[Slavery]. [Alabama]. Harding, Edward.
Mount Vernon, Alabama,: April 20, '27, [i.e.,], 1827. Mount Vernon, Alabama, April 20, '27, [i.e.,] 1827. Separating at spots along old folds; some staining, browning, and light soiling; in good condition, legible.. One page on a lined bifolium, 9.75 x 7.75 inches, approx. 250 words. A prelude to flush times in Alabama and representative bit of evidence of the growth of the internal slave trade, from the soon-to-be commander of the Mount Vernon Arsenal (authorized by Congress in May, 1828). Harding appears to have had roots in Montgomery County, Maryland; this letter includes references to inheritance complications and to Maria's recent misfortunes: "I recd. a letter some days ago from Mr. R. Burdine communicating the disturbing intelligence at the loss of yr. house & effects by fire, and by this days post I enclose here a draft on the Bank of the Metropolis for $100 for yr. benefit. ñ this amount althoí small is all I can well afford ñ I have four children to educate, who are at very expensive schools and their Mother, is now abroad in Pennsylvania superintending their education. . . . I think those who have surreptitiously obtained possession of your Grandfathers property ought to contribute liberally to yr. relief. ñ From that estate you know I have nothing but 5 Negroes, the land left me by my father, and which I shall ever believe my children were swindled out of. I have long since abandoned the idea of ever being able to recover." Harding notes further, "I suppose you are aware my brother H. purchased for me last fall Old Sall and her daughter, who joined me in Dece … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hedge, Levi
Published By Hilliard and Brown, Cambridge, [MA], 1827. Two volumes. First edition. 8vo. 23 cm. xi, (blank), 454; vi, errata, (blank), 379pp. Contemporary three quarter brown calf and marbled boards, rebacked with two gilt stamped leather spine labels on each volume. Printed booksellers ticket of Hilliard & Brown, Booksellers to the University, Cambridge, N.E., on the front pastedown of vol. one, and the bookplate of Preserved Smith in both volumes. Page toning and scattered foxing throughout. Ink presentation inscriptions in each volume, dated 1831, from Levi Hedge, to Preserved Smith, possibly in the recipient's hand. Preserved Smith (1801-53), graduated from Amherst before attending Andover Theological School, 1828-31, serving as a clergyman in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Daniel Walker Howe (The Unitarian Conscience) has demonstrated how Scottish common-sense provided the philosophical underpinnings of Harvard Unitarianism and how this became the establishment philosophy of New England and beyond. As professor of logic and metaphysics at Harvard post 1810, Hedge was a strong advocate of Scottish philosophy: he "moved the college away from [the Logick of] Watts more toward the Scottish logicians." [see: R. Kennedy (ed.), "Aristotelian and Cartesian Logic at Harvard," (Boston: 1995)]. Indeed, Hedge's own Logick was "the definitive presentation" of the Scottish philosophy as understood at Harvard. Benjamin Rand, in his article "Philosophical Instruction in Harvard University from 1636 to 1906," [Harvard Graduates Magazine: 1928], adds that "the introduction of the Scot … [Click Below for Full Description]

[TROMMSDORFF, Johann Bartholomäus?].
A complete manuscript course in "general and pharmacological experimental chemistry", probably intended for pharmacologists, the main text comprising 329 pages with a 68-page additional work or appendix concerning chemical aspects of the main components of plants and the most important products that can be extracted from them, followed by a 41-page series of questions and answers. No author's name appears in the manuscript. The titles might seem to suggest a connection with Johann Bartholomäus Trommsdorff, Leerboek der artsenymengkundige proefondervindelijke scheikunde, (second edition Amsterdam, 1827-1831), first published in German, and in Dutch translation in 1815; and Thomas Graham, Scheikunde der bewerktuigde ligchamen (Amsterdam, 1844), a Dutch translation of a German adaptation; but we have found no direct connection with the texts of either book. With occasional very slight browning and a couple small stains, but still in very good condition. The head of the backstrip has been repaired, the hinges are worn and the marbled paper shows a few scuff marks, but the binding is still good.

Pierre Joseph Redoute
Paris, 1827. This striking originally hand-colored stipple engraving is from Pierre Joseph Redoute's "Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs". This first edition work was published in Paris in 1827 by Panckoucke. --- Redoute's name is synonymous with beauty and in the world of botanical art he is known as the best. "Choix" is often considered some of Redoute's most desirable work, a culmination of his impressive skill and talent. He aimed to make the composition more appealing to the upper classes which created highly decorative engravings. --- Redoute's fame is due in large part to his diligent effort to perfect the use of stipple engraving. This labor intensive, and therefore expensive, technique creates subtle yet stunning variations of color making it superior to the engraving alone. Each plate was created using the 'a la poupee' process in which the color was applied before the printing. Hand-finished coloring was painstakingly applied after printing. --- Redoute was renowned for his artistic ability and tutored such people as Queen Marie-Antoinette, Empress Josephine, Marie-Louise, and Queen Marie-Amelie. Redoute influenced a breadth of artists that followed him including Turpin, Poiteau, Bessa, and Prevost. Redoute is widely considered the finest botanical illustrator of the early 19th century, if not throughout history. --- The process of stipple engraving and color printing give the Redoute engravings their luminous quality. Stippling is an etching process that employs dots instead of lines to form the image, which is then color printed by applying colored inks directly to t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hedge, Levi
Cambridge, [MA]: Published By Hilliard and Brown, 1827.

Slavery]. [Alabama]. Harding, Edward.
April 20, '27, [i.e.,], Mount Vernon, Alabama, 1827. R. Burdine communicating the disturbing intelligence at the loss of yr. house & effects by fire, and by this days post I enclose here a draft on the Bank of the Metropolis for $100 for yr. benefit. – this amount altho’ small is all I can well afford – I have four children to educate, who are at very expensive schools and their Mother, is now abroad in Pennsylvania superintending their education. . . . I think those who have surreptitiously obtained possession of your Grandfathers property ought to contribute liberally to yr. relief. – From that estate you know I have nothing but 5 Negroes, the land left me by my father, and which I shall ever believe my children were swindled out of. I have long since abandoned the idea of ever being able to recover." Harding notes further, "I suppose you are aware my brother H. purchased for me last fall Old Sall and her daughter, who joined me in December last. They with the rest of the Negroes, are around me & doing well." Maria Queen appears in public records petitioning for compensation in May, 1862 for the em … [Click Below for Full Description]
