Samuel Bealey Harrison 1841 cover letter about Townships corrections to be included in the proposed District of Huron

Kingston: Samuel Harrison, 1841. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. A complete letter, 13" x 8", folded to 6 1/4" x 3 1/4", dated Nov 11 1841 signed SB Harrison. Samuel Bealy Harrison (Canada's most powerful parliamentarian during 1841-2 and Canada's first Premier (Prime Minister). This manuscript cover letter written by Harrison is from his Provincial Secretary's office in Kingston to Daniel Lizars Esq. of Goderich. It's content are about the Proclamation constituting the new Townships and the insertion of Bosanguet is clearly an error that the Township forming part of the Western DIstrict (of Huron). As well comments on the Ashfield and the range of townships to the northward being included in the Proclamation when the act so explicitly constitutes them a portion of the District. He goes on to say he will talk to the Attorney General to get these issues mentioned corrected.Samuel Bealey Harrison was a lawyer, miller, reformer politician, and a judge of the County of York. He was Joint Premier of the Province of Canada for Canada East from 1841 to 1842 with William Henry Draper PM for Canada West. Draper was a member of the Family Compact and Harrison was a moderate Reformer, the predecessor of the Liberal Party of Canada. In February 1842 he was named one of three directors of the Welland Canal which had been taken over by the government. He also served in the Senate for the University of Toronto. "One significance of The Act of Union in 1841 was that it precipitated passing of the District Councils Act (1841) in Upper Canada, introduced by Samuel Bealey HARRISON, Governor Lord Sydenham's most trusted minister, which even Robert Baldwin, considered the "father of Ont's municipal govt system, admitted was an improvement over his and his father's." "Union of the Canadas: 1841-1958" by JMSCareless, 1967"Despite his long judicial tenure, Harrison's brief political career is more significant. Although he kept his position through changing ministries under Sydenham, Bagot, and Metcalfe, his abrupt and voluntary departures first from the Executive Council and then from politics make it clear he was no placeman. The key to his policy would seem to be that though he believed progress towards responsible government both good and inevitable, he understood it could be severely set back by a premature clash with the Colonial Office. If gradual constitutional advance was his aim, he contributed significantly to its achievement. His part in introducing the resolutions of 1841 and in sponsoring the entry into government of Baldwin and La Fontaine in 1842 certainly forwarded responsible government; his role in partially out manoeuvring Baldwin on both these occasions and in contributing to the latter's defeat in the election of 1844 did much to avert a confrontation with the imperial government until, by 1847, the Colonial Office itself was willing to accept the concept of internal self-government for the Canadas."DCB on-line.

        5 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Gießen, München u. Wildbad Gastein, 1841-1864.. Zus. 10 S., 8° u. 4°.. Inhaltsreiche Briefe an den österr. Chemiker u.

A Residence of Eleven Years in New Holland and the Caroline Islands... A Residence of Eleven Years in New Holland and the Caroline Islands: being the Adventures of James O'Connell. Edited from his verbal narration

Boston: B.B. Mussey, 1841. Duodecimo; contemporary full sheep, rebacked. Oxley, Parramatta and life with the Aborigines. Second edition of this important account. A homeless London waif, O'Connell, aged about eleven, sailed for Port Jackson as a cabin-boy (or perhaps as a prisoner) on board a convict ship. During some years' residence in New Holland, he 'accompanied Oxley on a six months' exploring expedition. Thus he became acquainted with the condition of the colony, the discipline of the convicts and the character of the Aborigines...' (Ferguson). With an important chapter printing his own thoughts on the differences between "northern and southern" tribes. In about 1826 O'Connell joined the whaler John Bull which having first stopped off in New Zealand made for the Caroline Islands with the view of moving on to the Sea of Japan. With the Captain drunk on deck, the ship was wrecked on a reef, and whilst the entire crew managed to escape in the boats, few survived the following three days and four nights afloat. Taken in by the natives, O'Connell and his shipmate George Keenan remained for five years, during which time the author married, fathered five children and was tattooed. His description is 'the first extensive ethnographic account of the island of Ponape' (Day). A five-page appendix gives a vocabulary of the language of the Caroline Islands.Taken off the island by the American schooner Spy, O'Connell and Keenan were imprisoned in Manila under suspicion of being either pirates or escaped convicts. With no evidence against them they were eventually discharged and sent to Macao and then Canton, from where they travelled to Peking to join a caravan for Constantinople. On reaching the Imperial city the travellers abandoned their plans and made for Canton overland and took ship for Halifax, Nova Scotia. O'Connell alone finally made New York in the autumn of 1835 and became the first tattooed man exhibited in the United States, returning to his circus roots.Copies of this Boston-published second edition are recorded with a pair of plates, but this unillustrated version appears to be the more common issue.

A Popular Treatise on the Art of Photography, Including Daguerreotype, and all the New Methods of Producing Pictures by the Chemical Agency of Light

Glasgow: Richard Griffin and Co, 1841. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo, pp. viii, 96, with lithographic frontispiece showing an image in positive and negative, and 29 illustrations in the text. Bound in later plain paper wrappers and housed in a clamshell box. Some chipping to the edges, staining (probably photographic chemicals) to the title page and Introduction only. Overall about very good. Hunt (1807-1887) was a chemist who played a prominent role in the early decades of photography in Britain. This volume, which incorporated much of his own research as well as a survey of important contributions to the field, is generally regarded as "the first book on photography in English" and was, according to Hannavy, "the most comprehensive account of photography photographic process published to that date." A rare and seminal work.

Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 4 pages 8vo (the last a little soiled), Tapton House, 25 June 1841.

      - Agreeing to lecture to a Mechanics' Institution, and suggesting that the Insitution should be supplied with models to illustrate the mechanical powers and the various steam engines. '. I think however it will be more clear to the young Mechanics if I get models made of all the mechanical powers to lecture on, the models will continue to be useful to all new members. I think by and Bye you ought to have skeleton models of the condensing Engine, High Pressure Engine, Locomotive Engine & Steam boat Engine. These models ought to be made in sections to show the interior working part of the different Engines. .'Stephenson was an enthusiastic supporter of the various Mechanics' Institutes which had grown up in the northern counties. As early as 1824 he had presided at a public meeting for the purpose of establishing an Institute in Newcastle, and he became himself a very popular lecturer. Samuel Smiles (Lives of the Engineers, 1861, vol. 3. page 362) describes the effect:'On more than one occasion, the author [Smiles] had the pleasure of listening to George Stephenson's homely but forcible addresses at the annual soirées of the Leeds Mechanics' Institute. He was always an immense favourite with his audiences there. His personal appearance was greatly in his favour. A handsome, ruddy, expressive face, lit up by bright dark-blue eyes, prepared one for his earnest words when he stood up to speak and the cheers had subsided which invariably hailed his rising. He was not glib, but he was very impressive. .'
