Zürich und Winterthur, Literarisches Comptoir, 1841-1843.. . Borst 1985.

        Colin Clink. In three volumes

London - Richard Bentley, 1841. London - Richard Bentley, 1841 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A very scarce first edition of this early Victorian novel, illustrated by Leech and Cruikshank. First Edition. Complete in three volumes. Featuring 14 plates, including a frontispiece to each volume. With half titles to each volume. With the pictorial bookplates of Reuben Jay Flick to the front pastedowns. With bookbinder's stamps for Morrell, London, to the front free endpapers. Charles Hooton (18101847), novelist and journalist, was probably born on 10 May 1810. According to later applications submitted to the Royal Literary Fund, Hooton studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. In 1836, while editing a newspaper in Leeds, Hooton published The Adventures of Bilberry Thurland. In 1837 he moved to London and published in Bentley's Miscellany a novel called Colin Clink (republished 1841). As the sub-editor of the True Sun, Hooton wrote a series of articles on the subject of political economy. In 1840 he edited another short-lived paper, The Woolsack, in which he attacked the abuses of the court of chancery. Following the collapse of The Woolsack, Hooton left for Texas, where for nine months he attempted to live off the land, farming, hunting, and fishing. He afterwards undertook newspaper work in New Orleans, New York, and Montreal, but his failing health prompted him to return to England. He wrote a series of ballads for the New Monthly Magazine illustrative of American life and literature, and a novel called Launcelot Wedge, which was running in Ainsworth's Magazine at the time of his death (republished 1849). Hooton's account of his experiences in the United States and Canada was published posthumously as St Louis' Isle, or, Texiana (1847). With his wife, Emily (d. after 1847), he had a child; the Royal Literary Fund archive records that his wife left him after he had attempted to kill her and their child. He died on 16 February 1847 from an overdose of morphine at his father's residence in Nottingham, to which he had been moved having been certified insane while in Texas. According to a late twentieth-century assessment of his writing, his sub-Dickensian fiction, though quirky, has its powerfully atmospheric and comic moments (Sutherland, 305). DNB. Condition: In full calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, some rubbing to the extremities and sunning to the spines. Front joint of volume I very slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Generally clean with a few scattered spots and marks prominent to the plates. Overall: GOOD..

        Old Saint Paul's:

London - Hugh Cunningham, 1841. London - Hugh Cunningham, 1841 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Old St. Paul's: A Tale of the Plague and the Fireis a novel by William Harrison Ainsworth first serially published in 1841. It is a historical romance that describes the events of the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London. With twentylovely engraved illustrations by John Franklin. First edition thus. In three volumes complete. William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882) was an English historical novelist. Ainsworth briefly tried the publishing business, but soon gave it up and devoted himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of thirty-nine novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. Old St. Paul's was not illustrated by George Cruikshank, the illustrator of many of Ainsworth's works, and this caused problems between the two. It is uncertain why Ainsworth did not choose Cruikshank, and Cruikshank criticised Ainsworth in a pamphlet titled Artist and Author (1872). In the work, Cruikshank claims that he originated many of Ainsworth's works along with being the one that came up with the idea for Old St. Paul's and that Ainsworth stole the idea. The original edition was not illustrated, but John Franklin made 20 illustrations for the three volume edition. Cruikshank was originally offered the position of illustrator before Franklin, but he turned it down due to too many prior commitments. Condition: In half morocco bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and the odd mark to boards. Front joint starting to one volume with backstrip liftingslightly. Two hinges strained. Internally, firmly bound but with one plate loose to volume one, all plates are present. Bright and generally clean but with offsetting from some plates to opposite pages, the odd spot and handling mark. Overall: GOOD.

History of Scotland. In nine volumes

43 - Edinburgh - William Tait, 1841. 43 - Edinburgh - William Tait, 1841 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete set of Tytler's pioneering History, which helped set the standard for objective historical research. Second Edition. Complete in nine volumes. Covers the history of Scotland from 1149 - 1603. With the bookplates of Reginald Thornton, Dorchester, to the front pastedowns. Patrick Fraser Tytler (17911849) was a Scottishhistorian. Up to about the time of his first marriage, Tytler was unsure whether to devote himself to literature or history. A turning point for Tytler had come in 1823, while he was staying at Abbotsford as a guest of Walter Scott, who proposed to him that he should write a new history of Scotland. There had been no major one since William Robertson's of 1759. A vast amount of lost information was becoming available again from the herculean labours of Thomas Thomson (17681852), depute clerk register and another leading light of the Bannatyne Club, who had spent twenty years reducing to order the chaotic public records of Scotland. It was now clear that they would permit the entire history of the country to be rewritten, and Scott was anxious for a man energetic, talented, and youthful enough to take on the job. For Tytler it proved indeed to be his life's work. In the way he executed Scott's commission, Tytler helped bring about something of a revolution in British historical method. He did not yet aspire to raise his discipline to fully scientific status, in the manner of the German school founded by Leopold von Ranke later in the century. But he insisted on the primacy of personal research in original sources, and the superiority of these to published memoirs, partisan manifestos, popular memories, and the programmatic morality of the author as the material or the organizing principle of historiography. Utterly dedicated to his task, Tytler set future historians a high example of objectivity in his painstaking scrutiny and strict evaluation of relevant documents. If in writing them up he was understandably inclined to show off the fruits of his exertions, and include a good deal of repetitive or tenuously related citation, he has at least by his unwavering reliability saved many successors from enduring again the tedium to which he so willingly submitted himself. DNB. Condition: In decorative cloth bindings. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Fading to the spines and margins of the boards. Some marks to the boards. Rear hinge of Volume IV weak. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Some scattered light foxing. Some chipping to the fore-edge of the pages, not affecting the text. Several pages unopened. Copperplate ink signature to the half title of VolumeII. Overall: GOOD..

        The History of England

London - T. Cadell, 1841. London - T. Cadell, 1841 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete set of Smollett's history of England, spanning from the reign of William and Mary in 1689 to the death of George II in 1760. The works were originally designed as a continuation of the work of David Hume, an eminent historian of the eighteenth century. Hume's works ended with the deposition of the Catholic James II in favour of his Protestant sister Mary, and her Dutch husband William of Orange. 'In fourteen months from 1755 to 1757 Smollett wrote his four-volume Complete History of England, having instructed his servant to deny me to all those with whom I had no express business (Letters, 46). Revised in 1758, the Complete History was offered for sale in 100 sixpenny weekly pamphlets, and by 28 September 1758 he noted with satisfaction that weekly sales exceeded 10,000 copies (ibid. , 73), realizing 500 for the author. Hume wrote to Andrew Millar, bookseller, of this extraordinary run upon Dr. Smollett (Hume, Letters, 1. 273), and he jocularly reproved William Robertson for replacing him near the historical summit of Parnassus, immediately under Dr. Smollett (ibid. , 1. 302). The success of Smollett's History may be explained by reference to his statement of intent in his prefatory Plan: his approach is factual, not theoretical or philosophical; he will eschew conjecture and national, religious, and political partiality; he will consult only the most legitimate of sources; and his style will make his material accessible. Inevitably there were dissonant voices, and Smollett was accused of being Jacobite and papist, most notably by Thomas Comber. Whig policy towards Scotland, and what he perceived as the corruption of Walpole's administration, had weakened his enthusiasm for the party to which his family was traditionally loyal. Surprised to hear of Glaswegian approval, he predicted the last volume will be severely censured by the west country whigs of Scotland, but he reiterated I have, as far as in me lay, adhered to Truth without espousing any faction (Letters, 65). In 1758 he took charge of the production of a Universal History and contributed the sections on France, Italy, and Germany. ' DNBWith frontispiece to volume I. Complete in four volumes. Condition: In cloth bindings. Externally sound, though with some wear to the spines and bumping to the corners. Slightly rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are quite clean, with just some marginal age-toning and some offsetting from the frontispiece to the title page. Some small closed tears to pages. Many pages unopened. Overall: GOOD..

Erste Ausgabe. The trial lasted two weeks and engaged some of the best lawyers and medical experts in the area. The case turned on whether Davis died from the blow or his medical treatment.         John Tyler Writes After Delivering his First State of the Union Address: "the Ultras on both sides are dissatisfied and the extremes meet."

Washington, D.C. 1841 - Autograph Letter Signed as President. Washington, D.C., December 9, 1841. 2 pp., 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 in., roughly torn, with lower quarter and at least three lines of text lacking, but signature intact on verso. Two days after "His Accidency" delivered his first State of the Union Address, John Tyler affirms that his position had infuriated the "Ultras": the radicals in both parties: states-rights-leaning Whig such as Clay, and more nationalistic Jacksonian Democrats. Transcript Washington, December 9, 1841Dear Sir; I enclose the copy of my message to Congress and hope that you will find nothing in it to change your favorable opinion of me. I have now thrown the responsibility of a plan which will be well digested and prepared, on the shoulders of Congress. Of its adaptation to the wants of the country I do not doubt, and I am highly gratified at the almost universal favor, so far as my information extends, with which the message has been received. The Ultras on both sides are dissatisfied and the extremes meet-this was to have been expected-but my relyance [sic] from the first has been and is upon the great masses--they are al.xxxx.their.xxxx write to me your wishes and views freely and be assured of my constant regard. John TylerHistorical BackgroundFollowing the Panic of 1837, fiscal policy was at the top of the government's agenda. When John Tyler assumed the presidency after the untimely death of William Henry Harrison after only a month in office, Whig leaders such as Henry Clay expected Tyler to work closely with them to follow Harrison's policies. At first Tyler played the role, but on pivotal issues he rebuked Whig advances. His reference to the "Ultras" refers to the Clay faction of the Whig party as well as the Democrats who. While there was room for compromises on issues of the protective tariff, Tyler twice vetoed acts to reestablish a national bank. Following the second veto in September, the bulk of his Cabinet, holdovers from Harrison's administration, resigned in protest. It is likely that Tyler is writing to his unknown recipient regarding the sections of his State of the Union that pertained to solidifying the nation's currency, as the speech referred to repeated jockeying with Congress over the issue of gold, silver, paper currency, and other Treasury notes. Tyler has indeed "thrown the responsibility of a plan .on the shoulders of Congress.""Nor will the plan be submitted in any overweening confidence in the sufficiency of my own judgment, but with much greater reliance on the wisdom and patriotism of Congress. I can not abandon this subject without urging upon you in the most emphatic manner, whatever may be your action on the suggestions which I have felt it to be my duty to submit, to relieve the Chief Executive Magistrate, by any and all constitutional means, from a controlling power over the public Treasury. If in the plan proposed, should you deem it worthy of your consideration, that separation is not as complete as you may desire, you will doubtless amend it in that particular. For myself, I disclaim all desire to have any control over the public moneys other than what is indispensably necessary to execute the laws which you may pass."John Tyler (1790-1862) was the first president to be elevated to office from the vice presidency upon the death of William Henry Harrison after only a month in office. His ascension led to the Constitutional question of whether he was actually president or still the vice president merely performing presidential duties. From his perspective, he had assumed to office and delivered an inaugural address. Dubbed "His Accidency" by critics, Tyler refused to fall under Henry Clay's influence and instead charted his own course as president, leading to vetoes, Cabinet resignations and an impeachment attempt.

It became a British institution, but after the 1940s, when its circulation peaked, it went into a long decline, finally closing in 1992.<br>It was subtitled The London Charivari in homage to Charles Philipon's earlier French satirical humour magazine Le Charivari..

JOURNAL OF A WHALING VOYAGE ABOARD THE METACOM OF NEW BEDFORD, 1842

Two 4to booklets, 40 pp. manuscript entries. The &#147;Metacom&#148; was a 300 ton whaleship. She departed New Bedford November 6, 1841 and returned from the Pacific September 20, 1845 with 2000 bbl sperm oil. This journal records only the early part of that voyage - from January 1 to May 25, 1842, but the entries are entertaining and informative. The anonymous journal keeper is a common sailor. He stands watches, takes his turn at the wheel, and interacts with his shipmates - &#147;had a spree with Murray gave him my fine knuckles in the mouth & repeated the mate came forward & sent him up aloft, rather inclined to think he had a cold berth of it.&#148; He records in detail catches and losses, notes the &#147;harsh treatment of the officers & the ill feeling toward them shown by the men.&#148; He records their difficult rounding of the Horn and their cruise into the Pacific, passing &#147;the island upon which Alex. Selkirk was cast away,&#148; another instance of the captain punching a crewman, and several of officers&#146; meanness or brutality. He draws views of St. Felix and St. Ambrose, a spliced jib boom, the &#147;Black Smith&#146;s Forge&#148; and several whales and ships. The steward gets very sick. Morale continues to deteriorate, despite success at whaling, so that when they put in at Paita - of which he draws a very nice view - &#147;three of us run away but were caught again.&#148; The next day, &#147;four ran away and has not since bin heard of since.&#148; It is possible that the writer was successful in a second try at deserting, because his entries end here. This journal is well written and handsomely illustrated, and is of note because it is illustrated and commented on in Norman Flayderman&#146;s classic, &#147;Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders.&#148; On page 100 Flayderman says, &#147;The sketches on the cover are identical with those found on many scrimshaw articles.&#148; Pages grubby but legible. Old sewing pulled away with no loss of pages.
