John Alston
Glasgow: Smith & Elder & Co, 1839. Front and back cover scratched and damaged although still in good shape. Foxing too. Please feel free to make an offer. All offers will be considered. This book was made a specimen (there is no other copy) of John Alstons' improved method of writing for the blind. This book is the first edition of Braille in plain English by John Alston and is accompanied by a letter, in Braille, from John Alston. This book was publisher in 1839 and is, I believe, to be the only one every made. Braille was originally invented in france by Louis Braille but John Alston invented the british version later on. About the book The Westminster Shorter Catechism is a catechism written in 1646 and 1647 by the Westminster Assembly, a synod of English and Scottish theologians and laymen intended to bring the Church of England into greater conformity with the Church of Scotland. The assembly also produced the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Larger Catechism. A version without Scripture citations was completed on 25 November 1647 and presented to the Long Parliament, and Scripture citations were added on 14 April 1649. Catechesis is a practice of teaching the Christian faith. New converts to Christianity were taught through lectures during the first four centuries of the Church's existence, but this practice was largely abandoned with the rise of Christendom. Christian humanists and Protestant Reformers sought to revive the practice, including the Reformed. John Calvin's Genevan Catechism was especially influential among the British Reformed. MONTGOMERY, G. W. [George Washington]
Wiley and Putnam, 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 195pp. A good or better copy in the publisher's green blind-stamped cloth. Boards somehwat worn and faintly soiled. Internally clean with a few scant markings to the endpapers (no library markings). Some present but mild dampstains to the page block. The author was the son of John Montgomery, an Irish-born Boston merchant, who had relocated to Spain. The younger Montgomery was educated in England, and worked as a diplomat for the United States. Uncommonly worldly for his time, this tome recounts the author's travels through Guatemala during the period immediately following the establishment of hte Monroe Doctrine. While known to libraries, this is a scarce volume in the trade, having last appeared at auction in 1997, and selling well over the high estimate. Sabin 50139. Good +. [Attributes: First Edition]

Charles Dickens
1839. For sale is a particularly rare Dickens publication, in the form of Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress. Published by A. and W. Galignani & Co., Paris, 1839. Complete. 8vo. It was long thought that the 1846 Bradbury and Evans Edition of this title was the first in one-volume, so this scarce edition merits bibliographical note, for it appeared seven-years hence. It is not mentioned in Eckel or Gimbel, presumably the reason being neither had located a copy themselves. Bound in contemporaneous green calf, over marbled boards. The spine finely decorated in gilt. Original marbled endpapers. All page edges untrimmed. Externally it remains in pleasing order; the calf only predictably rubbed, but this is commensurate with age. The hinges remain very firm. Internally, save the odd sporadic spot, it remains delightfully clean throughout. Overall, this volume will add greatly to any serious Dickens collection; not a title often seen on the open market, this is indeed an opportunity not to be missed. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Dickens, Charles. 1812 - 1870]. By "Boz".
Paris: Published by A. and W. Galignani & Co., 1839. 1st edition thus. [4], 367, [1 (blank)] pp. Untrimmed. 8vo. 8-7/8" x 5-3/8". Period brown quarter-leather with marbled boards. Gilt spine lettering. General binding wear & rubs to boards. Foxing. Small, neat pos to ffep upper corner. A VG copy. Item #12964.1 For many years, it was thought the 1846 Bradbury & Evans edition was the first 'octavo' edition (cf. Eckel, p. 62). This Galignanai edition obviously deserves consideration for that appellation, though it's scarcity undoubtedly contributed to the 1846's notation as such in the Dickens' literature. Not in Eckel, Gimbel, or VanderPoel. [Attributes: First Edition]

1839. For sale is a VERY rare First Edition of Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1839. A complete suite of plates by Phiz. 624p.p. Bound in a scarce and fine publisher's primary vertically-ribbed blue cloth, blind-stamped panels to the boards. The title, author's name and publication date name in gilt to the spine, with Charles abbreviated to 'Chas'. Externally the spine and boards are largely sound, with only occasional extraneous wear, commensurate with age, in places. A professional repair to the head and both hinges of the spine. Internally it is refreshingly very clean, and and one of the brightest examples we have handled to the textblock. The plates have the predictable marginal toning and browning in places. Overall, to find an example of this title is indeed rare, particularly bound in such a rare ORIGINAL publisher's binding. One of the best-loved works of the C19th, this fine and scarce example would grace any collection, and it comes highly recommended. Russell & Reeves, DeBuque, 1839. [2],597,[1]pp. Hardcover in blue paper-wrapped boards and leather spine with gilt labels. This law book is essentially the first legal code for Iowa and the Nebraska, Dakota, and Montana territories. Issued as the first collected Iowa laws, it became famous as "Old Blue Book," which was adopted to serve for many years as the law of all the country west of the Missouri to the Rocky Mountains between the 42nd and 45th parallels. This prints the Northwest Ordinance, the act to establish the territorial government of Iowa, and other resolutions and acts of the Territory. This was the second book printed in Iowa Territory, preceded only by a volume of the Wisconsin legislature, printed in Burlington in 1838, when that legislature was forced to temporarily relocate. A seminal frontier American law book. SABIN 35020. FITZPATRICK, IOWA TERRITORIAL DOCUMENTS, p.19. LC, IOWA CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION 122 SCARCE. Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. [Attributes: First Edition]

CUSTINE La Russie en 1839. Paris, Amyot, 1843, complet en 4 volumes in-8, 2ff.-XXXIpp.-354pp. - 2ff.-416pp. - 2ff.-470pp.

Jahrhundert keine Ehre. Eine Gesetzgebung, welche die Menschen gewöhn … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]
