        Fragmens Psychologiques Sur La Folie

nbsp;Paris -Crochard, Librarie Editeur, 1834 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Psychological Fragments Of Madness. First editionIncludes information on hallucinations, visions and the terror of damnation. Leuret was an important figure in the early days of French psychiatry. He stressed the importance of using a rational and humane approach in treatment of the mentally ill, and also believed that the criminally insane were sick individuals who were incapable of controlling their behavior. He felt that the origins of mental illness were unknown, and that it was wrong to define madness from only a somatic standpoint. Leuret's psychiatric theories put him at odds with other French physicians, particularly those who thought that the source of mental illness could be localized to a specific part of the brain's anatomy. Condition: In paper wraps. Externally, chipping to paper wraps, small close tears and fading. Internally, generally firmly bound with marks to the odd page, bright and clean. There are labels to the endpapers. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

Mannheim, 1834.. 2 S., 4°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u.

The animal kingdom, arranged according to its organization, serving as a foundation for the natural history of animals and an introduction to comparative Anatomy.... with figures designed after Nature...by M. Latreille...translated from the latest French edition. With additional notes, and illustrated by nearly 500 additional plates. In four volumes

London, G. Henderson, 1834-1837. Four parts in eight (four text and four plate volumes). 8vo. Text with seven engraved portraits. Plate volumes with 736 engraved plates of which 698 are hand-coloured (as intended). Original uniform black half calf over marbled boards with gilt linings, spines richly gilted with two dark red morocco labels containing gilt titles. Marbled edges, marbled endpapers.l Georges Léopold Chrétien Frédéric Dagobert baron de Cuvier (1769-1832) was one of the foremost French geologists, palaeontologists, zoologists and comparative anatomists, and certainly the first to integrate these disciplines. This resulted in his influential Règne Animal distribué d'après son Organisation pour servir de base à l'Histoire Naturelle des Animaux et d'introduction à l'Anatomie Comparée (1817, revised 1830) of which this is the first literal translation into English, with many footnotes discussing additional facts and opinions. This edition should not be confused with the near simultaneously published reworked edition of Cuvier's magnum opus, edited by Edward Griffith and Edward Pidgeon, and also known as "The Animal Kingdom". The latter is much more common. The text-parts have 1-2 engraved portraits (tissue-guarded Cuvier (frontis to part I), John James Audubon (at the beginning of the birds-section of part I), Linnaeus (frontis to part II), Buffon (in part II), Latreille (frontis to part III), William Kirby (frontis to part IV), and William Spence (in part IV). The subdivision of the plate volumes is as follows: I Mammals and Birds: 80, and 116 plates; II Reptiles and Fishes: 43, 153; III Mollusca, Annelides, Crustacea, Arachnides: 79, 11, 59, 50; IV Insecta, Zoophytes 121, 24. In other words, a complete copy, as called for in the plate captions and index, including two plates not called for in the plate descriptions, and six numbers separately listed in the text (and counted by Nissen) but combined on two plates and not counted apart, and disregarding 12 plate numbers that have never been used. Nissen mentions "789 Tafeln", but among his errors the gravest is 99 plates for Arachnides (should be 51). Some scuffing to boards and, very lightly, to spine ends. Two short tears in one index leaf, five b/w plates with a small water stain in the top inner corner, (apparently stained before binding), small bookplate on front pastedown of all volumes. In all, an exceptional set in a fine binding. Nissen ZBI, 1016.

Map of the State of New York Compiled from the Latest Authorities

      S. Augustus Mitchell, Philadelphia 1834 - Full period color, 17 x 20½ inches, folding into gilt-stamped brown leather covers. Statistical table laid down on inside front cover. Five insets (see below). Minor repairs. This is the second pocket map edition of D. H. Vance's map of New York State with the imprint of S. Augustus Mitchell. Mitchell had purchased the plate from Anthony Finley in 1831, removed Vance's name, added a new border, and included it in his edition of the A New American Atlas (1831). The map was first issued as a pocket map by Mitchell in 1832. With the 1832 edition, Mitchell replaced the inset, "Profile of the Erie Canal," with four insets: "Vicinity of Albany," "Vicinity of New York," "Vicinity of the Falls of Niagara" and "Vicinity of Rochester." With this 1834 edition the statistical table at right was replaced by an inset "Map of the Hudson River." Numerous new towns are present throughout, and distances in miles along roads between towns have been added. New York's first railroads are also included for the first time. The title has been moved from the upper left to the lower left corner. This edition is not listed in Rumsey nor in Phillips. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

At the same time the Papacy, unwilling to offend Spain, condemned the revolutions sweeping South America at the time, which created additional tensions within Argentina. The Memorial Ajustado was written by Agrelo, the primary author of the 1813 Proyecto de Constitucion Argentina. It intended to clarify sections in the constitution concerning church-state relations.         Bibliotheca Heberiana

16 vols. bound in 6. 8vo, cont. patterned cloth (Vols. 1-13), modern cloth (Vols. 14-15), & orig. wrappers (Ghent sale). London: Sotheby, Evans, or Wheatley (Vols. 1-13), Paris: Silvestre (Vols. 14 & 15), & Ghent: Ch. Citerne, 1834-37. The auction catalogues of the library of Richard Heber are very rare; this set is complete and includes the very rare Ghent catalogue of 26 Oct. 1835. "The Dibdinian age may be aptly said to terminate with the dispersal of the gigantic library accumulated by Richard Heber (1773-1833), a bibliomaniac if ever there was one...From 1800 to 1830, he purchased at every London sale, either in his own name or through agents like Triphook and Thorpe. He thought of nothing of securing whole libraries at a time. When he died, his books filled two houses in London, one at Hodnet, one at Oxford, one at Ghent and one at Paris, not to speak of smaller stores at Brussels, Antwerp and other Continental cities. The total number of volumes in his library must have been between two and three hundred thousand, and it is doubtful whether any private individual has ever owned so large a library... "The dispersal of the Heber library took no less than sixteen sales, thirteen in London by Evans, Sotheby and Wheatley, two in Paris and one in Ghent...The Heber catalogues, although badly compiled and arranged in the most inconvenient manner, are daily consulted by every bibliographer... "Heber's library, although it contained books of every description and in every language, was especially strong in literature and in history. His series of Continental books, early Italian and Spanish works, later Latin poetry, humanistic treatises of the Renaissance, were unrivalled. He owned a very large number of early French books... "The real strength of Heber's library was, however, in the field of early English literature, especially poetry and the drama. For thirty years he collected systematically and purchased nearly every item which came on the market."-De Ricci, pp. 102-04. Fine set from the library of E.P. Goldschmidt. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, cols. 469-70 & 566-68. .

        L'Antotrofia Ossia La Coltivazione De'Fiori

Firenze 1834 - 24 hand-colored botanical plates. Red half leather binding, with marbled boards, four raised bands to the spine, and gilt lettering and detailing to the spine. Unfortunately, there is a 4" x 1" light dampstain at the head of every leaf for about the first half of the book. Otherwise the interior is clean, unmarked and quite bright, with only occasional slight foxing. If not for the dampstaining to the first plates, every plate would be in very good to near fine condition. Rear hinge is starting, and front hinge is holding on by only one seam. The leather is cracked about 3" at the tail and 1.75" at the head of the front gutter. Three fore-corners are rubbed through the leather to expose the cardboard below, and the marbled paper is slightly chipped along the lower edge. Otherwise the leather and boards are only slightly scuffed (and look nicer than most books of this age). Gilt remains quite bright. This copy is protected in a lightly rubbed acetate dust jacket. Overall, we are grading the book as fair condition, although parts of it are very good or better. We are happy to send more photos upon request. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Watercolour study of Birds

1834. Watercolour. Painted on Whatman paper dated 1831. Paintings of both sides of the sheet. In excellent condition. A stunning watercolour study of a demoiselle crane, curmoor, a crow, various thrushes Unfortunately we have not been able to discover any information concerning the artist of this charming watercolour. It is numbered and titled within the image but it bears no signature or date. It is obviously from the hand of an accomplished amateur painter who had a natural talent design and keen eye for detail. Amateur animal and flower painting became extremely popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century as a favored pursuit for aristocratic women. Painting was viewed as a necessary talent for young women, and was eagerly pursued and practiced by the upper classes. This skillful painting appears to be a watercolour study of an illustrated natural history text. Published scientific texts such as this were printed throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century and commonly included illustrations of both flora and fauna specimens. The numbering and titles further confirm that this is a study from a printed source, since this method of identifying specimens was typically used in published volumes. Lovingly rendered and carefully painted, this skillful watercolour is a true work of art.

The Ladies' Flower-Garden [comprising] ornamental annuals; ornamental perennials (2 volumes); ornamental bulbous plants; ornamental greenhouse plants; British wild flowers.

London William Smith -1849 1834 - 5 works bound in 6 volumes, 4to (27 x 22cm.), first editions of Ornamental Perrenials & Ornamental Greenhouse plants, 303 (of 304) hand-coloured lithograph plates (47+95+58+60+42), occasional light spotting, original green cloth gilt, pictorial vignettes to spine and upper covers, spines faded to tan, neat repairs to extremities, a very good set. An ttractive set including two first editions of loudon's popular botantical works, containing a wealth of handsome hand-coloured lithographs. Loudon began her literary career with a strange futuristic novel entitled The Mummy (1827), and only began to write botanical works after her marriage to and work alongside John Loudon, the horticultural publisher and writer. Aware that the abundance of technical terms in horticultural books were off-putting to new gardeners, particularly women, she went about making gardening an accessible recreational activity. A self-taught artist, Loudon ranks as one of the most successful female botanical illustrators. Her artistic style, which involved grouping flowers to form delicate bouquets, though unusual for the time was immediately accepted among gardeners. Her attractive illustrations, known for their bright colour, became extremely sought after and were often imitated in designs for decorative products. Nissen BBI 1253, 1237, 1235, 1233, 1236.
