Neat professional repair to front joint, touch of rubbing to extremities, some mild foxing; a very good copy. The lithographs were done after Duhaut-Cilly's sketches; they depict San Francisco, San Luis Rey, Fort Ross, and Oahu. They are printed on very thin, high-quality India proof paper, which results in a crisp image, sharper and with more depth than on ordinary paper. The trading voyage from which the book derives "was the first of several French attempts to conduct trade with California and the Pacific Northwest." Duhaut-Cilly's ship, the Héros, traversed the coast of South America before reaching San Francisco in February 1827, "and for almost two years traded up and down the California coast from Fort Ross to Baja. Johnson Karte von Portland, Maine WIR VERKAUFEN NUR ORIGINAL ANTIKE KARTEN - KEINE REPRODUKTIONEN Titel: Plan von Portland graviert für das Verzeichnis von D.G. Johnson, 1834. *** [Please note that the English version might contain errors of translation, we apologize if the formulas are … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUCAS (Charles)
(AVIATION). European Areonautical [sic] Society.
[London:] Blatch, [, 1834. Single sheet (220 × 88 mm). Large wood engraved image of the airship at head. Traces of old folds. Laid to stiff paper (a brown paper album leaf, chipped at upper left hand corner, with slight loss to extreme corner of broadside), but clean and fresh. A very rare broadside. The Eagle was 'an airship designed by the Comte de Lennox in 1834 to create a direct communication link between the capitals of Europe. The first aerial ship of its kind, it was exhibited in the grounds of the Aeronautical Society in Kensington, London... The ship was cylindrical with conical ends and had eight paddle-shaped flaps, four on either side, which were intended to be worked backwards and forwards manually by a series of cords and chains. However, the airship proved too heavy to lift its own weight and was destroyed by onlookers after a failed ascent from the Champ de Mars, Paris, on 17th August 1834' (Science Museum, Science and Society Picture Library online). Though several prints and pamphlets accompanied the exhibition of the Eagle, most are very rare. Worldcat lists a single copy: University of Pennsylvania.

Bolyai, Farkas]; [Et. Al.]
A' Magyar Kir. Egyetem' Bet?ivel, Budán [Buda], 1834. First edition. In publisher's printed wrappers. VIII, 110 p. The first Hungarian dictionary for mathematical terms, with several contributions by Farkas Bolyai. Farkas Bolyai was one of the authors and editors of the present work, which is the first Hungarian dictionary of mathematical terminology. Among the approximately 3,000 entries there are about 150 whose translations were coined by Bolyai. The eight-page foreword provides the bibliography of the sources used for the dictionary, citing two works by Bolyai: "Arithmetica' eleje. B.B.F. által" (1830; Elements of Arithmetic); and the Hungarian supplement for "Tentamen" (1832). The dictionary indicates which Hungarian work or works used or explained a given term earlier, thus it determines the coiner of the translation, such as "Addere, summázni. Bolyai" (p. 2.) or "Calculus integralis, [.] Summaképkeresés. Arithm. (p. 17.). The final part of the book is a short vocabulary of military terms. Farkas Bolyai (1775-1856) was a Hungarian mathematician, a close friend of Gauss who regarded him as the only man who fully understood his metaphysics of mathematics. "He can be taken as a precursor of Gottlob Frege, Pasch, and Georg Cantor; but, as with many pioneers, he did not enjoy the credit that accrued to those that followed him".
