STATISTICS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, INCLUDING A VIEW OF ITS NATURAL, CIVIL, AND MILITARY HISTORY, GENERAL AND PARTICULAR

Hurlbut and Lloyd, Charleston, S.C. 1826 - Howes M 627; Sabin 49118. From the period in Mill's career when he was the commissioner of the Board of Public Works in South Carolina and the superintendant of public building, before he won the competition for the design of the Washington Monument. This copy with the very fragile -- and uncommon -- handcolored folding map of "Sth. Carolina" which has some toning, but no tears. Howes notes that the map is "not in all copies [Howes M 627]. And Sabin notes that Statistics "is, in fact, a history of every thing connected with the State of South Carolina, of general or local interest" [Sabin 49188]. In publisher's boards; rebacked with a sympathetic new spine, preserving the original orange publisher's label. With half-title, map, folding "Statistical Table of the Several Districts" and errata as issued. The front flyleaf is clipped at the bottom corner. With foxing and toning throughout. Very Good binding. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Narrative of travels and discoveries in Northern and Central Africa in the years 1822, 1823 and 1824 by Major Denham and Captain Clapperton and the late Dr. Oudney, extending across the great desert to the tenth degree of northern latitude and from Kouka

London, John Murray, 1826. XLVIII, 335, 269 S., 1 Bl. Good copy of this exciting, impressively illustrated expedition report.         The Elephant and Castle on the Road to Brighton.

Published by J. Watson, 7 Vere Street, Feb. 7th, 1826., London, - The Elephant and Castle Engraving with aquatint and hand-colour. The Elephant and Castle Inn was a public house and busy staging post, probably deriving its name from the coat of arms of the Cutler's Guild, which feature an elephant as a nod to the use of ivory in cutlery handles. It gives its name to the present area of London. There are a variety of vehicles going past the inn, including a private coach, stage coaches going to Bognor and Brighton, and a wagon. Image: 540 by 766mm (21.25 by 30.25 inches). Sheet: 626 by 815mm (24.75 by 32 inches). Museum of London 002039.

Imprimerie de Mme veuve Agasse (1826), Paris - First edition. Published unbound. 12 p. Benjamin Constant's speech regarding a draft law related to the Haiti indemnity. After the successful slave rebellion of Saint-Domingue which culminated in the elimination of slavery and the founding of the Republic of Haiti it took more than twenty years until the French ruler, King Charles X of France recognised the independence of the island in return of 150 million gold franc indemnity in April 1825. The sum was later reduced to 90 million in 1838. The issue of the indemnity appeared again in 2003 when the President of Haiti demanded France to pay back over 21 billion U.S. dollars, the equivalent in today's money of the 90 million gold francs, however in 2004 the prime minister rescinded the reparations demand. Benjamin Constant (1767-1830) was a liberal politician and writer, one of the most visible of the French liberal party; he was elected to parliament in 1819, and later became president of the cabinet. Not in Sabin. We could trace only 3 copies in institutional holdings worldwide. First and last leaves slightly discoloured, torn at spine. Possessor's inscription on first page in ink.         Map of the County of Norfolk, from Actual Survey By A. Bryant, In the Years 1824, 1825, and 1826. Respectfully Dedicated to the Nobility, Clergy & Gentry, of the County.

Published by A. Bryant, 27, Great Ormund Street, Dec.r 1st, 1826., London, - The most important nineteenth century map of Norfolk Large scale engraved map, fine original hand-colour, dissected and mounted on linen, in two sections, key to map lower left, view of Norwich Cathedral lower right, edged in green silk, housed in full calf pull-off slipcase, red morocco label lettered in gilt to spine. Bryant's large scale map of Norfolk.A superbly detailed map in the Bryant tradition, one of thirteen counties surveyed between 1822 and 1835. The detail includes towns, villages, churches, buildings, castles, parks, gentleman's seats, commons, heaths and hills, parishes and other boundaries, broads, fens, canals, wind and water mills, fox covers, roads, lanes, toll bars and rivers. Though the two sections are almost completely filled by the map, Bryant manages to include a large calligraphic title and view of Norwich Cathedral without them being obtrusive. There is the usual list of "Ecclesiastical Divisions" and the "Explanation". The latter follows the pattern of Bryant in 1822, when he produced his first survey of Hertfordshire. One addition to the present map is the detail shown of the Fens and the Marshland, but a more regular feature is the careful delineation of cities and towns in an ichnographical manner, one of the great advances of the large scale map over its atlas counterpart. Scale: 1 1/4 inches to one statute mile. 1480 by 2300mm (58.25 by 90.5 inches). Rodger 324.

Map of the County of Southampton From an Actual Survey Made in the Years 1825 & 1826, By C. & J. Greenwood, and N. L. Kentish. Most Respectfully Dedicated to the Nobility, Clergy & Gentry of Hampshire.

Published by the Proprietors, Greenwood, Pringle & Co., Regent St., Pall Mall, June 15th, 1826., London, - Greenwood's large-scale map of Hampshire Large engraved map, dissected and mounted on linen, original full-wash colour, edged in green silk, slightly aged-toned, a few tears to old linen, housed within brown cloth slipcase, defective. The maps by Christopher and John Greenwood set new standards for large-scale surveys. Although they were unsuccessful in their stated aim to map all the counties of England and Wales it is probably no coincidence that of the ones they missed, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Oxfordshire, all except Cambridgeshire were mapped by Andrew Bryant in a similar style and at the same period. From a technical point of view the Greenwoods?Äô productions exceeded the high standards set in the previous century though without the decoration and charming title-pieces that typified large scale maps of that period. The Greenwoods started in 1817 with Lancashire and Yorkshire and by 1831 they had covered 34 counties. Their maps were masterpieces of surveying and engraving techniques, and in view of the speed at which they were completed, their accuracy is remarkable. They mark the boundaries of the counties, hundreds and parishes, churches and chapels, castles and quarries, farmhaouses and gentlemen?Äôs seats, heaths and common land, woods, parliamentary representatives and distances between towns. The price of 3 guineas each compares with the the first edition Ordnance Survey sheets of 7s 6d, though the latter did not relate to complete counties. 1580 by 1470mm (62.25 by 57.75 inches). Rodger

- Folio (31.5 x 20 cm.), unbound. Caption title. Uncut. A few short marginal tears. Very good to fine condition. (1 l.) *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The law decrees that the @estanco is to be transferred to the Treasury, for a period as long as Congress wills, and sets out the mechanism by which implementation and accounting are to be transferred to government officials. The law is signed (in print) by José Miguel Infante, who had recently (November 1825 to March 1826) served as Chile's supreme director, and at this time was a member of the Senate. The decree immediately following is signed (again in print) by Eyzaguirre. The @estanco (monopoly) for trade in tobacco, tea, foreign liquor, and playing cards was originally granted to Portales, Céa y Compañía, founded by Diego Portales (1793-1837), a member of a prominent merchant family in Santiago. In return for the monopoly, the company serviced Chile's foreign debt. Unfortunately the government was unable effectively to control such trade, and the company went bankrupt. Its memory lingered in the name of Portales's conservative followers, known as @estanqueros.In the 1830s, Portales, as leader of the conservatives and a proponent of a strong central government, was the power behind the president. Since he was largely responsible for the Chilean Constitution of 1833, his political beliefs remained influential for another century.*** Briseño I, 184. Not located in CCPBE. Not located in Rebiun.         Letter signed. N. p., 30. IV. 1826.

1826. 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. A secretarial letter signed by Sir Humphry Davy ("H. Davy") as President of the Royal Society, to one "Sir", marked "Private & confidential", explaining that, as President, he is unable to interfere in elections, mentioning that Fellows are divided into two classes, "working scientific men" and "Patrons of Science", going on to explain that professional men should offer "some paper or communication which may imply qualification" though "this rule has not been so strictly attended to as it ought to have been". - At this time, a year before Davy gave up the Presidency, the Royal Society was "teetering between remaining a gentleman's club and becoming an academy of science. Davy favoured judicious modernizing [...] He made publication an important factor in election, but, lacking the social status of Banks, he was unable to force his will upon the fellows, and found himself between hostile camps" (David Knight, ODNB). - Two light stains, and some slight damage to edges.

[Buenos Aires]: Imprenta Argentina, 1826. 12pp. Small quarto. 20th-century three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt. Edges and spine lightly worn, upper outer joint moderately worn. Contemporary number inscription in top margin of first page of text. Lower right corners of first two leaves chipped. In April 1819 a constitution was approved establishing a congress with two legislative branches and an elected chief executive. Due to the local political situation, however, that constitution was not fully enacted. A new constitution, promoting a centralized system of government, was eventually drafted in 1826. This manifesto of the government's constitutional commission, presented to the Argentine representatives, reviews various aspects of the 1819 Constitution and proposes changes to be effected in the new document. An extremely rare publication concerned with the early constitutional period in Argentina. OCLC locates only a single copy in the national Library of Chile. PALAU 148972. OCLC 55255075.

A comparative view of the various institutions for the assurance of lives.

London: printed for J. Mawman and sold by J. Booth, 1826. First edition, inscribed presentation copy, of Babbage’s first substantial published work, the first thorough treatise on actuarial theory, complete with folding table of mortality statistics, generally considered the first reliable life table. It serves as an early example of the desire and need for accurate statistics and calculations that would be a driving force throughout Babbage's life. (He was, after all, the man who reputedly once wrote to poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and demanded he change the lines: “Every moment dies a man, Every moment one is born” to “Every moment dies a man, Every moment one and one-sixteenth is born.”) In this work, Babbage “provided a simple guide to the quantitative basis of life insurance and fulminated against “the disgraceful practices which prevail at some assurance offices” (p. ix), such as allowing lawyers and other interested parties to sell policies on commission. Babbage's book was translated into German in 1827, and formed the basis for the Life Assurance Bank of Gotha, which also adopted Babbage's actuarial tables” (OOC). ABPC/RBH record ten copies in the last 50 years, none of them presentation copies.</p> <p><em>Provenance</em>: Inscribed by Babbage on title page “to the library of Queens’ College, Cambridge, from the Author,” and dated July 1831; bookplate and withdrawal stamp of Queens’ College, Cambridge on title verso.</p> <p>“Babbage was still troubled by his father's nagging complaints that for all his talents he would never receive proper financial reward. Moreover it was necessary to educate the growing family and provide for their future. For some time Babbage had considered working in assurance and in 1824 he had been invited by the founders to organize a new life company which was being formed called The Protector.’ The company had impressive backing, including that of the Marquis of Lansdowne, Lord Abercromby, a clutch of directors of the Bank of England and the East India Company, and sundry other eminent and respectable gentlemen. Babbage was offered £1,500 a year, with liberty to practice as an independent actuary, and apartments over the establishment. His friend Francis Baily FRS, who had practised as an actuary, advised Babbage that he could easily make £1,000 per annum from free-lance actuarial work. How easily an educated man could pass from one profession to another at that time!</p> <p>“Babbage calculated the requisite tables for the new company from the actual mortality rates of people insured by the Equitable Society, established in 1762. Subscriptions had been raised and all arrangements were complete for opening The Protector Life Assurance Company at offices in Frederick’s Place, Old Jewry, when the plan was abandoned, two of the directors having proved awkward. Babbage received a hundred guineas in return for his ‘valuable services’, which just about covered his expenses. He was well respected for the part he had played and made valuable political friends through the venture. The plan was not completely given up and another opportunity arose in due course for Babbage to run a life assurance company. However after experiencing the amount of work involved he felt obliged to choose between the Difference Engine and assurance: the Difference Engine won.</p> <p>“But it would have been out of character for Babbage simply to drop the subject. He continued his studies, expanding the field of interest, and wrote a book called A <em>Comparative View of the Various Institutions for the Assurance of Lives.</em> It was at once an analysis of the life assurance offices and a consumer's guide. If only consumer's guides were as well written today! The opening has the authentic Babbage ring: ‘In exposing the disgraceful practices which prevail at some assurance offices ... I feel that little more is requisite than by rendering those practices known, to make them universally condemned’ [p. ix]. But he was strongly in favour of life assurance as contributing to social stability. The actuaries, he said, are usually men of skill and ability, but the public should know that their advice ‘is frequently neutralized by passing through the ordeal of a board of directors, far too intent on profit, and who in their joint capacity, esteem it no degradation to sanction measures, which they would be very sorry to be considered as acting upon in their character as individuals’ [p. xi].</p> <p>“Babbage then gave an excellent simple guide to the quantitative basis of life assurance, discussing the mortality tables on which assurance premiums were calculated. The figures of the Equitable Society suggested that there had been little change in mortality rates since its foundation. If this is correct it indicates that life expectancy among the section of the population taking out assurance policies (for those of sufficiently mature age to take out assurance) was little changed between the 1760s and the beginning of the nineteenth century.</p> <p>“Assurance organizations were established on three bases: mutual, or cooperative; private; and offices which offered what would now be called with- profit policies. Babbage speaks warmly of the Equitable and Amicable mutual offices as ‘great institutions ... unfettered by the partial and contending interest of any proprietory. Founded alike for the mutual benefit of all who choose to become members, they have pursued their separate course, diffusing comfort and security over a multitude of families: they form, as it were, a portion of the public’ [p. 14]. A marked contrast is provided by private offices paying a commission to agents. The agents were not employed by the company but were the solicitor, broker, or other expert consulted by the person taking out insurance. There was plenty of opportunity for corruption there. Babbage gives an</p> <p>example of a lawyer who had advised a clergyman to take a highly disadvantageous policy on which the lawyer received a commission.</p> <p>“<em>In contemplating with scorn the mercenary agent who betrayed, for so trifling a sum, the confidence reposed in him by his client ... ought not some portion of our indignation to be reserved for those who tempted him to this breach of trust?~' ... It will naturally be enquired who authorized the practice we have been reprobating, and whether the long lists of respectable names, displayed at the head of many of these institutions, are placed there only to beguile the unwary, and to lead them to suppose that the same honourable principles, which govern the directors in their private capacity, willbeadheredtowhen theyacttogetherasabody. There aremany persons thus situated, whose known integrity or high rank make it impossible to suppose, that they are aware of a practice thus carried on in their name</em>” [pp. 137-140].</p> <p>“In spite of his reservations about some private insurance companies Babbage was strongly in favour of private enterprise. There was plenty of room for mutual and co-operative organizations, and the Government should only step in where private or co-operative organizations could not cope. An excellent example of such a situation was provided by the calculating engines: there was no profit in them for an individual but great potential benefit for the public weal” (Hayman, pp. 58-60).</p> <p>Hayman, <em>Charles Babbage. Pioneer of the Computer</em>, 1982; Kress 24945; A. W. Van Sinderen, ‘The printed papers of Charles Babbage,’ <em>Annals of the History of Computing</em>, Vol. 2, 1980, pp. 169-85, no. 26; <em>Origins of Cyberspace</em> 36. 8vo, pp. xxxi, 170, [27], with one folding table. 19th century half calf.         Feyerliche Einweihung der Synagoge in München den 21. April 1826

      - Printing in Hebrew. 23 pages. Small 4to, orig. blue boards, gilt border round sides, contrasting pink endpapers, a.e.g. Munich: C. Wolf, [1826]. The extremely rare printed program for the inauguration of the first public synagogue in Munich on 21 April 1826. The impressive neoclassical building on the Westenriederstrasse was designed and erected by Jean Baptiste Métivier for the small but important Munich community of court Jews and state suppliers founded in 1815. The project was supported by King Max I Joseph of Bavaria, and his successor Ludwig I attended the ceremony with his wife and members of the nobility. Contemporary journals praised the festive character of the event. The inauguration speech was given by Hirsch Aub who became rabbi of the new synagogue through more than four decades. The director of the royal chapel and opera, Joseph Hartmann Stunz, and the royal intendant Johann Nepomuk von Poissl set prayers, psalms and a long hymn to music. The instrumental parts were executed by the King's musicians. The ceremony ended with the Ha-noten teshu'a (a prayer for the welfare of the King and his family) and the evening prayers for Sabbath and Pesach. Much printing in Hebrew. A crisp and large copy on thick paper. In fine condition, from the Wittelsbach library of the dukes and kings of Bavaria. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
