Hart, Joseph C.]
G. & C. & H. Carvill, New York, 1834. Two volumes. 209; 206pp. Half title in both volumes. Original publisher's brown cloth, gilt burgundy morocco spine labels. First volume expertly rebacked, retaining original backstrip, second volume with neat repairs to spine ends. Multiple early ownership inscriptions of Elizabeth Alice Gill. Moderate foxing throughout, occasional tidelines. Good. First edition of the first American whaling novel, written by Joseph C. Hart (1798-1855). Extremely popular at the time of its publication, Hart wrote it in part to encourage congressional support for the whaling industry. Hart spent time researching the industry and interviewing people in the whaling community in Nantucket, and the book remains a useful resource about the whaling days of Nantucket and New Bedford. The story centers on the life of the quasi-fictional Miriam Coffin, and contemporary readers would have easily recognized the real-life Kezia Coffin (1723- 98), wife of Captain John Coffin, a Loyalist with strong British ties and rumored contacts with smugglers. Kezia held a monopoly over trade in Nantucket during the Revolution, and many were forced to borrow from her at exorbitant rates due to trade embargoes and British attacks on Nantucket vessels. Eventually, Nantucket declared neutrality and Kezia's monopoly fell apart. She went bankrupt, lost her home, and was disowned by the Quaker meeting. In the novel, Miriam engages in corrupt financial speculations, which Hart contrasts with her husband's hard work and heroic bearing as he carves out a noble livelihood as a whaler. Zavala, Lorenzo de
Paris: Imprenta de Decourchant, 1834. [4],vii,[1],374pp. In Spanish. Half title. Contemporary half French calf and marbled boards, gilt morocco label. Substantial scuffing to spine and boards, spine label rubbed and partially obscured, corners worn, minor chipping to edges. Scattered foxing and occasional minor toning to text. Withal, still a very good copy in original condition. A scarce account by the veteran Mexican diplomat and first vice-president of the Texas Republic, of his exile in the United States in the early 1830s following the overthrow of the Mexican government, with keen observations of American political culture. Of his travels through the United States, Lorenzo de Zavala gives personal impressions and information about New Orleans, slavery, the Mississippi River, Tennessee, Indiana, Cincinnati, Pittsburg, Canada, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and more. The work was published in Spanish by a Parisian printer during Zavala's time as minister for the Mexican government in France. It includes notes dedicated to Zavala's affairs in Texas, in which he discusses his colonization enterprises in the state. Zavala would become the first vice- president of the Republic of Texas a short two years later, in March 1836, when he also helped to frame the Texas Constitution. In the present work, Zavala writes that Texas, being a territory composed mostly of colonists from foreign countries, must be considered a state on its own: "Un inglés será Mejicano en Méjico, y un Mejicano Inglés en Londres. No sucederá lo mismo con las colonias. Lugares enteramente desiertos … [Click Below for Full Description]

KORÖSI CSOMA, Sandór.
Calcutta: printed at the Baptist Mission Press,, 1834. 2 works, quarto (271 x 215 mm). Contemporary "native" straight-grain dark green half roan, spines gilt lettered direct and gilt banded, four low raised bands decorated with a foliate roll tool, green pebble-grain cloth sides, red speckled edges. Housed in a custom made green cloth solander box. Bindings with a few scuffs and light abrasions, scattered foxing to endpapers, general light toning and occasional dust marking, Grammar cracked at gutter of title page and rear inner hinge (causing last few leaves to be slightly skewed). Very good copies, with the complete lithographed 40pp. section ("syllabic scheme" and Tibetan alphabet). First editions of the first Tibetan-English dictionary and grammar, remarkably scarce in commerce, with no copies of the Dictionary appearing on auction records and only three of the Grammar (1955, 1998, and an incomplete ex-library copy in 2017). This set has an excellent provenance: from the library of Thomas Herbert Lewin (1839-1916), army officer and frontier administrator, with his engraved armorial bookplate in each volume. Riddick remarks that "despite Lewin's diminutive self-image, as suggested by the title of his memoirs [A Fly on the Wheel or, How I Helped to Govern India (1885)], his life in British India ultimately involved a good deal of adventure and a significant contribution to the administration of Burma" (Glimpses of India 379). He joined the Bengal Establishment as an ensign in 1857, serving in the Mutiny at the defence of Cawnpore and at the siege of Lucknow before turn … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAPAN - ATLAS / WORLD MAP / CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND) Yamazaki,
Tenpo 5. 1834. TWO VOLUMES, 76 double page color woodblock maps (41+35), 10 1/8 x 7 inches (26 x 18 cm), Japanese accordion style binding with decorative embossed paper covers. There is worming to many, but not all, of the pages, occasional light soiling to margins, covers quite worn. This beautiful woodblock atlas begins with a map of Japan, which is followed by maps of the individual provinces, and finally a map of the world. This map makes clear the effects on geographic knowledge of Japan's long closure to outside influence: California is mapped as an island and Australia (marked "megaranika" presumably relating to the color of the inhabitants) is joined to New Guinea to the north and to Antarctica at the south examples of outdated geographical knowledge. New Zealand does not appear on the map.

Elliot, Jonathan
Washington: Printed by Jonathan Elliot, Junior, 1834. Two volumes. xxxiii,[3],33-62,[2],556; 78,[2],[81*-116*],81-703pp. Contemporary calf, gilt leather labels, raised bands. Moderate shelf wear and rubbing, corners bumped and worn. Ink stamp on front free endpaper of both volumes, crossed out by black marker pen. Occasional tanning. Very good. This set has an interesting provenance, bearing the ink stamp of the United States Embassy in Mexico City, and earlier spine labels of the "Attorney General's Office." The second volume of this set seems to be the first issue, with the index at the beginning of the volume numbering 16pp., followed by treaties beginning on page 17. In the presumed second issue the index was expanded to twenty-two pages, followed by treaties beginning on page 17. Second, greatly expanded from Elliot's first edition of 1827, of this valuable, early collection of American treaties with foreign nations. Included is the text of all treaties between the United States and foreign powers up to 1833, a diplomatic chronology dating back to 1326, lists of American diplomats and treaty negotiators and their service, lists of foreign ministers to the United States, summaries of relevant judicial opinions, and much more. One of the earliest collections of American treaties, and still quite useful. SABIN 22231. COHEN 7171. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 24283.

[5], [1 blank], 45, [2], [1 blank], 46, [2], 81, [3], 94, [10], 126, [3] [1 blank] [13], [1 blank]; [8], 17, [3], “838” [= 836], [11], [1 blank] pp.The first scholarly printed Quran, prepared by the anti-Islamic Catholic Ludovico Marracci, with a much more accurate Arabic text than any previously printed and the first accurate Latin translation, also including extensive notes based on the Islamic commentaries, as well as the editor's extensive "refutations" of each sutra. Each sura is given first in Arabic, then in Latin translation, followed by notes and then the refutation. The entire first volume of about 430 pages is taken up with preliminary matter, including a 24-page life of Muhammad (one of the first detailed biographies ever printed and again more accurate than its predecessors), an 8-page profession of faith with the Arabic and Latin in parallel columns, and additional commentaries and introductory matter. The fact that this edition was produced explicitly as an attempt to refute the views of Islam has naturally led Islamic scholars to dismiss it, but both the Arabic text and the Latin translation were far better than any previously printed and had no serious rival until the Leipzig edition of 1834. The commentaries also made a great deal of Islamic scholarship available to a European audience for the first time and both the Arabic and the Latin text influenced nearly every edition for the next 150 years. With two bookplates and an occasional early manuscript note and a few letters or numbers inscribed in the foot margin of one leaf.

NEW THEATRE, BRIDGNORTH]
[Bridgnorth]: Gitton, Printer, [1834]. Single leaf handbill. Slightly creased, unevenly trimmed to fore-edge, with some light browning and marking. A rare survival of a playbill for the performances made on the Night of Tuesday 14th February 1834, at the New Theatre Bridgnorth, notably including the two act melodrama The Vampire, or Bride of the Isles by James Robinson Planche (1796-1880), adapted from Charles Nodier's Le Vampire, itself based on Polidori's novella The Vampyre (London, 1819), inspired by Byron's short horror: Fragment of a Novel (composed in 1816, and published in 1819). Planche was directly encouraged to adapt Le Vampire by Arnold, who exercised significant editorial control, preventing, for example, the author's attempts at relocating the setting from Scotland to Hungary. In spite of this, Planche's innovations, including the use of aristocratic sophistication to conceal true demonic nature and the use of the first 'Vampire trap' on the stage allowing for swift entry to and exit from scenes, were pivotal to the development of the vampire in the Gothic tradition and the success of the play. First performed at the Lyceum, London, in 1820, as this playbill demonstrates, the play's popularity ensured that it appeared on both London and provincial stages, such as here at the New Theatre, Bridgnorth (founded 1824), for several decades. Rare. OCLC and COPAC locate copies of five playbills for performances of The Vampire in Bridgnorth between 1825 and 1837, including this very performance - each is known in only a single copy, in the John Johnson collection a … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Latter Day Saints' Messenger and Advocate October 20th, 1834 Leaf from Volume 1 No. 2 Edited by Oliver Cowdery 1834 Leaf! Very Scarce (1) Leaf from an Issue from October of 1834! The Latter Day Saints' Messenger and Advocate, often shortened to Messenger and Advocate, was an early Latter Day Saint monthly newspaper published in Kirtland, Ohio, from October 1834 to September 1837. It was the successor to The Evening and the Morning Star and the predecessor to the Elders' Journal. The Messenger and Advocate was established after a mob had destroyed the printing press of The Evening and the Morning Star in Independence, Missouri, on July 20, 1833, causing the Star to relocate to Kirtland. The May 1835 issue was the last with Cowdery as editor, because there was "other business and other duties, in which my services are requisite." John Whitmer replaced Cowdery as editor.Whitmer may have been heavily assisted in his duties by W. W. Phelps. In March 1836, Cowdery again became editor when both Whitmer and Phelps returned to Missouri. Cowdery's brother Warren claimed that he was actually performing the editorial duties. In February 1837, the printing press was sold to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon, and Warren Cowdery became the editor. The last issue was published in September 1837 after LDS Church leaders became dissatisfied with Warren Cowdery's efforts. In October … [Click Below for Full Description]
