chosen subjects". Master Humphrey was a publishing experiment on Dickens's part, unique in his canon, of issuing two novels together: The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Eckel p. 67 ff; Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914, 60; Smith I, 6.

POE, EDGAR ALLAN
Philadelphia, 1840. First printing of this notice on the Daguerreotype, which had been invented the previous year. Poe notes of photography, until the transcript can be produced on paper, its use can never prove detrimental to the interests of the engraver. This is true in part, but then the production of the Daguerreotype effects on paper is likely to be soon accomplished. Poe ends by objecting to the American pronunciation of Daguerreotype, one that persists to this day. Poe edited Alexander s Weekly Messenger from late 1839 through this issue of May 6, 1840. This number includes four additional identified appearances by Poe and likely many more than have yet to be attributed. This enormous broadsheet is a rare survival. Broadsheet. 4 pp. Old folds. Some wear. [Attributes: First Edition]

POE, EDGAR ALLAN
Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, 1840. FIRST EDITION. Contains the first printing of William Wilson. This allegorical tale of the soul s encounter with the spectre conscience is deeply autobiographical. William Wilson shares Poe s birthday, and the setting for the story recalls elements from Poe s childhood school days in England as well as his university days at Charlottesville. This autobiographical tale of doubleness, which Robertson describes as in my opinion the most profound expression of psychological introspection ever formulated, holds important clues to Poe s development as a child and young man. Original deluxe calf with bright, ornate gilt-stamped decorations and vignettes. Some wear, foxing. This is the rarest publisher s gift binding for The Gift for 1840. Alfred GUESDON (Nantes 1808 - ?)
Alfred Guesdon was born in Nantes, June the 13th 1808. Once he finished his classical studies, in 1829, he went to Paris, to study architecture as a pupil of Antoine Martin Garnaud. Starting from 1830, he devoted himself to experimentations and researches on the art of lithography, especially on historical subjects, views and landscapes he took from his many trips around Europe. The distinctiveness of these views is the fact that they are the first representations of the cities from above, realized on board of an air balloon. In 1849 he published the lithographic plates in the famous L'Italie à vol d'oiseau., o storia e descrizione sommaria delle principali citt … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adeodato Malatesta (Modena 1806 - Modena 1891)
1840. Disegno a penna misure: mm 253 x 325 Pittore, disegnatore e restauratore italiano. Firmato e datato a penna: "Malatesti Adeodato fece 1840" e dedica in basso a destra a penna: "All'Illust. Sign. Marchese Tacoli / estimatore dell'Arti Belle. Malatesti Adeodato / in attestato di sincera amicizia." Nel verso è presente a penna … [Click Below for Full Description]

Her father was Richard Mackenzie Bacon (1776-1844), the proprietor of the Whig Norwich Mercury, a leading provincial organ of liberal opinion. He was later joined in this venture by W. Kinnebrook and David Kinnebrook, and his son Richard Noverre Bacon (1798-1884) - hence the imprint of the present title. A contributor to a vast array of publications, particularly those with a focus on music, Richard Mackenzie Bacon "wrote most of the (usually unsigned) pieces, along with his daughters, Louisa and Mary Ann. Brugman in 1840. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Rümker, Carl
Hamburg, 1840. Five manuscript signed letters by renowned astronomer Carl Ludwig Christian Rümker (1788-1862) who previously made a notable discovery whilst employed as astronomer at the Parramatta observatory in Australia; all letters addressed to another astronomer of high repute, John Lee (1783-1866), mainly concerning astronomical matters and observations, featuring 4 manuscript astrological data charts, two of these with Rümker's ephemiris calculations. 8vo. Double leafs, each letter with integral address, some with red wax seal. Some creasing and age-toning, otherwise in very good condition. Carl Ludwig Christian Rümker (1788-1862) was a German astronomer, who lived in Australia from 1821 to 1830, first arriving at New South Wales for his appointment by the new governor of New South Wales Sir Thomas MacDougall Brisbane, as astronomer at the Parramatta observatory. (Renowned Scottish astronomer James Dunlop was his second assistant.) Governor Brisbane's private astronomical observatory was constructed in 1822. That same year Rümker received, for his re-discovery of Comet Encke on 2 June 1822, the gold medal of the Institut de France, and the silver medal of the Royal Astronomical Society together with £100. The grateful governor bestowed on Rümker a grant of 1000 acres (405 ha) at Stonequarry Creek (Picton) on the west side of the Nepean River. After his important observation of Encke's Comet in 1822 while serving as Government Astronomer of the Colony of New South Wales, Carl Rümker continued his field of astronomy in his homeland, and evidently, within the broad scop … [Click Below for Full Description]
