[Click Below for Full Description]

- Arch. Anat. Phys., 1836/1. - Berlin, im Verlag von G. Eichler, 1836, 8°, 128 pp., 3 lith. Taf., orig. Broschur; feines und frisches unbeschnittenes Exemplar. First Edition - "Three years after William Beaumont's conjecture (in Experiments and observations on the gastric juice) that gastric juice contained another active ingredient besides hydrochloric acid, Schwann identified this ingredient as the enzyme pepsin. Schwann's paper confirmed the fact, first stated by Prout and later by Beaumont, that the free acid in the stomach is hydrochloric, not lactic as some had claimed". -cf. Norman - Schwann's paper " 'Concerning the Nature of the Digestive Process' was easily the most sophisticated treatment of that subject during his time, and if measured against the background of contemporary concepts and methods available, one of the most penetrating of any time. By an interlocked sequence of incisive questions and carefully controlled experiments Schwann systematically narrowed down the many possibilities one could imagine concerning the nature and action of the 'digestive principle' to those alternatives which were compatible with empirical evidence. When he finished he had not only achieved a discovery later regarded as a landmark, but had reformulated the whole problem of what digestion may be. Whatever standard one applies to Schwann's memoir, whether one judges it by the degree to which it surpassed previous knowledge and conceptions of the digestive process or by its conformity to modern descriptions, his achievement was outstanding. The logic of his thought was precise an … [Click Below for Full Description]

MURPHY. James Cavanagh, (1760-1814)
London, Printed for I. & J. Taylor, (1795) New edition, Library of Fine Arts 1836<br/><br/> ii, 61pp text, (1 p.), 27 engraved plates, including the title and dedication leaf. Folio. Rebound sympathetically conserving the original title label on upper board. New end papers. The architectural publishing firm, Isaac and Josiah Taylor, later Taylor's Architectural Library, was closed in April 1834 upon the death of Josiah Taylor. The stock of the firm was sold at two auctions, held in October 1834 and January 1835. At one of these the copperplates for the present work were purchased by John Williams of the "Library of Fine Arts", who created this edition of the work. He had the text reset by T.H. Drury and arranged to have the plates restruck. The dedication plate and list of the original subscribers to the 1795 edition were redundant, and thus omitted to be replaced by a letterpress dedication to John Soane. Church and Monastery of Santa Maria da Victoria, also known as Batalha was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. It is a World Heritage Site. A highly original, national Gothic style evolved, profoundly influenced by Manueline art. The plates in this book record the details of the building. In 1835, William Beckford published his last work, the travelogue Recollections of an Excursion to the Monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha and this book, which perhaps capatilzed on the publication of Beckford's work, followed in the next year. Murphy, of Irish descent and a talented draftsman, was commissioned … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Landon, Letitia Elizabeth].
Albert Schloss, London. A delightful contradiction: a "practical" almanac, in a wildly impractical, less than thumbnail-size presentation. In addition to its calendrical information, this miniature gem of a volume features seven engraved portraits, each of which is accompanied by poetry from Letitia Elizabeth Landon ("L.E.L."). => At the back are four pages of sheet music ? surely impossible to play from! ? for the Rondo from Balfe's "Maid of Artois." The book's extreme tininess led one contemporary reviewer to conclude that it had been provided by "the Bookseller to all the faeries" (Gentleman's Magazine, Feb. 1837). This is a copy of the second English Bijou Almanac. Schloss's series of miniature almanacs, often given as => gift books, began with the one for 1836 (published in 1835) and ended with that for 1843. Those for 1836?38 did not bear Schloss's name in the title, that was added beginning with the almanac for 1839. "Schloss engaged Benjamin Reese Davies, a specialist in engraved script . . . to engrave the . . . series. His skill and consistency are apparent in both the text and portraits on steel plates" (Bromer & Edison, p. 95). Once the engraving was accomplished the work was transferred to a lithographic stone for actual printing, the whole process being called "transfer lithography" (Bain, p. 8) Binding: Orchid-colored paper, wrappers with gilt-stamped lyre and wreath motif, all edges gilt. Volume housed in a velvet- and silk-lined tan morocco clamshell case with "Bijou" gilt-stamped on its front within a strapwork frame; case with a hook and eye closing mecha … [Click Below for Full Description]

EMPSON, Charles (1794-1861).
London: printed by A.J. Valpy, published for the Author by William Edwards, 1836. Folio (14 x 10 inches). 14 etched plates after Empson with original hand-colour, one engraved plate printed in brown by and after G.B. Sowerby (light toning throughout, some, mostly marginal, spotting). Modern green morocco backed green cloth boards. First edition and a VERY RARE LARGE PAPER COPY with all the plates hand-coloured over an etched base. This copy does not include the first plate mentioned by Abbey which may not be required in this issue. Empson, a print and watercolour dealer in Bath, spent three years travelling the northern part of South America, for the most part in what is now Colombia, from 1824 to 1827. His original drawings of the exotic plants of South America, which he first encountered on that journey, introduce an artist of superb technique and achievement better known through the narratives of his travels in South America. His peregrinations took him from Cienega on the northern coast of Colombia through the central and eastern cordilleras of the Andes to Honda in the south, via the river Magdalena, and east into Venezuela. His recollections of the trip are preserved in his ‘Narratives of South America’, published in London in 1836. "The glorious descriptions of Humboldt had induced many persons who had no other motive beyond that of beholding Nature in all her majesty, to explore these regions so gorgeously clothed in primaeval vegetation, and so abundant in every production interesting to mankind. It was my happiness to associate with many travellers who had establi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHANNING. WILLIAM E(llery).
James Hedderwick & Son. Glasgow. 1836. FIRST BRITISH EDITION. 8vo. (7.1 x 4.4 inches). 172pp, i (publishers advert). A very good, uncut copy in the publishers brown morocco grained cloth with printed paper label to the spine. Several gatherings unopened. A little chipping to the label but overall a very good clean copy of this uncommon First UK edition. --------- Channing (1780-1842) initially held a common American belief about the inferiority of African people and slaves and felt that that once freed, they would need overseers. The overseers (largely former slave masters) were necessary because the slaves would lapse into laziness. Furthermore, he did not join the abolitionist movement because he did not agree with their way of conducting themselves, and he felt that voluntary associations limited a person's autonomy. Therefore, he often chose to remain separate from organisations and reform movements. This middle position characterised his attitude about most questions, although his eloquence and strong influence on the religious world incurred the enmity of many extremists. Channing had an enormous influence over the religious (and social) life of New England, and America, in the nineteenth century. Towards the end of his life Channing embraced immediate abolitionism. His evolving view of abolitionism was fostered by the success of British abolition in the British West Indies in 1834 and the lack of the expected social and economic upheaval in the post-emancipated Caribbean.

Contemporary armorial bookplates of Edward Dixon (possibly related by marriage to the Earls of Berkeley with their naval connections to the Seymours, Waldegraves, Thomas Masterman Hardy, etc.). Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman under Lord Cochrane in 1806 and saw a great deal of service in the Mediterranean, at Walcheren, and during the Burmese War of 1824. He retired from the sea to take up his pen and to produce a series of highly successful naval novels, based largely on his own experiences and observations. He was therefore able to draw from personal experience when he produced Mr. Midshipman Easy, one of his early works which is in some points autobiographical. Mr. Easy is the son of foolish parents who spoiled their offspring. His father, in particular, regards himself as a philosopher, with a firm belief in the "rights of man". As he is a rich gentleman, his belief, which the novel presents as very foolish, is never seriously contradicted. By the time he is a teenager Easy has adopted his father's point of view, to the e … [Click Below for Full Description]
