        L'Indicatore delle Leggi ed Ordinazioni Dall'Anno 1796 a Tutto.

1835 - Reconciling the Old and New Systems of Lombardy-Veneto Negri, Antonio. L'Indicatore delle Leggi ed Ordinazioni Dall'Anno 1796 a Tutto il 1834 nei Rapporti Giudiziarii pel Regno Lombardo-Veneto. Milan: Coi Tipi di Bernardoni di Gio, 1835. [ii], 375, [7] pp. [Bound with] Negri, Antonio. Appendice All'Indicatore delle Leggi ed Ordinazioni dal 1796 Avanti Ne'Rapporti Giudiziarii del Regno Lombardo-Veneto. Milan: Coi Tipi di Santo Bravetta, 1836. 45, [2] pp. Octavo (9" x 6"). Contemporary quarter sheep over marbled boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, joints and front hinge partially cracked but secure, corners bumped and somewhat worn. Light toning to text, negligible foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. * First edition. Established by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, this Northern Italian kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto was part of the Austrian Empire. Lombardy was annexed to Sardinia in 1859 and the kingdom ceased to exist when the rest of its territory was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. Interesting for its insights into the development of the Kingdom's legal system, Negri's digest reconciles pre-1815 laws with the post-1815 system. A few supplemental update volumes were published through 1858. OCLC locates 1 copy of the 1835 edition in North America (at Harvard Law School, which lacks the 1836 Appendice). Not in the British Museum Catalogue. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Collection de 24 bouquets de fleurs.

      - Paris, chez l'éditeur, 1835. 4to (280 x 210mm). With a fine pictorial title and 24 plates, all stipple engravings, printed in colour with extensive hand-finishing, engraved by Lambert after drawings by Madame H. Vincent. Dunthorne 322 quotes only an incomplete copy with 22 plates.         Horse Shoe Robinson By the Author of Swallow Barn

1835 - London: Richard Bentley, 1835 [1835] 3 8vo volumes, viii, 321, 322, 320. 3/4 dark blue leather over blue cloth, title in gilt. Front outer joint of Vol 3 split and pulling away from spine but still attached; name in pencil to Vol I; all three volumes bear the bookplate of David M Sherman to either fpep or fep; wear to spine tips; lower spine leather of Vol III chipped ( w some loss), a VG- set of this work by Kennedy (October 25, 1795 – August 18, 1870), his second major work of fiction after Swallow Barn, which was his most succesful novel, though the present work is generally acknowledged as his finest. Kennedy was both an active Whig politician who served as Secretary of the Navy under Filmore, and a man of letters, who authored at least one chapter of Thackeray's Vanity Fair and who was responsible for introducing Poe to Thomas White of the Southern Literary Messenger. The 2 volume Carey, Lea & Blanchard edition of 1835 was the true first though the triple decker edition appears to be the less common of the two. [Attributes: First Edition]

Edition originale de cet ouvrage fondateur, "one of the greatest books of the 19th century" (G. Sarton, cite par IESS, XIII, 247).         The American Anti-Slavery Almanac, for 1836 - Volume 1, Number 1

Boston: Webster & Southard, 1835. First Printing. Pamphlet. Very Good. First Printing. Pamphlet. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The very first issue of the Anti-Slavery Almanac. Complete with 48 unnumbered pages including the covers. Cover illustration of "An Emancipated Family" plus two other illustrations: one shows a "Negro Hunt" and the other shows happy African children playing outside their hut just before being captured by slavers. Sound string binding. Clean pages with occasional, very light toning/spoting in the margins. Light wear. This is the first issue of the American Anti-Slavery Almanac. As noted in advertisement in The Liberator, the almanac's purpose was to provide "facts and information concering slavery which cannot fail to render it interesting to friends of Abolition, and a terror to slaveholders." The illustrations published in these almanacs were just as important. As noted by Angelina Grimke, "Until the pictures of the slave's sufferings were drawn and held up to the public gaze, no Northerner had any idea of the cruelty of the system, it never entered their minds that such abominations could exist in Christian, Republican America.

ORATION ON THE LIFE AND CHARACTER OF GILBERT MOTIER DE LAFAYETTE. DELIVERED AT THE REQUEST OF BOTH HOUSES OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES, BEFORE THEM, IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AT WASHINGTON, ON THE 31ST DECEMBER, 1834.

Washington: Printed by Gales and Seaton, 1835. - 94pp. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, ruled in gilt. Neatly rebacked, the original spine laid down. Presentation leaf tipped in ahead of titlepage with presentation inscription from the author ("Gideon Hard from John Quincy Adams") and further inscriptions by several later owners passing along the book. Very minor foxing and soiling. A good copy. A presentation copy of Adams' speech honoring the memory of Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. This copy is inscribed by Adams to Gideon Hard, is in a presentation binding of red straight-grained morocco, of the sort favored by the Adams family for decades, and is printed on thick paper. John Quincy Adams devoted his entire career to government service. The son of President John Adams, he himself served as the sixth president, as a U.S. Senator from 1803 to 1808, as Secretary of State from 1817 to 1825, and in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in the U.S. Capitol in 1848. Gideon Hard (1797-1885) was a lawyer and politician from New York State. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1833-37, and was thus one of Adams' fellow Congressmen. He later held several New York State political offices. Adams provides a review of Lafayette's contributions to American independence and his activities in the decades after the Revolutionary War, particularly his involvement in the French Revolution and various French governments which followed. In this brief biography, Adams reflects "upon the life and character of a man whose life was, for nearly threescore years, the history of the civilized world - of a man, of whose character, to say that it is indissolubly identified with the Revolution of our Independence, is little more than to mark the features of his childhood - of a man, the personified image of self- circumscribed liberty." An eight- page appendix records Congressional actions related to the death of Lafayette. SABIN 295. JACKSON, p.208.

THE HISTORY OF GREECE, From the Earliest Period to the Death of Agesilaus. Continued to the Death of Alexander the Great, by R.A. Davenport

London: Printed for Thomas Tegg and Son, 1835. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Eight volumes. London: Printed for Thomas Tegg and Son, 1835. "In the year (1784) following that of the publication of Ferguson's Roman History appeared the first volume of William Mitford's History of Greece, a venture upon what was then, in English historical literature, almost untrodden ground. [Edward] Gibbon had suggested the enterprise to Mitford, who was his brother-officer in the south-Hampshire militia and had published a treatise on the military force of England, and the militia in particular. Mitford's History, which was not completed till 1810, long held the field" (from The Cambridge History of English and American Literature, Volume X). 12mo. In a three-quarter green calf over marbled paper binding, with a pair of burgundy calf spine labels, five raised bands, and decorative gilt stamping. Internally crisp and clean. Minor dust staining to the top edges. Some general minor shelfwear; otherwise a very good set..

South Sea Whale Fishery . A Representation of Boats attacking a Sperm Whale

London: Rudolph Ackermann, 1835. Handcoloured aquatint, 350 x 515 mm. (image size), complete with caption and all margins; sealed tear top left, generally in very good condition, framed. Whaling dramas. A rare and classic whaling print, showing a dramatic scene of a sperm whale crashing through a whaling boat, flinging the five whalers into the sea. The title "South Sea Whale Fishery" referred to all whale hunting south of the Arctic, an area the British established in 1776 when an American whaleman, Samuel Enderby, emigrated to England and was followed by recruits from Nantucket. 'Once the British and American China traders pioneered the Cape Horn route in the 1780s, the whalers followed closely in their wake… the whalers poked along and across the Ocean itself in search of the great leviathan - out to its farthest extensions and into its most distant corners, often to regions seldom visited by anyone else. The history of the whalers in the South Seas is thus, in a sense, the epic saga of the discovery, colonisation, contamination and subjugation of the Pacific itself' (Forster, The South Sea Whaler).
