Hickes was a bishop of the nonjuring Church of England in Scotland. A work on propaganda commissioned by his superior in Scotland, John Maitland, Duke of Lauderdale, Ravillac Redivivus, first published in 1678, is an account of the trial of the Scots-nationalist Presbyterian (covenanter) James Mitchell [d.1678] for an attempt to assassinate James Sharpe, the archbishop of St Andrews. Hickes linked Mitchell's story to that of the notorious covenanter Major Thomas Weir [c. 1600-1670], a suspected sorcerer who was executed for bestiality and incest in 1670, in order to demonstrate that fanatical dissenters violated the boundaries of moral law and were capable of committing the most outrageous crimes in the name of religion. A note at the foot of the title page, which identifies the author, reads: "The author calls himself a Scots Addvocate: (p. 46). I rather think him an English Man, probably Dr. Hicks, at that time Chaplane to the Duke of Lauderdale." English Short-Title Catalogue R19059.

China; its state and prospects, with especial reference to the spread of the Gospel; containing allusions to the antiquity, extent, population, civilization, literature, and religion of the Chinese

New York: Crocker & Brewster, 1838. First American edition, small 8vo, pp. xv, [1], [13]-472; folding frontispiece map, 6 wood-engravings by G. Baxter on 3 plates; a fine, bright copy in original brown cloth, gilt-lettered spine. A stunning copy. Walter Henry Medhurst (1796-1857) was an English missionary who served an apprenticeship in the printing trade before joining the Missionary Society. He was sent to Malacca in 1817 where he spent almost 20 years doing Protestant missionary work in what is now Indonesia. It was in Batavia (Jakarta) that he printed on his lithographic press the first English-Japanese dictionary in 1830. After the Opium War he moved to Shanghai in order to assist in a translation of the New Testament into Chinese, and remained in China until his return to England in 1856. Medhurst's long career in the Far East made him familiar not only with Malay and Chinese, but also with Japanese, and he is not only one of the most reliable, but also one of the most informed of the Western sinologists. He also went on to publish a Chinese dictionary and conversation book.

Finely engraved admission ticket to the coronation of Queen Victoria.

London: 1838 - Oblong octavo (162 x 225 mm). Red paper, embossed stamp of The Earl Marshal of England. Numbered by hand "364". Two vertical folds, remains of paste at top edge of verso (where removed from an album). In excellent condition. Rare admission ticket to Victoria's coronation on 28 June 1838, issued to Lady Aylmer (1775-1862, née Louisa Anne Call), who married Matthew Whitworth-Aylmer, 5th baron Aylmer, in 1801; he later became Governor General of British North America and Lieutenant Governor of Lower Canada (1830). "He and Lady Aylmer took their vice-regal responsibilities seriously, contributing generously to a variety of causes, such as an emigrant fund, the Female Orphan Asylum, and the Quebec Driving Club (one of a number of organizations of which Lady Aylmer became patroness). They sought to foster the arts and culture, and attended many community activities, from ploughing matches to annual races in Trois-Rivières where Aylmer donated a silver cup to be awarded for a horse bred within the province" (Dictionary of Canadian Biography). However, after the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837-38, Aylmer was dismissed and the couple sailed for England: "Aylmer's mood was not improved by a terrifying return voyage" (ibid), described by Lady Aylmer in Narrative of the passage of the 'Pique' across the Atlantic (1837)- one of the earliest book dedicated to the newly ascended Victoria.

        Critick of Pure Reason

1838. First Edition . KANT, Immanuel. Critick of Pure Reason. Translated from the Original of Immanuel Kant. London: William Pickering, 1838. Octavo, period-style full green morocco with elaborately gilt-decorated spine and boards, raised bands, marbled endpapers. $4700.First edition in English of KantÂ’s major work, representing the “full maturity” of his philosophical thought. The first of his three Critiques, Kant's Critick of Pure Reason (first published in German in 1781), represents the ""full maturity"" of his philosophical thought. It treats the problem of ""how it is possible for the individual thinking subject to connect together the parts of his experience in the form we call cognitionÂ… The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of 'pure reason'; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame"" (PMM 226).
