Martin executed the forty-eight mezzotints [both Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained] himself. The apocalyptic romanticism of his conceptions had many sources: the monumental buildings of London, the engravings of Piranesi, published volumes of eastern views, even incandescent gas, coalpit accidents, and Brunel's new Thames Tunnel. EVELYN, JOHN
London: Henry Colburn, 1827. A New Edition. 222 x 140 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). Five volumes. A New Edition. Especially pleasing contemporary tree calf by John Bumpus (stamp-signed on front free flyleaf), covers with decorative gilt border, raised bands flanked by stippled rules, very attractively rebacked, spine compartments featuring elegant floral centerpiece surrounded by a lozenge shape of small tools, graceful floral cornerpieces, decorative band of oak leaves at foot of each spine, red and green morocco labels, turn-ins with gilt Greek key roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. One illustration in the text, one four-page folding genealogy, and 10 engraved plates. Front pastedowns with shelf label of the Easton Neston Library. Minor wear to extremities (two corners expertly repaired), one raised band slightly nicked, one leaf torn in fore margin (not affecting text), perhaps a dozen leaves lightly foxed or soiled, other trivial imperfections, but a very pretty set, remarkably clean and bright inside and out. This appealing set collects the most personal writings of John Evelyn (1620-1706), who published a number of important books (either original works or translations from the French) on architecture, arboriculture, gardening, and navigation. But the work for which he will always be remembered is the present diary, first published in 1818, covering his entire life and highlighted by accounts of his Continental travels and by brilliant descriptions of his contemporaries. Of special interest is his recounting of the Great London Fire of 1666, which he watched from h … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Clare - The Shepherd's Calendar 1827 First Edition Beautiful Condition. Published for John Taylor & Sold by J.A Hessey in 1827. With original engraved frontispiece (see photo) Bought from completely rebound in new Leather by St Mary's Books, Stamford, England in 2008. Exquisite Leather binding Stored in bubble wrap and damp free safe since 2008. Dispatched with Royal Mail 1st Class. John Clare (13 July 1793 - 20 May 1864) was an English poet. The son of a farm labourer, he became known for his celebrations of the English countryside and sorrows at its disruption.[1] His poetry underwent major re-evaluation in the late 20th century: he is now often seen as a major 19th-century poet.[2] His biographer Jonathan Bate called Clare "the greatest labouring-class poet that England has ever produced. No one has ever written more powerfully of nature, of a rural childhood, and of the alienated and unstable self."[3] John Clare is one of the greatest English Romantic poets, and The Shepherd's Calendar is his masterpiece. It is a classic of English poetry and a fascinating work of social history, recording long-vanished aspects of nineteenth-century rural life. The poem provides a calendar of the country year, in which the various tasks performed by the farm labourer take their place: ploughing in February, lambing in March, and hay-making in June. The countryman's year is also punctuated by celebrations and festivals, such as May Day games, sheep-shearing feasts, Harvest Home, and Christmas. Rooted in popular culture, the poem has many vivid descriptions of the flowers, birds, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

STANDERT, H. C. -
London, [Hullmandel] for Colnaghi and Son, 1827. FIRST EDITION. Oblong 4to, lithographic title and seven hand-coloured lithographic plates; spotting mainly in the margins; original printed wrappers; frayed margins and spine worn; preserved in a custom-made cloth box with gilt-stamped lettering-piece on spine. This rare series of dog studies opens with an iconographically unusual title-page: an Egyptian pyramid balanced on a large mushroom in a field with well-dressed dog, la Napoleon, standing proudly on top. In most plates an English setter features in various circumstances: dancing, a challenge, in matrimony, suckling young, stealing a ham on a bone, or caught in a steel trap; the last showing passing a stone inscribed in dog Latin verse. We have not been able to establish the author of this work with any degree of certainty, the reference to Standert is given in an article from AB Bookman's Weekly from 1991, but we have not been able to corroborate this attribution. Not in Halkett & Laing; OCLC locates copies at Yale, the Library of the American Kennel Club, Texas Christian University and in the College of William and Mary. WHATMAN, J.
ca. 1827-88. Unpaginated. About 300 pages interspersed with a few colour tissue pages. Handmade paper by J. Whatman "Turkey Mill" in 1827 according to a watermark towards the rear. 23 cm. 15 full-page colour and b&w plates. 3 more smaller b&w illustrations. Owner added 30 more colour and b&w illustrations, some detached. 65 p. filled in with verse, mostly written in a tiny, neat script ca. 1828-33. Other writing apparently added later, including a poem "Kind Hearts are More Than Coronets" by Tennyson written on a pink paper, dated June 25th, 1888 and attached to a blank page. Full leather with blank and gilt impressing. Front cover has name of James Scott Couser and Souvenir is written on rear. All edges gilt. Respined with original spine overlaid. Occasional spotting but overall very clean. Commonplace books were a popular pastime among women beginning in the 18th century. This one, manufactured in 1827, is filled with the typical poems, passages, and aphorisms women of the time would have read in printed works. This book's emphasis is on Lord Byron, Lord Palmerston and Vincentia Rogers, a popular Romantic-era Irish poet. These selections, all from popular authors in the periodical press, suggest that the owner was copying from gift books like Forget-me-Not and The Keepsake. Two poems signed by "Jane", dated October 9 and 10, 1833, appear to be original works, probably by the book's owner. This book demonstrates the shift from the commonplace book to the scrapbook, with cards and a poem pasted in. Apparently this book was passed down from one generation to another. Laid in to vol. 1: 20th-century autograph letter from a member of the Edgeworth family to "Prof T Roper", written in defence of Scott's style (see below). Spines chipped and cracked; joints generally firm, the front board of vol. 1 holding just at cords; inner hinges and extremities strengthened in places using tape, with resulting browning; endpapers browned from turn-ins of later blue paper jackets (three of which still present), the boards consequently remarkably clean. Contents crisp and fresh, some occasional faint foxing and soiling of margins. Overall a well-preserved set in its original and unsophisticated state. A set in the original boards with a fine association, presented to Maria Edgeworth from Sir Walter Scott, and then from Edgeworth to her beloved brother-in-law Richard Butler; the first edition of Scott's Miscellaneous Prose Works, comprising all but the second volume (the Life of Swift) of the six-volume set. Passing first from Scott to Edgeworth, the first volume is inscribed on the half-title "From the Author 1829", likely in the publisher's hand. Edgeworth later adds underneath: "1843 March 5th Trim. From Maria Edgeworth to her friend & brother Rev. … [Click Below for Full Description]

1827. For sale is here an early score of THE most famous symphony, if not the most famous composition in history. A rare piece! Actually no other major antique music book seller offers a copy world wide, although it is "Beethoven year". Sothebys sold once a similar copy 8 years ago for 2250€ (~2450 US$). Ludwig van Beethoven: Sinfonie / mit Schluss-Chor über Schillers Ode: "An die Freude" / für großes Orchester, 4 Solo- und 4 Chorstimmen / componiert und / Seiner Majestaet dem König von Preussen / Friedrich Wilhelm III. / in tiefster Ehrfurcht zugeeignet. Mainz und Paris: Schott's Söhne. Plate number 2322. 226 pages. Title page in lithography, music engraved. Published in 1827, half second, half third issue. Measures ca. 27x34x3 cm. The first issue of this full score was released in August 1826 with a subscriber list, the second issue at the same time but without the subscriber list (for those who did not subscribe) and without metronome markings. The metronome markings were added by Beethoven in September 1826 and so found its way into the third issue which was released in 1827. This copy is a most interesting inasmuch strange, "hybrid" copy. The first two movements (page 1-74) are without metronome markings, like the second issue. The last two movements (75-226) have metronome markings, i.e. it is the third issue. I don't know why that is so, and the copy does not look like a combination of two issues. The copy is missing the plate number on both page 172 and 191 (see photos). The score shows the famous incorrect word "frech" instead of "streng" on page 207 (see photo). O … [Click Below for Full Description]
