John Herapath
Wyld and Son. The Railway Magazine and Annals of Science: Containing Copious Accounts of All Railways at Home and Abroad; Notices of Inventions, and Scientific Discoveries. Vol. I. New Series. John Herapath. Wild & Son. London, 1836. Very rare, very early English railroad journal. The volume apparently collects the ten issues from March, 1836 (No. 1) to December, 1836. 477 pp. & charts and index at rear. The "Contents to Vol. I. New Series" gives a guide to the topics covered in the year's issues: "On the Laying Out of a Railway," "Tunneling, Nuisances of, Effects of," "On Locomotives and the Means of Supplying Them," "Some Curious Experiments on Steam," and the "Pneumatic Railway." The volume also contains 3 maps and 2 plates. Some have suffered tears and separation. However, because Herapath does not record the number of plates, it is difficult to access the completeness of the volume. No institutional stamps; however, there is a paste-down of library rules on the endpaper of the rear board. Only a handful of copies of the first years are listed on Worldcat, but not surprising considering that railroading was a new science and most copies were probably absorbed by scientific and technical institutions. The magazine is a compendium of scientific innovation and consideration, as well as an ongoing analysis of the economic and social impact of this important new mode of national transportation. The copy is essentially disbound and requires a new binding. A rare opportunity to own a cornerstone publication of railroad science.

An autograph letter signed “Bret Harte” to Mr. Bowles concerning Mrs. Harte: “My dear Bowles, We are ruined in the estimation of at least two women, and I fear the damning evidence of our guilt, remains in Springfield. You are probably more hardened than I, being older, but I am entirely crushed. Do you remember that fatal morning when Miss Sallie left me in your charge, and directed you explicitly to look after my things, and supervise generally the transfer of my effects from my room to your carriage? I now that I so understood it, and discharged myself of all responsibility, and thereafter devoted myself to aesthetics and the picturesque Miss Sedgewick, with all the abandonment of a poetic nature unfettered by luggage and untrammeled by forms. But when I got home last night, Mrs. Harte, who has an unpleasant way of going through my luggage like a customs house officer, turned to me with chilling deliberation and said ‘Frank, what have you done with the brush and comb you took with you?’ I pointed triumphantly to the bureau where they lay. Mrs. Harte looked at me a moment, and then said with great naivete ‘you insensate idiot – I mean the nursery brush and comb, which with your usual stupidity you put away as your own. Never mind, it’s the last time you shall every pack your valise alone.’ Now, Bowles, what have you done with Mrs. Hart … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROWLEY, Charlotte (nee Shipley)
Wadi Medyn April 1, 1836. 8vo., 70 lines (approx 400 words), holograph, with integral blank page. An extraordinary letter written on her honeymoon in Egypt by Charlotte Rowley (1811-1871), known as a pathfinder female traveller. The letter is written from Wadi Medani after she and her husband have returned from Sanner, which was the most southerly reach of their journey down the Blue Nile. It commences: "Sail to Sennaar the banks of the river alive with monkeys & green parrot & the river full of crocodiles & hippopotami. Italian medical man said that in Abyssinia they make children more useful than in any other country & turn them into medicine for when the mother has had a bad labour, or does not recover her strength quickly the new born infant is boiled down & the broth drank by its mother". She then continues by saying how many crocodiles there are in the river and how the natives catch them. "The natives have a dread of their picture being taken, as they firmly believe that once having got that I can call the original to England whenever I please." Charlotte was an accomplished artist. The letter continues with observations on eye glasses, the natives wonder at "Lucifers" and the extraordinary number of children that some of the native women have. "Our evenings are spent in sitting out of doors drinking coffee & talking about our English customs to a crowd of Turks & Arabs". She ends the letter with comments on the extraordinary heat they encountered, and that the nails of their shoes become so hot they cannot wear them. Charlotte Rowley is allegedly the first white wom … [Click Below for Full Description]

Düsseldorf, Arnz; Bonn, Cohen, 1836-1863. 4to (315 x 245mm). 7 parts bound in 3 volumes. With 352 partly hand-coloured lithographed plates and explanatory text. Contemporary half calf, spines in 3 compartments with gilt lettering. First and only edition. A foundation work on succulents, describing many South African species. Prince Joseph Maria von Salm-Reifferscheid-Dyck (1773-1861) was born at Castle Dyck near Düsseldorf. He was closely associated with the French botanists and botanical artists of the Napoleonic period. "His friendship for Redouté, the painter, who illustrated de Candolle's 'Plantarum Succulentarum Historia' led Salm-Dyck to devote himself thence-forward to the study of succulent plants. He took lessons in drawing and painting from his friend, and began to develop a living collection of succulents at Dyck.' (Curtis Botanical Magazine Dedications p. 67). Soon his collection of living succulent plants at Schloss Dyck became famous throughout Europe and was unrivalled at his time. "Das Buch blieb, wie gesagt, durch den Tod des Autors unvollständig, so dass der sicher beabsichtigte General-Index nicht erschienen ist. Die 'Monographia', seit langem vergriffen, ist, da die Nachfrage immer grösser wurde, rapide im Preis steigend, zumal vollständige Exemplare. geradezu verschwunden sind."(Junk 'Rara' p. 109). William T. Stearn published an annotated index to the work. The excellent plates are hand-coloured lithographs of drawings by the author and are always partly coloured. Bookplate and shelf marks of Richmond College to front pastedown. Wear to head of spine, sticker residue at base, markings to cloth, extremities bumped, pages unopened. A good copy. Leuven, 1836. Beneden, Pierre-Joseph van (1809-94). Cours de zoologie et d'anatomie comparée. Unpublished manuscript notebook in the hand of Beneden's student Amand Proost. 530, [64], [86], [34]pp. (irregularly numbered; last 184 pages unnumbered), plus a few inserted leaves. Louvain [Leuven], 1836-39. 192 x 161 mm. Quarter cloth, marbled boards ca. 1836, rubbed, some edgewear, tear in lower portion of spine, one leaf loose. Small piece torn from margin of pp. 77/78 with slight loss of text, edges a bit frayed, but overall good to very good. 20th century bookplate of M. A Schockaert on rear free endpaper. Remarkably long and detailed student notebook documenting some of the first zoology and comparative anatomy courses taught by Pierre-Joseph van Beneden, a distinguished Belgian zoologist and paleontologist who made significant contributions to the biological sciences. The notebook provides unique insight into Beneden's approach to natural history at the beginning of his career, when he had published only a handful of scientific papers. It also sheds light on the methods used for teaching the sciences in mid-19th-century Europe. Beneden earned a medical degree at the state university in Leuven (Belgium) and studied zoology under Georges Cuvier in Paris. In 1836 he was appointed professor of zoology at Leuven's newly founded Catholic University, where he remained until his death in 1894. He is best known for his extensive work in the field of parasitology, including his introduction of two key biological/ecological concepts: Commensalism, describing a relationship between … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Pennsylvania Textiles) Beale, John
York, PA: 1799-1836. 182 pp plus blanks, in ink. Folio (327 x 195 mm). A manuscript ledger covering 38 years of the work of York, Pennsylvania weaver John Beale, an excellent account of an American cottage industry in the early 19th century. Details client names, types of cloth used, and amounts paid, with the bulk of the entries dating from 1820s and 1830s. Beale worked with a wide variety of materials, including check, shirting, tow, tick, blanket, table linen, flannel, linsy, flax, striping, huckaback, sheeting, etc. The first two pages are affair bonds involving John Beale and three other men, possibly a record of monies borrowed by Beale to start his business. Though Pennsylvania led the U.S. in textile production at the time, the industry was centered around Philadelphia and Germantown, making Beale's business an outlier. The ledger also includes Beale's overhead and personal expenses, including rent, tobacco, shoes, powder and shot. Contemporary sheep, titled in manuscript "John Beale's Book 1811" on upper board. Spine chipped, covers worn, internally very good.
