Burnside. 1835. 12mo., xv + (1) + 156 + (4)pp., including the half-title and final two advertisement leaves, original cloth, neatly rebacked and lettered to match. A very good copy. First edition: of great rarity. (OCLC & COPAC locate other copies only at Newberry + Birmingham). A 2nd ed. was published in 1836. An anti-duelling essay mustering the moral, Christian, legal and practical reasons why the practice of duelling should cease. 'It was hoped by many, and believed by some few sensible men, that the practice of duelling was very fast decreasing in this favoured country. Recent events, however, have shown that, notwithstanding the great spread of religious feeling in these realms, much yet remains to be done before this national sin can effectually be eradicated. Within a short period we have seen three successive prime ministers of Great Britain, at times of great political excitement and national ferment, engaging in affairs of honour; one fighting a duel, and the other two taking steps that usually lead to it. .....' In fact several more duels would be fought in Britain and Ireland during the following ten years, including the Earl of Cardigan's in 1840. The last fatal duel fought in England was in 1845 when Captain James Seton died in a duel with Lt. Henry Hawkeyon on 2nd June that year.

KeeMeOne (or KeeMeeWun) is listed as a signer of the Fond du Lac treaty of 1826 between the United States and the Chippewa, which re-confirmed the Prairie du Chien treaty ceding rights to mineral expliration and mining in Chippewa land. This treaty was also signed by Lewis Cass, Thomas McKenney, James Otto Lewis and Henry Schoolcraft. The Aboriginal Portfolio represents the first attempt to publish a collection of portraits of North American Indians preceding the works of Catlin, and McKenney and Hall. It is also one of the earliest large projects in American lithography, and one of the first large visual works to deal with subjects beyond the east coast of the United States. The Aboriginal Portfolio was originally published in Philadelphia, for the author, by lithographers George Lehman and Peter S. Duval. It was issued in parts, ten parts of eight plates each being issued; however, due to a loss of subscribers, very few of the last few parts were issued. James O. Lewis was born in Philadelphia in 1799, moved west as a teenager, and had become an engraver and painter by the time he lived in St. Louis in 1820. In 1823 he moved to Detroit, and painted the first of his Indian portraits at the request of Gov. Lewis Cass of Michigan. He accompanied Cass on four Indian treaty expeditions in the Great Lakes region in 1825-27 and painted Indians in the course of each. Virtually all of the originals published here were executed by Lewis in this period. Subsequently, many of the Lewis originals were copied by Charles Bird King, and some appeared in the King versions in the McKenney and Hall portfolio. Cabell

Fine condition.In full, ""I have just received your letter of June 29th, and immediately communicated your object to the Rector of the University with an expression of my confidence in your scientific qualifications for the professorship lately vacated. With friendly respects and good wishes."" Accompanied by a color photocopy of the free franked postmarked leaf addressed by Madison to ""F.R. Hassler, Esq. / Washington City.""Swiss-American mathematician and geodesist, Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler (1770-1843 was the first Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, now the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, from 1816- 1818 and 1832-1843. In 1818, Congress gave the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy responsibility for coastal surveys, so the Survey of the Coast existed without a superintendent, and without conducting any surveys, during the 14 years from 1818-1832 when Congress placed the responsibility for coastal surveying back in the Survey of the Coast.Thomas Jefferson founded and was the first Rector of the University of Virginia from 1819 until his death in 1826. He was succeeded by James Madison who served as Rector until 1834 when he was succeeded by Joseph C. Cabell (1834-1836, 1845-1856).Accompanied by two transcripts, one of Hassler's July 27, 1835, reply to Madison, beginning, ""Your favor of the 2d. inst gave me great satisfaction, I thank to you very much for your kindness of recommending me for the Professorship vacant at the Virginia University. I have since written to Mr: Joseph C: Cabell, Rector of it, in more detail, as by the Prospectus the place is to be filled by the 1.st Septr..."" and one of Cabell on July 25, 1835, replying to Madison's letter to him. In part, ""The vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Doct: Patterson, as I have since been informed by Genl. Cocke, was filled by the appointment of Professor Henry of Princeton. The Genl. has also stated to me confidentially, that in the event of the refusal of Professor Henry to accept the appointment, he was authorized to offer the place to Professor Rodgers, of Wm. & Mary, about whose readiness to take it, there is no doubt. Thus the Vacancy may be considered as having been already filled; and there is now no room for presenting the claims of Mr. Hassler...""Prof. Joseph Henry declined the appointment, later serving as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1846-1878. Prof. William Barton Rodgers was appointed and served as Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Virginia from 1835-1853.MADISON letters regarding the University of Virginia are quite coveted. Four have been offered in the last 20 years at major auctions, averaging over $10,000 each."

Expertly bound to style in dark blue half morocco over contemporary cloth-covered board, original morocco lettering piece on upper cover, the flat spine divided into six compartments by single gilt fillets A fine copy of this important work from one of the greatest early American cartographers. David H. Burr was one of the great American mapmakers of the 19th century. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he began his career leading a road survey through the southern counties of New York for the purpose of building a highway. This led to his being given, in 1829, the responsibility of revising Simeon De Witt's seminal New York State Map of 1804 (under De Witt's direction) to account for the considerable changes that had occurred over the last generation. This and the Atlas of the State of New York he published in 1829 established Burr's prominence in American cartography. The success of his State Atlas persuaded him to aim at a wider audience and publish a general atlas. Ristow states that Burr completed only eight of the 63 maps by 1832 when his involvement in the project was severely curtailed when he accepted the position of topographer for the United States Post Office Department. His maps were engraved by Thomas Illman and Edward Pillbrow and they took over the responsibility for finishing the work, although Burr retained an editorial role, and he was probably able to make use of his new position which gave him access to geographical material sent in from postmasters throughout the land. "As early as 1835, Lobachevsky showed in a memoir [the offered work] the necessity of distinguishing between continuity and differentiability" (Cajori, <i>History of Mathematics</i>, p. 421). This paper was published in the <i>Scientific Memoirs of Kazan University</i>, 1835, No. 2, pp. 211-342. The Kazan publications of Lobachevsky are exceptionally rare, even in Russian collections. OCLC lists the Harvard copy only; we are not aware of any other copy having appeared in commerce.<br/><br/> "It may be observed that Lobachevsky's works in other areas of mathematics were either directly relevant to his geometry (as his calculations on definite integrals and probable errors of observation) or results of his studies of foundations of mathematics (as his works on the theory of finites and the theory of trigonometric series). It is, for example, worth noting that in his algebra Lobachevsky suggested a method of separating roots of equations by their repeated squaring, a method coincident with that suggested by Dandelin in 1826 and by Gräffe in 1837. His paper on the convergence of trigonometric series, too, suggested a general definition of function like that proposed by Dirichlet in 1837. Expertly bound in recent half tan calf over marbled boards, with blind ruling to leather, and direct gilt lettering to spine. Customary five raised bands at spine show gilt tooling. All edges speckled grey. Illustrated with 31 plates ?- including: 6 maps and charts (some outlined in colour, two of which are folding), 24 views (3 of which are hand-coloured), and an additional engraved plate of Victoria Harbour from a drawing by Ross. Externally fine with no visible signs of wear. Text shows occasional browning, foxing and marking to plates, although this is generally light. A very handsome copy, attractively presented. After the embarrassment of Ross's first voyage, and having lost the confidence of the British Admiralty, he failed to find private backing for an entire decade. In this second voyage, Ross travels through Lancaster Sound, into Prince Regent inlet and onto Boothia Peninsula, and finds remnants of Parry's ship 'Fury'. For four consecutive years Ross and his men were stuck in the ice, wisely using this time to learn mapping, hunting, sewing, transportation and language skills from the local Inuit population. Ross also organized lectures, lessons, and scientific inquiries, one of which discovered the North Magnetic Pole. In 1832, Ross finally abandoned the ship, and managed to live on supplies found at Parry's wreck. In a remarkable turn of events, a whaler rescued Ross and his crew in 1833, in the selfsame vessel which Ross had commanded on his first voyage.

      Philadelphia: published by Thomas T. Ash, 1835. Aquatint by Hill after Shaw, lightly coloured by hand. Good condition. In fine French wash-line mat. A rare example of a print from an extremely rare work that is now considered to be a 'milestone in American printmaking ... a foundation book for American color-plate publication, being the first publication in the United States of large colored landscapes essentially scenic in effect" (Koke). This atmospheric image of a moonlit scene near Fayetteville is from a suite of twenty plates published under the general title 'Picturesque Views of American Scenery'. The original intention had been to publish 36 plates in six parts but the work was abandoned after only four parts had appeared (published primarily by Matthew Carey & Son). Thomas Ash acquired the rights to the set and republished them in 1835. Any examples from either edition are now rare. Joshua Shaw, a British-born landscape artist of note, was inspired by the magificence of the American landscape ("in no other quarter of the globe are the majesty and loveliness of nature more strikingly conspicuous than in America."). Shaw set out to popularise the picturesque in America. His beautiful images were skillfully interpreted by engraver John Hill and the results can rightly be said to have been one of elements which led to the growth of what became the Hudson River School of landscape painting. The popularity of the Hudson River School from the mid-1820s onwards, paid dividends for the Shaw's work as well and Thomas Ash was encouraged to reprint the series in 1835. Deak 315.10; cf.         Pteroglossus Humboldtii / Humboldt's Aracari

      [London: by the Author, 1835. Hand-coloured lithograph by John and Elizabeth Gould, printed by C. Hullmandel. Wove paper. Very good condition. A fine image from the first edition of John Gould's "A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans." The toucan family is limited to Mexico, Central and South America and some West Indian islands. The first time that any member of the family was described was by Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes in his "de la natural hystoria de las Indias." (Toledo, 1526, chapter 42) In 1555 Pierre Belon included an illustration of its beak in his "L'Histoire de la nature des oyseaux." (Paris, 1555, p.184) Andre Thevet first used the name "Toucan" with a long description, and a woodcut of a whole bird, in his "Singularitez de la France" (Paris, 1555, pp.88-90). The Latin name "Burhynchus" or "Ramphestes" (in reference to the size of the beak) was suggested by Conrad Gesner ("Icones Avium", 1560, p.130), and Linnaeus later adopted Aldrovandus's corrupted form of the latter ("Ramphastos"), which is how the family was still recognized at the time of the publication of the present image. The present image is from the first edition of Gould's work, published in 1833-1835, which represented the first concerted attempt to produce a monograph on the family. A second expanded edition was published between 1852 and 1854. Gould considered this to be a completely separate work as the plates were all re-drawn and the text re-written. Cf. Anker 170; cf.       San Salvador, Cojutepeque, & elsewhere: Various publishers/printers Folio and other, smaller formats. Various paginations.. 1835–63 Following the achievement of independence from Spain in 1821, El Salvador along with the rest of Central America had a brief flirtation with being part of Mexico, but with the fall of Iturbide and the collapse of the first Mexican empire, El Salvador and the rest of Central America formed a confederation, with Guatemala being the more equal of the supposed five equals. The Confederation itself collapsed as unworkable in 1838 and following the dissolution of it, the political and social history of El Salvador was characterized by a wrenching dynamic of Liberal vs. Conservative forces each wanting to control society and the government. But added to that were the ambitions of its neighbors, especially Guatemala, and occasionally Honduras and even Nicaragua. Then there was the problem of Britain and its citizens' investments in the country and the need to protect those interests. This assemblage provides rare documents on many of the issues and the personalities of the era. Of the 26 publications, we find only 8 to be held in U.S. libraries, mostly at only one library (two being held at two). A full list available and the condition statement below is keyed to it. Generally good to very good condition unless otherwise noted: Item 1) waterstained and with paper damage with loss in foremargin; 4) much worming, mostly in margins but also in text, touching but not costing letters; 5) totally browned; 9 & 10) in recent wrappers; 11) water damage to upper outer corner with loss of paper; 12) recent wrappers, cockling of paper and a few stray stains; 13) recent wrappers, small hole in blank portion of title-page, light waterstaining at base of same; 14) recent wrappers, a few stains; 17) two very small pin-type wormholes in text, touching but not costing letters; 20) light age-toning.
