A Narrative of the Supposed Inhuman Murder of an Infant, By Its...

1834. London, 1834. 10" x 7-1/2" Broadside Account of an Infanticide in London [Broadside]. [Infanticide]. [Chalice, Harriet]. A Narrative of the Supposed Inhuman Murder of an Infant, by Its Mother! With Full Particulars of Her Confession. [London]: G. Smeeton, Printer, 74, Tooley Street, [c.1834]. 10" x 7-1/2" broadside. Single-column text below headline. Moderate toning, some edgewear and a few tiny chips, a few creases to corners. $650. * This broadside offers an account in two parts. The first part, "extracted from the Weekly Dispatch, Sept. 7, 1834," is an account of the discovery of the baby's body prior to the coroner's inquest. The second part, from the Morning Advertiser, September 9, 1834, records the conclusions of the inquest. The defendant, Harriet Chalice, a household servant, was declared guilty of concealing the birth of a child, who was stillborn. Having hid her pregnancy, she delivered her baby herself, then threw the baby out of a window. Chalice's fate is unknown; the broadside says she "became exceedingly ill" after disposing of her baby and "sunk into exhaustion...without the least hope of recovery." OCLC locates 1 copy (Harvard Law School).

        Qur’an: Corani textus arabicus

Leipzig.,1834 - First Flugel Edition. Text printed in black within red borders, some decorative. Attractive contemporary binding of quarter red morocco. Flugel’s Koran summarized all previous efforts of European Orientalists and took an important step in the presentation of the original Arabic text of the Qur’an to the West. The first edition of Flügel’s work included a kind of introductory notes, the Arabic text and subsequent index of the suras. The editor explains that he also used the most authoritative tafsirs. The font used for the Qur’an is really clear and easy to read; the vowels are printed with great accuracy. Undoubtedly, Flügel’s work is the best publication of the Arabic Qur’an printed in the West since the sixteenth century. This text, generally vocalized in accordance with the reading of hafs‘an ‘Asim, has been really suitable for the translation of the meanings of the Qur’ān and for use in academic and religious works.

Paris, Rousseau/ Baillière, (1834-1880). 11 volumes (bound in 12). Royal-8vo (240 x 160mm). With 902 fine handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary publisher's cloth, spines with gilt lines and lettering. A fine copy of one of the most beautiful shell books ever made, illustrated with handcoloured engravings. The set belonged to the famous Spanish conchologist J. Hidalgo, with some pencil annotations in the text and separate inserted handwritten lists in some of the volumes. Kiener made use of the famous Delessert collection and that of the Natural History Museum of Paris, together the largest and most varied fund of conchological material on the continent. "He soon put it to good use; and in 1834 he published the first part of his 'Spécies ...' This exquisitely illustrated iconography, started before the Sowerbys and Reeve began to issue theirs, appeared at intervals up to 1879, when eleven volumes had been completed. All devoted to the illustration of marine gastopods with the exception of the tenth volume, which includes a monograph on the bivalve genus Thracia. The eleventh volume is the work of Paul Fischer. All the illustrations are by celebrated French engravers and artists of the day." (Dance. Hist. of Shell Collecting p. 137). This beautifully illustrated iconography on shells is still a valuable work of reference because of the new species described in it. The work is complete with 902 handcoloured plates as indicated in the last volume, where the publisher 'Ballière' informs the reader that the work consists of 165 parts with a total of 902 plates. Nissen, however, calls for a 20bis plate in the Cypraea section which, indeed, some copies have. Most likely only the early issues have this 'bis' plate, which was probably replaced by a corrected plate 20 in later issues. In the text this 'bis' plate is not mentionned. The plates of the present set are very fine and clean, however, there is foxing to the text.//Nissen ZBI, 2183; B.M.(Nat. Hist.)II, 978.

        o. T. [Gebirgsbach]. Oel auf Leinwand.

76 x 103 cm, Tadellos, gerahmt Unten rechts monogrammiert T S 64. Traugott Schieß (1834 St. Gallen - 1869 München). Landschaftsmaler. An account of the transactions of His Majesty's mission to the court of Persia in the years 1807-11; To which is appended, a brief history of the Wahauby. [ In 2 Volumes ]

London: James Bohn, 1834. ''The first political and commercial treaty between Great Britain and Persia was concluded in 1801; when the East India Company sent John Malcolm to the Court of Fath Ali Shah. Persia undertook to attack the Afghans if they were to move against India, while the British undertook to come to the defence of Persia if they were attacked by either the Afghans or the French. When the Russians intensified their attacks on the Caucasian Provinces in 1803 annexing large territories, Fath Ali Shah appealed to the British for help, but was refused on the ground that Russia was not included in the Treaty. The Persians thus turned to the French and concluded the Treaty of Finkenstein in 1807. It was against this background that Harford Jones, who was the chief resident at Basra for the East India Company, was sent to Persia by the Foreign Office in 1809... The French who had now entered into a treaty with Russia (the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807) had lost interest in Persia and removed their political and military missions. Thus the British were able to conclude another treaty with Persia (the Treaty of Friendship and Alliance, also called the Treaty of Tehran) which bound Britain to assist Persia in case any European nation invaded her (even if Britain had a treaty with that nation). This treaty was not honoured by the British after the first Persian-Russian War. There were two later revisions to the Treaty: 17 March 1812 and 25 November 1814'' (Ghani). Volume 2 is devoted exclusively to the Wahabis, tracing their history from the mid-eighteenth century to their defeat by Egyptian Ottoman forces at the site of the Wahabi capital, Daryah (Dereyah), in 1818.A nice 2 volume first edition set. Now bound in Half Leather, with leather corner pieces, 5 raised bands and gilt titles. Please not the Collation of this set. Volume 1: lacks the preface consisting of viii pages, and lacks the tile page, thereafter p.472, starting from half title 'The Mission', xxxiv [ ii ], 8 lithograph plates. [ this volume I believe should have 9 plates ] Volume 2: [ ii ], Full title page, p.238, nice folding Map to rear. [ I believe there should be a frontispiece plate to this volume ] All pages present clean, if with some sporadic foxing, mainly to margins. Still a desirable and uncommon title. { representative images to follow }. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall.

On a general Method in Dynamics; by which the Study of the Motions of all free Systems of attracting or repelling Points is reduced to the Search and Differentiation of one central Relation, or characteristic Function" WITH "Second Essay on a general Method in Dynamics" Parts I and II Extracted from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1834 and 1835

FIRST EDITIONS OF HAMILTON'S FAMOUS TWO 'ESSAYS' ON DYNAMICS, SEMINAL WORKS IN WHICH HE DEVELOPS THE WHOLE OF THEORETICAL DYNAMICS BY THE AID OF ONE CENTRAL FUNCTION, HIS 'CHARACTERISTIC' (or 'principal') FUNCTION. "The analogies Hamilton establishes in these papers between geometrical optics and mechanics would go on to play a fundamental role in all of modern physics and provide the basis of Schrodinger's formulation of wave mechanics" (Sophia Rare Books). In the first essay, Hamilton "defines his characteristic function by analogy with his researches in optics, and develops its chief properties for a general system of points in any system of coordinates. The remainder of the paper is devoted to methods of approximation with a view to applying them to perturbations of astronomical bodies. At the end he introduces another function, the [characteristic or] principal function, which he develops in the second essay. [In the second essay] Hamilton develops the properties of the principal function in much the same way as in the previous Essay, but here established for the first time his well-known equations of motion. He applies his method to a case of planetary motion, using a system of canonical elements" (Introduction, The Mathematical Paper of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, xiii). Hamilton then argues that the "tool of the characteristic function could also be applied to reformulate the fundamental laws of dynamics; thus the actual motion of mass point in a field of forces, e.g., is found to be governed by equations that are the analogues of those determining the propagation of the rays of light. Hamilton's optical-mechanical analogy, not only provided a new and more powerful formulation of classical mechanics but also, came to form the foundation of the Schrödinger scheme of quantum mechanics, e.g., wave mechanics. "Hamilton introduced the methods of geometrical optics into mechanics and obtained an equation similar to the iconal equation and now known as the Hamilton-Jacobi differential equation. In it the index of refraction is replaced, essentially, by the potential energy and mass of the mechanical particle. In Hamilton's work Schrödinger thus found an analogy between mechanics and geometrical optics. And, since geometrical optics 'is only a gross approximation for light,' he conjectured that the same cause was responsible for the failure of classical mechanics 'in the case of very small orbital dimensions and very strong orbital curvature'"(Sophia Rare Books). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Richard Taylor. 4to. Extracted from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1834 and 1835. 11 x 8.75 inches; 12 x 9.25 inches (the volumes these were extracted from were slightly differently sized). Part I: pp. 247-308; Part II: 25-144. Complete. Clean and bright. Near fine condition in every way.

- - - - - - First Edition. For Legallois, see D.S.B. 8: 132-35, where this work is mentioned but not discussed. The contents are: Fragment d'un mémoire sur le temps durant lequel les jeunes animaux peuvent être, sans danger, privés de la respiration, soit à l'époque de l'accouchement, lorsqu'ils n'ont point encore respire, soit à différents âges après leur naissance.
