Voyage of HMS Blonde to the Sandwich Islands, in the years 1824-1825. Captain the Right Hon. Lord Byron, Commander.

London: John Murray, 1826. Quarto, with 14 charts and aquatint plates, some folding; overall a good copy in modern calf with label from an earlier binding. First edition of a famous voyage account, and an important and extensive illustrated description of Hawaii in the mid-1820s.Kamehameha II of Hawaii and his Queen Kamamalu were on a visit to London in 1824 when they both died of measles, against which they had no immunity. This voyage - 'one of the most gracious acts that one country has ever extended to another' (Buck) - was commissioned by the British government specifically to return their bodies to the Hawaiian Islands, with the cousin of the poet Byron in command. The book contains a history of their visit to London, a résumé of the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands and visits by British explorers, as well as the main narrative, compiled by Maria Graham from journals kept by the naturalist Bloxam as well as from official papers. The stay in Hawaii contains an interesting account of travels to Hilo, and the volcano, Kealakekua, Lahaina and Honolulu. The fine aquatint views by Robert Dampier include a large view of Kilauea crater, two of Honolulu, four of Hilo, and one each of the City of Refuge near Kealakekua, and Lahaina on Maui. a few spots, one leaf stained and another with a marginal defect.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. („Ludw. Achim Arnim").

Berlin, 3. März 1826. - 3¼ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief).

With Extracts from Various Learned Treatises Upon This Subject. And an Abstract of the Records of the Vice Admiralty Court in Massachusetts Prior to the Revolution. Boston: Howe & Norton, 1826. 132 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary plain wrappers. Some edgewear and a few minor stains. Toning, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. * Only editions. Peele et Al. v. the Merchants' Insurance Company concerned claims on a merchant ship that was wrecked off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and abandoned. Though damaged, the cargo was ultimately saved. At issue was the effect of abandonment on the insurance claim of the owners. In the U.S. Circuit Court, Justice Story held that the owners had the right to abandon their ship under the circumstances of the wreck and were entitled to recover their claim. The case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, but no decision can be found. The second item was probably intended for busy New England lawyers who dealt with maritime contracts. It would have been a handy reference and a useful source for erudite references. The core of this curious volume is an anthology of writings by the leading seventeenth-century English writers on admiralty. An editor isn't listed and the extracts are presented without commentary, but the editor used sources for each work which are mentioned and the extracts are collated against them in side-notes. These items have separate bibliographic records in the standard r [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A fine copy. An excellent set of numbers I - VII (Wednesday 13 December 1826 - Wednesday 7 March 1827). Apparently all published and very rare. BUCOP locates only one set (at the BL). OCLC & COPAC add no others. Not in the Union List. Two relatively early Glasgow university journals with a pot-pourri of articles both serious and amusing, together with a smattering of poetry, intended, according to the editors, to be 'a permanent record of our collegiate pursuits, - a depository of those pains and pleasures whose influence will extend through the remainder of our lives'. The authors of the Academic> declared that theirs was 'a joint production of a few young men, associated in the pursuit of literature, at a northern university'. Those of the Collegian> announced that that journal had 'been conducted on a similar plan with that of the Academic> ... and is partly intended as a continuation of that volume'. The circulation of the work was 'confined to a few individuals', resulting no doubt in its present rarity. Among the more serious articles are contributions on 'the philosophy of the science of mathematics', 'the inadequacy of utility as a standard of morals', atheism, remarks on the metaphysical and moral sciences, society and government, an anti-slavery meeting, the difference between wit and humour, degree and examination regulations, a long obituary of George Jardine, a defence of pugilism, etc. etc.

Stamperia Francese 1826 In 16, pp. 118 + (2). ITA

Between 1826 and 1830 he satisfied the insatiable demand for his designs with almost 500 lithographs, nearly all of which were drawn with a pen and colored by hand. For each design he himself colored a master print and carefully supervised its subsequent preparation… Some of the salient titles in his human comedy may be mentioned. There are potpourris like Recréations du coeur et de l?'esprit, Paris vivant, and Rencontres Parisiennes. Macédoine pittoresque. There are more closely focussed surveys like Les grisettes, Moeurs administratives, Galerie théâtrale, Boutiques de Paris, and Six Quartiers de Paris. There are suites like Jadis et aujourd?'hui and Les contrastes, which take their departure from comparisons in time or of manners…Monnier was a satirist with a difference. His attitude towards his subjects hardly varies. His aim was to set down what he saw with elegance and precision, but with no overt interpretation or judgment?" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, p. 199).We have only ever seen one other example (of the 1827 edition) - thirteen years ago (with thirty-two of forty-two plates) We have located just one copy in institutions worldwide (of the 1827 edition with 40 plates) in the The Morgan Library and Museum.

Stamperia Francese, Napoli 1826 - In 16, pp. 118 + (2). ITA

Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa in the Years 1822, 1823, and 1824

London: John Murray,, 1826-9. [together with] Journal of a Second Expedition into the Interior of Africa. From the Bight of Benin to Soccatoo. 2 volumes, quarto (280 x 214 mm). Contemporary full sprinkled calf, skilfully restored along board edges and rebacked to style, raised bands to spines, titles gilt to red and green morocco labels, decorative pattern to compartments gilt, double frames and decorative helix rolls to boards gilt, rolls to board edges gilt, to turn-ins in blind. Engraved portrait frontispieces, 42 plates, and 2 engraved folding maps. Partially unopened. Boards slightly scuffed, minor wear to board edges, occasional light spotting to margins. An excellent set. First editions. Accounts of two expeditions which sought to trace the Niger to its source. While neither expedition succeeded, they nonetheless opened up much of north central Africa to European knowledge. The first expedition, lead by Dixon Denham (1786-1828) with Hugh Clapperton (1788?-1827) as his second-in-command, was the first European group to travel across the Sahara from Tripoli to Bornu and survive. However, it was plagued by interpersonal conflict, as Denham "treated his colleagues with a scarcely veiled contempt that from the start soured relations between them" (ODNB). Returning to London in 1825, Denham remained to write his account which "so belittled Clapperton's contribution that it almost reads as though Denham was travelling alone" (Howgego D18). Meanwhile, Clapperton returned to Africa to continue tracing the Niger; he would die of dysentery at Sokoto two years later still without having reached the mouth of the river. This task would, however, be completed by his travelling companion Richard Lander (1804-1834). Clapperton and Lander's journals are collected in the second volume. A large and handsome set.

Dessau, 22. I. 1826. - 3 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo. Audot,: Paris:, 1826. Paris: Audot, 1826. First edition. "This is a seminal book for our understanding of life in rural domains because it emulates the encyclopedia, proceeding from empirical observations and aiming at a complete description... (it describes) in great detail all sorts of possible pleasures to be found in a rural estate and the necessary steps that any reader would have to go through in order to achieve them." (Conan, Michel. TRADITION AND INNOVATION IN FRENCH GARDEN ART. p. 172.) Published in four volumes, it covers a multitude of creative and practical activities suitable for country life with an emphasis on making all the apparatus oneself. It includes studies in perspective and optics, bird-keeping and bee-keeping, "recreational"gardening, including a discussion of the parterre, and a botanical story entitled MISNAR ET ZELMAIS. There is a sizeable section devoted to the language of flowers with lists of attributes, a vocabulary, and an allegory of colours along with instructions for games of skill and agility, festivals, and games for private gardens. Astronomy, sun-dialling, preparation of cabinets d' Histoire Naturelle and herbiers (including how to make paper for an herbier), fireworks and trelliswork are all covered. The instructions are very detailed and usually point to an illustration or figure in one of the plates. Michel Conan notes that all of this is directed at building "independence from society" in the country, but the activities are also designed to strengthen the bonds of family and friends. Paulin Desormeaux, an authority on trellis work who was also commissioned by Audot for several other similar works, compiled the text with collaboration from other Audot authors such as Pierre Boitard and Aglaé Adanson.Four volumes, 12mo (17 x 9.9 cm); viii + 331 (1) pp. ; (iv) + 360 pp.; (iv) + 366pp.; (iv) + 333 + (1) + 8 pp. supplement. + 38 engraved plates of which two are folding (the title page mistakenly refers to 40 plates). Contemporary red paper covered boards with gilt ruled and lettered spines; some light bumping and scuffing to extremities; scattered light foxing and browning;vol. 3 shows an old faded dampstain in upper margin corner and small portion of text for about the last 8 pages; a tear across text to pp. vii and viii in volume one has been neatly repaired without loss of text.

        Sixth Symphony (Pastoral Symphony)

1826. BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van.Sixieme symphonie Pastorale en fa majeur… Oeuvre 68.Leipzig: Breitkopf & Hartel, [1826].First edition of the full score of Beethoven?'s Sixth (Pastoral) Symphony—?"What a cheerful, genial, beneficent view over the whole realm of Nature and man!?" (Grove, Beethoven, 227).The announcement of Beethoven's concert of December 22, 1808 appearing a few days earlier in the Wiener Zeitung referred to "A Symphony, entitled: 'A Recollection of Country Life." The word "pastoral" is first found in a violin part (now in the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Vienna) used at the first performance. Beethoven feared that the "program" aspect of the symphony would overwhelm the music, and he warned that the symphony was "More an expression of feeling than a painting." Despite the composer's admonition, the "Pastoral" is program music at its best, a vivid expression of feelings inspired by the natural world—especially the realistic birdcalls in the coda of the second movement, and the small-town brass band and "muttering of thunder" in the third movement (Sherman & Biancoli, 581). "To the end of his life Beethoven was a lover of the country. Thus he earns a good mark which history does not award to Bach, Handel, Mozart, Berlioz, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner and Brahms. It was a love that went deeper than the townsman's delight in pretty places and fresh air… In the presence of field, trees and hills Beethoven felt himself nearer to the spirit of divine things than he did among men and buildings; and his art responded in like degree, for it was during his lonely rambles that his inspiration came most fluently and his compositions most readily assumed their nature and course" (Grove I:556).Kinsky-Halm, 163. Fuld, 560. Hoboken, 304. Hirsch IV:311.Occasional foxing; title page remargined. Corners slightly bumped, a bit of soiling to vellum. An attractive copy.
