A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD; INCLUDING AN EMBASSY TO MUSCAT AND SIAM IN 1835, 1836 AND 1837

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1838. First edition. 8vo, later brown imitation leather; spine with five raised bands; black leather lettering piece, gilt. 559, (1) pages, plus advertising leaves. Some foxing and browning, as generally seen in this title; very good. Quoted extensively in Q. David Bowers's The Rare Silver Dollars Dated 1804 and the Exciting Adventures of Edmund Roberts. Ruschenberger was a U.S. Navy surgeon who accompanied the USS Peacock, under the command of C.K. Stribling, on "an Embassy from the Government of the United States to the courts of Muscat, Siam, and Cochin-China, in the years 1835, 1836, and 1837 [embracing] Zanzibar, Arabia, Hindoostan, Ceylon, Java, Siam, Cochin-China, China, the Bonin Islands, the Sandwich Islands, the Californias, Mexico, &c." Of numismatic importance due to the presentation of sets of United States coins by diplomat Edmund Roberts to Said bin Sultan al-Said, Sultan of Muscat and Oman, and King Rama III of Siam. The facts behind these presentations were largely forgotten until the Siam set surfaced in 1962 at the ANA Convention. The distribution of these sets are mentioned in Ruschenberger's book, though he does not mention the odd presence of 1804-dated coins among the 1834-dated pieces constituting most of the set. On page 91, he writes, "It is a universal custom, amongst the nations of Asia, to make gifts to each other on all occasions of friendly intercourse; and, in negotiating treaties, the nature and value of the presents is always a point of grave consideration between the contracting agents. In conformity with this usage, a variety of articles was presented to the Sultan by the United States, amongst which were a sword and altagan, with gold scabbards, and mountings, Tanner's map of the United States, an American flag, a set of American coins, several rifles, a number of cut glass lamps, a quantity of American nankin, known as Forsyth's nankin. &c. &c." The 1804 dollar in this set was that offered as part of the Pogue collection last year. On pages 343-344, Ruschenberger discussed the Siam gift in similar terms. Besides the two diplomatic gift sets, Ruschenberger appears to have had an above-average interest in coins, regularly discussing the coinage of the various places he visits and discussing older coins on occasion. Very interesting, and rather scarce. Howes 514a.

Cindabright: Or, the Fatal Flowers. A Fairy Tale. With Minor Poems ?

Printed and Sold by John Wild, Bookseller (by Appointment) to the Queen; Sold also by Milliken and Son, Publishers, Dublin., Kensington 1838 - First edition, extremely scarce, of this dramatic allegory of Anglo-Irish relations.Trotter's is a grown-up fairy tale, a masque-like play in which the dramatis personae are given both dramatic and Spenserian allegorical names. The Queen becomes England, Judith is Ireland and the eponymous Cindabright is also the Irish Patriot. A lengthy note explains that Judith's dialogue references 'the past state of a country abandoned to all the disadvantages of exclusion from a share in the social and political happiness and prosperity'. Trotter uses to explore a Spenserian world in which Ireland has recourse to question its historical treatment by the English.Trotter believes in the merit of fairies, which here represent Sentiment; she likes 'their mystified nothings, through which we may detect beautiful wit at times'. In a common refrain over the loss of innocence, Trotter prefixes Cindabright by wondering, 'Have the wonderful discoveries of modern science put to flight our pleasant fairies, with all their train of fancy play?' Ultimately, Trotter need not have worried that 'giant steam, with his real wonders' would overpowered the products of make believe, for alongside the industrial revolution developed the peculiar Victorian preoccupation with fairies, most obviously articulated in era's relative profusion of fairy paintings and stories. Seldom however are these corralled into patriotic invective, as here. 8vo (224 x 135 mm), pp. vi, [2], 151, [1], with two lithographed plates; tissue guards preserved; uniformly a little browned; untrimmed and partially unopened in publisher's brown paper-backed boards, printed paper label to upper cover; rebacked, with fragments of original spine preserved, water staining to edges of boards. [Just three copies recorded. COPAC lists just two copies in the UK, both at the British Library, to which WorldCat adds one in the US, at Princeton. Not in Jackson, nor Jackson, Women.] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Timpoochee Barnard, an Uchee Warrior

Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1838. Lithograph "Drawn Printed and Coloured at J.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment", after a C.B.King portrait painted in 1825. In excellent condition apart from some light off-setting in the plate. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America'.A venerated Yuchi chief, Timpoochee Barnard had a Scotish father and Yuchi mother. He was a commissioned major who valiantly fought under General Jackson against the Creeks in the 1814 Battle of Callabee Creek.. Major Barnard's distinguished military career continued with his gallant participation in the 1818 Seminole War and the battle at Econaffinnah or Natural Bridge of the same year. After travelling to Washington to contest the Indian Springs Treaty of 1825, he settled near Fort Mitchell, where he remained until his death. Of Timpoochee, President Jackson once remarked to his son, "A braver man than your father never lived." Also known as the Choya'ha or Tsoya'ha, meaning 'children of the sun', the Yuchi tribe inhabited the Southeastern region of the United States. They had been practically eliminated by the Creeks and Cherokees and lived uneasily in their midst.McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America' has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The portraits are largely based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Keokuk, and Black Hawk. After six years as Superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the Native Americans for profit, and his vocal warnings about their future prompted his appointment by President Monroe to the Office of Indian Affairs. As first director, McKenney was to improve the administration of Indian programs in various government offices. His first trip was during the summer of 1826 to the Lake Superior area for a treaty with the Chippewa, opening mineral rights on their land. In 1827, he journeyed west again for a treaty with the Chippewa, Menominee , and Winebago in the present state of Michigan. His journeys provided an unparalleled opportunity to become acquainted with Native American tribes. When President Jackson dismissed him from his government post in 1830, McKenney was able to turn more of his attention to his publishing project. Within a few years, he was joined by James Hall, a lawyer who had written extensively about the west.McKenney and Hall saw their work as a way of preserving an accurate visual record of a rapidly disappearing culture.

      - Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1838-1840. Two parts in one. Large 8vo (22.7 x 15.1 cm). Title page (to the text, dated 1840) xi, 469 pp.; second title page (to the atlas, dated 1838), [ii] pp., 36 lithographed plates. Contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards. Spine rich gilt. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges.l A very rare work by the French geologist Eugène Robert (1806-1882) on the geology of, mainly, Iceland with fine lithographed plates of volcanos, glaciers, and other geological features. Robert was perhaps the first to observe the geology of Iceland with a trained scientific eye. He is perhaps better known for his other "northern" geological work, which formed part of the "Voyages de la Commission Scientifique du Nord en Scandinavie, en Laponie, au Spitzberg et aux Feroë" (1852), but the Iceland part is much rarer, not appearing in Ward & Carozzi, who do list the later, 1852 work (as from 1845, with a query) and wrongly recorded 1879 as the year of his death. The title page mentions another goal of the expedition, namely to trace another French research vessel, the Lilloise, which vanished in 1833 in the waters between Greenland and Iceland. This part of the expedition was unsuccessful and it is still a mystery how, when, and where the Lilloise disappeared. Small old stamp on the title pages and plate versos (not shining through). Unobtrusive, very light traces of off-setting to about five plates, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 1468 (under Gaimard). Cat. BM(NH) p. 607 (under France, Commission Scientifique du Nord); Ward & Carozzi, 1885-1886 (not this work). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Atlas to: Die Infusionsthierchen als volkommene Organismen.

Leipzig, Leopold Voss, 1838. Folio (46.0 x 35.5 cm). Title page and 64 hand-coloured engraved plate. 20th century brown blind rexine.l The rare atlas, with beautiful, detailed, and finely coloured engravings. "Ehrenberg's great contribution to biology was his work on infusiora, the results of which were published in a number of brief essays and afterwards in the important and splendidly got up work entitled 'Die Infusionsthierchens'... printed in 1838. The result of this and other works of his was that the number of known Infusiora was considerably increased, and their classification essentially advanced" (Nordenskiöld). "Infusoria is a collective term for minute aquatic creatures such as ciliates, euglenoids, protozoa, unicellular algae and small invertebrates that exist in freshwater ponds. In modern formal classifications, the term is considered obsolete; the microorganisms previously included in the Infusoria are mostly assigned to the kingdom Protista which itself is a polyphyletic assemblage of groups" (Wikipedia). The illustrations include, amongst others, many plants (i.e. chlorophyll bearing organisms), diatoms, and tiny crustaceans. Plates evenly toned and unobtrusively micro-speckled. Small chip to the lower outer corner of one plate. The binding is strong but simple. A good, complete copy of this rare atlas.

[Atlas to: Die Infusionsthierchen als volkommene Organismen.

      - Leipzig, Leopold Voss, 1838. Folio (46.0 x 35.5 cm). Title page and 64 hand-coloured engraved plate. 20th century brown blind rexine.l The rare atlas, with beautiful, detailed, and finely coloured engravings. "Ehrenberg's great contribution to biology was his work on infusiora, the results of which were published in a number of brief essays and afterwards in the important and splendidly got up work entitled 'Die Infusionsthierchens'. printed in 1838. Garison & Morton, 111; Nissen ZBI, 1244; Nordenskiöld, 427.

GRAZ: PLAN DER KAISERLICH KÖNIGLIECHEN PROVINZIAL-HAUPTSTADT GRATZ SAMT IHREN UMGEBUNGEN IN HERZOGTHUME STEYERMARK.

Vienna: Lithogr. Rumpold - Jos. Fr. Kaiser, . 1838 - Lithograph (restored folds slightly age-toned with tiny repaired holes and tears, small tears in margins) 48,5 x 58 cm (19 x 22.8 inches). A very rare separately published early lithographed map shows Graz in Styria, Austria, and its surroundings. The map was made by an Austrian map maker Joseph Franz Kaiser (1786–1863?), wo was experimenting with early lithographs. He was also an author of very rare folding globes. The map shows Graz in 1838, in the time of its quick industrial evolution, when numerous new factories were built. The lithographer Rumpold was a printer and lithographer, based in Vienna, who was experimenting with different printing techniques. Very rare - no known examples on the market or in the institutions. One example from 1825 in the University Library of Prague. This 1838 edition of the map is slighty different of the 1825 edition. Added were some new names of the factories, which developped in the previous 13 years.

Howes 514a.

Published by Alexander Flash. Looker & Ramsay, Printers,, Cincinnati: 1838 - [2], 76 pp, with frontis illustration of the safety device "Proposed by Dr. Locke", a "New Spring Manometer." Bookplate of Cincinnati native Charles Theodore Greve on blank portion of the title page's verso. Bound in modern paper over boards. Very Good. "The Moselle was a new boat, plying between Cincinnati and St. Louis. On Wednesday, April 25th, 1838, immediately on leaving Cincinnati, her boilers, four in number, exploded, killing one hundred and fifty persons" [Thomson]. Built in Cincinnati, the 'Moselle' completed construction at the end of March 1838. Its first trip, Cincinnati to St. Louis, occurred on April 1. Its schedule rendered it one of the fastest steamers in use. A Cincinnati Committee appointed Dr. John Locke to figure out how things had gone wrong. This document prints "a vivid eyewitness account" [Eberstadt] and Locke's Report-- with text illustrations and much scientific discussion-- on the causes, including faulty construction.Thomson [Ohio] 291. 168 Eberstadt 516.

Carcassonne, 1838. Folio (409 x 267 mm). Manuscript album, 59 leaves (one full-sheet), written on rectos, in 2 parts: Part 1, foliated 1-16 18-33 35-49 [1] 50-60 ff., with calligraphic exercises and drawings, on thin wove paper watermarked J Whatman or Canson 1828; Part 2, unfoliated, [29] leaves including one full-sheet, of geometrical, architectural, botanical and entomological drawings, on thick wove paper. Text in brown ink, drawings in brown or black ink with occasional colored inks, graphite or gray ink in part 2; the artist-calligrapher responsible (or pair of artists) identified in lower right corner of each sheet, apparently in the same hand throughout. Some showthrough and a few perforations from acidic ink (the cause, apparently, of the loss of a small roundel in title border), short marginal tears to f. 40 in part 1 and [19] in part 2. Contemporary half sheep, sides covered with onlaid brown patterned paper within gilt roll-tooled outer border, spine gilt-lettered "Cours d'Instr[uction]," lozenge-shaped gold-stamped red paper label on lower cover "Ecole Chrétienne," corresponding label lost from upper cover, comb-marbled endpapers (rubbed, edges scuffed). *** A remarkable, highly finished manuscript album, composed by a group of pupils for their teacher, containing a variety of accomplished calligraphic and ornamental exercises as well as architectural and botanical drawings. The sub-title states that this Cahier was "dedicated to dear Fr. Aphrodise, Doctor of the Community, by the pupils of the 6th class at Carcassonne in the year 1838" (Dédié au cher F[rè]re Aphrodise D[oc]teur de la Communauté par les Elèves de la 6ème Classe de Carcassone l'an 1838.) The French "Sixième" is the equivalent of American fifth or sixth grade, the children being around 11; this does not seem to have changed since the nineteenth century. It is, to say the least, hard to square these sophisticated designs with the capabilities of pre-pubescent males. Fourteen boys contributed to the album; while five boys supplied one sheet each, the rest contributed from four to seventeen sheets, including a few that are signed jointly by more than one young calligrapher. In order of first appearance, these skilled young students were named: Pascal Montagué, François Marquet, Joseph Jambé[s?], Jacques Caul, Michel Jammé (several sheets signed simply "Michel"), Germain Mouynés, Jean Jacques, Francois B., Antoine Vassal, Vincent Maury, Paul Plané[s], François Taillefer, Mathieu Arnaud, and Guillaume Fournial. Some signed with their last names first and others vice-versa; it is not always easy to tell which is which. The general title is written within an elaborate cartouche border incorporating acanthus leaves and sprigs, with four inset drawings of moths. The first part, on thinner paper, is devoted to calligraphy. The texts are props for the scripts. There are 6 leaves with one or more alphabets, and 3 leaves with texts plus alphabets, and a few nonsensical lists of place names or words related only by their calligraphic requirements (such as m's and n's: Commissionnaire Nouvellement Pauvrement désintéressement..., f. 29). But most of the texts, written largely in heavily sloping italics, are religious, moralistic, telegraphically aphoristic, or factual, containing elegant descriptions of animals (usually but not always depicted in the accompanying calligraphic drawings), or of French cities or provinces. F. 12 contains a reflection on writing itself, "Eloge de l'Ecriture." Twenty examples incorporate exuberant calligraphic drawings, nearly all of animals: a peacock, eagles, doves, a stork catching a fish, ducks among reeds surprised by a dog, a lion, a horse, fish, and a hissing dragon facing another fantastical beast. Twenty other sheets use non-calligraphic botanical or floral wreaths or borders, beautifully executed. In a tour de force of calligraphy, on f. 19 Germain Mouynés wrote out the Lord's Prayer in Latin in 17 different "display" characters, copiously flourished and illustrated with small inset drawings of the Eye of Providence, the holy dove, cherub's heads, and an inset scene of Eden (without its human protagonists). The second part displays "linear designs," mainly geometrical and architectural, including a couple of facades, and some monumental vases, all with fine calligraphic captions. The last seven leaves contain naturalistic drawings by Mathieu Arnaud, of which six of flowers and plants, several to a page, the last two being a large tulip shown with and without shading, and a lily complete with its roots, flanked by two smaller flowers. The final drawing shows beetles, moths, centipedes, a grasshopper, a chrysalis, bees, a ladybug, and other bugs. Arnaud and Pascal Montagué were responsible for all but one of the drawings in the second part (the exception was by Guillaume Fournial, his only contribution),
