(Napoli, 1827). in-folio. [Click Below for Full Description]

Historical curiosity: the first publication (after the manuscript) of the Persian text and French translation of the part of "Iskander-Namé", a poem by Nizami, which tells about the alleged campaign of Alexander the Great "against Russia" (!). The book contains the Persian text of this part, with a separate title page and pagination, as well as a detailed commentary and description of the Persian manuscripts received by Russia in 1828 from Persia as indemnity after the defeat in the war. The author of the preface and comments is the academician, professor of the Persian language at St. Petersburg University François Bernard Charmoy. The book contains a printed dedication of the translator to Friedrich de Adelung, famous historian and bibliographer, director of the Oriental Institute, as well as a handwritten inscription of Charmoy to the same Adelung on a fly-leaf. Very rare book.

BENOIT, Charles Louis.
109, [1 blank], [2] pp.Very rare Spanish translation of an essay on a cholera epidemic in Manila, by the French ship's surgeon Charles Louis Benoit. He presented the original French text to the faculty of medicine of the University of Montpellier in 1827. Benoit probably arrived at Manila around 1820, when the epidemic ravaged the city. Benoit gives eight observations, followed by the disease's causes, symptoms, prognoses, and cures. He also mentions that the government sold brandy and quinine (a concoction made from the cinchona bark) as a remedy, which led to excessive abuse which was, according to him, worse than the disease itself. With a manuscript presentation inscription by the author to the Duke of Fezensac, Ambassador of France in Spain. Spine slightly rubbed along the hinges. Internally in very good condition.l Pardo de Tavero 268; R. Peckham, Epidemics in modern Asia, p. 60; WorldCat (3 copies).

[CATECHISM - ARABIC - ROMAN RITE].
[40], “976” [= 980]; [8], “855” [= 847], [1 blank] pp.First unabridged Arabic edition of the catechism translated from the Latin version authorized by the Council of Trent and the most extensive Arabic catechism ever published, comprising 1827 pages plus preliminaries. It follows the Roman Catholic rite and was printed and published by the Propaganda Fide in Rome. It is based on the Latin text authorized by the Council of Trent under Pope Pius V, first published in Latin in 1566. While some small Arabic catechisms of a few dozen pages had been printed as early as 1580, only a few more extensive ones had appeared. The present edition is probably the most extensive Arabic work that the Propaganda Fide ever published. With 19th-century library stamps. With occasional minor and mostly marginal foxing and an occasional quire slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional tiny hole or small marginal chip. Only slightly trimmed. The most ambitious Arabic catechism produced to this date.l Schnurrer 308; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Smitskamp, Philologia orientalis.

Abbildungen Herzoglich-Braunschweigischer Gestüt-Pferde ... 1tes Heft.Braunschweig, 1827-1828. Oblong 1mo (47.5 x 63 cm). First instalment of 6 lithographed plates of horses, plus 1 additional lithographed view, all beautifully coloured by a contemporary hand with highlights in gum arabic, and including two with the captions and artists name in manuscript. All loosely preserved in a proof state of the original publisher's lithographed paper wrappers, including a list of plates. Preserved in a modern portfolio. Beautifully hand-coloured proof states, with occasional additions in ink, of the very rare first instalment of a series of prints of the Duke of Braunschweig's (1804-1873) stud horses, plus an additional view of the Harzburg stud farm not included in the list of plates printed on the back wrapper. The first horse depicted is Mirza, a "Silver grey national Arabian with red spots on his left shoulder, presented to the King of England by the Shah of Persia in 1819. As the Persian envoy assured the King, this was the noblest and most excellent Arabian ever to have stood in his master's stables". The other illustrations show mainly descendants of Mirza, who was transferred to the Ducal stables in 1821.The plate of Mirza would finally appear newly lithographed in reverse with a completely different background, two others would have their background changed and the other three would have only minor changes to the background or none at all. Only plate three contains its final plate number. Even the lithographed wrapper is in a proof state and doesn't include the coat of arms … [Click Below for Full Description]

The strong impression made on him by this fact is that when Morris was properly approached, or perhaps approached by the Continent, an ambitious dream … [Click Below for Full Description]
