Washington, DC, 1836. 4to. One-page, approximately 175 words, in part: "Mr. M. Smith has applied to me to purchase La Fayette, stating that you referred him to me and were willing to any terms that I might propose. I have written to him that, with your approbation, I should be willing to take $400, reserving the privilege to each of us for sending five cows to him. If you are satisfied with these terms this sale may be made, otherwise not ... I shall be glad to receive your frank opinion of the cattle I have lately sent out; particularly of the bull and three imported cows ... Six asses (three of each sex) are on their way from Malta to K[entucky]. and I expect will arrive at Ashland in all the month of March. If there is not mistake in their measurement, they are larger than any ever introduced into K[entucky], of Maltese asses." Clay's activities as an importer of cattle and asses and his role in breeding thoroughbreds are discussed at length in the article 'Henry Clay and his Ashland Estate' by Richard Troutman ("Filson Club Historical Quarterly," Vol. 30, pp. 159-174). Some foxing, but very good and quite legible. Folded for mailing (small hole at one corner fold, affecting two letters). (#6276).

Humboldt, Karl Wilhelm Von
Berlin: Koniglichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1836. I slightly waterstained, else very good. Includes a printed slip (in French) from "Alexandre de Humboldt" presenting "les trois volumes" on behalf of his deceased brother. Humboldt (1767-1835), the founder of the University of Berlin who showed the philological commonality of Spain with the north of Africa, was the older brother of the more celebrated Alexander von Humboldt. Published posthumously, this is his linguistic masterpiece and inarguably one of the most important books in that broad subject known as Philology. Its subject is the ancient Kwai language of Java, and it incorporates the first issue of his remarkable essay "Uber die Verschiedenheit des Menschlischen Sprachbaues und ihren Einfluss auf geistige Entwickelung des Menschengeschlechts" (The Heterogeneity of Human Language and its Influence on the Intellectual Development of Mankind), which was also published separately later the same year. "Eventually, he turned to the study of the ancient Kawi language of Java. The work remained only a fragment when Humboldt died; but he had completed a lengthy foreword on The Heterogeneity of Language ... (Uber die Verschiedenheit...) which was edited by his younger brother ... the great traveler and naturalist, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Holley, Mary Austin
Lexington, Ky.: J. Clarke & Co., 1836. [2],viii ,410pp. plus folding engraved map of Texas on onionskin paper, 26.8 x 34 cm., with original handcolored outline and shading. Original tan muslin, printed paper label (chipped). Some wear and repairs to cloth. Moderate foxing. The Hooker map is clean and crisp. Gift bookplate dated 1838 from G.M. Bryan to Nu Pi Kappa Society at Kenyon College in Ohio (Guy M. Bryan was the nephew of Stephen F. Austin). Huntington Library deaccession stamp on rear pastedown. Overall very good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt extra. This is Mrs. Holley's second book on Texas, intended as a practical and informative guide for emigrants to the area. Despite the title, which is similar to that of the author's Baltimore 1833 book, this is a completely different work. Jenkins calls it "a much more important book." Included herein is a general history of Texas to May 5, 1836; a printing of the Texas and Mexican constitutions; Stephen Austin's farewell address of March 7; and specific information regarding settlements, towns, business and banking matters, transportation and communication facilities, etc. While her earlier book served to promote the enthusiastic interest of prospective emigrants to Texas, in this work Mrs. Holley provides the hard facts of what they would find there. As Stephen F. Austin's cousin, she was in a position to know. The Hooker "Map of the State of Coahuila and Texas" was published several times, with revisions to reflect the changing face of Texas. This edition is quite striking, with the grants colored … [Click Below for Full Description]

Holley, Mary Austin
Lexington, Ky.: J. Clarke & Co., 1836. [2],viii ,410pp. plus folding map. 12mo. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt with leather label. Map backed on linen. Contemporary inscription by Holley titlepage. Very good. A presentation copy from Mrs. Holley, inscribed in her hand at the head of the titlepage: "B. Drake from the Author." This is very likely Benjamin Drake, author of CINCINNATI IN 1826 and biographies of Indian chiefs Tecumseh and Black Hawk. He was the younger brother of Daniel Drake, the most distinguished physician of the West at the time, who had headed the medical department of Transylvania University when Mrs. Holley's husband Horace was president there. In the small literary world of Lexington and Cincinnati, Benjamin Drake and Mrs. Holley would have naturally known each other well. Inscribed copies of Mrs. Holley's book are quite rare. This is Mrs. Holley's second book on Texas, intended as a practical and informative guide for emigrant's to the area. [Landon, Letitia Elizabeth].
London: Albert Schloss, 1836. Miniature (2 cm, .787"); in a publisher's slipcase slightly larger. 64 pp.; 7 plts., 4 music pp. A delightful contradiction: a "practical" almanac, in a wildly impractical, less than thumbnail-size presentation. In addition to its calendrical information, this miniature gem of a volume features seven engraved portraits, each of which is accompanied by poetry from Letitia Elizabeth Landon ("L.E.L."). => At the back are four pages of sheet music — surely impossible to play from! — for the Rondo from Balfe's "Maid of Artois." The book's extreme tininess led one contemporary reviewer to conclude that it had been provided by "the Bookseller to all the faeries" (Gentleman's Magazine, Feb. 1837).    This is a copy of the second English Bijou Almanac. Schloss's series of miniature almanacs, often given as => gift books, began with the one for 1836 (published in 1835) and ended with that for 1843. Those for 1836–38 did not bear Schloss's name in the title, that was added beginning with the almanac for 1839. "Schloss engaged Benjamin Reese Davies, a specialist in engraved script . . . to engrave the . . . series. His skill and consistency are apparent in both the text and portraits on steel plates" (Bromer & Edison, p. 95). Once the engraving was accomplished the work was transferred to a lithographic stone for actual printing, the whole process being called "transfer lithography" (Bain, p. 8)    Binding: Orchid-colored paper, wrappers with gilt-stamped lyre and wreath motif, all edges gilt. Volume housed in a velvet- and silk-lined tan morocco clamshell … [Click Below for Full Description]
