The History of Texas; or, the Emigrant's, Farmer's, and Politician's Guide to the Character, Climate, Soil, and Productions of that Country: Geographically Arranged From Personal Observations and Experiences

Cincinnati: Stereotyped and Published by J.A. James & Co.. 1836. First. First edition. 12mo. 336pp. Lacks the folding map. Original muslin cloth with remnant of printed paper spine label. A couple of contemporary owner's name and in initials, small crease and modest dampstain tidemark on titlepage, spine label quite tanned and moderately chipped, scattered foxing in text, bottom 1" of cloth lacking at foot, still a sound and presentable good copy. "Conditions just prior to the Revolution described by an actual observer" - Howes 48. Apparently this copy made the rounds: one of the owner's inscriptions is particularly interesting: "Samuel Haggard pd. on[e] dollar". One Squire Haggard, the son of Samuel Haggard of Bedford County, Tennessee, served in the Army of the Republic of Texas in 1836-7 during its war for independence with Mexico. This copy also bears the contemporary penciled initials "F.Q. $1.25" and the contemporary penciled name "Joseph Sharp" (a Joseph Sharp also served in the Army of the Republic of Texas). Important contemporary history of Texas, lacking the map, as often. .

Narrative of the Arctic Land Expedition

London, John Murray, , 1836. to the Mouth of the Great Fish River, and Along the Shores of the Arctic Ocean, In the Years 1833, 1834, and 1835. Octavo. An ex-library copy, bookplate to front pastedown, small stamp verso of title, gilt ink accession number to the spine only, neatly recased in the original brown diapered cloth, new endpapers, title gilt to spine within gilt panel. Lithographic frontispiece and 15 other plates, folding map at the rear, tables to the text. Plates somewhat browned, map torn without loss, a little shaken, cloth slightly rubbed and sunned at the spine, a very good copy. First edition. Back had previously gained considerable experience as an arctic explorer through his participation in the abortive Buchan expedition and Franklin's two overland expeditions. Back was "one of the first competent artists to penetrate into the Canadian Arctic"; the many water-colours and drawings which he produced and which enhance his narratives and those of Franklin "are now considered an invaluable record of early northern history" [DCB]. Although Back was highly valued by the British Admiralty, he was not a popular personality and he developed a fairly controversial reputation as a dandy, womaniser and hopeless egocentric. The privately financed, government-assisted expedition described in this narrative was undertaken in 1833, for the purpose of aiding members of the Second Ross expedition, from whom no one had heard since 1828. They were also to conduct scientific investigations and a geographical survey of an unknown section of arctic coast. They travelled overland from Montreal to Slave River and Great Slave Lake, and descended the Thleweechodozeth or Great Fish River (later renamed the Black River) to the arctic coast, thence along Chanttrey Inlet to Ogle Point. "The ice prevented Back's proposed survey of the coast, and after again wintering at Fort Reliance he reached La Chêne, the Hudson Bay station where he had started over two years before, in August 1835, having travelled 7500 miles, including 1200 of discovery. Besides his discovery of a river over 440 miles long, he had made important observations of the Aurora Borealis, and had given the name of Montreal to an island afterwards sadly familiar in connection with the fate of Franklin. In September 1835 Back reached England, and received a hero's welcome. He was awarded the Royal Geographical Society's gold medal, and was promoted by the Admiralty to the rank of captain on 30 September 1835, by order in council—an honour that no other officer in the navy had received except William IV." [ODNB] "... now regarded as one of the finest travel books of the nineteenth century." [Howgego]

Quanren juhuo [The perfect man's model]

Singapore:  Jianxia shuyuan cangban. 1836. "8vo (23.5 cm.), pp. [62] (i.e. title page plus five sections, each with separate pagination: 6, 5, 6, 6, 7 double-sided leaves, for a total of 60 pages); xylographically printed; title page printed on yellow paper; original plain paper wrappers; fine. With several holograph corrections in the text, possibly authorial. A religious tract, translated roughly as ""The perfect man?s model....treatise on the teachings of the Holy Scripture, in 5 books, on unfeigned virtue, spiritual instruction, the Saviour, explanation of the law, theory of prayer, and the doctrine of Jesus true and self-evident"" by a Protestant missionary, Karl Gutzlaff, a fascinating character, typical of the sort of opportunist who clustered around the opium business in the old China Trade. In the 1830s he traveled as a translator on a British opium sailing vessel, known as a ""country ship"" illegally selling opium for Jardine, Matheson & Co. down the coast of China. Gutzlaff justified his complicity with the rationalization that the journey would be a good opportunity to preach the gospel and distribute religious tracts printed in Chinese. His moral flaws aside, Gutzlaff was a smart and lucid observer whose writings offer excellent detail about China and the China Trade in the days leading up to the first opium war. In his later days he oped a school for native Chinese missionaries, several of whom turned out to be opium addicts who used their missionary cover and funding for illicit purposes. The fraud exposed, Gutzlaff died a ruined man. In his 25 years in the field, Gutzlaff served in Java, Singapore, Bangkok, Macau and Hong Kong.  He worked with Medhurst, Bridgman and Morrison on the 1840 Chinese Bible, served as interpreter on Jardine's opium smuggling coasters, and assisted in the negotiations ending the First Opium War.. OCLC locates only the copy at the Singapore National Library."

Ascent to the Summit of Mont Blanc in 1834

      - 1836 William Blackwood & Sons, Edinburgh, 2nd, 8vo, pp.ii, 119, color frontis w/ tissue guard, color lithograph w/ tissue guard, folding panorama, uncut, green cloth; inscribed ‘Barry’s Ascent of Mont Blanc was the 18th and is so recorded by C. E. Matthew’s in "Annals of Mt. Blanc" J. M. T.’, boards w/ spine cracked, both covers separated, AAC, Thorington & AAC/Thorington bookplates, 6 early clippings from catalogues pasted to front endpaper, 2 loose newspaper clippings (describing an ascent, 1890?), frontis bound facing p.25, good. Barry was accompanied by six guides when he made, according to his calculations, the 16th ascent (20th person not counting guides) of Mont Blanc. Meckly credits him with the 17th and Perret with the 21st ascent. Barry’s account of his ascent was republished in 1836 as a series of two lectures which vastly expanded the text of the first edition by threefold. This 2nd edition also included a very nice folding panorama of Mont Blanc as well as color versions of the two lithographs provided in the first edition. Pasted in the back is a TLS (dated 1939) from Thos. Rowatt, Director of the Royal Scottish Museum, to Thorington relating the destruction of various models. Thorington, James Monroe (1894 – 1989) – AAC President (1941-43), Honorary Member (1949), member Alpine Club (honorary), Alpine Club of Canada (honorary), Deutschen und Österreichischen Alpenverein, Club Alpin Francais, Schweizer Alpen-Club, and the Royal Geographical Society. Thorington was a member of the AAC for 64 years and editor of the AAJ for 12 years. Under Thorington, the Club became "the publisher of last resort" for mountaineers, ensuring that information was published which would otherwise not see the light of day. Thorington was perhaps the ultimate scholar of alpinism for the Club and involved in producing a long series of guide books. He spent many years climbing in the Canadian Northwest, with over 50 ascents, the Alps, England, Norway, Lapland, and Sicily. Mount Thorington, in the Purcell Range, bears his name. Thorington was the author of ‘The Glittering Mountains of Canada’ (1925), ‘Mont Blanc Sideshow’ (1934), ‘A Survey of Early American Ascents In the Alps In the Nineteenth Century’ (1943), ‘The Purcell Range of British Columbia’ (1946), translator and editor of Kain’s ‘Where the Clouds Can Go’ (1935), as well as numerous articles. Very few members gave so much of themselves to the Club. This book is from the collection of the American Alpine Club Library. Proceeds from the sale of this book go to benefit the Library.       . (Würzburg) 3 1/4 Seiten gr.-folio. Schwach fleckig, kleine Randeinrisse..

The work was published in 20 parts and is one of the greatest entomological rarities. Horn & Schenkling call for 454. Our copy lacks 18 plates, of which 1 in the first volume, 4 in the second, and 13 in the 4th. There is no printed title to vols. 4 and 5, the indices of these volumes are in typewriting. No index and title was published for the final part as this was never finished. A few explanatory leaves in old typewriting./The plates are lithographed and finely handcoloured, very much in the style of Jacob Sturm, with the same attention to minute details. Jonas David Labram (1785-1852) was a Swiss botanical artist at Basel. Labram is better known for the illustrations he made for Hegetschweiler's 'Sammlung von Schweizer Pflanzen' & 'Sammlung von Zierpfanzen'. Copies however of his insects of Switzerland, which remained unfinished, are so rare that we have sold only one other copy during the last decades. In the course of years Donald Mac Gillavry, well-known Dutch collector of fine entomological books, tried to complete this copy.//Provenance: Bookplate of Donald Mac Gillavry///Nissen ZBI, 2336; Horn & Schenkling 12581.

Important contemporary history of Texas, lacking the map, as often. .

The Decision of the Three Judges of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, pronounced seriatim Monday, 11th of April, 1836, on the Applicability of the Marriage Act of England to this Colony; with a report of the case, and a review of the arguments.

      - Sydney, printed by William Jones 1836. Octavo unbound as issued (an early if not original strip of paper down the spine); [2],40pp (last blank), [1] (blank). Title and last blank dusty. Inscribed and signed by Dillon - then a solicitor to the Supreme Court - to John Gurner who arrived in Sydney in 1817 as Barron Field's clerk, became the chief clerk, and later a commissioner of the Supreme Court. One of the earliest authoritive attacks on legal judgments published in the colony - and worthy of notice as the case hinged upon the concept of legal independence from Great Britain. Ferguson (2116) appends an uncommonly long note indicating that he at least found it of interest and import ('important case' are his words). A John Maloney was convicted of bigamy but made representation that as he had first married after, and not in accordance with, the passing of the Marriage Act then his first marriage was invalid. The Chief Justice (Forbes) and Justice Dowling determined the Marriage Act had no application in New South Wales and found him guilty; Justice Burton disagreed as does Dillon in this pamphlet. He has found himself unable to merely report the case without comment as this decision now left the colony with 'no law prevailing here as to marriage'. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

"Cours sur la génération, l'ovologie et l'embryologie, fait au Muséum d'histoire naturelle en 1836 … recueilli et publié par M. Deschamps."

Paris: "Librairie médicale de Trinquart, Rue de L'École de Médecine, 9,". 1836. "First edition, 4to, pp. [4], 191, [1] errata; 10 lithograph plates at the back, 4 folding; 2 folding plates with short tears, another with a longer tear (but no loss in any instance); original printed gray paper-covered boards (publisher's ads on back cover), edges rubbed, top of spine chipped away, minor spots and stains; a good, sound copy. The plates, printed on cheap paper, are uniformly toned and slightly spotted. ""Protégé of Cuvier, talented, unusually skillful"" (DSB) Flourens founded, with Arago, the Comptes rendu, still one of the greatest of all scientific periodicals, and tusseled with Victor Hugo over an election to the French Academy. His work was precise, and largely accurate, and he made a number of important discoveries in his field of physiology. But he was often authoritarian, and he notoriously criticized Darwin in 1864."

Published by R. B. Davis, London 1836 - Hand-coloured lithograph by J. W. Giles. Printed by J. Graf on India paper and mounted on larger sheet of wove paper.
