        Les Débardeurs.

Paris: Baugher & Co. [1841] - 66 numbered lithograph plates; some foxing. Orig. royal blue embossed paper boards, dark blue calf spine, elaborately dec. in gilt; rubbed at extremities with sm. chip to foot of spine. A complete collection of the series by the French caricaturist, second only to Daumier as the greatest social commentator and satirical artist of nineteenth century France. A draughtsman in his early career, and later a costume designer, Gavarni rose to prominence publishing his work in the Le Charivari, Le Figaro and L'Illustration. He also illustrated Balzac's novels, and Eugene Sue's Wandering Jew. Gavarni?s 'débardeurs' - meaning literally, those who unload goods from ships - are characters wearing fancy dress, especially women wearing trousers, something that was, at the time, acceptible only during the carnival. 'He could, through the accuracy of faces, the careful rendering of clothes, the precision of poses and bearing, unmistakenly express the age, quality, occupation, habits, manners and ridiculous ways of the characters he depicted. He made them speak a language stunning with original exactness, feeling and novelty' (Henri Beraldi). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Oliver Twist. 3rd edn. 3 vols.

Chapman & Hall. 1841 - Plates sl. spotted in places. Contemp. full tan calf, spines gilt in compartments, maroon morocco labels, single-ruled borders in gilt. Small monogram booklabels, WMC; bookseller?s ticket: Simms & Dinham, Manchester. A v.g. handsome copy. Dickens wrote a new xii-page introduction for this edition, in which he challenged those who accused him of portraying social deprivation in too fine a detail. ?I saw no reason, when I wrote this book, why the very dregs of life . should not serve the purpose of a moral, at least as well as its froth and cream. . But there are people of so refined and delicate a nature, that they cannot bear the contemplation of these horrors. . I have no desire to make proselytes among such people. I have no respect for their opinion . do not covet their approval; and do not write for their amusement. I venture to say this without reserve; for I am not aware of any writer in our language having a respect for himself, or held in any respect by his posterity, who ever has descended to the taste of this fastidious class.?         [GLOBE]. The earth

Published by J. G. Klinger in Nuremberg. Constructed, delineated and etched by J. A. Buhler. Nuremberg : J[ohann]. G[eorg]. Klinger, [between 1841 - 1852]. Wooden and plaster globe (6 inches in diameter), covered with 12 glazed and hand-coloured gores, fitted and spinning with metal polar axis in a circular card box, the lid provided in expert facsimile, the globe a little rubbed and with a few cracks but sound. A rare large format cased miniature globe, with the continents marked out in different colours together with all the main topographical and geographical features. Mount Erebus and Mount Terror are both marked on the Antarctic continent, as discovered on January 27, 1841 by polar explorer Sir James Clark Ross, who named them after his ships, Erebus and Terror. The globe was published by the Nuremberg cartographic firm founded by the engraver Johann Georg Klinger (1764-1806). The company continued until the early 1920s under various names, including Klinger Kunsthandlung, Klinger & Bauer, and after 1852 as C. Abel-Klinger Kunsthandlung, upon the firm's acquisition by Carl Abel. This English language example was one of a number of editions published by Klinger for use in schools.

Log of the ships ?Earl of Balcarras? and ?Helen? during the First Opium War

1841 - Manuscript in ink. 8vo. Original half-sheep over paper covered boards, occasional toning and slight foxing on the endpapers, with some wear and bumping to the covers and spine, very good. 128pp. At sea, 1840 - An excellent journal documenting life at sea during the First Opium War, 1839-42. Alexander Bayne initially served as the chief officer on the Earl of Balcarras, where he sailed from London to Canton, via Bombay, Singapore, Hong Kong and Manila. In July 1842, he was given command of the ship Helen and continued to operate in the Chinca His journal spans the voyage, departing London on September 25 1840, through to January 1843. As the first Opium War was fought over trade (among other things), Bayne provides a valuable first-hand account of tensions between the English and Chinese and how they manifest at sea. Specifically, Baynes writes from Whampoa: ?.moored ship at the new anchorage close by the 1st bar large ships not being able to pass over on account of the Chinese having sunk Junks with stones in them in order to block the passage up so as to make themselves secure from the infuriated Barbarians as they are graciously pleased to call us . during our stay here we remain in constant dread of the Chinese fearing that they might break their good faith with us but no such thing . however they had plenty of troops stationed round us to see that we did the same.? There are other notable events recorded here, the most dramatic of which being a typhoon in Hong Kong: ? one of the severest typhoons ever felt in China, the whole fleet of ships driving about in all directions, some without masts which had been cut away & others flying to the shore as if they were tired of the tempest & there lodging . on the rocks . next morning the sight was horrible dead bodies floating about in all directions & several noble ships on shore . had the typhoon lasted 20 minutes more we would have all been on shore.? Bayne also records meeting other ships, general maintenance and events on board, and the manuscript ends with nine pages of tables listing dates, latitude and longitude co-ordinates etc. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

First edition. Mackay's important early work of social psychology discusses popular delusions of all types and considers the credulous enthusiasm of mankind for phenomena such as alchemy, witchcraft, relics, the Crusades, urban myths, as well as economic events such as the tulip bubble, the Mississippi Bubble, and the South Sea Bubble. Still in print, Mackay's book has had a profound influence on economics and sociology, with many modern economists referring to his work when analysing the stock market bubbles of our own age. "Charles Mackay's passionate erudition and urbane, unaffected prose style contributed to make him one of the chief figures in the establishment of Victorian journalism as a dignified profession" (ODNB).

        Qu'est-ce que la propriété?

Paris: Librairie de Prévot,, 1841. Ou recherches sur le principe du droit et du gouvernement. Premier mémoire. Duodecimo (182 x 112 mm). Original buff wrappers printed in black, edges uncut. Later ownership stamp of "Alf. Mathey" to front wrappers. Wrappers professionally restored, contents bright with occasional light foxing, still a very good copy. Second edition of the French anarchist philosopher's notorious thesis which caused a scandal by equating all property with theft. In the wake of the social turmoil caused by the economic decline in France in 1839–40 and the July Monarchy's lapse into a "religion of property", Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809–1865) argued that—unlike freedom and equality—the right to property was not a natural right. Yet he also opposed collective ownership, "as he was persuaded that only a society without government is able to establish social harmony. The First International was, indeed, destroyed in the great fight between those who supported a libertarian socialism of the kind Proudhon had advocated and those who followed the authoritarian pattern, devised by Karl Marx. Kropotkin and Herzen were all his confessed disciples. Even Tolstoy sought him and borrowed the title and much of the theoretical background of his masterpiece War and Peace from Proudhon's book, La guerre et la paix … One can place Proudhon among the great socialist thinkers of the nineteenth century" (Simons, pp. 301–2). Proudhon himself referred to Qu'est-ce que la propriété? as a "diabolical work which frightens even me" (Correspondance I, p. 296), and he was called to defend himself against insurrection charges at his local court immediately after its publication. Qu'est-ce que la propriété? (1840) was followed in 1841 by his "Lettre à M. Blanqui sur la propriété. Deuxieme mémoire", and "Avertissement aux propriétaires, ou Lettre à M. Considérant sur une défense de la propriété" (often referred to as the "troisième mémoire").

Some of the early volumes lacking spines, chipping with loss to the original cloth bindings. Volumes bound in 6 month intervals, Jan-June; July-Dec. <br><br> Punch was a British magazine of humor and satire established in 1841. It quickly it rose to pre-eminence as a widely-read weekly that blended social commentary, with humor and wit. Punch appealed to reform-minded Victorian British middle-class sentiment, without espousing revolutionary spirit or radicalism. For example, the magazine's support for the repeal of the corn-laws and general support for the aims of the Chartists. The magazine was thickly populated by the political cartoons of John Tenniel and other artists. Punch's satirized the evolving political situation of 19th century Europe and relayed moderate British sentiments on the dangers of Prussian autocracy, performance in the Crimean War, Italian nationalism (Garibaldi), colonial affairs, etc. Of particular interest to American readers is Punch's commentary and cartoons of United States policy during the civil war. Punch shows a decidedly negative view of U.S. international assertiveness in their naval blockade and threats to Canada. Additionally, the emancipation proclamation, the role of blacks, and President Lincoln's policies are caricatured in its pages. <br> This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

Reports from the Select Committee on South Australia; together with the Minutes of Evidence, Appendix, and Index. [Comprising the] First Report ... 9th March 1841 [and the] Second Report ... 10th March 1841

London, 'Communicated by the Commons to the Lords', and 'Ordered to be printed 21st June 1841'. Foolscap folio, [ii], 8 (last page blank) pages [First Report] and xl, 272, x, 358 (appendix), 58 (index) pages plus 4 large folding hand-coloured maps (including 3 by John Arrowsmith - see below) [Second Report]. Relatively modern half calf and cloth (by Morrell of London), retaining both front and rear original printed blue wrappers; leather very slightly rubbed at the extremities, with a light tidemark to the foot of the spine; front wrapper very slightly marked; minor offsetting to the maps, with an expert repair to a very short tear near the stub of the last one; essentially a fine uncut copy - it is difficult to imagine a better one turning up. Great Britain and Ireland Parliamentary Paper 174 of 1841 (the House of Lords issue, Ferguson 3221 [with minor pagination errors] - see also Ferguson 3218 and 3219). 'This Report contains very complete information regarding the Colony from its foundation [in 1836] to 1841' (Ferguson 3219, referring to the Second Report). Wakefield's self-supporting system of colonization, administered by the South Australian Colonization Commission, failed and the commission was dissolved in January 1840. 'The new board of three salaried commissioners slowly became aware that the colony's funds in London were rapidly dwindling. After months of inexcusable procrastination they had no choice but to throw the colony on the mercies of the Colonial Office. Nevertheless the blame of their own shortcomings and extravagance was placed squarely on [Governor] Gawler for his irregularities, "reckless" expenditure and alleged grave errors of judgment.' The imperial parliament accepted the select committee's recommendations and took control of the colony's affairs. Although the select committee had refused to condemn Gawler and reported that 'even his severest critics had suggested no way in which Gawler's expenditure might have been significantly reduced', he was abandoned as the scapegoat and after his recall in May 1841, he was never again to find public employment (Australian Dictionary of Biography). The maps are (1) Plan of the District of Adelaide, shewing the application of the Running Survey to that locality (Water Sections coloured) (approximately 500 x 600 mm) and (2) The District of Adelaide, South Australia; As divided into Country Sections. From the Trigonometrical Surveys of Colonel Light ... (500 x 600 mm); (3) The Maritime Portion of South Australia, from Capn. Flinders and the more recent Surveys made by the Survr. Genl. of the Colonies (620 x 500 mm) and (4) Map shewing the Special Survey in South Australia, to the Eastward of the Gulf of St Vincent (515 x 600 mm). From the notable collection of Rodney Davidson, with his bookplate on the front pastedown.

Beitrag zur Untersuchung des äusseren Gehörganges. Mitgetheilt vom Hofmed. Dr. Hoffmann in Burg Steinfurt (pp.10-14, 1 lith. Taf. mit 5 Abb.)

Wschr. ges. Heilk., 1841/ 1. - Berlin, bei August Hirschwald, den 2ten Januar 1841, 8, 16 pp., 1 lith. Taf., feine Broschur. The Invention of the modern otoscope - nighteen years before Tröltsch (GM 3374)! -cf.
