Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, November 1826. 4to. Contemp. full marbled sheep. Richly gilt spine. Title-abel with gilt lettering. A small nick in leather at top of spine. Minor scratches to covers. Marbled edges. Free end-paper gone. 226, (2, Errata-leaf) pp. and 2 folded engraved plates. Title-page with 2 closed tears without loss, repaired with contemporary paper pasted on verso. A small nick to upper margin on the second leaf. Internally clean and wide-margined.. Scarce first edition in the very scarce first SEPARATE EDITION of "one of the most celebrated memoirs in the history of natural philosophy" (Whittaker), unifying electricity and magnetism. The papers published here, which Ampère had read to the Academy during the years 1820-25 appeared prior to the publication in the Academy. There are some variations in the extant copies of this separate edition as it should be issued before the volume in the Academy's Memoires. The pages were printed for the Academy-volume for the year 1823 (but not published before 1827) so during the printing process for the separate issue the year 1823 was removed from the lower margin of nearly all quires, - one signature (sign. 21) retained 1823 and some also on quire 12. All pages were repaginated, only in some copies pp. 85-92 remained misnumbered as pp. 257-264. A fresh title-page was printed by Méquignon-Marvis (with another title as in the Mémoire-volume) and the last 12 pages were reset and extended to 18. The offered copy has 1823 on quire 21 and the right numbering of pp. 85-92, probably corrected during the printing process. - The work was published in the Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences...", volume VI late in 1827."The experimental investigation by which Ampère established the laws of the mechanical action between electric currents is one of the most brilliant achievements in science. The whole, theory and experiment, seems as if it had leaped, full grown and full armed, from the brain of the 'Newton of electricity.' It is perfect in form, and unassailable in accuracy, and it is summed up in a formula from which all the phenomena may be deduced, and which must always remain the cardinal formula of electro-dynamics."       Freiburg, 19. VI. 1826. - 1 S. 4to.

A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF THE LATE CAPT. MICHAEL CRESAP

Cumberland, Md.: Printed for the Author, by J.M. Buchanan, 1826.. 123,[1]pp. 12mo. Contemporary three-quarter roan and marbled boards, spine gilt. Boards lightly rubbed and shelfworn. Early ownership signature on front free endpaper. Light tanning, scattered foxing, old light dampstain in lower third of final five leaves of text. About very good. In a burgundy half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt, and folding cloth chemise. First edition of this biography of Captain Cresap, defending him against charges that he slaughtered Indians before the beginning of the Revolutionary War. In particular, Cresap became infamous in the case of the Indian, Logan, and the murder of his defenseless family in 1774. "This biography of Cresap was written to refute Jefferson's account in NOTES ON VIRGINIA....The immediate occasion for this now rare book, written by the revolutionary officer, later clergyman, who had married Cresap's widow, was the reopening of old sores by [Joseph] Doddridge in his then recently published NOTES [ON THE SETTLEMENT AND INDIAN WARS, OF THE WESTERN PARTS OF VIRGINIA & PENNSYLVANIA, FROM THE YEAR 1763 UNTIL THE YEAR 1783 INCLUSIVE] of 1824. The defense is complete and the biography is of absorbing interest" - Streeter. HOWES J32, "b." SABIN 35488. STREETER SALE 1335. FIELD 769. THOMSON 640. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 24967. -- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Olivier

Paris: Urbain Canel (1826). 226pp - Paris: Urbain Canel (1826). 226pp. The controversial anonymous novel, originally attributed to the Duchesse Claire de Duras, created a scandal when published. The story revolves around a romantic intrigue that was in fact based upon the homosexual Marquis de Custine's broken engagement to Duras' daughter in 1820. Although never explicit, the novel was clearly designed to provoke and it actually prevented Duras from publishing her own similarly titled novel during her lifetime (it only appeaed in 1971). At one point in the novel, the narrator remarks, "Confidence was full and reciprocal between the two friends. except on one point, the subject of their loves.Olivier, in this matter, was reserved and excessively mysterious."       London: John Murray, 1826. a few spots, one leaf stained and another with a marginal defect.. Quarto, with 14 charts and aquatint plates, some folding; overall a good copy in modern calf with label from an earlier binding. First edition of a famous voyage account, and an important and extensive illustrated description of Hawaii in the mid-1820s.Kamehameha II of Hawaii and his Queen Kamamalu were on a visit to London in 1824 when they both died of measles, against which they had no immunity. This voyage - 'one of the most gracious acts that one country has ever extended to another' (Buck) - was commissioned by the British government specifically to return their bodies to the Hawaiian Islands, with the cousin of the poet Byron in command. The book contains a history of their visit to London, a résumé of the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands and visits by British explorers, as well as the main narrative, compiled by Maria Graham from journals kept by the naturalist Bloxam as well as from official papers. The stay in Hawaii contains an interesting account of travels to Hilo, and the volcano, Kealakekua, Lahaina and Honolulu. The fine aquatint views by Robert Dampier include a large view of Kilauea crater, two of Honolulu, four of Hilo, and one each of the City of Refuge near Kealakekua, and Lahaina on Maui.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. („Ludw. Achim Arnim").

Berlin, 3. März 1826. - 3¼ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief).

Peele et Al. v. the Merchants' Insurance Company concerned claims on a merchant ship that was wrecked off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and abandoned. Though damaged, the cargo was ultimately saved. At issue was the effect of abandonment on the insurance claim of the owners. In the U.S. Circuit Court, Justice Story held that the owners had the right to abandon their ship under the circumstances of the wreck and were entitled to recover their claim. The case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, but no decision can be found. The second item was probably intended for busy New England lawyers who dealt with maritime contracts. It would have been a handy reference and a useful source for erudite references. The core of this curious volume is an anthology of writings by the leading seventeenth-century English writers on admiralty. An editor isn't listed and the extracts are presented without commentary, but the editor used sources for each work which are mentioned and the extracts are collated against them in side-notes. A fine copy. An excellent set of numbers I - VII (Wednesday 13 December 1826 - Wednesday 7 March 1827). Apparently all published and very rare. BUCOP locates only one set (at the BL). OCLC & COPAC add no others. Not in the Union List. Two relatively early Glasgow university journals with a pot-pourri of articles both serious and amusing, together with a smattering of poetry, intended, according to the editors, to be 'a permanent record of our collegiate pursuits, - a depository of those pains and pleasures whose influence will extend through the remainder of our lives'. The authors of the Academic> declared that theirs was 'a joint production of a few young men, associated in the pursuit of literature, at a northern university'. Those of the Collegian> announced that that journal had 'been conducted on a similar plan with that of the Academic> ... and is partly intended as a continuation of that volume'. The circulation of the work was 'confined to a few individuals', resulting no doubt in its present rarity. Among the more serious articles are contributions on 'the philosophy of the science of mathematics', 'the inadequacy of utility as a standard of morals', atheism, remarks on the metaphysical and moral sciences, society and government, an anti-slavery meeting, the difference between wit and humour, degree and examination regulations, a long obituary of George Jardine, a defence of pugilism, etc. etc.

      A. Sautelet et Cie, Paris 1826 - First edition, the rare first issue with the E in Bourse on the title page at 90 degree angle. 2 volumes. Pp. A handsome copy of the first edition of a French classic. Its combination of wit, philosophy, science, anecdotes, culinary chemistry, aphorism, physiology &c was a winning formula and led to demands for its continual reprinting and eventual translation. The first edition was printed in only 500 copies, "edition originale rare et trà s recherchà e" (Oberlà ), and this first issue is extremely scarce. Oberle 1544, Vicaire 116-7, Cagle 98.
