ZENKER, Jonathan Carl
1836. One folding lithographed map of the city & its environs and one folding lithographed plate of the geological strata of the region. x, 338 pp. 8vo, cont. turquoise glazed boards (joints a little worn, some foxing), uncut. Jena: F. Frommann, 1836.First edition of this uncommon work on the great university city of Jena in Thuringia. Since the 16th century, the city's university has traditionally been in the forefront of German universities in acceptance of new and liberal ideas. For this book, Zenker (1799-1837), professor of natural history at the University of Jena, has organized a team of colleagues to describe the various aspects of the city. As we learn from the title, the text particularly focuses on the natural history and medical resources of Jena. There are chapters on the history of the Jena, its most notable features and buildings, its scientific and cultural organizations, the climate, the mineralogy and geology of the area, the abundance and qualities of the local water sources, the vegetation and crops growing in the area, and an important section on the general health of the population with detailed accounts of the hospitals and other medical facilities.Very good copy. Old library stamp on verso of title with release stamp.

CUVIER, G.
Paris, Fortin, Masson et Cie, (1836-1849). 20 volumes (10 text-volumes & 10 atlas-volumes). Royal-8vo (269 x 188mm). With 993 engraved plates, apart from a few anatomical plates, all finely handcoloured. Publisher's half brown morocco, gilt decorated spines with gilt lettering. A very fine complete copy of the famous 'Disciples Edition', which eclipses all others for scientific accuracy and beauty of embellishment. Each division is edited by the most eminent professors of this period such as: Milne Edwards, Quatrefages, d'Orbigny, Valenciennes. The work is composed as follows: Les Mammifères, by M. Edwards; Les Oiseaux, by A. d'Orbigny; Les Reptiles, by M. Duvernoy; Les Poissons, by A. Valenciennes; Les Mollusques, by G.P. Deshayes; Les Insectes, by Audouin, Blanchard, Doyère et M. Edwards; Les Arachnides, by A. Duges and M. Edwards; Les Crustacées, by M. Edwards; Les Annelides, by M. Edwards; Les Zoophytes, by M. Edwards. The numbering of the plates is somewhat confusing as some plates have never been published. Nissen gives a collation but his listing is not quite correct. The best artists of the period contributed such as E.Travies, Vaillant, Audouin, A. Milne Edwards, Oudart. The plates are of a surprising exactness of detail and the colouring is very attractive.Provenance: bookplate of Théodore Riant.Nissen ZBI, 1014. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PARENT-DUCHATELET (A.-J.-B.)
Paris Baillière 1836 2 vol. in-8 de XXIV-624 pp. et (4)- 4 pp. (catalogue) 580 pp., demi-basane blonde, dos lisse orné de filets dorés (reliure de l'époque). Edition originale. Garrison-Morton, 1607 ; Waller, 7195 ; Bibl. Osleriana, 3615. Bon exemplaire malgré des rousseurs.

IRVING, WASHINGTON
Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1836., Philadelphia. First edition. First issue (copyright notice on verso of title page of Vol. 1, garbled footnote on page 239 of Vol. 2, folding map in front of Vol. 2). 2 Volumes. Original reddish (plum?) pebbled cloth, gilt imprint on spine, 285 pp. + 279 pp. + 8 pages of advertisement at rear of Vol. 2. Large folding map. At the request of John Jacob Astor, Washington Irving agreed to write the story of Astor's ill-fated attempt to control the lucrative fur trade of the Pacific Northwest by establishing a fort at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1811. Irving was given access to Astor's huge collection of manuscript material, and in the Introduction, Irving also acknowledges the use of some information from previously published works: "I have, therefore, availed myself occasionally of collateral lights supplied by the published journals of other travelers who have visited the scenes described: such as Messers. Lewis and Clarke (SIC), Bradbury, Breckenridge, Franchere, and Ross Cox, and make a general acknowledgement of aid received from these quarters." "Classic account of the first American attempt at settlement on the Pacific coast, 1811--initial action towards substantiating our claim to Oregon--including the earliest extended relation of Wilson P. Hunt's overland expedition from St. Louis to that settlement."--Wright Howes. The important map of the overland routes of Robert Stuart and Wilson P. Hunt is found here in fine condition, with 1 minor closed tear only affecting the blank margin. Of this map, Carl Wheat gives high praise, "an impo … [Click Below for Full Description]
