Autograph letter signed offering a translation from the Arabic of El Suyuti's History of the Khalifs. London, between 1836 and 1843.

1836. Two and a half handwritten sides on 2 leaves. Signed "your most obedient humble servant Dr. Sprenger", and concerning various Arabic manuscripts which Sprenger is considering translating. The letter dates from Sprenger's relatively brief time in London (1836-43), and thus predates any of his published works. He decides that Ibn Kourdadbeh's 'Oriental Geography' (the earliest surviving Arabic book on administrative geography) is unsuitable as he can only locate one MS copy. Instead, he offers to produce a translation of Suyuti's famous 'History of the Caliphs', which he notes has been accounted the best of such histories by the Arab encylopaedist Haji Khalfa. Sprenger transcribes several names from English into Arabic for the benefit of his correspondent. - A well-preserved and early letter reflecting Sprenger's outstanding command of Arabic sources. The Austrian-born Sprenger became one of the most noted orientalists of the 19th century, producing a comprehensive 'Life of Mohammad from Original Sources' in 1851.

Collection consists of a 5"x 12" strip of 12 attached printed monthly coupons for the 12 months of 1837, each with what is presumably Lyons account nr (46) and with his name (Jacob Juda Lyons) and amount of contribution filled in, and a signature of of the treasurer at the bottom. Also present is a separate coupon for February 1836, larger in size (8"x3") but with the same basic content, as well as a larger (7.5"x6") certificate dated 5597 (1837) from the AARME-KAS der Nederlandsche Israelitische Hoofd-Sijnagoge, [Charity Bureau of the Dutch Jewish Main Synagogue] in Suriname, documenting Lyons' contribution of 32.50 Guilders for what appears to be his membership (?) in the Synagogue as well as his offering. Half calf 12mo, 312pp. Dark brown smooth calf with marbled boards, marbled edges. In good condition. Front board is detached, otherwise very good. Rubbing to the joints and boards, including occasional small losses to the leather or marbled papers. A slight bloating to the volume, as from being stored in a basement, but nothing extreme. A page of remarks, reprinted below, appear opposite the title page, noting the previous owner's association with the author. "During the years 1826-27-28, I lodged in Lothian Stree, Edin: & saw a good deal of Mr. Weston, a very intelligent & highly respected bookseller in that street. Just before I left Edin. after taking my (segue?) of M. D. in 1828m he told me that he was about to emigrate. My surprise, therefore, was great when I found him in the old shop during my visit to Edin, with my wife, in 1837. This book will explain his apparent inconsistency. -Henry Yates Whytehead, M. D." Whytehead went on to become a notable doctor. His signature appears on the front endpaper, but aside from his introduction, the contents remain bright, clean and unmarked. A rare volume which has not appeared at auction since 1982.

Manuscript - Two Journals with Cloth Dyeing Recipes with Rare Organically Dyed Colour Samples

Germany, 1836. Germany, 1836-1838. Two manuscript journals of recipes and instructions for dyeing textiles by organic means, featuring tipped-in coloured thread and yarn swatches, compiled by a German cloth dyer named Ludwig Arnold, during the European Industrial Revolution. 2 vols. 8vo. Approximately 160 pages combined, one of the volumes with author's signature to front endpaper. Additional miscellanea notes loosely placed within the volumes; occasional later annotations also made. All text is in German. Small 8vo. volumes with manuscript labels to front of both. Wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition. Featuring 11 unique coloured thread samples tipped into the 1838 volume, the pre-synthetic treatment and of cotton and other natural fibres is very specifically unveiled in this volume. At the time of its making, these journals would have been carefully guarded from others in the highly competitive market. With numerous recipes and profuse annotations, the nineteenth century cloth dyer, or textile colorist, has recipes for dyeing soft and vibrant colours, the latter coming more into vogue during this period. Recipes include royal blue, various shades of green and even white, possibly to brighten natural cotton. Samples include three unique shades of green, which was popular at the time, blue, amber, reddish browns, and most advanced for the period - a peach or flesh hew and a mauve. The writer seems to have travelled on the continent for his profession, Regensburg and Leiden, appearing in his notes. The first page of this work makes reference to Placide-Auguste Le Pileur d'Apligny (died 1820), an eighteenth century specialist in cloth dyeing, an early pastellist, and the author of at least two books on the subjects of creating colorants and dyeing cotton, published in 1773 and 1779. The second volume names a Carl Schmidt, and others. Two rare examples of pioneering chemical dyes created in Germany are seen in this volume. They are the Prussian Blue, created in 1810, and the arsenic-based bright green which was created in the early 1830s. These were not wholly synthetic like the coal-tar alanine derivatives which came into existence fortuitously in 1856 in England. The mention of Carmoisine and Chromogrün, synthetic red and green dyes, together with the mauveine thread sample, reveal that Arnold remained active in his trade well into the 1850s, and made the transition into chemical dyeing to keep up with the luxuriant and exacting demands of cloth making. [Mauveine, also known as aniline purple and Perkin's mauve, was the first synthetic organic chemical dye, discovered serendipitously in 1856 by William Henry Perkin.] Prior to 1856, all textile dyes were derived from natural sources such as plants, insects, and minerals. Principal organic dyes were indigo blue made from plants, kermes derived from dried insect bodies, madder which was also red but made from vegetables, brown made with walnut roots and shells, yellow made from willow trees and such. The first human-made organic aniline dye, mauveine, was discovered serendipitously by William Henry Perkin in 1856, the result of a failed attempt at the total synthesis of quinine. The first aniline dye was a manmade re-creation of the coloring agent in the madder root, which produced numerous shades of red. Other aniline dyes followed, such as fuchsine, safranine, and induline. In 1858 a synthetic red dye called magenta or fuchsine was patented in France, leading the way for numerous dye patents until the end of the century. A variety of aniline dye-colored fabrics were shown at the 1862 London International Exhibition. The textiles were displayed next to the sticky black coal tar waste from which the dyes were derived. Textiles were the dominant industry of the European Industrial Revolution in terms of employment, value of output and capital invested; the textile industry was also the first to use modern production methods. After 1860, the primary focus of chemical (synthetic) innovation was in dyestuffs, Germany being the world's industry leader. Aspiring chemists flocked to German universities from 1860 to 1914 era to learn the latest techniques. Even British scientists hired German-trained chemists. . Very Good.

Attractive copy.Very scarce.Sitwell, Blunt & Synge Great Flower Books, p.50; Nissen 178; B. D. Arpad Plesch Mille et un livres botaniques, p.144; Jackson Guide to the Literature of Botany, p.117 This magnificent work on the flora of the East Indies is based primarily on Blume's own botanizing in Java. He was employed there a senior doctor attached to the Dutch East India Company and in later years became a professor of botany and director of the state botanical collections at Leyden. In this work he saw himself as continuing the work of George Eberhard Rumph, and it is as an acknowledgement of his debt to that pioneer that he titled his own great work Rumphia. He also published two other works on the flora of the East Indies, Flora Javae, 3 vols, 1828-51, and Collection des Orchidées .. de 'Archipel Indien.., 1858-59. Neither of these, while splendid works, is either as rare or as magnificent as Rumphia, accurately described by B. D. Jackson as "a truly splendid work".

Written in a small, but legible hand. Very good. An engaging account of travels along the north coast of Spain in the Basque country during the First Carlist War, the civil war fought between the conservative followers of Carlos V and the liberal defenders of the succession of the infant Isabel II between 1833 and 1840. The Basque region was a Carlist stronghold, and Townsend's account includes descriptions of encounters with the forces supporting Carlos, as well as being a narrative of the journey around the region, from Bayonne to Santander. The diary was composed in three separate parts from different locations in the Basque region in January and February of 1836, and is addressed to his sister. Isaiah Townsend, Jr., descended from a prestigious New York family that included Solomon Townsend, industrialist and state politician after the Revolution, and his father Isaiah Sr., a prominent Albany merchant. On a prior Grand Tour of Europe in 1831 and 1832, he met David Baillie Warden, author of BIBLIOTHECA AMERICANA, with whom he would become great friends and whose library Townsend would broker to the New York State Library in 1844. A well-written travel diary by a notable New Yorker and close acquaintance to an important American bibliophile, filled with fascinating detail about the Basque area and the events of the day.

1836. 2 text vols. (8vo) and 2 plate vols. (large folio). (2), 491, (1), (4) pp. 788, (6) pp. text. With engraved portrait of Segato as frontispiece in the first text volume and the plate volumes with 160 engraved and aquatint plates (7 double-page), including 51 tinted and/or coloured by a contemporary hand; many plates contain multiple illustrations, making 309 illustrations in total. Contemporary green (text vols.) and brown (plates vols.) half morocco, sewn on 3 recessed cords (text vols.) and 4 tapes (plates vols.), "agate" chemical marbled sides. First edition of a beautiful series of illustrations of Egypt and classical Egyptian monuments, with the accompanying text volumes giving detailed information on each illustration. The illustrations show maps, costumes and views of both ancient and modern Egypt. The scientist and Egyptologist Girolamo Segato (1792-1836) began working on a new description and depiction of Egypt, selecting illustrations from the works of Denon, Grau and Rosellini, and also including his own original drawings. After his premature death his collaborator Domenico Valeriani finished the work and provided the accompanying texts. - Segato is best known for his technique similar to mummification, this technique of petrification remains mysterious, despite numerous studies and attempts to imitate, as he destroyed all his documentation before his death. - The text and plates volumes with marginal foxing throughout, minor except in the preliminary leaves. Otherwise in good condition. The binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, damage to the upper right corner of the first plates volume, resulting in a stain on the front endpapers, and the upper half of the sides on the second plate volume faded, otherwise good and structurally sound.

4 autograph letters signed. Göttingen, 1836 to 1849.

1836. 25 Jan. 1836. 2 pp. Large 4to. - 27 Feb. 1839. 2 pp. Large 4to. - 28 Dec. 1841. 3½ pp. 8vo. - 6 Jan. 1849. 3 pp. Large 4to (altogether 10½ pp.). All written on bifolia; the first two letters bear seals with the autograph address on the reverse of the counter-leaf. Collection of four long, unpublished letters spanning more than a decade, all to the Berlin physicist and geologist Georg Adolf Erman (1806-77), who had just returned from a long voyage around the world and was in the process of publishing his findings ("Reise um die Welt durch Nordasien und die beiden Oceane", 5 vols. of history [1833-42] and 2 vols. of physics [1835-41, with atlas]). Gauss was able to draw on Erman's empirical observations about earth's magnetic field. All four letters begin with thanks for gifts sent by Erman, then develop into extensive scientific discussions which even touch upon Gauss's thermogalvanic experiments. Also, Gauss mentions his attempts to obtain books of Russian fiction. - In 1836 Gauss thanks Erman for presenting him with the 2nd part of his "Reise um die Erde" ("Ortsbestimmungen und Declinationsbeobachtungen auf dem festen Lande"): "This work contains a great wealth of facts. I am particularly interested in your magnetic observations and therefore am glad that you decided to include in this early volume your compass declinations with their results. These, in connection with other observations, will serve to supply the gap left by Barlow's map of declinations [...] But now I dearly look forward to the publication of the second part which is to contain the intensities and inclination readings. Hopefully we will then soon possess a general map for the horizontal intensity, which is devoutly to be wished. Indeed, as things stand now, the entire intensity in most cases is to be conceived merely as a unit of calculation at which one cannot directly arrive with any degree of precision, but which is a mere function of immediately observable elements, such as one rarely will find together in a single place, and even more rarely with the same degree of reliability; and, even more importantly, there are precious few occasions on which the entire intensity will be of any use at all; what is really needed are those very separate elements themselves. To arrange the three coordinates in such a fashion that one of them represents the whole intensity would seem to me, considering the present state of affairs, like wanting to draw up a star index in longitude and latitude only, omitting right ascension and declination. Indeed, at close examination even this comparison proves misleading, as an astronomer ultimately needs latitudes and longitudes for planets and comets so as to establish a general theory, whereas to establish a general theory of the geomagnetic field deserving of the name it is indispensable to disassemble the whole intensity back into its components. To be sure, this statement, which you must not take as an off-handed remark but rather as the result of long and thorough deliberation, cannot possibly be explained in a letter, but this much I can add: that I am fully satisfied as to the method by which the establishment of an exhausting General Theory is to be attacked [...] You may be interested to learn that our recent thermogalvanic experiments have already succeeded in so amplifying an electric current that it is capable of setting even the 25 pound rods in violent motion after passing through a wire of a mile's length [...]". - In 1839 Gauss thanks for a "postcard from Kamchatka" and for the "full communication of Erman's declination readings": "I will be most happy soon to receive also the corrected data of your intensities, although there is no hurry about that. I am merely making mention of a few of your observations in an article intended for the 3rd part of the Findings of the Magnetic Society, the first sheet of which is now in the press. Should your corrected calculations for these 16 locations [followed by a table of 16 cities, including St Petersburg, Kazan, Moscow, San Francisco, and Rio de Janeiro] have yielded intensity readings departing from those published by Major Sabine, I would be able to include these changes in the proofs of the said article [...] According to the most recent news I received from England, our hopes that the government there might do something splendid for the study of the geomagnetic field have suffered a severe blow; but this is not for want of the scholars' diligence, and no blame can be attached to them if the government fails to act [...]". - In late 1841 Gauss thanks for the gift of the 2nd volume of "Reise um die Erde" ("Inclinationen und Intensitäten, Declinationsbeobachtungen auf der See. Periodische Declinationsveränderungen"): "Regarding your observations I can only agree with Sabine's judgment that they contain the most substantial and valuable contribution to the knowledge of magnetism ever made by anybody. It gives me pleasure to see that the new reduction of intensity readings for Tahiti differs considerably from the earlier one, approaching that of Fitz Roy, and nearly duplicating that of Belcher. The large difference, according to Sabine, is mainly due to local interferences [...] I am much pleased with your plans for a journal aiming at acquainting us with Russia's literary productions, the more so because I myself during the past year or two have begun to study the Russian language and find this occupation most agreeable entertainment. The only thing that rather spoils this hobby for me is the difficulty in obtaining Russian books [...] However, l'Appetit vient en mangeant, and in particular I should like to have more in the way of belles lettres. My fiction department so far is limited to Krylov's Fables, a few volumes of Pushkin, and the complete collection of the writings of your Yakutian friend Bestuyev-Martinsky. All my endeavors to obtain something through the German booksellers have been in vain; a single shop did not refuse me outright, but demanded, apart from other onerous conditions (such as that one must accept the shipment regardless of when it arrives, and whatever the charge), the absolutely precise titles of the books ordered [...]". - In 1849 Gauss thanks Erman for sending him various works, including the "3rd volume of the historical section of your travel account", and criticises an article that appeared in the "Report of the British Association for the Advancement of Science": "Observations all made from points upon or near a single line encircling the earth are quite as hopeless for such a purpose as would be the attempt to determine all the lunar elements and equations from the observations of a single week, even if they were made continuously from a hundred observatories. One might go even further and say that, to a degree, the observation data must not only encompass most of the earth's surface, but must also be more or less evenly distributed across the same [...] Altogether, the correction of my constants will certainly prove a tough nut to crack (for posterity), one that will turn out to be harder than the teeth of many a coming scientist [...]". - Clean and well-preserved throughout. Three letters are written in neat Latin handwriting, while that of 1841 is in German script, written somewhat overly carefully at first, then becoming more and more fluent and finally descending into a rather loose style.
