The book appeals to many by its thirteen plates (line engravings, tinted by hand) and descriptive text of the dresses worn by the many people of rank and distinction, who formed quadrilles composed of characters from the novels of Sir Walter Scott and La Motte Fouqué. ‘The profusion of jewels and precious stones displayed on this occasion was almost incredible. The grandeur of the whole, the high rank of the co-operating persons, the assemblage of the flower of the highest nobility, of female beauty, and of noble manly forms, the brilliant armour and weapons, the succession of characters of the East and of the West, of history and of romance—all served to heighten the impression of this extraordinary fête, which can never be erased from the memory of those who had the good fortune to be present’" (Martin Hardie, p. 116).

One Hundred Fables. WITH: Second Series

1828 - NORTHCOTE, James. One Hundred Fables, Original and Selected. WITH: Second Series. London: George Lawford; John Murray (Chiswick Press), 1828; 1833. Two volumes. Octavo, late 19th-century three-quarter brown calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $1500.First edition of artist Northcote's compilation of 201 fables, "the greater portion of which are of my own invention," with his headpiece designs for each one and with initial letters and tailpieces by William Harvey, pupil of Thomas Bewick."James Northcote was one of a number of prominent painters of the 18th century". Today Northcote is chiefly admired for his portraits, though his paintings of animals found favor in his lifetime. In his later years he devoted an increasing amount of time to history paintings, including some scenes from Shakespeare's history plays which were exhibited in Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. Northcote is renowned also for his writing, penning the first full biography of Reynolds in 1813, and later a Life of Titian, as well as a book of Fables lavishly illustrated by woodcuts crafted from his own designs". A prolific artist, Northcote was credited with around 2000 works, and by living frugally in his London house for the last 50 years of his life he died a wealthy man". A second series of the Fables was published posthumously, financed by a clause in his will setting aside between £1000 and £1400 explicitly for this" (Devon Perspectives). Thomas Bewick called One Hundred Fables "a brilliant Book." Northcote acknowledges that "although the original invention and designs for the prints at the head of each Fable are my own, yet they have been most excellently drawn on wood, and prepared for the engravers, by Mr. Willliam Harvey, one of the most distinguished artists in his profession; and many of them have been improved by his skill." This set includes both series of Northcote's Fables, the second being printed at the Chiswick Press.         Collection of 15 anti-Andrew Jackson Broadsheets including Seven Large Coffin-Illustrated "Monumental Inscriptions"

Philadelphia: The Democratic Press, 1828. 15 newspaper broadsheets, each measuring approximately 30" x 21" and containing two daily Democratic Press newspapers. Includes broadsheets for 13-14 March, 20-21 March, 25-26 March, 13-14 May, 15-16 May, 3-4 June, 5-6 August, 12-13 August, 21-22 August, 26-27 August, 28-29 August, 30 August-1 September, 9-10 September, 16-17 September, and 14-15 October. Seven of the broadsheets contain large "Monumental Inscriptions" (coffin illustrations) each measuring approximately 4.5" x 9.5". One issue includes an illustration of a slave in chains and the "Administration Ticket" led by John Quincy Adams. These broadsheets were saved by Major John Gardner, whose name appears in the top margin of most. Gardner was a prominent attorney in York, Pennsylvania, active in politics, and a friend of James Buchanan and Thaddeus Stevens. He was a staunch supporter of John Quincy Adams and Richard Rush. Overall the broadsheets are in nice shape. All are complete with some edge-wear, light foxing, and storage folds. The 3-4 June broadsheet has a large stain but is still legible. The Democratic Press, published in Philadelphia, was one of the most influential early 19th century newspapers, and its editor John Binns became convinced, most likely by Colonel Andrew Erwin and other anti-Jackson Tennesseans, that Andrew Jackson needed to be stopped in his quest for the U.S. Presidency. Jackson's enemies provided Binns with factual information about the, perhaps unjustified, execution of Tennessee militiamen on February 21, 1815 at Ft. Charlotte at Mobile Bay while under Jackson's command. Binns, in turn, used this information to smear Jackson in his newspaper and issued supplementary "Coffin Handbills" to do so as well. These broadsheets contain detailed information about the militiamen's trials and executions, the publishing of the infamous Coffin Handbills, Jackson as "a Slave Dealer--a trafficker in human flesh . . . for filthy lucre," and attacks upon Binns and his home by Jackson supporters. Exceptionally scarce. These seven coffin-illustrated broadsheets are not mentioned by Cook or Bassett, and as of 2016, no similar coffin-illustrated broadsheets are in the trade, nor are there any auction results listed at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows that only the American Antiquarian Society and Duke University have these broadsheets in their collections.

Overall in very good condition. viii pp., (4 ll.), 15, (1 blank), 26, 24, 38, 22, 22, 6, 8, 19, (1 blank), 16 pp. [with 6 pp. of tables]. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this valuable compendium of information on Portuguese and Brazilian trade and naval education. Collected here are 19 short works by Dantas Pereira, printed in 12 separately paginated units (each with its own drop-title and imprint) with preliminaries. The first five pieces are orations delivered before the Academia da Companhia dos Guarda-Marinhas, in which Dantas Pereira recounts in detail its history and curriculum (including a four-page list of its scientific apparatus). The next five pieces concern Brazil and Rio de Janeiro. They include a proposal for establishing a naval academy in Rio, with Dantas Pereira's proposed curriculum and plan for preparing the 27 textbooks required; a proposal for the defense of Rio, detailing the preferred strategies, manpower needed, and estimated cost; and a valuable six-page table tallying, by size, the 1,384 ships stopping in Rio during 1816 to load or unload cargo, along with the numbers of ships sailing between Rio and each of 131 world ports and the types of goods carried. The remaining miscellaneous pieces include a eulogy of D. João VI, a proposal for reforming Portuguese agriculture, and a report on activities of the Academia Real das Sciencias for 1827. Despite the similar title, this work is not the same as his @Escritos maritimos (Lisbon, 1816).Dantas Pereira (1772-1836), a native of Alemquer, entered the navy at age 14 and four years later was already Professor of Mathematics at the Academia da Companhia dos Guarda-Marinhas. Around 1807 he went to Brazil, where he served as Chefe de Esquadra, and upon his return to Lisbon in 1819 was named royal councillor. From 1820 to 1823 he was Conselheiro d'Estado, but having accepted important offices under D. Miguel, was forced to flee to France in 1834, where he died. Dantas Pereira was a member of the American Philosophical Society and was secretary of the Academia Real das Sciencias from 1823 to 1833. A prolific writer, he published mathematical texts, poetry, plays, and political commentary on the revolution of 1820, in addition to many short works on naval science.*** Innocêncio V, 31-32: with incorrect collation. Martins de Carvalho, @Dicionário bibliográfico militar português I, 88: collating as our copy. Not in Borba de Moraes (1983), Bosch or Rodrigues, which lists (nº 812) Dantas Pereira's @Escritos maritimos (Lisbon, 1816)-a different work. Not in JCB, @Portuguese and Brazilian Books. NUC: PPAmP. Graesse, Bibl. mag. 112; Ackermann V,1068. A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE EXECUTION OF THE SIX MILITIA MEN [caption title]

[Philadelphia: Office of the Democratic Press, 1828. Broadside, 14 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. Old fold lines. Tanned with light foxing. Very good. An anti-Jackson campaign broadside, issued in the violent and libelous proceedings of the 1828 presidential race. This broadside is decorated with woodcuts of six coffins to illustrate the six Tennessee militia men who were executed for mutiny during the New Orleans campaign. The text gives a pitiful account of their death, including sympathy provoking quotes from the moments before the execution. The "six militia men" story appeared in many forms, dogging Jackson throughout his political career. In fact, the soldiers were ringleaders in a dangerous mutiny, which any other military commander of the time would have suppressed in the same fashion. SHOEMAKER 32473.

Biographische Notizen". Eigenh.

Sketch of Part of the East Coast of China and Western Part of Formosa with the Track of the Schooner Dhaulle in May & June 1827 by Geo. Blaxland

London: Ja. Horsburgh, 1828. A sea chart of the coast of China from "Namoa Island" (Nanao) to Lesan Island (Ping Feng Shan Island), including the port of Amoy and the western coast of Formosa (Taiwan). The intense interest in mapping the Chinese coast was undoubtedly part of the vast amounts of tea bought from China and the British opium trade, which sought to correct that trade deficit in a devastating and cynical way. The Americans were also part of that trade but to a much lesser level. According to Hunt Janin in "The India-China Opium Trade in the 19th Century," the Americans were thought to have sold the Chinese $130,000 worth of opium in 1824 and double that in 1836 but this was insignificant compared to the $7.5 million and $9 million Americans spent in these years, respectively, for Chinese products, mainly tea. He states "... the first ship to bring Turkish opium direct from Smyrna... was American-the Baltimore brig Entan in 1805.... Not long thereafter, fast American ships, usually pilot boat schooners, were being designed for the opium trade. One of these was the Baltimore schooner Dhaulle, which was described as "the most lovely vessel I ever saw" by a British naval officer who watched the ship a building, and which in 1825 was the first ship to beat to windward from the straight of Malacca to China against the northeast monsoon." It seems likely that this is the ship used by Blaxland, although it is unclear how/when ownership might have been transferred to the British Navy, of which George Blaxland was undoubtedly a member. The tracks on the chart show the route of the Dhaulle in and out of the coastal islands of China, as well as a voyage from Amoy to the western coast of Taiwan, to an anchorage then named Ungtubah. An interesting note in the lower left states "If a Ship be in distress and wish to proceed into Amoy Harbour, she ought to run well in, and anchor close to the City, which will induce the Mandarines (sic) to grant speedily the necessary supplies, to get the Ship away as soon as possible." Namoa Island was a famed port for illegal trade in opium. The northern limits of the map are Lesan Islands, or "Le-Shan" as named by Horsburgh, or Ping-fung-shan Islands lat. 27 degrees 22 mins N., lon. 121 degrees 5 minutes E, also called Great Musical Instrument & Little Musical Instrument Island. The top half of much of Taiwan's coast is charted, with an inlet "Samswie" leading to the site where Taipei is now situated. Other sites marked on the western coast are Lookaun and Ungtubah. Keelung City is clearly marked "Kelang-tow". Caballan, Steel Island and Island Soho are marked on the east coast.Sea chart backed on linen and edged in blue silk. Some damage to the lower margin through the imprint and somewhat rumpled with one marking, almost entirely in marginal areas. Insets of "Sketch of Anchorage at Tong-San" and "Anchorage at How-tow-San." 24 1/2" h x 30 1/4" w with margins. OCLC: 556643888 sites a manuscript version of the map held in the British Library; OCLC: 557709046 & OCLC: 557625609 are printed versions, also held only at the British Library. Rare in the trade.
