BRET HARTE
BRET HARTE (1836-1902). Harte was a Nineteenth Century poet and author best known for writing about life in early California. 9 pages. 5 ½" x 7 ¼". A complete set of illustrated verses from Bret Harte's 1870 poem "Plain Language from Truthful James", later known as "The Heathen Chinee". The poem was intended as a satirical critique of nineteenth-century Californian prejudices against the Chinese, but it was interpreted by much of its readership as anti-Chinese and was often republished in that context. Harte himself, however, was strongly against racism. These images are from a series published in 1870 by Chicago's Western News Company with illustrations by Joseph Hull. They pages are in fine condition with some light aging and staining.

GASKELL (Peter)
- First Edition, xv, 399, [1]pp + 12pp publisher's catalogue, octavo, original gilt lettered diced cloth, carefully rebacked to match original, an excellent copy, very rare, with some interesting and informed pencilled annotations and notes, London, John W. Parker, 1836. *Goldsmith 29628. In this key book on the subject, Gaskell gives a clear, comprehensive and often heartbreaking idea of the appalling living conditions which many mill workers were forced to endure. Gaskell was a doctor who worked amongst the labouring population (he is named as a Surgeon on the title-page). Those who worked in such situations were often shocked by the conditions they encountered. Yet, by and large, they did not give vent to their feelings in emotional outbursts against industrial capitalism. In this they differed from contemporaries like Richard Oastler or William Cobbett, men confused and perplexed by industrialization who reacted by striking out blindly against it. Works like C. T. Thackrah's Effects of Arts, Trades and Professions on Health and Longevity, J. P. Kay's Moral and Physical Condition of the Working Classes or Peter Gaskell's Artisans and Machinery were not mere tirades against the industrial system but attempts to investigate the lives of the urban working classes and to isolate evils by enquiry and experiment. Gaskell gave no support to the view that the coming of the factories had coincided with the economic degradation of the workers. On the contrary, he was quite clear that, apart from the effect on the hand-loom weavers, it had resulted in abundant material progress and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Landells e Vasey. Tutte le figure di pesci (260) sono state finemente colorate a mano all'epoca, probabilmente su richiesta di un antico possessore, in quanto non si conoscono copie colorate a mano. In queste condizioni l'opera, in buone condizioni, risulta decisamente molto rara. BrM(NH), 2372, Casey Wood p.639. Dean II, p.661. Freeman BNHB, 4176. Nissen ZBI, 4488.

Contemporary full tree calf, raised bands and rich gilt decoration to spines, red and green labels, elaborate gilt border to covers, board edges gilt, remains of cloth page markers, marbled endpapers and edges. 87 plates, of which 6 are folding and one is large and hand-coloured. Bookplate of Edward Nicholas Hurt to front pastedowns. A few scuff marks to covers. Otherwise a fine pair. Never a biblical literalist, "it could be argued that more than anyone else he [Buckland] was responsible for making geology, and in particular the concept of 'deep time', acceptable to the Anglican establishment centred on Oxford, and so for paving the way for the Darwinian revolution" (ODNB).
