        Oliver Twist; or, the Parish Boy's Progress. By "Boz

      London: Richard Bentley, 1838. London: Richard Bentley,, 1838. 3 volumes, octavo. Original reddish brown fine-diaper cloth, spine in compartments with gilt titles, sides each stamped in blind with an arabesque cartouche, yellow coated endpapers. 24 etched plates by George Cruikshank including the "Fireside" plate (facing p. 313 in vol. III). Slightest touch of fading to spines, sprinkle of spotting to top edge not extending into the text, a very few instances of the beginnings of separation between one or two gatherings, but an exceptional copy in bright cloth, hinges entirely uncracked, text and plates clean and fresh: a fine copy. First edition in cloth; first issue with the Fireside plate. Walter E. Smith explains the bibliographical details in Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth: "when Bentley decided to publish Oliver in book form before its completion in his periodical, Cruikshank had to complete the last few plates in haste. Dickens did not review them until the eve of publication and objected to the Fireside plate ("Rose Maylie and Oliver" [the final plate in vol. III])... Dickens had Cruikshank design a new plate [the Church plate] which retained the same title ... This Church plate was not completed in time for incorporation into the early copies of the book, but it replaced the Fireside plate in later copies... Dickens not only objected to the Fireside plate, but also disliked having "Boz" on the title page. He voiced these objections prior to publication and the plate and title page were changed between November 9 [publication date] and 16.

        The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby

      London: Chapman and Hall. London: Chapman and Hall. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST BOOK EDITION IN SCARCE PUBLISHER'S DELUXE MOROCCO BINDING, of Dickens's third published novel; one of his most successful works, establishing his lasting reputation. "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby had begun its monthly part-issue in March 1838 and was completed in twenty numbers in October 1839. This story, which for thirteen months Dickens wrote alongside Oliver Twist, originated in his determination to expose the scandal of unwanted children consigned to remote and brutal Yorkshire schools; accompanied by Browne, he conducted an on-the-spot midwinter investigation just before beginning to write Nickleby. In this rambling, episodic, often wildly funny book, written very much in the mode of the Smollett novels Dickens had devoured as a child, the Yorkshire school setting is soon left behind, and the gallant young hero and his pathetic protégé, Smike, wander forth to undergo various adventures, both farcical and melodramatic; they are persecuted by Nicholas's wicked uncle and other villains, who also threaten the virtue of Nicholas's pure young sister Kate, but all is eventually set right by the benevolent Cheeryble brothers, though they cannot save Smike. The story is rich in unforgettable comic characters like the endlessly garrulous Mrs Nickleby and the strolling player Vincent Crummles and his troupe, and in places it resembles Sketches by Boz in its vivid evocation of particular London neighbourhoods" (Dictionary of National Biography).
 Complete with 40 plates (including frontispiece) by Phiz. Issue points: Nickleby is a notoriously complex book bibliographically. This copy with 36 of 41 first issue points as noted in Smith; including "latter" for "letter" (p. 160) but with "sister" for "visiter" (p.123). Frontispiece and first two plates with Chapman and Hall imprint (first state); third and fourth without imprint. London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. Octavo, original publisher's green morocco rebacked with original spine laid down. Some rubbing to upper joint of binding; browning to margins of plates (as usual). A very good copy in the very rare publisher's presentation morocco.

        OLIVER TWIST;

      , 1838. 1838. [our finest copy evah] or, The Parish Boy's Progress. By "Boz." In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley, 1838. 4 pp Vol I undated ads; 2 preliminary pp Vol III undated ads. Original purplish-brown fine-diaper cloth. First Edition, first issue, of this classic novel that has also been a hit as a Broadway musical. This is the "true first edition," not merely the "first edition in book form." Unlike most of Dickens's novels, OLIVER TWIST was not first issued in monthly serial parts; it did appear in "Bentley's Miscellany" magazine from February 1837 through April 1839, but this three-volume edition was published in November 1838. (OLIVER TWIST was finally issued in ten serial parts in 1846 -- one of the scarcest "Dickens in parts.")~Within a week after initial publication, copies began to be issued (at Dickens's insistence) with his name on the title pages (rather than "Boz"), and with the "church" plate replacing the "fireside" plate. This copy is of the first issue -- with "Boz" on the title pages and with the "fireside" plate at the end of Vol III. This set is in the primary fine-diaper cloth (some copies are in horizontally-ribbed cloth of the same color, but with a different arabesque design -- precedence unknown). This copy does have the "London/Bentley" imprint at the foot of the spines, where some copies are blank; it has been surmised that the blank binding is earlier, if only because Bentley would have been more likely to add than to remove his name from the volumes -- though precedence is far from certain. Lastly, the list of illustrations in Vol I is present in this copy: again it is uncertain whether its absence or its presence was the earlier state, though it is possible that Bentley may have begun inserting it when he realized that George Cruikshank's name had otherwise been omitted from the publication. (Bear in mind that the second issue, with Dickens's name on the title pages, was out within a week of the first; therefore, all of these questions of precedence among issue points involve only a few days.)~This set is in FINE condition: there is essentially no external wear to the cloth, the spine gilt remains bright, the original yellow endpapers exhibit only the merest hint of cracking, there is scarcely any foxing at all on the textual leaves or plates... in fact, the ONLY notable flaw is that on two covers there is a faint partial glass-ring. Period. This is the best copy we have offered in our almost-35-years in business. Smith I pp 28-37; Gimbel A27; Eckel pp 59-61; Carter BV p. 107 and MBV p. 7. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case.

        The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

      London: John Murray, 1838-39.. London: John Murray, 1838-39. Octavo, 12 volumes. Three quarters green morocco with raised bands to the spine, gilt stamping to the spine and gilt ruling to the front and rear panels. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. With folding maps to each volume. In near fine condition. A very attractive early set. This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works… Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" (PMM 222). "For 22 years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly 1500 years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, 146-7).

        DES MALADIES MENTALES CONSIDEREES SOUS LE RAPPORT MEDICAL, HYGIENIQUE, ET MEDICO-LEGAL.

      Bailliere, Paris (Bruxelles) 1838 - E.O. First Edition – Tre volumi: due volumi di testi di VI-(2)-393 pagine e VI-380 pagine; il terzo contenente 27 tavole in litografia, l'ultima più volte ripiegata. Dimensioni: 15,5x23 cm. Qualche fioritura sparsa, ma ottimo stato di conservazione. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle, piatti in tela percallina, dorso a nervi con titolo dorato. Ottima anche la stampa delle tavole incise di Ambroise Tardieu, che rappresentano una delle più impressionanti iconografie delle malattie mentali del XIX secolo. -Prima edizione, definita (anche in una nota del titolo) "di Bruxelles", ma in realtà francese, stampata a Corbeil nella tipografia Crété, nello stesso tempo di altra edizione con diversa paginazione. Uno dei più importanti testi di psichiatria moderna. Esquirol (1772-1840) fu allievo di Philippe Pinel. "Il faut qu'il y ait répression pour qu'il y ait guérison du malade : inspirer un sentiment de crainte, qui dompte et subjugue le malade, et provoquer une secousse morale en plaçant l'aliéné dans un état opposé et contraire à celui dans lequel il était avant de recourir à ce moyen. C'est la méthode perturbatrice. Pour Esquirol, il ne suffit donc plus de parler avec douceur et compassion, selon le traitement moral de Pinel. Théoricien clair et pratique concernant les institutions psychiatriques, il est avec ses élèves à l'origine de l'adoption de la loi de 1838 concernant les aliénés, qui met fin aux décisions d'internement arbitraires par simple lettre de cachet ou de décisions de justice".

        Autograph Letter Signed "John Barrow" to "Mr. James Mayning, Boatswain, HSM Talavera, Gibraltar" Informing Him About His Promotion; With a Rare Lithographed Proof Plate of Barrow's Portrait]: Sir John Barrow. F.R.S. &c., &c.

      London 1838 - Letter: Admiralty, 8 March 1838. Folio (ca. 31,5x20 cm). 1 p. (bifolium, with a second blank leaf). Brown ink in secretarial hand on J. Green & Son laid paper watermarked "1837"; signed by Barrow at the bottom. Fold marks, otherwise a very good letter. Portrait: ca. 1840s, ca. 25x20 cm. Lith. By T. Bridgford A.R.H.A. A printed note "Proof" on the lower margin. Minor edge wear not affecting image. Overall a very good portrait. An official letter signed by John Barrow as the second Secretary of the Admiralty informed that "My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty having been pleased to advance you from the Pay of a Third Rate to that of the First Class". The letter is addressed to a Royal Navy boatswain James Mayning. He was in the naval service for over 46 years, being stationed in the Caribbean, North America and East Indies, and was slightly wounded "at the reduction of the island of Cheduba" (Burma) while serving on HMS Slaney (The Oriental Herald and Colonial Review. London. Vol. Viii, September-December 1824, p. 576). Mayning served on HMS Talavera, a 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, in 1836-1840. The letter is supplemented with a rare proof lithographed portrait of John Barrow. John Barrow was a renowned English statesman, traveller and promoter of exploration; a member of the Royal Society (1805), a founding member and a president (1835-1837) of the Royal Geographical Society. He accompanied Lord Macartney's embassy to China (1792-4), and served during the latter's governorship in South Africa (1797-9) "collecting much of the commercial and strategic intelligence about the eastern seas and southern Africa" (Oxford DNB). Barrow was the auditor general to Cape Colony 1798-1803 and the second Secretary of the Admiralty in 1804-1845 (except for the period between 10 February 1806 and 7 April 1807). "In his position at the Admiralty, Barrow was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of discovery, including those of John Ross, William Edward Parry, James Clark Ross, and John Franklin. The Barrow Strait in the Canadian Arctic as well as Point Barrow and the city of Barrow in Alaska are named after him. He is reputed to have been the initial proposer of St Helena as the new place of exile for Napoleon Bonaparte following the Battle of Waterloo in 1815" (Wikipedia).

        Oliver Twist

      London: Richard Bentley, , 1838.. London: Richard Bentley, 1838. First edition, first issue. Octavo, three volumes, original red cloth. In near fine condition with light wear. "Dickens turned in Oliver Twist to the novel of crime and terror… Some characters are drawn with humorous realism, but for the most part humor is dimmed by gloomy memories of the author's own neglected childhood and sensational scenes are shrouded in an atmosphere genuinely eerie and sinister… That Dickens shared with his contemporaries the conviction that the novel should be an instrument of social reform is evident in Oliver Twist" (Baugh).
