        Red Bird, A Winnebago

Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen. Hand-coloured lithograph by J. T. Bowen. Sheet size: 10 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Fine condition. A rare image in very fine condition, issued only in this format Most of the McKenney and Hall images are available in both folio and octavo format. The present image was only published as the frontispiece to volume II of the octavo edition of McKenney and Hall's History of the Indian Tribes of North America. McKenney wrote: `All eyes were fixed on Red Bird ... of all the Indians I ever saw, he is, without exception, the most perfect in form, in face, and gesture. In height, he is about six feet; straight, but without restraint. His proportions are those of the most exact symmetry, and these embrace the entire man, from his head to his feet.' McKenney goes on to describe his costume and actions in great detail, all in terms of great admiration, but contrasting this with the fact that, according to the law, Red Bird was a murderer. He and two accomplices had murdered a man called Gagnier (a half-Indian half-French settler) and an ex-soldier staying with him. In fact he had acted in accordance with the Indian law, but had surrendered to the authorities to avoid retribution being visited on his people as a whole. Red Bird was taken with one of his accomplices (We-Kau, shown seated to Red Bird's right) to Prairie du Chien, handed over to the civil authority and put in prison, where he died `of crushed hopes, and a broken heart!' Red Bird died in 1838.

(Catalog of the Anatomical Theatre's Collections at the Breslau University – from one of the Fathers of Modern Teratology). - Neues Verzeichniss der anatomischen Sammlung des Königl. Anatomie-Instituts zu Breslau.

Breslau, Hirt, 1838.. Octavo. 5 ff., 224 pp. Professional recent marbled boards matching contemporary style. Title with a faint, old library stamp (stating just ‘library copy', but there is no indication there on which library is meant), pages minorily browned, but all together a very good to fine copy. First edition of this catalog of the anatomical collections at the University of Breslau (today Wroc?aw, Poland) counting for more than 12.000 specimen, among which several thousands of zoological and zootomical interest. “Sehr geschätztes Verzeichnis und Beschreibung der Präparaten-Sammlung des anatomischen Instituts zu Breslau” (ADB 24, 744). A first catalog of the museum with only 8.000 (and for a large part different) specimen was published from 1826 to 1833 and according to the author had become obsolet after a huge amount of preparats had been destroyed by intense use and transport and therefore had to be replaced by new and different ones. On top of that also the complete arrangement of the museum had changed significantly in the meantime making it neccessary to publish a new catalog (see preface, f. 3). The author, who graduated as a medician with degrees from the Universities of Greifswald and Frankfurt studied also under Georges Cuvier in Paris and held the position of a professor for anatomy in Breslau from 1813 on. While also being remembered as a zoologist describing quite a number of new species of mammals, birds and especially molluscs for the first time and not only by that contributing to natural history, he was the man behind the new anatomical theatre and museum in Breslau, which was established upon his initiative in the years of 1834/1835. Otto added a wealth of material to the local collections (all to be identified in the catalog by his intials!) and while the main focus of his interest all throughout his career lay on the subject of human and animal malformations, about a fourth of the entries in the catalog describe preparats of such conditions. His efforts for the Breslau anatomical museum and his writings on the subject made Otto one of the most prominent fathers of modern teratology.

Biographical Sketches and Interesting Anecdotes of Persons of Color to which is added a Selection of Pieces of Poetry

New York: Trustees of the residuary estate of Lindley Murray, 1838. 408p, third edition of this work that was first published in 1826, period leather-binding (polished calf) with old repairs and edge wear, spine worn with gilt bands but title label absent, period owner's name inked on free front fly leaf, darkened endpapers with foxing and slight foxing throughout. Mott's book was stunning for the period in its attempt to humanize people of color through short biographies, stories demonstrating the humanity of blacks, and evidence of their creativity through poetry. Her sketches range internationally in scope (Sierra Leone, the Caribbean, Liberia, the US), including the well-known (Toussaint L'Ouverture, Phyllis Wheatley), the obscure (Poor Sarah. Billy and Jenny), and Native Americans (Good Old Ruth the Pequot, Margaret Ann Crutchfield). This edition was published during a period of intense violence against abolitionists, particularly women. Mott agreed to have the book's design geared to classroom use. Abigail Field Mott (1766-1851) lived in Westchester County, NY before moving to Burlington, NJ. She was an observant Quaker and aunt by marriage to abolitionist and feminist Lucretia Coffin Mott. In this book, she sought "to encourage virtue and morality in the different classes of society; and by bringing into view the effects which a system of slavery has on the human mind, and the dreadful consequences of that arbitrary power invested in the slaveholder over his fellow-being, to show how it hardens the heart and petrifies the feelings.

> Thieme-Becker, XXVI, 442. Not having heard from him for two years, his wife married [Richard] Smith. Carson returned and, in trying to dispossess Smith of his wife and home, was shot by Smith. The judge practically directed Smith's conviction and he was hanged. Mrs. Carson, who was a rugged individual in her own right, tried to kidnap the governor to save Smith. After his execution she joined a gang of counterfeiters and subsequently died in prison" (McDade). This account went through 2 editions, both in 1838. The second edition is better because it contains additional material, as indicated by the title. Both editions are rare.         Le Cuisinier Royal Seizieme Edition, augmentee de douze cents article nouveau [alternate title Le Cuisinier Imperial]

Paris: Gustave Barba, Editeur du Cabinet Litteraire, 1838. Octavo, 616 pages. Illustrated with 7 engravings. The sixteenth of reportedly thirty-two editions, this was originally published under the title, Le Cuisiner Imperial and was changed to Royal with the reinstatement of the Bourbons. Viard, who called himself "Homme de Bouche," is said to have been chef de cuisine for both Louis XVI and Napolean. This remains unclear. What we do know is that this work was one of the great cookbooks of the era, and that it competed with Careme's L'Art de la Cuisine Française for space on French kitchen shelves throughout much of the 19th century. Le Cuisinier Royal was expanded in the 1920s by Mm. Fouret and Delan. This edition includes a detailed index, seven plates of table settings with menus for entertaining, and additional writings on wines by M. Grignon and M. Pierrhugues. This copy quite foxed throughout, and with some general soiling and wear to the text block. A few pages untrimmed. Still, complete and sound. In one-quarter brown calf with marbled paper covered boards. Less than very good. With three manuscript recipes in a contemporary hand, tipped into the rear with wax. [Bitting p. 478; Cagle 433-437 (other eds.); Oberle 168 (1841 edition); Vicaire].
