Washington, George; Jared Sparks
American Stationers Company. John B. Russell 1836-1837, Boston. The complete writings of George Washington. Large octavo, 12 volumes, uniformly bound in full contemporary calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, rebacked. Frontispiece of Washington to volumes 1-3; engraved by J.W. Paradise from a painting by J.G. Chapman after a painting by C.W. Peale; frontispiece in volumes 2 and three engraved by A.B. Durand, the first from a painting by Gilbert Stuart; frontispiece in volume 12 of Martha Washington engraved by J. Cheney. Editor Jared Sparks was a noted early American historian and President of Harvard College. Sparks worked as editor of the North American Review and a Unitarian pastor in Baltimore. His most notable work was his Writings of George Washington. An attractive set. George Washington served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797 and was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. Washington served as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War against the British Crown and presided over the 1787 convention that drafted the United States Constitution. An international icon for liberation and nationalism, Washington left a legacy of documentary records throughout his lifetime. Historian Jared Sparks was the first to collect and publish these writings in the 1830's first with Life and Writings of George Washington (1834-1837), and later with The Writings of George Washington Being His Correspondence, Addresses, Messages, and Other Papers, Official and Private beginning in 1931. [TRANSPORTATION] BALDWIN, Capt. John Timins.
At sea: 1835-1836. Journal kept by Captain J.T. Baldwin Madras Artillery during a voyage to India in the year 1835 [&] Original verses written on visiting home after a few years absence; Original verses on visiting Newgate after seven years Transportation; Extracts from the Lady Flora Gazette of Saturday 26th September 1835 etc., autograph manuscript, together 186 pp., 6pp. An important rediscovery: this substantial journal, never before published in any form, provides a remarkable insight into life on board an India-bound vessel called the Lady Flora in 1835. It was written by Captain John Timins Baldwin, an officer in the Royal Artillery returning to his post in the subcontinent, and a literate and keen observer: "What scope," he justly observes at one point, "a voyage to India gives one for the study of character, and how impossible for an individual to conceal theirs from a close observer" (65). The journal was written privately for Baldwin's wife Barbara (née Campbell): she was from the influential Edinburgh family of that name, and was remaining in Scotland with their young children, but would later join him in India. In fact, she outlived him by some 45 years, and would no doubt have treasured this relic of his life and thoughts written while still a relatively young man. One of the most significant aspects of the journal is that it dates from an era when the close association between India and New South Wales was really being cemented, in which light it is fascinating to see Baldwin reverting to the subject of transportation. Far and away the most important, and a g … [Click Below for Full Description]

Back, Captain [George]
Philadelphia: E.L. Carey and A. Hart, 18361837. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo, pp. 4 (ads), viii, 456, with folding map as frontispiece. Bound in later cloth-backed boards with paper spine label (resembling, but not a facsimile of, the original binding). Second American edition, which is apparently identical to the first of 1836. Old tidemark to outer margin of first few leaves, scattered foxing (generally light) throughout, archival repair to verso of map, which is slightly mis-folded; otherwise sound and clean. Back's 1833 expedition was planned to provide assistance to the Second Ross Expedition (which had sailed in the summer of 1829 to seek the Northwest Passage and not been heard from since), but became a scientific venture after it was learned that Ross and his men had returned safely. The party traveled overland from Montreal to Fort Resolution on the Great Slave Lake. Back and five men, including a Native American guide, then proceeded by canoe and portage to seek thesource of the Great Fish River (now the Back River), traversing hundreds of miles of lakes, forests, and treacherous rapids. The narrative includes descriptions of rivers and lakes traversed; land forms, rock types, and plant and animal life; and the difficulties of canoe travel, as well as observations about the native peoples. It is regarded as "one of the finest travel books of the nineteenth century" (Howgego B3). Arctic Bibliography 851; Smith 393.

M. Kenedy, John
John Kenedy, Philadelphia. Small, full leather volume listed as the Stereotype Edition, though both earlier and later editions seem to say this as well. This copy, published by the author in 1836 is rather hard to find with WorldCat locating only 14 copies in libraries. The songs have words only with no musical inscription. Research on the listed singers is somewhat difficult because only last names are given, but many of them can be found, a group of mostly forgotten entertainers. These songs would seem to be what popular music consisted of in the early republic, in urban, English-speaking society. This copy is in quite attractive condition with some edge and corner wear. Corners are rounded, but boards are not showing. There is minor loss at spine ends. Binding is secure with no tears or parting and book is square. Some writing in pencil on front pastedown. Overall the book is about VG-, a solid copy of a book that is hard to find in any condition. ; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 256 pages [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bourrienne, M de Louis Antoinne
London: Richard Bentley, 1836. First edition in English. Octavo, 4 volumes, bound in full contemporary calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, illustrated, engravings throughout. In excellent condition with light rubbing and wear. A very nice set. Though he achieved many things in his career, Bourrienne is best known for drafting the Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, having been close enough to the man for most of the Napoleonic Era to offer people an intimate glimpse of the famous French emperor. Napoleon, of course, needs no real introduction. Napoleon was unquestionably the most influential man of the 19th century, leaving an indelible mark on everything from the strategy and tactics of warfare to the Napoleonic Code that drafted laws across the continent. To defeat Napoleon, the Europeans had to form large coalitions, which would lead to entangling alliances that brought about World War I after Europe was rebuilt following Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna. Napoleon's influence on the United States was just as palpable. To finance his endeavors, he struck a deal with President Thomas Jefferson that became the Louisiana Purchase. It was Napoleonic warfare that was used throughout the Civil War, leading to massive casualties because the weaponry of the 1860s was now more advanced than the tactics of 1815. When Napoleon died at St. Helena, he still engendered fear and distaste among the Europeans, but the man and his legacy were admired and even held in awe and high esteem in the United States.
