Czech, Franz Herrmann
Mechitaristen- Congregations-Buchhandlung, Wien, 1836. Lex-8° (26,5 x 20,5 cm). Prächtige Ausgabe in zwei Bänden in Halbleder. Vol. I: XXI, [2 = table], [1 blank], 25-441, [3 index]; Vol. II: engraved frontispiece, 67 plates, 3 maps (2 folding), (cf. photo #1), 1 engraved sketch of all institutes for the deaf and dumb and their professors. +++ Contemp. half calf, spines richly gilt with raised bands, marbled edges. Vol. II on handmade paper (Büttenpapier). First edition. The first work on the education of the deaf and dumb to attract international attention. It was published as a help for teaching the deaf mutes, with detailed exposition of the system both in the text and on the numerous figures or scenes on the fine plates. Czech regarded thinking as a mental activity being innate in each individual. Articulated speech may make the process easier but is not intrinsically necessary. He therefore thought it both morally and legally a duty to provide education to the deaf and dumb. Czech had been professor of philosophy at the Theresianischen Ritter-Akademie in Vienna and in 1818 was appointed professor at the famous Wiener Taubstummen Institut. This institute had been founded in 1779 by Maria Theresia after the example of the French Institution Nationale des Sourds Muets of the famous Abbe de l'Epee. +++ Covers well preserved, for overall outside condition and details see photo # 2. Vol. I: some foxing on FEPs and index pp., else spotless and bright. Vol. II: faded small stamps on front and end paper. Paper edges foxed. About 10 out of 72 etched tables show scarce and incons … [Click Below for Full Description]

KRETZER, VON IMMERTREU, FERDINAND I
Austrian Empire, Vienna, d.d. 17 July 1836. Folio. Full red velvet, with yellow and black ribbons. Good condition, except for a stain on the silk end paper. 38x30 cm. 10 pages. Manuscript, calligraphic text on vellum, with printed decorative margins. With a very large hand painted coloured coat-of-arms. In the end the original signature of Ferdinand I and of Anton Friedrich Grafen Mittrowsky von Mittrowitz and Nemischl. Imperial wax seal with one large crack, in a disc shaped copper case, attached to the document by the gold cord of the binding. All encased in a metal box. This patent of nobility was donated by Ferdinand I of Austria in the early days of his reign (1835-1848). Ferdinand I is widely believed to have been a weak ruler and it is sometimes supposed that he lacked intellectual capacities. He also suffered from ill health. During the revolution of 1848, Ferdinand fled the country and abdicated in favour of his nephew Franz Joseph I. The patent explains at length the reasons why Kretzer recieved his nobility. He was born in Jägerndorf and joined the army in 1796. He became Fahnrich and subsequently Unterlieutenant in 1809, Oberlieutenantin 1813, Kapitänlieutenant in 1829 und Hauptman in 1831. He left the army in 1833 as a pensioner. He took part in the campaigns in 1799, 1805, 1809, 1813 and 1814 (Napolenonic Wars). Between 1803-1805 he was first teacher at the Regiments-Knaben-Erziehungshause (military school) and in 1809, 1813 and 1814 he was Regiments Adjudant. He recieves the noble title and the right to call himself Kretzer von Immertreu which translates as a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gauß, Carl Friedrich, German mathematician (1777-1855).
25 Jan. 1836. 2 pp. Large 4to. - 27 Feb. 1839. 2 pp. Large 4to. - 28 Dec. 1841. 3½ pp. 8vo. - 6 Jan. 1849. 3 pp. Large 4to (altogether 10½ pp.). All written on bifolia; the first two letters bear seals with the autograph address on the reverse of the counter-leaf. Collection of four long, unpublished letters spanning more than a decade, all to the Berlin physicist and geologist Georg Adolf Erman (1806-77), who had returned from a long voyage around the world and was in the process of publishing his findings ("Reise um die Welt durch Nordasien und die beiden Oceane", 5 vols. of history [1833-42] and 2 vols. of physics [1835-41, with atlas]). Gauss was able to draw on Erman's empirical observations about earth's magnetic field. All four letters begin with thanks for gifts sent by Erman, then develop into extensive scientific discussions which even touch upon Gauss's thermogalvanic experiments. Also, Gauss mentions his attempts to obtain books of Russian fiction. - In 1836 Gauss thanks Erman for presenting him with the 2nd part of his "Reise um die Erde" ("Ortsbestimmungen und Declinationsbeobachtungen auf dem festen Lande"): "This work contains a great wealth of facts. I am particularly interested in your magnetic observations and therefore am glad that you decided to include in this early volume your compass declinations with their results. These, in connection with other observations, will serve to supply the gap left by Barlow's map of declinations [...] But now I dearly look forward to the publication of the second part which is to contain the intensities and inclination … [Click Below for Full Description]

Folio, [6] pages printed in four columns, unbound as issued. The vertical fold of the first leaf is a little holed, just slightly affecting the printed surface on the verso; essentially a very good copy in crisp condition. THE FIRST NEWSPAPER PRINTED IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA, very rare indeed, and considerably more so than the London printing of the first number of 18 June the previous year. G.H. Pitt, in 'The Press in South Australia, 1836-1850' (1946), suggests a print run of about 100 copies, of which no more than a handful can have survived. The contents are of great interest, including proclamations issued by the Governor from December 1836 to May 1837; an account of his arrival and installation; a record of the first land sale, with the names of the buyers and prices; and the inaugural address of the Chief Justice, referring at some length to relations with the Aborigines.

Emerson, Ralph Waldo
Boston: James Munroe, 1836. Original brown cloth. Minimal bubbling to cloth, spine ends slightly worn, minor staining, light foxing. A very good copy. Fine half morocco case.FIRST EDITION, the state with page 94 misnumbered 92. Emerson's first book, Nature was published anonymously. In this manifesto of Transcendentalism, Emerson called for a fresh new American approach to life, God, and nature, writing, "Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? . . . There are new lands, new men, new thoughts. Let us demand our own works and laws and worship." "The impact of his shining, energizing personality is still strong. Few Americans have been more picturesque; none holds a solider presence in the history of American life" (Mark Van Doren in DAB). The great American writers of his day held Emerson in awe. Oliver Wendell Holmes called him "the Buddha of the West." James Russell Lowell wrote in A Fable for Critics, "There comes Emerson first, whose rich words, every one, / Are like gold nails in temples to hang trophies on." Evaluating his American predecessors, Whitman wrote, "Emerson, to me, stands unmistakably at the head, but for the others I am at a loss where to give any precedence." Grolier 100 English Books 80.
