WORLD WALL MAP: MAPPAMONDO COSTRUTTO SU QUELLO DI GARDNER, ACCRESCIUTO DI TUTTE LE NUOVE SCOPERTE E DEDICATO A S. M. FERDINANDO II RE DEL REGNO DELLE DUE SICILIE, DALL’UMILISSIMO E FEDELISSIMO SUDDITO RAFFAELE MANCINI INGEGNERE DEL REALE OFFICIO.

Naples: [Reale Officio Topografico], [but sheets issued serially 1837-39]. 1838 - Wall Map of the World in 2 Hemispheres: copper engraving printed on 8 large joined sheets, with modern hand colour, engraved pastedown title (Very Good, strong engraving impression), diameter of each hemisphere: 124 cm (49 inches); total measurements: 137 x 246 cm (54 x 97 inches). A colossal and exquisitely engraved map of the World, measuring almost 1.4 x 2.5 metres!, granting a panoptic view of the globe as it appeared during the 1830s, published in Naples for the court of King Ferdinando II of the Two Sicilies, by Raffaele Mancini, the official state engineer – 1 of only 3 known examples. - This colossal, arresting production is a double-hemisphere map of the World produced for the court of King Ferdinando II of the Two Sicilies, constructed by the state engineer Raffaele Mancini and printed in Naples. It grants a panoptic view of the globe as it appeared during the 1830s, a time of great transition and development, particularly in the Americas, Africa and Oceania. A sumptuous, expensive production, it was issued in only a very small print run, and is today exceptionally rare, this being 1 of only 3 known surviving examples. In creating the present map, Mancini employed James Gardner’s 1825 World map as a model, although, importantly he updates the map with more recent details. Gardner drew his cartographic sources from Aaron Arrowsmith's 1814 World Map on a Globular Projection featuring 36-inch hemispheres; as well as maps by James Wyld the Elder, amongst other works. Mancini’s production is done to the same gargantuan scale as Gardner’s map, which is regarded as perhaps "one of the largest World Maps produced in the early 1800’s". Please see a link to the Garner map in the David Rumsey Map Collection. Mancini’s World Map and the Last Gasp of Royal Court Patronage in Italy - Mancini’s gargantuan World Map represents one of the last great examples of Italian royal court patronage of cartography in Italy, which for centuries had maintained a tradition responsible for many of the world’s finest and most historically important maps and globes. The production of the present map would have been very expensive and labour intensive, and would certainly have been funded as a special commission for the court of Ferdinando II. Mancini would have been seconded form his normal duties as a state . SEE OUR WEB PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION

G. Zacheroni

Leopoldo Mossy e Giuseppe Molini, 1838. Bellissimi capilettera litografici; testatine e finalini ornati posti all'incipit e a conclusione di ogni canto. Ex-libris Edward Craven Hawtrey (1789-1862). Newton's New & Improved Terrestrial Globe [and] Newton's Improved Pocket Celestial Globe

1838-41., London, 1838 - The world in your pocket Globe, 12 hand-coloured engraved paper gores, over a papier mâché and plaster sphere, housed within original shagreen over paste-board clamshell case, lined with two sets of 12 hand-coloured engraved celestial gores, varnished, with hooks and eyes. Dimensions: 70mm (2.75 inches). Biography John Newton (1759-1844) was trained by Thomas Bateman (fl1754-81), who had previously been apprenticed to Nathaniel Hill. Newton's first globe was a revised edition of Hill's 1754 pocket globe, which he published in 1783 in association with William Palmer. The partnership dissolved shortly after, and Newton continued to publish the pocket globe under his own name. John's second son William Newton (1786-1861) joined the firm between 1814-1816, which traded under the name J. & W. Newton. In the same year the firm produced a new series of globes, including a new pocket globe. By the 1830s the firm was also active as a patent agent, and was joined by Miles Berry, a civil engineer and patent agent, after which the firm was known as Newton, Berry & Son. In 1842, William's eldest son, William Edward Newton (1818-1879), joined the business, followed by his brother Alfred Vincent Newton (1821-1900). The firm became known as W. Newton & Son, or once again, on the death of William, as simply Newton & Son from 1861 until about 1883. Perhaps the greatest triumph for the Newton family was the Great Exhibition of 1851, where, aside from the globes they exhibited from 1 to 25 inches in diameter, they were awarded a prize medal for a manuscript terrestrial globe of six feet in diameter. Geography In North America, Alaska is marked "Russian Territory", denoting the success of the Russian-American Company's colony, which was set up in 1799, to hunt sea otters for their fur. To the west of Alaska the Bering Straits are now named. The results of the multiple voyages of the British explorer William Parry in the Arctic throughout the 1820s are shown. He explored throughout the area and wintered on the ice on two separate occasions, avoiding scurvy among his crew by growing mustard and cress in his cabin. In 1827 Parry broke the record for the furthest exploration north - a higher latitude would not be reached for 49 years. The tentative coastlines shown were named by him "North Georgia" and "Melville Land" for George III and Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville and First Lord of the Admiralty. Interestingly, in Australia, Newton has named the continent both "New Holland" and "Australia". New South Wales and Sydney are marked. Geographical features include the Swan River, the Gulf of St. Vincent as named by Matthew Flinders, and Halifax Bay. Further south in the Antarctic Circle are Alexander Island "Alexander 1st I." and Peter 1st Island "Peter 1st I.". The islands were discovered in 1821 by a Russian expedition under Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, who named them for the reigning Tsar of Russia and Peter the Greatw. Von Bellinghausen was the second person to circumnavigate Antarctica, disproving James Cook's theory that there was no land at the south pole, and the first Russian to circumnavigate the world. Astronomy The celestial gores show the constellations in pictorial form. Those include all 48 Ptolemaic constellations, all 12 of Plancius' southern constellations, all those of Hevelius, except "Mons Maenalus" and all the Enlightenment constellations of Lacaille, except "Reticulum". The stars are marked with their Bayer notations.

History of the Indian Tribes of North America With biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs

Philadelphia: Greenough [and] Rice & Clark, 1838 A handsome set, with original wrappers, of this landmark of American publishing history, "one of the most costly and important ever published on the American Indians" (Field). In 1816 James Madison named Thomas McKenney superintendent of Indian trade, and in 1824 he became the first head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. For years he worked tirelessly to promote Indian-American relations, championing the cause of the Indians and seeking to preserve a record of their vanishing cultures. His collaborator was Illinois jurist and author James Hall. In 1821 James Monroe invited 17 Indian leaders to Washington, in order to demonstrate the wealth and power of the United States and thereby promote peace. At McKenney's order, leading artists including Charles Bird King painted portraits of these men, and over the coming decade they executed scores of portraits of members of more than twenty American Indian tribes visiting Washington on official business. These portraits formed the heart of the government's National Indian Portrait Gallery, first housed at the War Department and later transferred to the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian fire of 1865 destroyed all but the handful of paintings now at the White House. As a result, these volumes form our only records of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the century. In 1830 McKenney, having been dismissed by Andrew Jackson, began to plan for the publication of the paintings and a series of biographies, often based on McKenney's own interviews with the subjects. The magnitude of the project was overwhelming. The work's great cost and complexity required that it be brought out over time, and several printers and lithographers took part in the project until its completion by Rice and Clark in 1844. Smaller format editions appeared in later years to make the set accessible to a wider audience. The title-pages are in the following BAL states: Vol. I state C, Vol. II state A, Vol. III state A. Over the past 150 years, the folio editions of McKenney and Hall have naturally attracted considerable attention and handling from collectors, lovers of history and ethnology, and print dealers. As a result, most sets have been badly damaged, rebound, and heavily restored, and copies of this work typically evidence heavy reading and thumbing. It is unusual to encounter so many of the parts in original wrappers and with the plates brilliantly colored. Three volumes. Folio. 120 hand-colored lithographs. Volume 1 in contemporary half red morocco; volumes 2 and 3 in original parts in wrappers, 3 plates supplied from another copy. Some wear including chipping and closed tears. Foxing. Wrappers restored, a few in facsimile. A handsome, fresh set with brilliant, vivid hand-coloring, with most parts in original wrappers. Half morocco cases.

Senator Thomas Hart Benton Handwritten Letter (ALS) January 13, 1838 (RE: New Orleans Trial)

Kansas City, MO: Original Letter, 1838. Original Letter. Single Sheet. Very Good. 7 3/4 X 9 3/4. Senator Thomas Hart Benton autograph letter signed (ALS) in original free frank envelope. The cover of letter signed and marked "FREE" by Benton as well. Letter addressed to a Mr. Henry of New Orleans in relation to a court case he was apparently engaged in. In full: "Jany. 13, 1838 - Dear Sir, The court decided the motion for dismission this day, and overturned it, so that we shall now have a hearing, and those to gain the case for Mr. Wilcox upon the merits and to relieve him from the suit. Yours truly, Thomas H. Benton." Benton, a native Tennessean and one-time dueling opponent of Andrew Jackson, whom he shot and wounded in the duel, was a career politician and staunch supporter of "manifest destiny" and "hard money." His belief that the country needed to use hard money and not a set of standards based upon a theoretical "backing" of currency earned him the nickname "Old Bullion." Benton was one of the eight Senators profiled by John F. Kennedy in his book, "Profiles in Courage." Letter is folded with remnants of original black wax seal intact on verso. Slight paper separation at folds. Light foxing.

Vospominaniya o Persii, 1834-1835 [Reminiscences of Persia].

St. Petersburg: Guttenberg,, 1838. Octavo. Original pale blue printed wraps. Wraps rubbed, soiled and chipped, now restored at the spine, and small piece missing from the front panel in-filled, small ink-stamp removed from the title page, pale toning throughout, but overall very good. First and only edition, uncommon just 6 locations world-wide. This copy with the author's presentation inscription in ink to the front panel of the wraps; "To the Russian Academy, presented by the Author, 17 Nov. 1838". The book was never translated or republished in Russia. The author, Russian writer and journalist Fyodor Korf (1803-1853), describes his service as Second Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Tehran in 1834-5, under count Ivan Simonich (1794-1851) Russian plenipotentiary in Persia 1832-38. Korf went to Tabriz (north-western Iran), the residence of Mohammad Mirza Qajar (1808-48), at the time heir to the throne, travelling via Georgiyevsk (in modern-day Stavropol Krai in the North Caucasus), Yekaterinodar (Krasnodar), Vladikavkaz, Tiflis (Tbilisi), Erevan, and Nakhchivan. When Mohammad ascended to the throne as shah, Korf followed him to Teheran, after 6 months returning to Russia via Tabriz. Overall Korf was not impressed by the country; "When I crossed the Persian border, nobody asked me for my passport, nobody cared who I was, where I came from or went and why, that is not fashionable here. I have to confess that this first, disorderly impression, when I got to know Persia, was not very favourable for the country. Disorder! Can there be anything worse than disorder?" (p.78). The book contains telling anecdotes of court life including an account of Korf's official audience with the shah, together with tales of his grandfather and predecessor Fathali Shah Qajar (1772-1834), his father, crown prince of Persia Abbas Mirza (1789-1833), and of Sir John Campbell (1799-1870) British Envoy to Persia in 1830-5. Korf also recounts the details of court machinations attending the succession, the unsuccessful coup d'état by Ali Mirza Qajar, Fathali's son, and of the removal and execution of Mirza Abu'lg-Qasem Qa'em-Maqam Farahani, the prime minister, on the shah's direct orders in 1835. There are topographical notes on Tabriz and environs, Quazvin, Tiflis, Yerevan, and much on the sights of Teheran - the shah's palace, city bazaars, canals, caravanserais, the ruins of the house of Alexander Griboyedov, Russian ambassador to Persia who was murdered by the mob in Teheran in 1829 following the ratification of the punitive Treaty of Turkmenchay, concluding the Russo-Persian War of 1826-8 - together with observations on Russo-Persian trade, the Persian army, native medicine, the celebration of public holidays - Nowruz, Kurban Bayrami, Mourning of Muharram - and the epidemic of plague and cholera in Teheran and Tebriz. A fascinating eyewitness account, by an acute observer, of the state Persia as it opened to outside influences.

Shows the Straits of Magellan and neighboring sounds, canals, etc. in remarkable detail, including place names, soundings and sailing directions. One of the most detailed and accurate charts of the region published in the early/mid-19th Century. Published by the Depot de la Marine in 1838, based on surveys of 1826-1834. These type of charts are scarse as they were actually used at sea for navigation. Engraving on laid paper. Made by 'Chassant' after 'Phillip Parker King and Robert Fitz Roy for the Depot de la Marine'. Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine (1720 - present), often called the Depot de Marine, was a French hydrographic mapping organization founded in 1720. Much like the U.S. Coast Survey, the British Admiralty, and the Spanish Deposito Hydrografico, the Depot was initiated as a storehouse and distribution center of existing nautical and marine charts. Eventually the Depot initiated its on mapping activities in an attempt to improve and expand upon existing material. Some of the well known hydrograhers / cartographers in the development of Depot were Jacques Nicholas Bellin and Rigobert Bonne. Good, given age. The sheet overall a little browned and spotted. Some stains in the left and lower right margins. Some small tears and nicks in the margins (partly restored). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. The Koran.

London: for Thomas Tegg and Son,, 1838. Commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed. Translated from the Original Arabic: with Explanatory Notes, taken from the most Approved Commentators: to which is prefixed, a Preliminary Discourse. By George Sale. Octavo (214 x 132 mm). Contemporary tan calf, spine gilt in compartments, red and black morocco labels, gilt frame to covers, edges dyed yellow with red sprinkling, marbled endpapers. Folding frontispiece with engraved plan and view of Mecca, 3 genealogical tables of which 2 folding, folding map of Arabia. Extremities rubbed, light craquelure to covers, mild finger-soiling to front, occasional light spotting. A very good copy. Later London edition of Sale's Qur'an, the first English translation of the Qur'an to be made directly from the Arabic on first publication in 1734, and the basis for all subsequent English editions until the mid-nineteenth century; previously the only complete English translation had been Alexander Ross's 1649 version, which relied solely on the 1647 French edition by Alexandre du Ryer. George Sale (1697-1734), a solicitor, was "the first notable English Arabist who was not in holy orders … From 1726 to 1734 he was closely associated with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, which he served in his legal capacity. Meanwhile he was working on a translation of the Qur'an … a landmark in the history of Qur'anic studies" (Holt, Studies in the History of the Near East, p. 58). Sale was textually indebted to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI, and his citation of Muslim commentators is restricted to those already mentioned by his predecessor. Yet Sale's work, and in particular his extensive Preliminary Discourse discussing both the biography of the Prophet and the Arabian context of Islam, displays "an enlightened and objective attitude which may have been responsible for his gradual dissociation from the activities of the SPCK", in contrast to the openly polemical intentions of Marracci, whose prefaced offered a lengthy refutation of the Qur'an and Muhammad's prophethood (ibid.) Sale's balanced presentation of Muhammad and Islamic origins was much admired by his contemporaries, including Voltaire, Lessing and especially Gibbon, whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had still not been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978).
