[TROMMSDORFF, Johann Bartholomäus?].
A complete manuscript course in "general and pharmacological experimental chemistry", probably intended for pharmacologists, the main text comprising 329 pages with a 68-page additional work or appendix concerning chemical aspects of the main components of plants and the most important products that can be extracted from them, followed by a 41-page series of questions and answers. No author's name appears in the manuscript. The titles might seem to suggest a connection with Johann Bartholomäus Trommsdorff, Leerboek der artsenymengkundige proefondervindelijke scheikunde, (second edition Amsterdam, 1827-1831), first published in German, and in Dutch translation in 1815; and Thomas Graham, Scheikunde der bewerktuigde ligchamen (Amsterdam, 1844), a Dutch translation of a German adaptation; but we have found no direct connection with the texts of either book. With occasional very slight browning and a couple small stains, but still in very good condition. The head of the backstrip has been repaired, the hinges are worn and the marbled paper shows a few scuff marks, but the binding is still good.

Manchester, England: James Phenix, 1827. Unbound. Very good. This broadside, which measures 7.5" x 14", advertises an early performance by Ira Aldridge starring as Othello at the Theatre-Royal in Manchester England on February 17, 1827. Minor toning, mostly along the margins. The broadside twice promotes Aldridge as the "African Roscius" and goes on to boast: "The Singular Novelty of An Actor of Colour, Personating the routine of Moorish and African Characters, has rendered the performance of the African Roscius, highly attractive in the Theatres in which he has appeared; - and the nightly plaudits with which he has uniformly been honoured by Crowded Audiences, evince the estimation in which his talents are held by the Public.". Although Aldridge billed himself on the European stage as a Senegalese prince, he came from a poor, but free, African-American family in New York. The son of a straw-seller who was also a lay preacher, Ira attended the African Free School in Manhattan where, through the study of classics, he developed a deep appreciation for the theater. As a youngster, he worked backstage at the Chatham Theatre and, while in his teens, began acting at the city's African Grove Theatre, the first U. S. playhouse catering to and managed by African-Americans. There, Aldridge apprenticed under James Hewlett, the first African-American Shakespearean actor. Although he found steady work as an actor, Aldridge came to feel that the United States was not a hospitable place for theatrical performers, especially black theatrical performers. So, in 1824, he le … [Click Below for Full Description]

Byrne, Charles G. and George Linley
London: Published by Goulding and D'almaine: And may be had of all music sellers in Edinburgh, Glasgow, & Dublin, 23rd. April 1827.. Folio, pp. [1-6] 1-59 [60: blank], vignette title leaf engraved by W. H. Lizars, cover vignette and music engraved by W. & A. K. Johnston, Edinburgh, original decorated green boards printed in black, edges untrimmed. First edition. The first number of a projected series with "No. 1" and "Price 12s" at head of title. Collects eleven songs. George Linley (1797-1865) was an English poet, playwright and musical composer. He was born and educated in Leeds. "After a period of military service, he lived at first in Edinburgh but eventually settled in London, where he wrote and composed several hundred songs between 1830 and 1865. Among his most fashionable and popular ballads, composed between 1830 and 1847, were 'Thou Art Gone from My Gaze,' 'Song of the Roving Gypsy,' 'Constance;' and later, between 1852 and 1862, with a stronger vein of melody, 'Minnie,' 'Old Friends at Home,' and the Robert Burns poem, 'The Jolly Beggars.' Linley also wrote the English words to the song 'God Bless the Prince of Wales' (originally performed in Welsh), which was completed and performed in 1863. Linley died, after a lingering illness, at Kensington, London, on 10 September 1865, and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery 5 days later. One obituary stated, 'The absence of the happy face and wit of George Linley from many a gathering of musical and literary men in London will be long felt as a loss not easily supplied.'" - Wikipedia. Manuscript; Shaw, Lemuel; Everett, Edward
1827. Lemuel Shaw Asks Edward Everett to Help a Friend Seeking a Naval Commission [Manuscript]. Shaw, Lemuel [1781-1861]. Everett, Edward [1795-1865]. [Autograph Letter, Signed, to Edward Everett with Everett's Appended, And Signed, Letter of Transmittal, Boston, October 4, 1827 and October 12, 1827]. Single leaf folded to form 9-3/4" x 7-3/4" bifolium with integral address leaf, franked in red on verso of second leaf. Some toning, old lines with short tears at ends, some remnants of paper from old mounting on back with no loss of legibility. * This item from future Chief Justice of Massachusetts Lemuel Shaw to then Congressman and future Gettysburg orator Edward Everett contains two letters. It contains Shaw's original letter, requesting help for a friend who was seeking a commission as a purser in the Navy, and Everett's appended letter on behalf of Shaw's friend to the Secretary of the Navy, Samuel L. Southward. In the 19th century, Edward Everett was celebrated as a preacher and public orator. He is most famous for delivering a two-hour oration in 1863 at the dedication of the Gettysburg military cemetery. Everett's speech was subsequently eclipsed by President Abraham Lincoln's immortal, two-minute Gettysburg Address. At the time this letter was written Shaw had already served in both houses of the Massachusetts Legislature and had drafted the first charter of the City of Boston. In 1830, he became the Chief Justice of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He served on that court for 30 years and participated in such notable cases as the "Parkman-Webster" murder case and … [Click Below for Full Description]

1827. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr James Fenimore Cooper, The Red Rover [Le Corsaire Rouge], a Tale, by the author of the Pilot, etc., etc. The Red Rover & The Prairie. Son premier roman marin fut The Pilot. [Click Below for Full Description]

Randers, Elmenhoff, 1827-29. Indbundet i 12 ensartede lidt senere hldrbd. Rig rygforgyldning, forgyldte skindtitler. Just ask! 1827 1st ed Imprisonment INQUISITION Juan Van Halen TORTURE Voyages Caucasus A Spaniard of Dutch heritage, Juan Van Halen (1788-1864) entered the Spanish navy in 1803, sailing to Cuba and Mexico. In 1808 he became involved in the Peninsula Campaign, first fighting for the Spanish, then briefly joining the French after being taken prisoner, and finally returning to the Spanish side, boldly fooling the French into surrendering three forts by dressing as a French officer and presenting forged documents announcing a treaty. He received a promotion for this coup, but in 1817 fell victim to the Inquisition and was (according to his own account) imprisoned and tortured. Escaping to Russia, he spent 18 months as a colonel in the Caucasus Dragoon Regiment under General Yermalov in Tblisi, Georgia. Despite some likely fictional elements, this1827 account of his adventures is generally regarded as based in truth. British traveler and scholar John Frederick Baddeley describes it as "one of the best of the early books of travel and adventure in the Caucasus" (Russian Conquest).
