1836. Up for auction is a copy of the very rare monthly publication of the American Anti-Slavery Society by R.G. Williams: "Human Rights. Our Object is Liberty for All; Gained by Moral Power, and Regulated by Impartial Laws" New York, March 1836, (Vol. 1 No. 9). This publication began in 1835 and ended with the February 1839 issue, and was an important part of the abolitionist movement. Articles include "Slavery in the District of Columbia," "Alexandria and New-Orleans Packets," "West India Emancipation" and LaFayette's Opinion of Slavery" with others. As per the pictures: missing the bottom corners, nick out of the spine margin, discolored on lower portion, stains and small holes, but still a rare part of our country's history that is rarely seen. De Toqueville, Alexis
London: Saunders & Otley, 1836. Second edition in English. Two octavo volumes (pages: 207 x 130 mm) collating xliv, 333; viii, 462: complete, including the folding map to the front of volume 1. Contemporary 3/4 calf over marbled boards, marbled end papers, and page edges, lacking spine labels, gilt spine compartments. Minor wear at the extremities of the binding. Bookplate of Sam A. Lewisohn on the front paste-downs, otherwise a fine copy internally, in a handsome contemporary binding. The second edition in English of Part I, which was originally released in French and English a year earlier in 1835. Complete as issued, Part II of Democracy in America would not appear in first edition in the Paris or London imprints until 4 years later, in 1840. De Tocqueville, a French aristocrat, visited America between 1831 and 1832, ostensibly to study the penal system, although his interest was considerably broader. It seems logical that France would look to America as a beacon of hope for a successful democracy. After France embraced the goals of equality and democracy in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution, it found itself first in a dictatorship under Napoleon and then in one constitutional monarchy after another during the years following. De Tocqueville's astute observation of several aspects of American society and culture provides an invaluable lens of foreign perspective on our young nation's political growth. Democracy in America was an immediate and sustained success. Almost from the beginning it enjoyed the reputation of being the most acute and perceptive discussion … [Click Below for Full Description]

Strauss, David Friedrich
Osiander 1835, Tübingen, 1836. 2 Bde. gr.8°. XVI, 731, (1); XII, 750, (2) S. Einfache Original-Pappbände d. Zt. (Einbände stärker berieben und bestossen, Besitzerst. a. Titel, Buchblöcke gut). David Friedrich Strauß (* 27. Januar 1808 in Ludwigsburg; + 8. [Click Below for Full Description]

KAWAHARA, Keiga
1836. Numerous full-page & double-page color-printed woodblock illus. Two vols. in four. Large 8vo, orig. yellow patterned semi-stiff wrappers, orig. woodblock title slips on upper covers, old stitching. Osaka: Maekawa Zenbe, [after 1836].A very fine and fresh copy of this famous book; this is the first edition to contain color illustrations (the first edition, which had only black-and-white woodcuts, appeared in 1836). Kawahara (1786-1860), was a late Edo painter who was given permission to document local life for the Dutch trading house in Dejima. He was, in fact, one of the few Japanese permitted to enter the Nagasaki island when it was the sole location of Japan's trade with the West; Kawahara worked there as a painter from 1811 to 1842.He became a close associate of Philipp Franz von Siebold, the resident physician and natural historian at Dejima, who collected over 1000 native Japanese plants. At the request of von Siebold, Kawahara drew and painted numerous plants the German had collected, and while doing so also learned Western-style artistic techniques. The presentation and description of each botanical specimen is a fusion of Japanese and Western observation and illustration: we learn the English and Japanese names, when the flower blossoms, medicinal uses, views of the flowers and fruits, colors are described using Japanese terms, etc. The illustrations in von Siebold's Flora Japonica were largely taken from those painted by Kawahara. This is a very handsomely illustrated book using a number of woodblock impressions for each illustration. Some of the illus … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original green cloth, boards with borders blocked in blind, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt; pp. xii, 398, [2, erratum], 8 (publisher's catalogue dated April 1842); tinted lithographic frontispiece by Day & Haghe after L.W. In 1836, the Governor of India directed Burnes to undertake a mission to Kabul (Cabool) with the intention of opening the region to commercial concerns and to persuade the British to support Dost Mohammed's claim over Peshwar. The present work relates Burnes' experiences with the mission and offers reasons for its failure. The narrative does not relate the aftermath of the mission: Burnes returned to Kabul in 1839 with British troops and seized the city; in 1841 Burnes was murdered and the British troops, with 12,000 followers, were forced to retreat to India, during which the entire column was destroyed, bar a handful of surviv … [Click Below for Full Description]

KAWAHARA, Keiga
1836. Numerous full-page & double-page color-printed woodblock illus. Two vols. in four. Large 8vo, orig. yellow patterned semi-stiff wrappers, orig. woodblock title slips on upper covers, old stitching. Osaka: Maekawa Zenbe, [after 1836]. A very fine and fresh copy of this famous book; this is the first edition to contain color illustrations (the first edition, which had only black-and-white woodcuts, appeared in 1836). Kawahara (1786-1860), was a late Edo painter who was given permission to document local life for the Dutch trading house in Dejima. He was, in fact, one of the few Japanese permitted to enter the Nagasaki island when it was the sole location of Japan's trade with the West; Kawahara worked there as a painter from 1811 to 1842. He became a close associate of Philipp Franz von Siebold, the resident physician and natural historian at Dejima, who collected over 1000 native Japanese plants. Some of the illustrati … [Click Below for Full Description]
