[American Religion] :
[np.: , 1836]. [np.:. 1836]. Folio, large sheet folded to 7 3/4" x 13 1/4". [1], [2 blank], [1]pp [printed material is on front and rear pages; interior pages blank]. Caption title [as issued]. Several type sizes and fonts. Printed in two columns; image of Screaming Eagle holding a ribbon reading "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" above the text. Signed in type at end, "Hectors, - ST. PETER & ST. JOHN." Old folds [several small splits cost a couple of letters]. Good+. A rare, puzzling imprint located, so far as we have discerned, only at AAS. The Manifesto, written by "the Representatives of the Church of Christ," recounts "the history of the present aspiring and domineering spirit of Christendom," which seeks "the establishment of an ecclesiastical tyranny." The Manifesto declares, "With Thomas Jefferson, that great Apostle of Liberty of '76... we have sworn, upon the Altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." The "four and twenty seats" apparently refers to the Book of Revelations, which places four and twenty Elders on the four and twenty seats. BURTON, Robert.]
Philadelphia: T. Wardle, 1836 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spines in gilt. Spines faded, a few points of wear to spine ends, light rubbing to extremities, foxing to text blocks, spine starting to split vol. 1, a small tear to the top of the front joint vol. 2. A very good pair. First US edition, uncommon in the publisher's cloth. First published in 1621, the title page indicated that this is the "first American [edition], from the thirteenth English edition, corrected." The Anatomy "was one of the most popular books of the seventeenth century. All the learning of the age as well as its humour – and its pedantry – are there. It has something in common with Brant's Ship of Fools, Erasmus's Praise of Folly, and More's Utopia, with Rabelais and Montaigne and like all these it exercised a considerable influence on the thought of the time. Dr Johnson deeply admired it, and Charles Lamb's often and strongly expressed devotion served to rescue the Anatomy from a brief period of oblivion" (PMM 120). Garrison & Morton 4198.1.
