Juliette DROUET (1806-1883). Lettre autographe signée à Victor Hugo. Quatre pages in-8°. 16 novembre (1836). [Click Below for Full Description]

From legend at foot of second plate: Festspiele der Octoberfeste 1835 und 1836, welche unter der Leitung d. Turnlehrer Gruber ausgeführt wurden. Two folding & finely colored lithographed plates. [Munich: ca. 1836]. First editions of two important and rare works by the prominent artist and lithographer of Munich, Gustave Kraus (1804-52). His preferred medium was lithography and his favorite subjects were public occasions such as processions, parades, and ceremonies as well as landscapes of the region and public buildings. The lithographic work of Kraus is ranked amongst the finest of its time. I. This is an extremely rare festival book, depicting the famous Munich Oktoberfest in the early years of the 19th century. "The 1835 Oktoberfest parade with its 24 lithographs is one of Gustav Kraus' finest pieces of work...He first sketched the compositions in pencil and ink before filling them in with watercolors, checking them in situ before transferring them...to stone. Thus, his lithographs are not only an absolutely reliable document of the splendid parade, but also an invaluable source for the history of Bavarian costume and tradition."-(in trans.)-Christine Pressler, Gustav Kraus 1804-1852. Le premier ouvrage est un dictionnaire alphabétique de l amour illustré d une planche érotique repliée en frontispice. E. Walker & Sons [Edward Walker]
New York: E. Walker & Sons, 1836. Broadsheet leaflet (9.5 " x 7.5"). Preserved in a mylar sleeve. In very good condition. Only one other example of this leaflet from the bindery of E. Walker & Son is known (at AAS). It is not to be confused with the digital surrogate at the Archive of America (American Broadsides I:8099). There is a larger version (17" x 15") of which a framed example is currently being offered -- for 10 times the present example -- by one of our distinguished colleagues. It is a remarkable fact that E. Walker's Book Bindery (established 1836) actually burned down on Jan. 23, 1852. By May 1, 1852 a new bindery was opened on the same site, No. 114 Fulton Street. The present leaflet was issued on the occasion of the completion of the new building, and solicits business from the trade, specifically regarding large edition bindings. Special notice is given to their work on the edition bindings for Audubon's Quadrupeds, Audubon's Birds, and Boydell's Shakespeare. Satisfied customers include Dr. Gogswell of the Astor Library, Harper & Brothers, V.G. Audubon, and others. Edward Walker was the author of an interesting publication entitled "The Art of Book-Binding, Its Rise and Progress, including a Descriptive Account of the New York Book-Bindery." It is tantamount to a long advertisement of his firm. On p. 37 we read that "The number of its employes (sic) varies according to circumstances from sixty to a hundred, and sometimes more. So extensive are the facilities of this establishment, that from 800 to 1000 volumes have frequently been bound in a single day.

In 1815 he published Illustrations to English Philology, consisting of a critical examination of Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language and a reply to Dugald Stewart's criticism of Horne Tooke's Diversions of Purley. In 1818 the opening portions of an English lexicon, by Richardson, appeared in the Encyclopædia Metropolitana. In 1834 he issued the prospectus of a New English Dictionary, and the work itself was published by Pickering in parts between January 1835 and the spring of 1837. (FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS). (GERMANY). [SPENCER, EDMUND]
London: Whittaker & Co, 1836. Second Edition. This is a charming, if slightly worn, copy of a 19th century travelogue with two apparently contemporary fore-edge paintings. Although the author is simply listed as "An Englishman Resident in Germany," several sources identify him as Captain Edmund Spencer, who also wrote travelogues on European Turkey and the Western Caucasus. The binder, Thomas Ingalton of Eton, was active in the 1830s and is listed in Ramsden and Spawn & Kinsella. He also appears to have been an artist in other media, with several examples of his work (all landscape etchings of the architecture in and around Eton) in the Royal Collection Trust. The fore-edge scene on volume I depicts the Frankfurt skyline as seen from the banks of the Main River. We see St. Bartholomew's Cathedral and the Eschenheimer Tower among other landmarks. Boats and barges float in the river, and anglers fish on the riverbank. Volume II's painting depicts a street scene in Mainz with a view of the cathedral. Horse-drawn carts roll by and pedestrians stroll along. The paintings are fresh and bright, with crisp, clean lines. The artist, while unknown, was clearly a skilled draughts-person with an eye for architectural rendering. It is an interesting possibility that these paintings may have been done by the binder himself.. 222 x 140 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). Two volumes. Second Edition. Attractive contemporary maroon pebble-grain morocco by Thomas Ingleton of Eton (binder's ticket on front turn-in of volume I), covers in gilt and blind with wide and narrow blind-ruled frame, foliate spr … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Henry Bartlett (March 26, 1809 - September 13, 1854) was a British artist, best known for his numerous steel engravings. Bartletts primary concern was to render "lively impressions of actual sights", as he wrote in the preface to The Nile Boat (London, 1849). Many views contain some ruin or element of the past including many scenes of churches, abbeys, cathedrals and castles, and Nathaniel Parker Willis described Bartlett's talent thus: "Bartlett could select his point of view so as to bring prominently into his sketch the castle or the cathedral, which history or antiquity had allowed". Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines, vignettes, and title. Marbled endpapers; speckled edges.l A detailed monograph combining plant-geography, meteorology and geology. Franz Xaver Unger (1800-1870) is perhaps best known for the synthesis of geology and botany: the description and illustration of fossil plants. This is an early work, most of his paleobotanical work dates from after 1850. This copy is dedicated to Carl von Martius and dealing with all aspects of northern Tirol and includes what may be the first geological map of the region around Kitzbühl. The full colour plate, intended as frontispiece but here bound before the folding maps, is a combination of a view on Kitzbühl and a geological profile. The second part contains the Verzeichniss der im Gebiete von Kitzbühl frei vorkommenden Gewächse.
