On a general Method in Dynamics; by which the Study of the Motions of all free Systems of attracting or repelling Points is reduced to the Search and Differentiation of one central Relation, or characteristic Function" WITH "Second Essay on a general Method in Dynamics" Parts I and II Extracted from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1834 and 1835

FIRST EDITIONS OF HAMILTON'S FAMOUS TWO 'ESSAYS' ON DYNAMICS, SEMINAL WORKS IN WHICH HE DEVELOPS THE WHOLE OF THEORETICAL DYNAMICS BY THE AID OF ONE CENTRAL FUNCTION, HIS 'CHARACTERISTIC' (or 'principal') FUNCTION. "The analogies Hamilton establishes in these papers between geometrical optics and mechanics would go on to play a fundamental role in all of modern physics and provide the basis of Schrodinger's formulation of wave mechanics" (Sophia Rare Books). In the first essay, Hamilton "defines his characteristic function by analogy with his researches in optics, and develops its chief properties for a general system of points in any system of coordinates. The remainder of the paper is devoted to methods of approximation with a view to applying them to perturbations of astronomical bodies. At the end he introduces another function, the [characteristic or] principal function, which he develops in the second essay. [In the second essay] Hamilton develops the properties of the principal function in much the same way as in the previous Essay, but here established for the first time his well-known equations of motion. He applies his method to a case of planetary motion, using a system of canonical elements" (Introduction, The Mathematical Paper of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, xiii). Hamilton then argues that the "tool of the characteristic function could also be applied to reformulate the fundamental laws of dynamics; thus the actual motion of mass point in a field of forces, e.g., is found to be governed by equations that are the analogues of those determining the propagation of the rays of light. Hamilton's optical-mechanical analogy, not only provided a new and more powerful formulation of classical mechanics but also, came to form the foundation of the Schrödinger scheme of quantum mechanics, e.g., wave mechanics. "Hamilton introduced the methods of geometrical optics into mechanics and obtained an equation similar to the iconal equation and now known as the Hamilton-Jacobi differential equation. In it the index of refraction is replaced, essentially, by the potential energy and mass of the mechanical particle. In Hamilton's work Schrödinger thus found an analogy between mechanics and geometrical optics. And, since geometrical optics 'is only a gross approximation for light,' he conjectured that the same cause was responsible for the failure of classical mechanics 'in the case of very small orbital dimensions and very strong orbital curvature'"(Sophia Rare Books). - - - - - - First Edition.

Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1834 BOUND FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST APPEARANCE & FORMULATION OF LENZ'S 1833 LAW, stating that "The direction of current induced in a conductor by a changing magnetic field due to Faraday's law of induction will be such that it will create a field that opposes the change that produced it" (Lenz). Obeying both Newton's third law of motion and the conservation of energy, Lenz's law explains the physical meaning of the negative sign in Faraday's law. It was "the first explanation of the choice of sign in Faraday's law of induction and served as the basis for Helmholtz's proof of the law of conservation of energy for electromagnetic phenomena" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). At the beginning of the nineteenth century scientists were beginning to understand electricity and magnetism, but did not understand the relationships between the two. In this paper, Russian physicist Heinrich Friedrich Emil Lenz (1804-1865) took one of the first steps in filling in that gap by formulating Lenz's Law. Lenz was puzzled by the effects of magnets when they were pushed into coils of wire as they produced an electric current. Repeating the work of James Faraday, he observed that when a electrical current is generated by a changing magnetic field, the magnetic field generated by that electrical current opposes the magnetic field that generated the current. Lenz's study "explains why the direction of the induced electromotive force (EMF) and induced current resulting from electromagnetic induction is the opposite direction to the change in flux (i.e., opposes the change in flux)" (ibid). His law is a manifestation of the conservation of energy. The induced EMF produces a current that opposes the change in flux, because a change in flux means a change in energy. Energy can enter or leave, but not instantaneously. Lenz' law is a consequence. This result is due to the law of conservation of energy. Lenz's results were copiously documented so that they could be easily repeated and his quantitative results were more thorough than the qualitative work that had been done previous to him. CONDITION & DETAILS: Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth. Complete bound volume. 8vo.[x], 678 pages, [2]. Four fold-out plates. Blind perforated library stamp on the title page; no spine or other markings. Tightly and solidly bound in brown cloth, slightly scuffed at the edges. Clean and bright throughout.         Polynesian Researches During a Residence of Nearly Eight Years in the Society and Sandwich Islands. 4-vol. set (Complete)

Fisher, Son, & Jackson, London 1834 - 12mo. XVI, 414, 438, 407, 471pp. 3/4 crushed morocco over decorative cloth. Frontispiece portrait of Pomare. Engraved half-title page in each volume. Fascinating narrative of the author's journey in Polynesia where he spent a number of years, endeavoring to promote the knowledge of Christianity among the natives. While engaged in this pursuit, Ellis regarded it as perfectly consistent with his office, and compatible with its duties, to collect information on various subjects relative to the country and its inhabitants. Although circumscribed in geographical extent, and comparatively insignificant in amount of population, the Society and Sandwich Islands have been regarded with unusual interest ever since their discovery. The descriptions given to the public, of the loveliness of their general appearance and the peculiar character and engaging manners of their inhabitants, have excited a strong desire to obtain additional information relative to the varied natural phenomena of the Islands themselves, the early history; the moral, intellectual, and physical character of the people, and the nature of their ancient institutions. This study is profusely illustrated with 1 folding chart, 2 folding maps, and numerous wood and steel engravings. Some age-wear on binding with spines and joints heavily rubbed, with abrasion on morocco. Closed tears on joints, but boards holding firmly. Previous owners' bookplates on inside of front boards, free front endpapers and rear endpapers. The folding chart is a facsimile of the original one, which was missing in this work. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Bindings in overall fair, interior in good+ to very good condition. Second edition completely revised and greatly expanded [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Vom Kriege. Hinterlassenes Werk. 3 Bände. (= Hinterlassene Werke des Generals Carl von Clausewitz über Krieg und Kriegführung, Bde. 1-3).

Berlin, Ferdinand Dümmler, 1832-1834. - Erstausgabe. History of New Jersey .

1834 - GORDON, THOMAS F. The History of New Jersey, from its Discovery by Europeans, to the Adoption of the Federal Constitution. Trenton, 1834. xii, 339 p. [Bound with:] A Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey, Comprehending a General View of its Physical and Moral Condition, Together with a Topographical and Statistical Account of its Counties, Towns, Villages, Canals, Rail Roads, &c. Trenton, 1834. iv, 266 p. Handcolored folding map (very skillfully and unobtrusively repaired on the verso). Contemporary sheep (light scuffs at the extremities but very tight). Text foxed, as with all copies of this book. A very desirable copy. The second history of New Jersey, bound with, as issued, the first gazetteer of the state. The latter is an essential reference tool for locating early towns and communities, and it remained the only gazetteer of New Jersey for almost fifty years. This is one of the cornerstone New Jersey books, and copies are usually found without the map and in dry, lifeless bindings. This copy is unusually nice and tight. For a lengthy study of this important book, see Felcone, New Jersey Books, 726-727.

War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes

1834. (MCKENNY, Thomas and HALL, James) RINDISBACHER, Peter. War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes. Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle (Childs & Lehman, lithographers), 1834. Original hand-colored lithograph (sheet measures 21 by 15 inches); window matted, entire piece measures 23 by 20 inches. $1800.Original hand-colored lithograph from McKenney and HallÂ’s monumental Indian Tribes of North America. An early specialist in watercolor scenes of frontier life, Swiss-born Peter Rindisbacher is credited as being ""the first pioneer artist recording genre of Western Indians"" (Samuels, 400). His ""War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes"" (1834) served as the frontispiece for Volume II of the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's famous History of the Indian Tribes of North America (1838). Thomas McKenney, long-time Superintendent of Indian Affairs under Presidents Madison, Monroe, Adams and Jackson, often dreamt of an Indian Archive, ""preserved for the information of future generations and long after the Indians will have been no more."" Over a number years, McKenney commissioned paintings which were produced as hand-colored lithographs by several printing houses— among them Childs, Inman, Lehman and Duval. The first volume of McKenney's portfolio was published in February 1837, a culmination of eight years of effort. The book met with great success and subscriptions swelled. This fine hand-colored lithograph of Rindisbacher's Sauk and Fox Dance of the Wabanna was documented by McKenney as ""drawn on the spot as the scene was actually exhibited. The actors are persons of some note, and the faces are faithful likenesses"" (Horan, 166). It also appeared in Murray's Travels in North America (London, 1839), one of the earliest western travel books. Impression fine, colors true, lightly embrowned. A handsome print.
