        London

      London: Baldwin & Cradock. London: Baldwin & Cradock. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand outline coloring. Image measures 15.5 x 24.5". This fine town plan offers an incredibly detailed look at mid-19th century London. The river Thames snakes along the lower half of the map, and the city's streets and railroads extend out from it. Major roads are colored yellow, water is blue, and parks are rendered in green. Two insets in the upper right below the title offer views of the London Tower from London Bridge and of the city skyline from Copenhagen Fields. Below the map are views of the facades of 25 structures in the city, titled as "A comparison of the principal buildings of London." This plan, a beloved example of S.D.U.K's work, is particularly interesting because London was the home base of the house's prolific production. The map is in good condition with original folds as issued. Narrow margins as is common with these maps. Overall toning but no significant chips or creases. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, or SDUK, was formed in 1826 and published low cost maps with the goal of reaching a large market while still maintaining high quality and precision. This fine map exemplifies its work.

        Bibliotheca Classica

      London - T. Cadell, 1826. London - T. Cadell, 1826 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce classical dictionary from the early nineteenth century by John Lempriere. John Lemprire (c. 1765, Jersey, February 1, 1824, London) was English classical scholar, lexicographer, theologian, teacher and headmaster. He achieved renown for his Bibliotheca Classica or Classical Dictionary containing a full Account of all the Proper Names mentioned in Ancient Authors, (Reading, November, 1788), which, edited by various later scholars, long remained a readable reference book in mythology and classical history. Lemprire wished to give the most accurate and satisfactory account of all the proper names which occur in reading the Classics, and by a judicious collection of anecdotes and historical facts to draw a picture of ancient times, not less instructive than entertaining. (Lemprire, Preface, 1788). It has been a handbook for teachers, journalists, dramatists and poets for almost two hundred years and John Keats is said to have known the book almost by heart. Far from being just an ordinary dictionary, however, Lemprire's encyclopedic work is full of incidental details and stories which bring the mythical past to life. Condition: Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with just some minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Title page missing. Ink signature to endpapers. Pages are mainly bright and clean, with just some foxing and handling marks to the first few pages. Overall:GOOD..

        The Last of the Lairds: or, the Life and Opinions of Malachi Mailings, esq. of Auldbiggings

      Edinburgh and London - William Blackwood and T. Cadell, 1826. Edinburgh and London - William Blackwood and T. Cadell, 1826 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Adrily amusingScottish social commentarynovel by JohnGalt. First Edition. John Galt (2 May 1779 11 April 1839) was a Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commenter. Galt at first directed his ambitions mainly to commerce, but many of his ventures failed. Galt was back in London by 1811 and in the following year the first of his books were published: Life of Cardinal Wolsey, Voyages and Travels, and a collection of plays in blank verse. He was sent by a merchant in Glasgow to open a branch in Gibraltar, but within a year he had to return to London for surgery. Since all his business ventures had come to nothing, he decided to try to earn his living by his pen. He also accepted appointment as what should now be called a lobbyist on behalf of the company promoting the Union Canal between Edinburgh and Glasgow. This gave the familiarity with Westminster and Whitehall which was the basis subsequently both of his involvement in Canadian affairs and of his political novels. In spite of the success of his novels Galt had not abandoned his ambitions in other directions. His parliamentary lobbying experience and his childhood interest in Canada came together in his next venture. Canadians who had suffered losses when the United States invaded in 1812 had been trying in vain to extract compensation from the British government. In 1820 Galt had agreed to act on their behalf, but after two years of effort the government still evaded payment. He then produced another scheme, a proposal for a company to raise capital for the development and settlement of land in Ontario. This could earn revenue which could be used to meet the claims. The company was formed in 1824 with Galt as secretary. He sailed to Canada in 1826 to direct operations there, leaving with Blackwood another novel in his best manner, The Last of the Lairds. DNBCondition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally very sound, rubbed to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Lovely and bright with lightscattered foxing. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        Relation d'un voyage sur le bord septentrional de la mer d'Azof et en Crimée, dans la vue d'y établir une colonie d'émigrés.

      Paris, Kilian 1826 - In-8. Collation : 10, 381, (2) pp. Demi-chagrin rouge, dos orné, armes dorées au centre des plats. (Reliure de l'époque.) Première édition. Le Prince de Condé demanda à Catherine II de Russie un asile pour son armée. En janvier 1793, l'impératrice proposa aux émigrés français, un établissement sur la mer d'Azof, dans le cas ou la République française se consoliderait. Cette colonie aurait eu le Prince de Condé pour chef. Le projet n'aboutit pas, mais le Comte de Castries, Maréchal de camp, participa à un voyage préparatoire, qu'il relate ici. Avec un fac similé hors-texte d'une lettre du Prince de Condé. Exemplaire aux armes de l'impératrice Marie-Louise (1791-1847). Fille aînée de l'empereur François Ier d'Autriche, elle épousa en 1809 Napoléon Ier. Quand celui-ci est vaincu par la sixième coalition, Marie-Louise décida de ne pas le suivre dans son exil à l'île d'Elbe, et rentra avec son fils à la cour de Vienne. Le congrès de Vienne lui accorda, en 1815, les Duchés de Parme, Plaisance et Guastalla. Elle n'avait alors que 24 ans. Très bel exemplaire. // You can browse all my books on latude.net

        A Summary of the Principal Evidences for the Truth and Divine Origin of the Christian Revelation

      London - T. Cadell, 1826. London - T. Cadell, 1826 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A Christian essay intended for the instruction of young people following their confirmation. Beilby Porteus (1731 1809), successively Bishop of Chester and of London was an Anglican reformer and leading abolitionist in England. He was the first Anglican in a position of authority to seriously challenge the Church's position on slavery. Hewas one of the most significant, albeit underrated church figures of the eighteenth century. His sermons continued to be read by many, and his legacy as a foremost abolitionist was such that his name was almost as well-known in the early nineteenth century as those of Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson but a hundred years later he had become one of the forgotten abolitionists, and today his role has largely been ignored and his name has been consigned to the footnotes of history. His primary claim to fame in the twenty-first century is for his poem on Death and, possibly unfairly, as the supposed prototype for the pompous Mr Collins in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Condition: In a half-morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally smart, with just some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        The History of Sandford and Merton

      sp;- London - J. F. Dove, 1826. sp;- London - J. F. Dove, 1826 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce copy of the Dove's English Classics edition of Thomas Day's philosophical children's book. With a frontispiece and additional illustrated title. Thomas Day (22 June 1748 28 September 1789) was a British author and abolitionist. He was well-known for the bestselling children's book The History of Sandford and Merton (17831789) which emphasized Rousseauvian educational ideals. Despite its title, The History of Sandford and Merton is not a history in the modern sense but rather an assemblage of stories Day both wrote himself and extracted from a multitude of sources. The text embodies many of the educational and philosophical tenets espoused by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whom Day admired greatly. Sandford and Merton was his way of presenting Rousseau's philosophy to British children in the form of fiction. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally sound though the cloth has split and has slight loss. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright with light scattered spotting, particularly bad to thefrontis and illustrated title and last few pages,and small spill burns to the first few pages. Ink signature to recto of frontispiece.         Brambletye House;

      Paris - A. and W. Galignani, 1826. Paris - A. and W. Galignani, 1826 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An absolutely beautifully boundset of Horace Smith's Brambletye House. Smith (1779 1849) was an English poet and novelist, perhaps best known for his participation in a sonnet-writing competition with Percy Bysshe Shelley. It was of him that Shelley said: Is it not odd that the only truly generous person I ever knew who had money enough to be generous with should be a stockbroker He writes poetry and pastoral dramas and yet knows how to make money, and does make it, and is still generous. Brambletye was Smith's first historical novel - written after he made his fortune as a stockbroker - and is based during the English Civil War. First edition. Complete in three volumes. Condition: Uniformly bound in half calf over marbled boards. Externally, excellent with just some very light rubbing to boards and extremities. Internally, firmly bound.         Carmina

      London - A. and R. Spottiswoode, 1826. London - A. and R. Spottiswoode, 1826 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractive edition of Horace's Odes. In Latin. Recensuitet in ordine metrorum dispertivit. Quintus Horatius Flaccus (8 December 65 BC 27 November 8 BC), known in the English-speaking world as Horace, was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. The rhetorician Quintillian regarded his Odes as almost the only Latin lyrics worth reading, justifying his estimate with the words: He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words. The Odes (Latin Carmina) are a collection in four books of Latin lyric poems by Horace. The Horatian ode format and style has been emulated since by other poets. Books 1 to 3 were published in 23 BC. According to the journal Quadrant, they were unparallelled by any collection of lyric poetry produced before or after in Latin literature. A fourth book, consisting of 15 poems, was published in 13 BC. The Odes were developed as a conscious imitation of the short lyric poetry of Greek originals. Pindar, Sappho and Alcaeus are some of Horace's models; his genius lay in applying these older forms to the social life of Rome in the age of Augustus. The Odes have been considered traditionally by English-speaking scholars as purely literary works. Recent evidence by a Horatian scholar suggests they were intended as performance art, a Latin re-interpretation of Greek lyric song. Publisher's catalogue to front few pages. Collated complete from the British Library catalogue, UIN: BLL01001733268. Condition: Expertly rebound in a half morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Slight loss and browning to first page of publisher's catalogue. Very slight water damage to bottom of firstfew pages. Otherwise bright and clean with only the odd spot.         Rapports au roi Charles X sur l'état de l'armée].

      1826-1827., 1826-1827. 1826 - In-4. Collation : Demi-basane rouge, dos orné de filets dorés. (Reliure de la fin du XIXe.) Ensemble de rapports MANUSCRITS d'Aimé-Marie-Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre, alors Ministre de la Guerre ou rassemblés par ses soins. Ce sont des copies, très soigneuses, de plusieurs mains. Clermont-Tonnerre a annoté au moins une pièce. Il a été ministre d'Août 1824 à Janvier 1828. - [Clermont-Tonnerre]. Rapport particulier au Roi sur notre situation militaire et sur les besoins de la France en ce qui concerne le département de la guerre. (2), 83 pp. (Janvier 1826). Long plaidoyer pour le rétablissement de l'armée française, alors que le budget pour 1827 va être voté. Le Ministre explique longuement l'état déplorable de l'armée et de l'esprit militaire dans le pays. Il s'étend loguement sur les causes historiques, Révolution, Empire, première Restauration. Il propose donc des économies et demande une forte augmentation de son budget. Plus étonnant, il s'interroge "si dans l'état actuel des esprits, la guerre ne serait pas un reméde au mal moral qui travaille la société." - Rapport au Roi du 7 Mai 1826. (7) pp. Sur le casernement à Paris, à l'occasion de l'établissement de la caserne du Trocadéro. Une note en marge de la main de Clermont-Tonnerre : "J'ajoutais en m'adressant au Roi, si dans 10 ans, 20 ans, ou 30, il y avait une grande sédition à Paris (.)" - Rapport au Roi du 1826. (11) pp. - Rapport au Roi. (9) pp. et 4 grands tableaux dépliants. Sur la réduction du traitement des officiers généraux. Note à la fin : "Tout a été ajourné à cause de la dépense." - Projet. Sire. (5) pp. (1827) - DUFOUR. Intendence de la 3e division. . Inspection administrative de 1825. Metz, Novembre 1825. (36) pp. - DOLISIE. 3e régiment d'infanterie légère. Rapport sur les masses dites d'économie, sur leurs emplois et sur les moyens de les détruire. (67) pp. Dax, Septembre 1825. - [Diverses copies de lettres, rapports :] Lettre sur le moyen de supprimer les masses secrètes. Note des besoins indispensables d'un corps de cavalerie légère. Projet de lettre aux chefs des corps. etc. (16) pp. - Plusieurs rapports au Roi du Ministre ou des notes. (Décembre 1826- Janvier 1827). (36) pp. - Considérations sur la crise actuelle. Décembre 1827. (19) pp. Clermont-Tonnerre a écrit ce texte peu de temps avant sa démission du Ministère. "Il ne peut cependant se résoudre à quitter son poste sans donner une analyse lucide de la situation, sous la forme d?une note transmise au roi, écrite en décembre 1827 et intitulée "Considérations sur la crise actuelle". Analyse politique mais aussi tactique de la situation globale dans laquelle se trouve le royaume, la note de Clermont-Tonnerre annonce en quelque sorte les deux années qui verront la condamnation du régime : "ainsi par la force des choses, l?idée même de révolution subsiste et la légitimité doit résister constamment à l?action de la conspiration de l?illégitimité et de la République réunie" ciblant, à raison, le poids sans cesse croissant des classes moyennes qui seront dans les faits, le fer de lance de la contestation de 1830." Vincent Haegele, Le marquis de Clermont Tonnerre, ministre de la Guerre, et le renforcement de l?armée française sous Charles X (1825-1828), Revue historique des armées [En ligne].
