Die Polizei-Wissenschaft nach den Grundsätzen des Rechtsstaates.

Tübingen, Laupp 1832-1833. - 2 Bände. 8°. XIV, [1] Bl., 579 S.; VIII, [1] Bl., 530 S., [1] Bl. Pbde. d. Zt. mit goldgepr. Rückensch. ADB XXII, 745 f. NDB XVII, 692 ff. - Seltene erste Ausgabe. A view of the early Parisian Greek press; including the lives of the Stephani; notices of other contemporary Greek printers of Paris; and various particulars of the literary and ecclesiastical history of their times.

Oxford: Pr. by S. Collingwood for D.A. Talboys, 1833. 8vo (23 cm, 9.1"). 2 vols. I: xix, [1], 412 pp. II: vii, [1], 413, [1] pp. First edition of this account of the Estiennes and other important printers of their milieu, including much information on, excerpts from, and commentary on classical literature (many quotations being supplied in English translation in addition to the original languages) as well as details of political, cultural, and religious history of the time. The preface is signed by the Rev. William Parr Greswell, known as a scholar of Parisian typography, and the title-page attributes the editing to his son Edward Greswell. While Brunet was not wholly convinced regarding the Greswells' exactitude, he nevertheless concluded that this work made for an interesting read.    Bindings: 20th-century speckled calf framed and panelled 17th century–style in double blind fillets with blind-tooled corner fleurons, middle panels in plain calf, innermost panels framed with blind roll; spines with gilt-stamped leather title-labels, raised bands, and blind-tooled composite motifs in compartments => done by a modern master. Back pastedown of vol. I with pencilled note reading "Bound by Bernard Middleton [/] Feb. '62."    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.         Brunet, II, 1735; Lowndes, IV, 943; NSTC 2G21923. Bindings as above; joints and edges rubbed, spines evenly sunned, minor scuffing to sides. Front pastedown of vol. I with pencilled annotation of old purchase price. Page edges untrimmed; a few leaves in vol. II with very short tears from outer margins, not touching text; faint age-toning and intermittent instances of light spotting, mostly but not entirely in upper outer corners. Vol. I with one 20th-century pencilled marginal annotation, vol. II with one pencilled date correction. => A good example of 19th-century scholarship on printing and literary history, here in a lovely demonstration of 20th-century binding technique.

Original costume design for Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades [Pikovaya Dama (Pique Dame)] by the noted Russian artist Alexandre Benois for the character of the Kaufmannstochter (the Merchant's Daughter) in Act I, scene 1

Pique Dame, in three acts, op. 68, by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky to a libretto by Modest Tchaikovsky and the composer after Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin's novella (1833) was first performed in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre on December 7/19 1890. "The entire opera was composed in Florence in 44 days of frenzied inspiration (30 January-14 March 1890), the composer freely supplementing his brother's text at the dictate of his hectic muse. By mid-June the orchestration was complete and the opera had been submitted to the theatre and to Tchaikovsky's publisher Jurgenson. The inordinate speed of composition was matched by an unusually tight construction and a quality of imagination unmatched in its way in the whole of Russian opera. The composer's many letters to his brother librettist abound with expressions of happy amazement at his own powers of disciplined invention: 'Either I am horribly mistaken, Modya, or the opera is a masterpiece' was the final verdict - one which the international operatic audience has ratified. Earlier he had written 'I am so far firmly convinced that The Queen of Spades is a good, and mainly, a very original piece, speaking not from the musical point of view but in general'." Richard Taruskin in Grove Music Online. Benois is considered a seminal influence on modern ballet set and costume design. "In 1901, [he] was appointed scenic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, the performance space for the Imperial Russian Ballet. He moved to Paris in 1905 and thereafter devoted most of his time to stage design and decor. During these years, his work with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes was groundbreaking. His sets and costumes for the productions of Les Sylphides (1909), Giselle (1910), and Petrushka (1911), are counted among his greatest triumphs. Although Benois worked primarily with the Ballets Russes, he also collaborated with the Moscow Art Theatre and other notable theatres of Europe." Wikipedia. Watercolour, ink, and gouache on wove paper. 312 x 244 mm. Signed by the artist in full and dated 1941 in pencil at lower right. With pencilled notes in Benois's hand including "N 64" in red pencil to upper right corner. Slightly worn, soiled, and creased; remnants of adhesive to corners of verso.

A few plates with faint brownspots, but in general clean and fine. ¶ First edition of this important French circumnavigation. As British, American and Dutch voyages began solidifying their interests in Australia, Hawaii and New Guinea, the French government sought to secure the religious freedoms and rights of French residents in the South Pacific. Voyages such as that of Jules Dumont d'Urville in the 1820s had already collected vast amounts of knowledge of the area, and the French government were hoping to secure its economic opportunities. Having sent out two voyages already, that of the Astrolabe and the Bayonnaise, the French began drawing plans for a third expedition. The original route planned was designed to complement that of Hyacinthe de Bougainville, re-establishing French influence of the Indo-China area. Laplace's prime objective was to re-establish French influence in Indo-China, to 'show the flag in the area. He was also asked to gather information that may be of use to merchants, such as customs, harbour regulations, conditions of entry and market information. On 30 December 1829, Laplace departed Toulon with a crew of 177 aboard La Favorite. (John Dunmore). The beautiful aquatint plates, made by and under the surveillance of Sainson, depicts views of landscapes towns, ports, cities etc. from Manilla, Madras, Australia, Singapore, Macao, Rio de Janeiro, India, Philippines, China, New Zealand etc."This valuable work, full of importent scientific information, was published by order of the French Government. It is accompanied by an "Album Historique", or Atlas of Views etc., seventy-two beautiful plates, proof impressions on India paper, which are perhaps the finest series of plates to any of the pictoresque voyages, etc." (Sabin).BMC (NH) II,604. - Sabin, 38985.

        Pride and Prejudice

London : Richard Bentley A good to very good copy of an early Richard Bentley edition of Pride and Prejudice newly rebound in half leather with marbled boards. The binding, with gilt-lined raised bands to spine, is in fine condition. Page edges marbled. New endpapers. This copy lacks a letterpress title page or series title page; having only a black and white frontispiece and vignette title page dated 1833.; and additional title page dated 1833. The vignette title page was re-used in later editions during the 1830's-50's, retaining its 1833 date. This means that this book was published before 1860, but it is not possible to pin the date down further. The contents are in very good clean condition. The frontispiece and vignette title are a little spotty (as usual) and there is a small stain to the bottom outer corners of both. Text pages have the occasional light spot - most obvious in the bottom margins of pp circa p 244.

THE SAVAGE. By Piomingo, a Headman and Warrior of the Muscogulgee Nation

Knoxville: Republished at the "Scrap Book" Office, 1833. 324pp. Original sheep. Spine chipped and worn, hinges cracked, front board nearly detached, foxing throughout. Withal in decent condition. In a cloth case, leather label. Robinson's essays are written in the guise of the thoughts and debates of a Creek sage named Piomingo. Much of the text consists of arguments between whites and Piomingo over differing philosophies, making this a fascinating view of the Noble Savage and a satire on contemporary mores. First published in Philadelphia in 1810, it was evidently popular enough to go through several editions, of which this frontier-ish printing in Knoxville, at the time of Indian removal, is both exotic and notable.
