1836. A Comic Opera. In Two Acts. The Music by John Hullah. London: Richard Bentley, 1836. Bound in full tan calf with gilt paneled spine and leather labels, all page edges gilt. First Edition of Dickens's first play to be published (produced on the stage about two months after his "The Strange Gentleman," but published a year earlier).~Dickens's musical collaborator was John Hullah, who was Government Inspector of Musical Education. They had met early in 1835, after Hullah had set to music a portion of an opera called "The Gondoliers," the scene of which was laid in Venice. Dickens objected to writing the libretto on a foreign subject, and a compromise was effected which gave birth to "The Village Coquettes." The opera was accepted by Mr. Braham, manager of the new St. James's Theatre. It had its first presentation on December 6, 1836, with Braham himself in the cast... The play ran nineteen times in London, when it was transferred to Edinburgh and played under the management of Mr. Ramsay, a friend of Sir Walter Scott. [Eckel]~The 71-page book was originally issued in delicate grey boards, which are very seldom seen today. This copy was re-bound (without the boards) quite some time ago in full tan calf, with gilt paneled spine and red and green leather spine labels (subsequently re-backed, with the earlier spine laid back down). Condition is very good, the main flaw being that about half of the "Dickens" spine label has chipped away. Quite a scarce early Dickens item. Gimbel A25; Carr B525; Eckel pp 157-158. Provenance: bookplates of Robert C. May C.E. (of Orwell Lodge, Clapham Park, London), and of [William Proby, 5th] Earl of Carysfort [1836-1909].

        Major Ridge. A Cherokee Chief.

Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1836-44. Hand-colored lithograph. Folio (19½" X 14"). Very good. Mild overall age toning; several very small (¼") edge chips, all far removed from the image area. A handsome image from the first, folio-size edition of McKenney and Hall's reknowned "History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs," published in three volumes between 1836 and 1844. Containing 120 colored plates (based on oil paintings by Charles Bird King, most of which were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian), this legendary trio is the major source for accurate images of many early Native American leaders. Later printings were reduced to an octavo size. Major Ridge was a leading foe of Thomas Jefferson's Indian removal plans, a noted Indian warrior, chief, judge and diplomat. A strong imprint with bold, fresh coloring. Scarce.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition translated by Louis Viardot and illustrated by Tony Johannot First printing. Two headpieces printed on China, two engraved title pages and 800 large thumbnails in-text. As often, the second volume of 1840. This feature is actually quite common in publishing, even if we have difficulty understanding how the editor was able to mix volumes of the 1836 edition that of 1840, unless 2 runs were established simultaneously. Binding semi antique black shagreen. Back with false nerves decorated with fat and lean nets, wheels and tail head. Title and volume number gilded. All relatively fresh, with very little foxing, concentrated on certain passages, including the preface. A few yellowed sheets in Volume I. In the Prologue to Volume I, brown trace internal margins of a paper web (bookmark) that was taken away on 3 sheets, from fading. Good copy, a good draw. 744pp. et 758pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Epistle to Stow's Chronicles. Volume 1 includes a non-authorial presentation of one page, and a one page description of the Protestant tendencies of certain Archbishops of Cologne in the 16th century including the marriage of one to the nun Agnes of Mansfeld for which he was declared an apostate.         Letter from Sydney, many references to early life in colonial Glebe..

1836. Small loss from the seal being removed and several repairs with tape.. Single sheet of laid paper, 318 x 340 mm., folded to letter size, written in cross hatch, old folds with postal stamps for Sydney, Liverpool and London. Long manuscript letter from Mrs Harriet Betts to her sister in London, containing good detail of colonial social activities and local events in Glebe. The letter was written over the course of two months, with the commencement date of December 10 1835 and concluded on the 8 February the following year. Harriet Betts (1780-1852), was married to John Betts of Glebe, her letter was written from Minusnarra Cottage and there is much detail of social activities in the colony. Finer points of the letter include a description of a picnic party to the North shore attended by her daughter Harriot (which involved a horse-back ride), a boat trip to the Medway currently in the harbour, where the captain served them 'a handsome cold collation with champagn' after which they went round to the Heads and landed, experiencing splendid views, collecting shells and ascending rocks before an excellent dinner with more Champaign. The neighbours of the Betts, Mr & Mrs Graham of Hereford House are duly mentioned in regards to the picnic. They also visited Mrs 'B' and 'saw her splendid mansion over it is the handsomest in the Colony & will when entirely finished cost 8 to 10 thousand...' Visitors to Mrs Betts included a Mrs Dowling 'a pretty engaging young woman married to Judge Dowlings nephew, they have a handsome cottage at Woolloomoolloo & one little boy' also 'an Aunt of Mrs Baker's who was wrecked in the Enchantress & lost all her clothes & Piano'.Minusnarra cottage appears to be a temporary residence, as Harriet lists in her letter a selection of household items she would like shipped, she express's the hope that the 'cottage we mean to begin building after this rainy season' is ready when the goods arrive. Harriet Betts is recorded as dying in Kew Cottage, on Glebe Point Road, Kew Cottage was built circa 1835 and demolished by fire in 1907.As the dates and postmarks indicate, this letter was carried aboard the convict transport Norfolk on her return journey, departing on 11 February 1836.

      - Düsseldorf, Arnz; Bonn, Cohen, 1836-1863. 4to (325 x 245mm). With 146 (of 352) partly hand-coloured lithographed plates and descriptive text. Later half cloth, spine with red and green gilt lettered label. Only a part of this foundation work on succulents, describing many South African species. He was closely associated with the French botanists and botanical artists of the Napoleonic period. "His friendship for Redouté, the painter, who illustrated de Candolle's 'Plantarum Succulentarum Historia' led Salm-Dyck to devote himself thence-forward to the study of succulent plants. He took lessons from his friend .' (Curtis Botanical Magazine Dedications p. 67). Soon his collection of living succulent plants at Schloss Dyck became famous throughout Europe and was unrivalled at his time. The excellent plates are hand-coloured lithographs of drawings by the author.Kerkham, Southern African Botanical Literature, no. 577; Junk Rara pp. 107-109; Nissen BBI, 1720; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 10.129.         Sketches by "Boz," illustrative of every-day life, and every day people.

London: John Macrone,, 1836 & 1837. In two volumes. Illustrations by George Cruikshank. [Â… The second series. Complete in one volume.] Together 2 works in 3 volumes. First series: original dark green regular-patterned straight-grain morocco cloth, spines blocked and lettered in gilt. Second series: original rose-pink morocco cloth, sides blocked in blind with a central wreath, spine blocked in blind with a circular pattern, lettered and decorated in gilt over a panel of cloth stained black, yellow endpapers. Housed in a burgundy flat back cloth solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. First series: frontispieces and 16 engraved plates. Second series: etched frontispiece, extra engraved title, and 8 engraved plates. Early ownership inscriptions of W. H. Lowndes to blank rectos of frontispiece in each vol. of the first series; "Osmond" inscription to front free endpaper of second series; lightly pencilled ownership inscriptions of Walter E. Smith. Very slight wear to extremities, light oxidisation to plates as often, still an excellent set in near-fine original condition. First editions of Dickens's first books, both the first and second series, from the collection of the Dickens bibliographer Walter E. Smith. Eckel's contention that there were two issues of the second series, distinguished by the presence or lack of the list of illustrations (present here) has lost force over the years. Sadleir was puzzled by it, and Smith, having scrutinized 18 copies, finds that no consistent states of binding or printing can be associated with early or late copies. Smith notes that Macrone was anxious to print it in time for Christmas and hurried it through the presses, leaving many mistakes uncorrected.

Erste Ausgabe. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pirate and The Three Cutters, The

1836. first edition. It's just six of one and half-a-dozen of the otherÂ…"MARRYAT, Captain Frederick. The Pirate and The Three Cutters. Illustrated With Twenty Splendid Engravings From Drawings by Clarkson Stanfield, Esq. R.A. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1836. First edition. Octavo (9 5/16 x 6 inches; 236 x 151 mm.). viii, 315, [1, blank] pp. Additional steel-engraved title page, twenty steel-engraved plates with tissue guards, including frontispiece. Engraved title-page and frontispiece foxed, otherwise text and plates very clean.Publisher's maroon bead-grain cloth, front and back cover decoratively stamped in blind, front cover with a central sailing ship stamped in gilt. Spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt, yellow coated end-papers. Small rectangular binders ticket of Remnant & Edmonds on rear paste-down. Spine and edges of covers faded. Still a spectacular copy in the original decorative cloth. Two nautical novels in one. The Pirate And The Three Cutters was the ninth of Captain Marryat's books. It is comprised of two stories. The Three Cutters is quite interesting, from a social point of view, providing an intimate glimpse of life aboard a yachtsman's cruising yacht, entertaining male and female guests, young and old. In attempting to help catch a smuggler, the yachtsman himself is captured. The Pirate is the longer of the two stories, and tells of two brothers who are separated during infancy. One grows up to be a pirate and the other becomes a naval officer. An engaging and often amusing read.Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was an English Royal Navy officer, novelist, and a contemporary and acquaintance of Charles Dickens, noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story. He employed a lucid and direct narrative style, incorporating humor and incidents drawn from his varied experience at sea. "Marryat's greatness is undeniable" (Joseph Conrad). "Marryat has the power to set us in the midst of ships and men and sea and sky all vivid, credible, authentic" (Virginia Woolf).Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793-1867) was a prominent English marine painter who later served as the curator of the Naval Gallery at Greenwich Hospital. Sadleir 1594. Wolff 4533.

EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1836 A very good copy of the first edition with 30 hand coloured plates engraved from drawings by Edward Lear. In original publisher's cobbled brown (originally purple) cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. With the original green endpapers. With volume listing; black and white frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bewick; hand coloured vignette title page with 2 parrots; 2 further title pages; an advertisement extolling the virtues of Edward Lear's pictures; contents listing; Memoir of Thomas Bewick (by the Reverend Turner); text with 30 hand coloured plates; and publisher's catalogues bound at the rear. One of these is a prospectus for the Naturalist's Library and advertises the next 2 volumes to be published: Birds of West Africa. The binding is bright and clean. There is a little loss to the top of the spine and a small 1.5cm split in the cloth at the top of the spine joint with the back board. There is a small pull to the bottom of the spine and some bumping to the bottom corners. There is a very small dent in the side edge to the back board. The spine is slightly faded. Internally there is a small slip pasted to the front endpaper (giving a sales listing for the volume) and a small printed name. Some of the text pages are unopened, as is the half title/volume listing page - which someone has partly opened - with a very small tear at the top of the volume listing. The text is very clean as are the plates, which are well coloured.

Little Rock: Albert Pike, 1836. 52pp. Antique style half calf and marbled boards, leather label. Top portion of titlepage and first leaf repaired with later paper. Some light foxing. Very good. The proceedings of the first Arkansas constitutional convention, which met during the month of January, 1836. There was some controversy about admitting another pro- slavery state, due to tensions between North and South over the Missouri Compromise, but, in the end, President Andrew Jackson admitted Arkansas as the twenty-fifth state in June of that year. The constitution passed by this convention held until Arkansas seceded in 1861, at which time it was replaced by a similar pro-Confederate version. A true revision did not take place until after the Civil War ended. ALLEN, ARKANSAS IMPRINTS, 40.

Plans Elevations Sections and Views of the Church of Batalha, in the Province of Estremaduras in Portugal, with the History and Description by Fr. Luis de Sousa; with Remarks, to which is prefixed an Introductory Discourse on the Principles of Gothic Architecture, by James Murphy.

London, Printed for I. & J. Taylor, (1795) New edition, Library of Fine Arts 1836. London, Printed for I. & J. Taylor, (1795) New edition, Library of Fine Arts : , 1836. London, Printed for I. & J. Taylor, (1795) New edition, Library of Fine Arts 1836ii, 61pp text, (1 p.), 27 engraved plates, including the title and dedication leaf. Folio. Rebound sympathetically conserving the original title label on upper board. New end papers. The architectural publishing firm, Isaac and Josiah Taylor, later Taylor's Architectural Library, was closed in April 1834 upon the death of Josiah Taylor. The stock of the firm was sold at two auctions, held in October 1834 and January 1835. At one of these the copperplates for the present work were purchased by John Williams of the "Library of Fine Arts", who created this edition of the work. He had the text reset by T.H. Drury and arranged to have the plates restruck. The dedication plate and list of the original subscribers to the 1795 edition were redundant, and thus omitted to be replaced by a letterpress dedication to John Soane. Church and Monastery of Santa Maria da Victoria, also known as Batalha was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. It is a World Heritage Site. A highly original, national Gothic style evolved, profoundly influenced by Manueline art. The plates in this book record the details of the building. In 1835, William Beckford published his last work, the travelogue Recollections of an Excursion to the Monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha and this book, which perhaps capatilzed on the publication of Beckford's work, followed in the next year. Murphy, of Irish descent and a talented draftsman, was commissioned by William Burton Conyngham to make drawings of the church and monastery of Batalha and the result was the original 1795 edition of the book. William Beckford, that great devotee of the gothic, called Murphy "a dull draftsman" which seems rather cruel [ Gentleman's Magazine 1836 vol 161 p 280]
