GLEADALL, E. E.
Heath Hall near Wakefield, E.E. Gleadall, 1834-36. 2 volumes. 4to (335 x 250mm). With 2 hand-coloured lithographed titles and 41 hand-coloured lithographed plates. Publisher's gilt pictorial cloth. A fine copy of a rare privately printed flower book, of which the two volumes together are difficult to find. Eliza Eve Gleadall's instruction book on how to paint flowers is one of the most important ones of a genre, which became fashionable in the first half of the 19th century. In a special exhibition at the University of Wisconsin, Madision on 'Women & Nature: Floral Sentiment', in September 2001 Gleandall's book figures as one of the more important items of the exhibition."At the present period, when the studies of youth are arranged so as to blend information with amusement, when the accomplishments are considered merely as the relaxation of the mind, I have thought this volume on Flowers (which comprehends a botanical account of each specimen, the appropriate emblem, accompanied with instructions for copying the design) might afford a chaste recreation, and contribute to encourage a taste for Flowers . . ." (From the introduction). Only 115 copies printed of the first volume and probably less of the second.Rrovenance: Armorial bookplate of Henry Greenwood.Nissen BBI, 715; Dunthorne 123. Amos A. Phelps [Amos Augustus Phelps (1805-1847)]
Boston: The New England Anti-Slavery Society [Garrison and Knapp, Printers], 1834. xi, [1], [13]-284pp. First edition. 12mo. In publisher's original polished cloth; printed paper spine label. Contemporary private library ownership inscriptions of the "Norristown Library Company" of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on both endpapers with their small handwritten catalog label on upper cover and head of spine plus a contemporary "Anti Slavery Office" stencil mark on the free, front endpaper. Spine and covers worn and stained, the handwritten label at head of spine partly perished; both covers detached; fair. First edition, in publisher's original polished cloth, a collection of anti-slavery lectures by Boston abolitionist Amos A. Phelps. This copy with an inscription on the front endpaper saying that the book was "Presented by the Penna. Anti-Slavery Society." A stencil mark on the opposite leaf reads: "From Anti Slavery Office 223 Arch St Philada," this address being the Philadelphia depository of publications by the American Anti-Slavery Society. Amos A. Phelps (1805-1847) was a Congregational Minister in Boston and agent of the American Anti-Slavery Society. He was later associated with the Massachusetts Abolition Society, a group founded in reaction to the more progressive politics (including women's rights) advocated for by abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison.¹ Six appendixes to the text include extracts from speeches on temperance, the slave trade in Sierra Leone and Liberia, "My reasons for abandoning the scheme of Colonization," and a history of slave insurrections. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Patton, Rev. William (editor)
Hartford: D.F. Robinson and H.F. Sumner; stereotyped by James Connor and William R. Cooke, 1834. Hartford: D.F. Robinson and H.F. Sumner; stereotyped by James Connor and William R. Cooke, 1834. Good. 2 vols. Vol 1: [2], 3-736, [2] = 738 pp., with frontispiece and 7 plates. Vol 2: [2], 737-995, [9], 1003-1440, [3] = 711 pp., with engraved frontispiece and 5 plates. Bound in speckled calf, spines lettered in gilt. Covered with provincial American dust jacket of cloth, with holes cut out to show title and volume number on spine (cloth covers with minor wear along spines, slightly soiled, corners bumped). Marbled textblock edges, age-toned, foxing throughout. Tissue guards heavily foxed as commonly. In both volumes the ownership inscription of Mr. Isaac Humeston dated March 8, 1835. A striking example of a home-made American cloth "dust jacket," the likes of which we have not encountered. The jackets cover two publisher's leather bindings on the 1834 Hartford Cottage Bible which -- on account of the ingenious construction of their coverings -- have never seen any sunlight. We have noted identical bindings on Robinson-Sumner's Cottage Bible (Hartford, 1835), always surviving in poor condition. While our home-made jackets appear to have been crudely made, they were in fact remarkably effective, and have continued to protect our copy brilliantly for nearly two centuries. Patton's Cottage Bible remains an excellent example of American book arts at this date, as it is enriched with etchings and engravings by American artists F. Kearney, W. Keenan, J.A. Adams, A. Dick, M. Osbourn … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAWAIIAN IMPRINT] HYMNAL. BINGHAM, Hiram and others
Na na Misionari, Oahu, 1834. Duodecimo, 360 pp., 194 hymns many with full musical notation; in excellent condition in old sprinkled and polished calf, later spine ornately gilt with red leather label; in a full calf protective bookform case. Rare and important: a delightful copy of this Hawaiian hymnal with extensive four-part musical scoring, the very first music to be printed in the Islands. The title translates as 'The rules of music, for hymns and psalms [with which] to praise God.' This title refers to the first section of the work (56 pp.), which is a musical instruction manual, beginning with 'names for various notes (sharps, flats, clefs, etc.) and ways of reading music; then scales and octaves (here La, Mi, Pa, Ko, Li, Ha, No, La); music notes with scores; and finally music and words.' (Forbes) The second part is a hymnal with 194 hymns. Copies were known to have been distributed before the work as a whole was completed (and some copies are known with only the first 56-page section). Following this is a second title-page for 'Na hiimeni Hawaii, me na leomele; oia ka lua o na hapa o ke kumu leomele' (Hawaiian hymns, with their music; the second part of the rules of music). It would appear that the work was issued in a run of 10,000 - the standard figure for many issues from the zealous and active Mission Press. Such enormous original printing figures are in stark contrast to present rarity: only a minute fraction of the original printings have survived, and the few survivors are more often than not in poor condition. This is a particularly attractive example. Proven … [Click Below for Full Description]

BYTAL-PUCHISI
- Printed at the Sobha-Bazar Press, Calcutta 1834, 13x20cm, relié.

BURNS, ROBERT
James Cochrane and Co, London, 1834. 170 x 103 mm. (6 5/8 x 4"). Eight volumes. With a biographical sketch by Allan Cunningham. First Printing of this Edition. Especially attractive contemporary navy half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, spines gilt in scalloped compartments, one blue and one red morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges. One folding manuscript facsimile ("The Blue-eyed Lass") and 17 engraved plates (including one plate with profile and seal of Burns, and eight engraved title pages and frontispieces). Gibson, pp. 46-47; Lowndes I, 326. Paper on a couple of boards very lightly chafed, one page with ink smudge from printing process (not affecting text), other trivial imperfections, but AN EXTREMELY PRETTY SET IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION, the text immaculate, and the bindings absolutely sparkling. This lovely set of the Scottish bard's writings has seen virtually no use, and looks as if it left the bindery yesterday. Published on a monthly basis, beginning in January 1834, this edition was intended to fill six volumes, but in the course of publication, enough poems, letters, and anecdotes were discovered to expand the work to eight. Our editor, Allan Cunningham, whose satisfaction with his work seems to subdue his modesty, says in a note at the beginning of the final volume, "I am not unconscious of having given to the world the most complete and elegant edition which has hitherto appeared of the works of Robert Burns." Indeed, some 100 pieces are added in this edition to the Burns corpus. Like Burns, Cunningham (1784-1842) was a Scot, a man of the people … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERTOLOTTI Davide
Torino,: Tipografi Eredi Botta, 1834. Torino, Tipografi Eredi Botta, 1834. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Patton, Rev. William (editor)
Hartford: D.F. Robinson and H.F. Sumner; stereotyped by James Connor and William R. Cooke, 1834. Good. While our home-made jackets appear to have been crudely made, they were in fact remarkably effective, and have continued to protect our copy brilliantly for nearly two centuries.Patton's Cottage Bible remains an excellent example of American book arts at this date, as it is enriched with etchings and engravings by American artists F. Kearney, W. Keenan, J.A. Adams, A. Dick, M. Osbourne, James Smillie, and J.B. Longacre. The work seems to have been largely ignored by specialists, no … [Click Below for Full Description]

David Hume, Tobias Smollett
London: A. J. Valpy M.A. An ultra rare opportunity to acquire a magnificent complete 1834-1835 set on the history of England beginning with the arrival of Julius Caesar and continuing on with "important events more particularly interesting to the present generation". Each of the 21 volumes is of hunter green leather with beautiful speckled burgundy and amber boards (and matching end papers), and gilt decorated spines with 5 raised bands. The top of the pages is gilded. There are 76 steel engravings (with tissues) from the "Bowyer's History of England" (which were created from paintings by the most eminent masters) of all sovereigns (at the time) "in period-correct costume". Each volume measures approximately 7" x 4 1/4". Pages are in very good condition with minor tanning. The set is in remarkable condition for being 186 years old. Bindings are sound, and the green leather retains vibrant color. The gilt decoration and lettering is still quite bright and shiny. There are several issues commensurate with age. I am not an expert, so I will describe to the best of my ability. There is some chipping to the leather, especially at the spines' top and bottom and rubbing to the board corners. The leather is flaking along the hinges in most volumes. Volumes 1, 4, 8, 16, 17, and 20 (see photo of these 6 books laying flat) either have repairs to the hinges (see photo with two spines) or they are cracked through or close to separating all the way through the entire board or a partial crack all the way through. Some of the boards have blemishes to the speckled paper portion of the cover … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRINSEP, Henry Thoby.
Calcutta: G.H. Huttmann, Military Orphan Press, 1834. Octavo. Original dark green linen, paper label to the spine. Neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, label just a touch chipped and scuffed, no loss of text, light browning throughout, a very good copy. Lithographic portrait frontispiece, printed on finer paper and mounted, plan of the camps for the meeting at Rupnagar, 1831 and a folding lithographic map of the Punjab by Tassin. First and only contemporary edition, a revised edition was published in London in 1846 at the time of the First Anglo-Sikh War. This highly detailed report was originally commissioned in 1830 by the Governor General, William Bentinck, from Capt. William Murray, "who had for more than fifteen years been employed in conducting relations with the Sikh chiefs on the British side of the Sutlej" (Preface). Bentinck's intention was to obtain a closer understanding of power relations in the region better to balance his management of relations between Britain, Ranjit Singh and the "cis-Sutlej Sikh chiefs who had opt[ed] for British protection" (Khurana, British Historiography on Sikh Power in the Punjab, p.32). This was also a time at which "Anglo-Russian relations were at a low key", rousing British anxiety about security on the north-west frontier, which depended "on friendship with Ranjit Singh, and the capacity of the latter to defend himself against an invasion" (p.37) Murray had produced a "voluminous report containing valuable information on all the required points" but unfortunately died before he could edit it for publication. Luther, Seth
Boston: Published by the Author, 1834. 43pp. Modern green cloth, gilt spine title. Faint foxing, small American Antiquarian Society deaccession stamp on verso of last text leaf. Very good. A rare early work by Rhode Island labor organizer Seth Luther, following his first printed work, AN ADDRESS TO THE WORKING-MEN OF NEW-ENGLAND... and his AN ADDRESS ON THE RIGHT OF FREE SUFFRAGE published the previous two years. Seth Luther (1795-1863) was born in Providence, Rhode Island and worked as a carpenter by trade. Like his earlier publications, the present ADDRESS was printed from a speech Luther delivered, this time before the Union Association of Working Men in Charlestown, Massachusetts in late January 1834. Setting the tone for the speech in the first paragraph, Luther rails against those "clothed in purple and fine linen" on the backs "of those who labor day after day." The present work is further described by the DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY, as follows: "[A] denunciation of political and religious as well as economic oppression...the author laid down the following program of reform: universal equal education by means of manual labor schools supported at the public expense; abolition of all licensed monopolies; abolition of capital punishment and of imprisonment for debt...equal taxation for property; and an effective mechanic's lien law. His deadly sincerity, forceful language, grim humor, and biting sarcasm made his pamphlets valuable weapons in the labor movement." Schleiermacher, Friedrich
Berlin: Reimer, 1834. Zweite Ausgabe [Second Edition]. Hardcover. Very good/very good. A Very Good copy of the second edition of this notable work by German theologian, philosopher, and biblical scholar Friedrich Schleiermacher, known for his attempt to reconcile the criticisms of the Enlightenment with traditional Protestant Christianity. Schleiermacher also was influential in the evolution of unorthodox higher criticism. Because of his influence on subsequent Christian thought, Schleiermacher is often referred to as the "Father of Modern Liberal Theology" and is seen as an early leader in liberal Christianity, and his work forms part of the foundation of the modern field of hermeneutics. In a letter to his father dated January 21, 1787, Schleiermacher broke the news of his departure from historical Christian belief stating that: "Faith is the regalia of the Godhead, you say. Alas! dearest father, if you believe that without this faith no one can attain to salvation in the next world, nor to tranquility in this—and such, I know, is your belief—oh! then pray to God to grant it to me, for to me it is now lost. I cannot believe that he who called himself the Son of Man was the true, eternal God; I cannot believe that his death was a vicarious atonement." Instead, Schleiermacher argued that the test for the soundness of any moral system is the completeness of its view of the ends of human life as a whole." [Hart, Joseph C.]
New York: G. & C. & H. Carvill, 1834. Two volumes. 209; 206pp. Half title in both volumes. Original publisher's brown cloth, gilt burgundy morocco spine labels. First volume expertly rebacked, retaining original backstrip, second volume with neat repairs to spine ends. Multiple early ownership inscriptions of Elizabeth Alice Gill. Moderate foxing throughout, occasional tidelines. Good. First edition of the first American whaling novel, written by Joseph C. Hart (1798-1855). Extremely popular at the time of its publication, Hart wrote it in part to encourage congressional support for the whaling industry. Hart spent time researching the industry and interviewing people in the whaling community in Nantucket, and the book remains a useful resource about the whaling days of Nantucket and New Bedford. The story centers on the life of the quasi-fictional Miriam Coffin, and contemporary readers would have easily recognized the real-life Kezia Coffin (1723- 98), wife of Captain John Coffin, a Loyalist with strong British ties and rumored contacts with smugglers. Kezia held a monopoly over trade in Nantucket during the Revolution, and many were forced to borrow from her at exorbitant rates due to trade embargoes and British attacks on Nantucket vessels. Eventually, Nantucket declared neutrality and Kezia's monopoly fell apart. She went bankrupt, lost her home, and was disowned by the Quaker meeting. In the novel, Miriam engages in corrupt financial speculations, which Hart contrasts with her husband's hard work and heroic bearing as he carves out a noble livelihood as a whaler … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schleiermacher, Friedrich
Alas! dearest father, if you believe that without this faith no one can attain to salvation in the next world, nor to tranquility in thisand such, I know, is your beliefoh! then pray to God to grant it to me, for to me it is now lost. I cannot believe that he who called himself the Son of Man was the true, eternal God; I cannot believe that his death was a vicarious atonement." Instead, Schleiermacher argued that the test for the soundness of any moral system is the completeness of its view of the ends of human life as a whole." "Güterlehre" [the theory of Goods -- and a concept of great importance in the present book] refers to the doctrine of the ends to be obtained by moral action.
