Character, object, and effects of Trades' Unions; with some remarks on the law concerning them.

London: James Ridgway and Sons 1834 - 8vo., (2) + 140pp., followed by 16pp. of Ridgway advertisements (these duplicated), light dampstain on first few leaves, original plain wrappers with printed label on upper cover, some wear to spine, but an excellent uncut copy. First edition. In the view of Sidney and Beatrice Webb this was an 'able' pamphlet setting forth the constitution and proceedings of the new unions but criticizing 'their pretensions in a manner which has not since been surpassed. . (It) remains, perhaps, the best statement of the case against Trade Unionism' [The History of Trade Unionism>, 1894, p.126]. Tufnell's bitter attack on the unions, his accounts of proceedings at secret union meetings and his demand for new and draconian legislation, is all encapsulated in his final paragraph: 'Part of London is now (March 7th) in darkness from a strike amongst the workmen at the gas establishments. Scarcely a town in England has escaped the infliction of a turn-out, and were (the writer) to state that the working classes, have taxed themselves to the amount of one million during the past year, in these futile attempts to raise wages, the calculation would probably be below the truth'. The author was one of the factory commissioners. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

An account of the transactions of His Majesty's Mission to the Court of Persia, in the Years 1807-11 [.] To which is appended, a brief history of the Wahauby.

London, James Bohn, 1834. - 8vo. 2 vols. VIII, 472, XXXIV. (4), V, (6)-238 pp. With 2 lithogr. frontispieces, 9 lithogr. plates on Chine appliqué and 1 folding lithogr. map of Central Arabia and Egypt. Contemp. tan calf bindings, spines renewed in period style. First edition. The second volume - and the map - are devoted entirely to the so-called "Nedjed Country". - "The first political and commercial treaty between Great Britain and Persia was concluded in 1801, when the East India Company sent John Malcolm to the Court of Fath Ali Shah. Persia undertook to attack the Afghans if they were to move against India, while the British undertook to come to the defence of Persia if they were attacked by either the Afghans or the French. When the Russians intensified their attacks on the Caucasian Provinces in 1803 annexing large territories, Fath Ali Shah appealed to the British for help, but was refused on the grounds that Russia was not included in the Treaty. The Persians thus turned to the French and concluded the Treaty of Finkenstein in 1807. It was against this background that Harford Jones, who was the chief resident at Basra for the East India Company, was sent to Persia by the Foreign Office in 1809 [.] The French who had now entered into a treaty with Russia (the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807) had lost interest in Persia and removed their political and military missions. Thus the British were able to conclude another treaty with Persia (the Treaty of Friendship and Alliance, also called the Treaty of Tehran) which bound Britain to assist Persia in case any European nation invaded her (even if Britain had a treaty with that nation). This treaty was not honoured by the British after the first Persian-Russian War" (Ghani). Volume 2 is devoted exclusively to the Wahhabis, tracing their history from the mid-eighteenth century to their defeat by Egyptian Ottoman forces at the site of the Wahhabi capital, Dariyah (Dereyah), in 1818. - Rare: the only other copy in a contemporary binding on the market within the last 30 years was the Burrell copy (wanting half titles and rebacked; Sotheby's, Oct 14, 1999, lot 127, £8,000). Only slightly browned and foxed (occasionally affecting plates), but altogether fresh, in an appealing full calf binding. Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 606. BM IV:457 (941). Wilson 33. Cf. Ghani 53f. (reprint). Diba 79.

Journey to the north of India, overland from England, through Russia, Persia, and Affghaunistaun.

London Bentley 1834 - First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xii, 418; viii, 440pp., 2 etched frontispieces, folding lithographed map, modern half calf gilt, red morocco labels, an excellent set. A scarce title by a key figure in the history of British and Russian relations in nineteenth century Central Asia. It was Conolly who coined the phrase "The Great Game" and his tragic execution along with Colonel Charles Stoddart is memorably recounted on the opening page of Peter Hopkirk's book of the same name. "Being in England on sick leave in 1829, Conolly obtained leave to return to India through central Asia. He left London on 10 August 1829, travelled through France and Germany to Hamburg, then continued by sea to St Petersburg, where he stayed a month, and then travelled via Tiflis and Tehran to Asterabad. There he disguised himself as an Asian merchant, with a stock of furs and shawls, hoping to reach Khiva. He left Asterabad for the Turkoman steppes on 26 April 1830, but when the little caravan to which he attached himself was about halfway between Krasnovodsk and Kizil Arvat he was seized by nomads and robbed. The Turkomans were undecided whether to kill him or sell him into slavery. Tribal jealousies in the end secured his release, and he returned to Asterabad on 22 May 1830, from where he travelled to India by way of Mashhad, Herat, and Kandahar, visiting Sind, and finally crossing the Indian frontier in January 1831. He published a lively narrative of the journey—reflecting his bright, hopeful temperament—A Journey to Northern India (1834)" (ODNB). Yakushi (1994), C331. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PAXTON'S MAGAZINE OF BOTANY AND REGISTER OF FLOWERING PLANTS Volumes 1 - 4 [I - IV]

London: Orr and Smith, 1834. 1834-1838; vols. 1- 4 (of eventually 16). Complete with 171 hand-coloured engraved plates of which 23 are larger folding plates, after Frederick William Smith and Samuel Holden (some heightened with gum arabic), tissue guards, one plate of garden design. Bound in contemporary full black gilt-decorated, straight grained morocco; bindings good and strong with all boards firmly attached but with some chipping and loss and rubbing to the leather spines. Contents clean and tight, original marbled end papers, plates generally bright, a few with light spotting or slightly marked, a few folding plates a little worn/creased at leading edge. A very good run of the first four volumes. Very reasonably priced with the plates working out at less that £6.50 each. [Nissen BBI 2351; Great Flower Books, p.85; Stafleu TL2 7544] The Magazine of Botany was illustrated with fine botanical plates, of which Paxton notes in his introduction to volume 10 "the Embellishments of this work has been brought as near perfection as it is possible to attain. It is, indeed, suggested by some of our friends, that they are too beautiful; and that the plants they represent are not ordinarily so handsome as they are here depicted. Such a view, however, is a mistaken one: it arises from a rule which we adopt in the choice of subjects for our drawings, and which is, to have them prepared, whenever practicable, from specimens that are very favourably grown... on account of the stimulus it gives to those who see our plates, to grow their specimens to the like excellence". From 1826 to 1858 Paxton was chief gardener at the Duke of Devon's Chatsworth Estate, establishing it as "the most famous garden in England... [and in the Magazine] he described many of his plants and innovations at Chatsworth" (ODNB). Provenance: . First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. Small 4to (17 x 23.5cm).

L'Aspirant de Marine Opéra Comique en deux Actes Paroles de MMrs. Rochefort & Decomberousse... avec Accompt. de Piano par V. Rifaut. [Piano-vocal score]

Paris: J. Delahante, 1834. A French harpist and composer, Labarre studied the harp with Bochsa, Cousineau and Nadermann and composition with Boieldieu. "The musical style of his operas derives from the works of Boieldieu and Adam, and anticipates those of Offenbach; although they never achieved the popularity of Meyerbeer or Halévy, several of his works, such as Jovita, remained in the repertory throughout the 1850s... He was a conductor at the Opéra-Comique from 1847 to 1849, and later was appointed director of the imperial chapel. He succeeded Antoine Prumier as professor of harp at the Paris Conservatoire (1867-70), where Léon Gatayes and Félix Godefroid were among his pupils. During the last years of his life he was music critic for Paris illustré. He was admitted to the Légion d'Honneur in 1862." Frédéric Robert and Fiona Clampin in Grove Music Online. Gomis, a Spanish composer, knew Manuel García and was befriended by Rossini. "Between 1831 and 1836 Gomis wrote the music for four operas performed at the Opéra-Comique: Le diable à Seville, about General Riego's 1820 army rebellion; Le revenant, based on 'Wandering Willie's Tale' in Scott's Redgauntlet, and much praised for the 'Chanson du sabbat'; Le portefaix, his most successful opera; and Rock le barbu, acclaimed for the purity of its melodies." John Dowling in Grove Music Online. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, and Berlioz wrote his obituary.. Folio.          Travels into Bokhara; being the account of a journey from India to Cabool, Tartary, and Persia; also, narrative of a voyage on the Indus, from the sea to Lahore, with presents from the king of Great Britain; performed under the orders of the Supreme Government of India, in the years 1831, 1832, and 1833 .

London John Murray 1834 - First edition. 3 volumes, 8vo., 8 lithographed plates (one double page, two of coins), light foxing to plates, contemporary half calf gilt, marbled sides, black morocco lettering and numbering pieces, lightly rubbed, light wear to extremities, "Burnes was of the India's Company Service and after a successful mission to the Court of Lahore, during which he mapped the course of the Indus, he proposed to go further and cross Central Asia from the Indus to the Caspian. Burnes did not travel as an accredited agent of the government as it was considered too risky, but he did travel with papers stating that he was an officer returning home on leave. The book is thus an account of a famous journey written by an early spy. He visited Kabul where he met Joseph Wolff who had been travelling in the region disguised as a Moslem to preach Christianity to the Jews. Thence he proceeded via Balkh to Bokhara, and on to the Oxus, Merv and Khorasan. Volume III describes in some detail the geography of each of the regions he passed through." (Ghani). Ghani p60. Volume IV has the signature of Mr. George Drinkwater. Volume III also has the signature of G. Drinkwater, Green St., These first four parts were never bound and are as originally issued by the publisher. Cohn 181.

ENGLAND: A HISTORICAL POEM. Volume I

Simpkin and Marshal et al., London 1834 - Original brown cloth, recently rebacked retaining nearly all of the original spine; spine label mostly lacking. A Presentation copy INSCRIBED by the author on the front blank: "To/William Wordsworth Esq./with the author's/compliments." In addition this copy is SIGNED by the recipient on the title page: "W Wordsworth/Rydal Mount." In this volume, and in a second that was issued the following year, Ord attempted a history of England in verse. His efforts were not well received. One reviewer in THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE claimed "that the author has formed his manner and style too much on that of Lord Byron in exaggeration, impetuosity, and a perpetual straining for effect." A scarce book from Wordsworth's library. Old bookseller description laid in. Housed in a new calf-backed slipcase with cloth chemise. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Babbage's Calculating Engine Letter To Sir Humphrey Davy; On The Application Of Machinery; Address To The Astronomical Society; On The Determination Of The General Term Of A New Class Of Infinite Series; On The Errors Common To Many Tables; On A Method Of Expressing The Signs; Report By The Commission Re Calculating Machine

The Edinburgh Review or Critical Journal, Edinburgh 1834 - April - July 1834, Contemporary half calf, rubbed and frayed at the edges, but binding solid. Contained within the original bound volume of the Edinburgh Review, first title browned, with some minor spotting in a few places, ¿Mallow Club¿ at base of spine, no other markings or inscriptions. The definitive contemporary account of the difference engine impressive for its accuracy and detail, and for the manner in which the most significant features and innovations are highlighted . it is evident that much of Lardner's material has been obtained at first hand from Babbage (Bromley, Introduction to the 1982 edition of Babbage's Works). The only portion of Babbage's difference engine ever to be constructed was finished in 1832 by Babbage's mechanic Joseph Clement. The present article was the primary source of information for the Swedish engineer Georg Scheutz who eventually built his own calculating machine about twenty years later.          THE BEAUTIES OF FLORA, WITH BOTANIC AND POETIC ILLUSTRATIONS: BEING A SELECTION OF FLOWERS DRAWN FROM NATURE, ARRANGED EMBLEMATICALLY, WITH DIRECTIONS FOR COLOURING THEM

Eliza Eve Gleadall 1834-36, Heath Hall, near Wakefield - Vol. I: 347 x 252 mm. (13 5/8 x 9 7/8"); vol. II: 365 x 267 mm. (14 3/8 x 10 1/2"). Two volumes. Privately printed (for approximately 124 subscribers) FIRST EDITION. Original patterned green cloth with gilt embellishment on front cover, rebacked. Titles with flower garland and 41 LOVELY HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES. Front free endpapers with ownership inscriptions of Mary and Jane Templar. Five names added to list of subscribers in a neat copperplate hand. Dunthorne 123; Nissen 715. Bindings a bit soiled, extremities rubbed, but the rebacked volumes quite solid. Fore edge of dedication leaf and one plate a little frayed, occasional minor stains or smudges, but generally an excellent copy internally, mostly clean and fresh, with very richly colored plates. These volumes feature information on the symbolic meaning in the Victorian language of flowers, on poetry inspired by flowers, and on the colors and techniques one should use for botanical illustration. But apart from this content, the set for us today is of interest because of the beautifully colored plates. The engravings are not arranged by name or scientific class, but by the sentiment the flower represents (Passionflower relates Religious Superstition; Lily of the Valley to Purity and Return of Happiness), and each illustration is accompanied by two to four pages of letterpress. After giving some background information on the origin of the flower's name, recounting legends or anecdotes, and quoting verse, Miss Gleadall tells aspiring artists what colors to use when painting any of the various subjects, and offers advice on shading and finishing. This is the only work published by Miss Gleadall, an instructor at a school for young ladies in Yorkshire. Flower painting was considered an appropriate pastime--or "chaste recreation" in the author's words--for well-bred young women. Former owners the Misses Templar apparently used this work as intended: tiny spots of paint on the verso of some plates suggest the book was being consulted while the would-be artist tried to reproduce its results. This work is not common, and when it appears in the marketplace, it is typically in poor condition.
