The History of Texas; or, the Emigrant's, Farmer's, and Politician's Guide to the Character, Climate, Soil, and Productions of that Country: Geographically Arranged From Personal Observations and Experiences

Cincinnati: Stereotyped and Published by J.A. James & Co.. 1836. First. First edition. 12mo. 336pp. Lacks the folding map. Original muslin cloth with remnant of printed paper spine label. A couple of contemporary owner's name and in initials, small crease and modest dampstain tidemark on titlepage, spine label quite tanned and moderately chipped, scattered foxing in text, bottom 1" of cloth lacking at foot, still a sound and presentable good copy. "Conditions just prior to the Revolution described by an actual observer" - Howes 48. Apparently this copy made the rounds: one of the owner's inscriptions is particularly interesting: "Samuel Haggard pd. on[e] dollar". One Squire Haggard, the son of Samuel Haggard of Bedford County, Tennessee, served in the Army of the Republic of Texas in 1836-7 during its war for independence with Mexico. This copy also bears the contemporary penciled initials "F.Q. $1.25" and the contemporary penciled name "Joseph Sharp" (a Joseph Sharp also served in the Army of the Republic of Texas). Important contemporary history of Texas, lacking the map, as often. .

The Decision of the Three Judges of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, pronounced seriatim Monday, 11th of April, 1836, on the Applicability of the Marriage Act of England to this Colony; with a report of the case, and a review of the arguments.

      - Sydney, printed by William Jones 1836. Octavo unbound as issued (an early if not original strip of paper down the spine); [2],40pp (last blank), [1] (blank). Title and last blank dusty. Inscribed and signed by Dillon - then a solicitor to the Supreme Court - to John Gurner who arrived in Sydney in 1817 as Barron Field's clerk, became the chief clerk, and later a commissioner of the Supreme Court. One of the earliest authoritive attacks on legal judgments published in the colony - and worthy of notice as the case hinged upon the concept of legal independence from Great Britain. Ferguson (2116) appends an uncommonly long note indicating that he at least found it of interest and import ('important case' are his words). A John Maloney was convicted of bigamy but made representation that as he had first married after, and not in accordance with, the passing of the Marriage Act then his first marriage was invalid. The Chief Justice (Forbes) and Justice Dowling determined the Marriage Act had no application in New South Wales and found him guilty; Justice Burton disagreed as does Dillon in this pamphlet. He has found himself unable to merely report the case without comment as this decision now left the colony with 'no law prevailing here as to marriage'. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

"Cours sur la génération, l'ovologie et l'embryologie, fait au Muséum d'histoire naturelle en 1836 … recueilli et publié par M. Deschamps."

Paris: "Librairie médicale de Trinquart, Rue de L'École de Médecine, 9,". 1836. "First edition, 4to, pp. [4], 191, [1] errata; 10 lithograph plates at the back, 4 folding; 2 folding plates with short tears, another with a longer tear (but no loss in any instance); original printed gray paper-covered boards (publisher's ads on back cover), edges rubbed, top of spine chipped away, minor spots and stains; a good, sound copy. The plates, printed on cheap paper, are uniformly toned and slightly spotted. ""Protégé of Cuvier, talented, unusually skillful"" (DSB) Flourens founded, with Arago, the Comptes rendu, still one of the greatest of all scientific periodicals, and tusseled with Victor Hugo over an election to the French Academy. His work was precise, and largely accurate, and he made a number of important discoveries in his field of physiology. But he was often authoritarian, and he notoriously criticized Darwin in 1864."

Published by R. B. Davis, London 1836 - Hand-coloured lithograph by J. W. Giles. Printed by J. Graf on India paper and mounted on larger sheet of wove paper. Good condition apart from some overall light soiling, a number of mild water stains in the margins, and slight discolouration of the paper due to age. An striking print after Richard Bennett Davis, animal painter to King George IV and Queen Victoria, from the "Hunters Annual" series. A very fine equestrian portrait from a series that eventually included sixteen prints and was issued in four parts. Initially self-taught, he came to the notice of the King who arranged for him to be given proper training. He exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy for over fifty years, his first exhibit being in 1802. In 1831 he was appointed animal painter to George IV and later Queen Victoria." (Charles Lane, British Racing Prints , p.98) Cf. Mellon, British Sporting and Animal Prints , p. 63; cf.       [Paris: l'auteur, 1836. Stipple engraving printed in colors and finished by hand. A lovely image by Redouté from his very rare final work "Choix de Soixante Roses," a book comprised of varieties not found in his monumental "Les Roses." The Choix de Soixante Roses was "the last of Redouté's original publications, a folio volume containing sixty plates of new roses printed in color after Redouté's method. The book was dedicated to his former pupil Louise-Marie d'Orleans, daughter of Louis Philippe, and now the first queen of the Belgians. In this last publication, Redouté honors his country of birth, if only by means of the dedication" (Stafleu, "Redouté - Peintre de Fleurs" in A Catalogue of Redoutéana Exhibited at the Hunt Botanical Library). The work was issued by Redouté at the end of his glorious career, on the heels of the success of his more well-known Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs . Like that work, the plates in Choix de Soixante Roses , issued in 15 parts, were produced via the method he developed nearly fifty years earlier: colour printed stipple engravings finished with additional hand-colouring. This method allowed Redouté to produce remarkably life-like and delicate depictions. By the time of this final work, however, lithography had largely replaced his laborious method. Placing these images in that context gives special meaning to this, his final encore. Both the book and images from the book are very rare. Stock could locate no more than 12 complete copies of the work extant and no copies have appeared at auction in over a quarter century. Dunthorne 234 ("not seen"); Great Flower Books, p. 129; Nissen 1593; Stock 2364.

De inflammatione ossium eorumque anatome generali. Exercitatio anatomico-pathologica. + Accedunt Joannis Muelleri Observationes de canaliculis corpusculorum ossium atque de modo, quo terrea materia in ossibus.

- - First and only Edition of this rare book.! - In this book, Miescher discusses the embryology and growth of bone as well as the various inflammatory diseases that afflict the skeletal system. The work also contains Müller's "Observationes de canaliculis corpusculorum ossium atque de modo, quo terrea materia in ossibus continetur" illustrated with four very fine lithographic plates. - - "His accurate descriptions of finer bone structure and the histology of fracture-healing in his 1836 treatises were his main contributions to medical science. He was first to distinguish and carefully describe hyaline, elastic, and fibrous cartilage. His conclusions that ossification was always preceded by cartilage, which was then directly transformed into bone by calcification, and his belief that callus formation is always from the broken ends of bone and not from the periosteum are subject to some modification today, but were logical inferences for his time. Bacterial infection was not then understood, and he thought that suppuration was caused by mechanical interference with circulation at the point of breakage. He was first to describe resorption of bone in the healing of fractures." - - "Among his minor contributions were observations and lectures (never published) on liver and bladder cancer, congenital malformations, small publications on a bird trematode (Monostoma bijugum), a fish tapeworm (Tetrarhynchus), and a human skin mite (Demodex). In mouse muscle he discovered the spore sacs of Sarcocystis, still called Miescher's tubes. He published little during his life, but exerted a strong influence in the resurgence of the Basel medical school and on the practice of medicine through his students. He was also a medical historian, and gave three major addresses in this field: one on Felix Plater, one on the history of the University of Basel, and one on Albrecht von Haller, a 32-page gem of biography." LOWELL E. NOLAND, JMH, 1963, pp.394-395 - Miescher discovered nuclein and was also the first to suggest the existence of a genetic code. - - Friedrich-Miescher-His was the son of Johannes Miescher (1771-1846) who was both a farmer and a mill owner manufacturing and trading worldwide in woven linens. - He was born 1811 at Walkringen, Switzerland, then attendance at Biel Gymnasium, where Agassiz studied shortly before, and later two medical years at Bern and four (1832-1836) under Johannes Mueller in Berlin, where in 1836 he published his two major medical works "De ossium genesi, structura et vita" and "De inflammation ossium eorumque anatome generali". Returning 1837 to Switzerland, at the age of only 26 he declined a position at Bern and accepted in ordinary pathology and pathological anatomy at the university a professorship in anatomy and physiology at the small, struggling medical school at Basel. Having no students at first, he spent the winter of 1838-1839 in Paris with Magendie and Nordmann, the latter arousing in him an enduring interest in parasitology. - In 1843 he married Charlotte Antonie His, daughter of Eduard His (originally Ochs), manufacturer of silk ribbons, and Anna Catharina and older sister of Wilhelm His, later embryologist at Leipzig. - In 1844 he accepted a professorship at the Hochschule in Bern, amid political controversies about his appointment, and served until 1850, when he returned as professor of general pathology to Basel and there spent the rest of his life. He was active in Swiss scientific societies, organized a Basel medical society for local physicians, and served as rector of the University for a time. In 1867 he obtained the 'honorary' citizenship of Basle for himself and his descendants. He was a music-lover, played the lute, and sang leading roles in local choral productions. He had a large medical practice and in 1871 gave up his professorship, but continued to give some lectures. He died of heart disease in 1887. - His son was Johannes Friedrich Miescher-Rüsch (1844-1895), the discoverer of DNA. - - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1772; Callisen XXX, 381 und 475; Hirsch/H. IV, 208.

[Vienna], Feb. 22 or 29, 1836. - 4to. 1 p. on double leaf.

4to (268 x 190mm). With 993 engraved plates, almost all finely handcoloured. Publisher's red half morocco, gilt decorated spines with gilt lettering, topedges gilt. A complete copy of the famous 'Disciples Edition', which eclipses all others for scientific accuracy and beauty of embellishment. Each division is edited by the most eminent professors of this period such as: Milne Edwards, Quatrefages, d'Orbigny, Valenciennes. The work is composed as follows: Les Mammifères, by M. Edwards; Les Oiseaux, by A. d'Orbigny; Les Reptiles, by M. Duvernoy; Les Poissons, by A. Valenciennes; Les Mollusques, by G.P. Deshayes; Les Insectes, by Audouin, Blanchard, Doyère et M. Edwards; Les Arachnides, by A. Duges and M. Edwards; Les Crustacées, by M. Edwards; Les Annelides, by M. Edwards; Les Zoophytes, by M. Edwards. The numbering of the plates is somewhat confusing as some plates have never been published. Nissen gives a collation but his listing is not quite correct. The plates are of a surprising exactness of detail and the colouring is very attractive. The copy is similar to the ones we have sold in the past and is complete. Brunet is the only bibliography to give the correct number of plates. A fine copy, a few plates with some minor moderate foxing.//Nissen ZBI, 1014.
