The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757.

Philadelphia: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1826. First edition, first issue with page 89 misnumbered 93, Chapter XVI numbered XIV in Volume I (page 243), and page vii correctly numbered. Octavo, 2 volumes, bound in contemporary half calf over boards. In very good condition with some rubbing to the boards, the text is remarkably clean. These volumes were purchased from a California family who had owned them since the 1870s. The Last of the Mohicans is the most famous of the Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout Natty Bumppo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and romantic in the lives and characters of the white men who made the American wilderness their home... The novel glorified for many generations of readers, in England, France, Russia, and at home, some aspects of American life that were unique to our cultural history" (Grolier American 100 34). "[Cooper's] sympathy is large, and his humor is as genuine--and as perfectly unaffected--as his art" (Joseph Conrad).

Physiologie du gout, ou meditations de gastronomie transcendante. 2 vols.

      A. Sautelet, Paris 1826 - "Tell Me What You Eat and I Will Tell You What You Are" 1.Brillat-Savarin, Jean Anthelme (1755-1826). Physiologie du gout, ou méditations de gastronomie transcendante . . .2 vols., 8vo. [2], xiv, 390; 442pp. Paris: A. Sautelet et Cie., 1826. 206 x 126 mm. Quarter calf gilt, marbled boards ca. 1826, front hinge of Vol. I cracked, light edgewear. Occasional foxing but very good. First Edition. "La physiologie du gout (1826) by Brillat-Savarin has been in print ever since its first publication, and is much the most famous of all gastronomic essays. Brillat-Savarin was a lawyer from Belley in the French Alps, and a bachelor who spent most of his life in Paris eating at the best tables. His tastes were shaped by both rural and metropolitan traditions of eating, and further diversified by a brief period as an émigré which took him as far as the USA and shooting wild turkeys in New England. His book was many years in preparation and published in the last few weeks of his life. It opens with a series of aphorisms, the most quoted of which is ‘Tell me what you eat: I will tell you what you are.’ These are followed by the 148 ‘Gastronomic Meditations’ in 30 chapters which form the bulk of the book. Brillat-Savarin sets out the physiological knowledge of the day, on the sense of taste, appetite, and the nutritional qualities of foodstuffs, but in a light and witty way enlivened by many anecdotes" (Mennell, All Manners of Food: Eating and Taste in England and France from the Middle Ages to the Present, p. 268).         Geographische-statistisch und historische Charte von Missouri

Weimar: im Verlage des geographischen Instituts, 1826. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition. A highly important early map of the Great Plains This very attractive map is a fascinating historical document depicting the early development of the state of Missouri. The state was admitted into the Union as part of the Missouri Compromise in 1821, having been carved out the territory of the same name that was part of the Louisiana Purchase. Finely coloured in outline are fourteen named counties. Most of the settlement still hugs the Mississippi River, and is centered on the bustling river port of St. Louis, which was founded by French fur traders in 1763. The western counties maintain a large size, suggesting their sparse population and undeveloped nature. The map features the 'Osage Line' that runs vertically south from Fort Osage on the Missouri River, marking the border between lands ceded to the U.S. government by the Osage nation in 1808. Featured in the center of the state on the Missouri River is the newly-founded state capitol, Jefferson City. Notably, the map depicts the state before the 1835 'Platte Purchase', that extended its northern boundary west to the Missouri River. The map is surrounded by statistics and text that describes the physical, political and demographic profile of the state during an especially critical period in its development. This map is advanced from the one that appeared in Carey & Lea's American Atlas, printed in Philadelphia in 1822.

SO NO AKEBONO: THE DAWN & DAYBREAK OF LOVEMAKING. [The Erotic Tale of Oseru & He

[Japan 1826, n.p.]. Blue stitched wrs., very good, 6 vol.set. Chuban or 12 x 18 cm., very good, 111 double folded leaves,. 23 b.w. illustrations many are hand tinted around the genit-. alia, wood block printed on hand-made paper, minor old worm. A FASCINATING NOVEL OF LICENTIOUSNESS IN OLD JAPAN damage but properly mended. This set was likely illustrated by a very skilled Utagawa Kuniyoshi school artist. Since it was common for artists not to sign erotic book, one can not know the exact artist name. The lavishly illustrated text is a good example of a skillful hand and illustrator. While there is no colophon, which is also usual for erotic books, a cyclical date is found in volume one for 1826. The story seems to be about Tokuseru, a girl who has various affairs with several lovers. In one illustration, she is shown asle- ep in a dream-state, with an image floating above her. In this, she is with her favorite lover Tokushichi who is making love to her. She is shown sleeping with her hand on an erotic book, with Chirishi [paper to wipe the aftermath of love-making] while her cat looks on. She has been stimu- lated by looking at the erotic book and then her lover appe- ared in her dream. Another shows her being raped in the river by two boat boatman. Others show her with her favorite Tokushichi, and other lovers. In one very dark midnight scene, she is found making love to her lover, while an unin- vited guest stumbles into their room by error. Contained in a period paper covered slipcase. Scans can be sent by email. Valentin, since 1814 a liberal exile from King Ferdinand VII's reactionary Spain, was in Rome in 1821 when John Keats was seeking convalescence there. He, being interested in England and English writers, sought and gained an introduction to Keats, met and spoke with him occasionally, and is said (by the novelist Gerald Griffin) to have conversed with Keats just three days before his death. It was thus, with a letter of introduction from Keats's friend the artist Joseph Severn, who was with Keats at the end, that Valentin proceeded to England and met with Keats's lover Fanny Brawne and his youngest sister Fanny Keats, in the Summer of 1821. Fanny Keats and Valentin married in 1826, the year of Sandoval's publication. Charles Cowden Clarke, the schoolteacher of the Keats brothers and a significant literary patron of the poet, remembered "Mr Llanos" as "a man of liberal principles, very attractive bearing, and of more than ordinary accomplishments." He wrote three novels, Don Esteban (1825), Sandoval (1826) and The Spanish Exile (written 1828, never published). Valentin returned with Fanny to Spain in 1833 (on King Ferdinand VII's death), never to return to England. In 1835 he became secretary to Spain's leading minister Juan Alvarez Mendizabal, also a former London exile, rising to Spanish consul of Gibraltar. In 1861 he retired, and from 1861-4 Valentin and Fanny lived in Italy and reunited for a time with Severn, before returning to Spain. George Keats, John's favourite brother and the recipient of many of his most important letters and poems, had emigrated to America in 1818, setting up a sawmill venture in Louisville, Kentucky. His first years of business were unsuccessful (he is believed to have been swindled by the naturalist John James Audubon), and he visited England again briefly in January 1820 to collect his share of his deceased brother Tom's estate before returning to America, where he remained. As such he never met his brother-in-law Valentin, but was pleased to have as "a friend and brother" a man of letters, and enjoyed both his published novels. His copy of Sandoval (this copy) is recorded by Crutcher in his list of the books in George Keats's library. It is presumed that Valentin and Fanny sent his copy to him in America, though it is possible that the book was entrusted to George Keats's wife Georgiana when she visited England in May 1828 - the inscription "George Keats, the gift of the author", appearing on the title page of all three volumes, is the author's.

London: R. Ackermann, 1826. First edition in spanish. Two volumes, large octavos, pp [xxxii], 432; iv, 1 - [450], [2 ads]. Vol. 1 contains 1 large folding map of "Anahuac o Imperio Megicano", and 16 full-page hors-de-texte plates: vol. 2.has large folding map of "Lagos de Megico", and one plate. Vol. i also has several lengthy appendices on the Mexican calendar. Volume one deals with the Aztecs prior to Cortes, vol. 2 relates the story from the arrival of Cortes to the seige and destruction of Tenochtitlan. Vol. 2 as well contains a number of "Disertaciones" on various aspects of Mexio, eg the origen of the people, principal epochs, geographical description of the country, the fauna, a physical and "moral" description of the Mexicans, etc. Clavigero [1731 - 87] , a Mexican by birth, was expelled along with all of his fellow Jesuits, from Mexico in 1767. He spent the rest of his life in exile in Italy. He wrote this famous history of Mexico there, in Spanish, his native tongue, and then translated into Italian for publication: the first edition being Cesena (Italy), 1780 - 81. From the Italian Jose Joaquin de Mora translated it back into Spanish for this edition, the first in Spanish. Clavigero was a man of the Enlightenment and his approach to the subject is much advanced from the general run of Mexican histories written by ecclesiastics. In particular the treatment of the indigenous Aztecs was sensitive and sympathetic to a degree unknown before him. It is considered a classic of Mexican history. Very minor foxing here and there; the plates are quite clean; off-setting of the folding map opposite title page onto the title page. Very good copy.         Physiologie du gout, ou meditations de gastronomie transcendante. 2 vols.

Paris: A. Sautelet, 1826. ?Tell Me What You Eat and I Will Tell You What You Are? 1.Brillat-Savarin, Jean Anthelme (1755-1826). Physiologie du gout, ou méditations de gastronomie transcendante . . .2 vols., 8vo. [2], xiv, 390; 442pp. Paris: A. Sautelet et Cie., 1826. 206 x 126 mm. Quarter calf gilt, marbled boards ca. 1826, front hinge of Vol. I cracked, light edgewear. Occasional foxing but very good. First Edition. ?La physiologie du gout (1826) by Brillat-Savarin has been in print ever since its first publication, and is much the most famous of all gastronomic essays. It opens with a series of aphorisms, the most quoted of which is ?Tell me what you eat: I will tell you what you are.? These are followed by the 148 ?Gastronomic Meditations? in 30 chapters which form the bulk of the book. Brillat-Savarin sets out the physiological knowledge of the day, on the sense of taste, appetite, and the nutritional qualities of foodstuffs, but in a light and witty way enlivened by many anecdotes? (Mennell, All Manners of Food: Eating and Taste in England and France from the Middle Ages to the Present, p. 268). Vicaire, Bibliographie gastronomique, cols. 116-117.

Sylva Britannica; or, Portraits of Forest Trees distinguished for their Antiquity, Magnitude, or Beauty. Drawn from Nature and Etched by ... Strutt

London: Printed by A.J. Valpy, published by J.G. Strutt and Colnaghi & Co, 1826. Folio. (20 7/8 x 14 1/4 inches). 3pp. list of subscribers. Etched frontispiece and 49 etched plates, all proofs on India paper. Contemporary dark green half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt in six compartments with wide semi-raised bands, the bands highlighted with fillets and a decorative roll, lettered in gilt in the second compartment, the others with elaborate overall repeat decoration made up from small tools, cream glazed endpapers, gilt edges Deluxe India paper proof issue of the first edition of this charming work, offering portraits of individual great trees. Strutt was a landscape painter and etcher by training rather than a botanical draughtsman. He therefore approached his subjects with an artist's eye to structure and composition that lends an extra dimension to the finished images. The images are not only botanically accurate representations of individual trees, but also beautifully composed pictures of landscapes. The focus of each plate is the chosen tree or trees but they are always clearly rooted in the scenery that surrounds them, and are seen by Strutt as what they are: a point of focus, but still part of the larger landscape. Each plate is complemented by the lively and informative text, which generally gives details of the known history of each tree as well as recording its girth, height, spread and cubic footage of timber. From 1822 to 1833, Strutt's artistic and literary output was focused on trees and forest landscape. The first edition of the present work was published in 1826. Strutt later exhibited various studies of forest scenery in galleries, and from 1828 to 1833 he published Deliciae Sylvarum; or Grand romantic forest scenery in England and Scotland . Strutt subsequently moved to Rome where he concentrated on landscapes of Italian scenery.         No. 347. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES...AN ACT TO GIVE EFFECT TO THE PROVISIONS OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES RELATIVE TO FUGITIVES FROM LABOR FOR THE PROTECTION OF FREE PEOPLE OF COLOR AND TO PREVENT KIDNAPPING [caption title]

[Harrisburg, Pa., 1826. Folio. Dbd. Faint old fold lines. Roughly removed from a bound volume, resulting in some paper loss, not affecting text. Minor soiling; docketed on verso of last leaf. About very good. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives working draft, or "slip bill," of Pennsylvania's fugitive slave law, passed in 1826. Such drafts were printed, double spaced, for draft purposes while legislation was under consideration, and were generally only printed in sufficient numbers for the members on the floor. There is only one other copy of another issue noted on OCLC, but this version seems to be unique. This act makes it a felony to carry off or detain a slave with the intention to sell him/her, punishable by hefty fines and servitude. It further states that the owner of a runaway slave, or his acting agent, may apply to "any judge, justice of the peace or alderman" in Pennsylvania for a warrant to retrieve the lost property. The law also renders it a misdemeanor to "aid, abet or attempt the rescue of such a fugitive," punishable by fines and possible imprisonment. In 1780 the state of Pennsylvania passed an act for the gradual emancipation of slaves, and while slavery was not actually abolished entirely there until 1847, there were only a few hundred slaves left in the state in 1826. The law was not aimed internally, but passed under pressure from neighboring Maryland, since many slaves fled across the increasingly significant Mason-Dixon line into the "free" North. Pennsylvania long maintained that fugitive slave issues were covered by the federal act of 1793, but yielded to Maryland's pressure to create a formal system, though laborious, for slave owners to reclaim their property - the only northern state to do so. In fact, enforcement was increasingly lax, and slave holders took matters into their own hands. In 1837 a fugitive slave from Maryland, Margaret Morgan, had lived in York County, Pennsylvania for five years when a man named Edward Prigg, working for her owner, came to arrest her. Though he had a warrant, the county constable refused to help him, and Prigg forcibly removed the fugitive to Maryland. He was subsequently indicted in York County for kidnapping and found guilty. The case, Prigg vs. Pennsylvania, ultimately found its way to the Supreme Court, where the 1826 law was found unconstitutional in 1842. The repeal of this law left only the 1793 federal law, which was hardly enforceable, and a rising tide of southern demand for a law with teeth. This was ultimately realized in the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 - a path which began directly with the present act. The unique legislative draft version of a law which came to have great significance in Constitutional history and the story of slavery in the United States.

Autograph Manuscript of Irving's Christopher Columbus Working Manuscript of Irving's History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus

c.1826. Working Draft. Framed. Very Good +. One page (6 1/4" x 8 1/2"), handwritten working draft with a few corrections, numbered 450, ca.1826. Rare penned document with Excellent Content in by Washington Irving (1783-1859), America's great, popular, romantic yet scholarly author. Attractively framed (overall 17" x 14 3/4"), double-matted and glazed manuscript (6 1/4" x 8 1/2") and somewhat smaller engraving of the distinguished author. Irving's multi-volume biographical and historical study of Columbus grew out of his translations of Spanish source materials. His impressive work was published in 1828 and is now recognized as an important, early example of biography embelished by historical fiction. Superb dramatic content: "Over wild and desert wastes of water without a shore; or as perishing amidst roksw, and quicksands, and whirlppos; or a prey to those monsters of the deep with which credulity, in those days, peopled eery distant and unfrequented sea [note]. There was something more awful in such a mysterious fate, than in death itself, under any defined and ordinary form. When the news arrived, therefore, that one of the adenturous ships was standing up the river, the inhabitants were thrown into great agitation; but when they heard that she returned in triumph from the discovery of a world, and beheld her furling her sails in their harbor, the whole ommunity burst forth into a transport of joy. The bells were rung, the shops shut, all business was suspended; for a time there was nothing but the hurry and tumult of hidden exultation and breathless curiosity. Some were anxious to know the fate of a relative, others of a friend, and all to learn particulars of so wonderful a voyage. When Columbus landed." Irving has deleted a few words and penned new ones above, as well as adding a thoughful footnote at the bottom of the manuscript.
