Physiologie du gout, ou meditation de gastronomie transcendante; ouvrage theorique, historique et a l'ordre du jour, dedie aux gastronomie parisiens

Paris: Sautelet et Cie, 1826. Two volumes, octavo, xiv, 390 & 449 pages. contemporary quarter calf and marbled boards Light wear at extremities, otherwise in very good condition. First edition of the most famous treatise on gastronomy. The Physiology of Taste was published in an edition of 500 copies, appearing only two months after the author's death. The book is a comprehensive philosophy of the palate and of the table, and far beyond, presented in a series of thirty meditations on subjects such as the senses, taste, appetite, gastronomy, restaurateurs, cooking, fasting, obesity, death, sleep, rest and dreams. Brillat-Savarin was an attorney and magistrate who fled France during the Terror, living in Switzerland and New York until his return after the fall of Robespierre in 1796. The present work secured his eternal fame among gastronomes. The charming American writer and translator of Brillat-Savarin, M.F.K. Fisher commends the work for its straightforward and unornamented prose in an era of florid writing, but the intellectual range and invention of the work is anything but simple. At the very outset: "1. The Universe is nothing without the things that live in it, and everything that lives eats. 2. Animals feed themselves; men eat; but only wise men know the art of eating. 3. The destiny of nations depends on how they nourish themselves." It may be noted that Brillat-Savarin regularly refers to his gastronomic experience in America. [Cagle 98; Crahan 491; Oberle 144; Vicaire 116; Wheaton & Kelly 860].

        The Kan-ga-roo

Boston: Pendletons Lithography circa, 1826. Lithograph, 140 x 210 mm., mounted with accompanying text on card measuring 390 x 275 mm., a little foxing yet well preserved, recent archival mount and frame. Early composite educational poster combining lithography and letterpress, here using a Kanagroo to teach the letter 'K'.The image of the kangaroo was printed from stone by the early North American lithographers William and John Pendleton who ran a studio located in Boston's Graphic Court. Although their business was of limited duration, operating for just under eleven years between 1825 and 1836, the quality of their output was high by the standards of American lithography. In 1825 John Pendleton purchased a lithographic press in Boston but lacked the experience to deploy the machinery until his brother returned from Europe with practical printing experience. Over the coming decade several staff and apprentices, including Nathaniel Currier, acquired the skills to establish their own lithographic studios. The descriptive letterpress below the image bears the different imprint of Munroe and Francis (also Boston printers). Clearly image and text were mounted on large cards for teaching purposes, one for each letter of the alphabet. The text gives some insight into the habits of this iconic Australian animal for curious American youngsters. We learn, for example, that the Kan-Ga-Roo can jump the length of a room so quickly that no dog can catch him, rests upon his hind legs and raises young in a pouch.

The Naval History of Great Britain,

London: Harding, Lepard, and Co.,, 1826. From the Declaration of War by France in 1793, to the Accession of George IV. in 1820. A New Edition, with Considerable Additions and Improvements, including Diagrams of all the Principal Actions. 6 volumes, octavo (216 × 134 mm). Contemporary half calf by Duffield & Weller of Cheltenham, marbled boards, all rebacked to style with original black morocco lettering- and numbering-pieces laid down. Battle-plans to the text, 28 folding tables of abstracts. Boards somewhat rubbed, browning throughout, in places heavy as often, but overall a very good set. The second edition, revised and expanded, the first published in five volumes 1822-4. A "monument of accuracy - it has stood the test of time and remains the best account of the naval side of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars" (Kemp, The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea, p. 425). First conceived of when he was held prisoner in America during the War of 1812 the Naval History is a remarkable work. Working under the motto "Verité sans Peur", James set himself standards of inclusiveness and accuracy extraordinary for the 19th century. His aim was to compile "... an exact account of every operation of naval war during the period named. He consulted not only published works, especially the official narratives, both British and French, but also the logs of the ships, and, whenever possible, the participants themselves" (ODNB). The "greater portion" of the sixth volume "is made up of the operations of the late american [sic.]war" (Preface). Successively mined by Forester and O'Brian for incident and colour, this well-written history is not only essential reference for the period, but makes excellent reading. This copy with the ownership inscriptions of one John Hancock to the front pastedowns, with his marginal notes on a number of pages, including a detailed list of ships in Lord Howe's fleet to the front free endpaper of volume III, and detailed notes on his rôle - written in the third person - at Copenhagen as Lieut. John Hancock, commanding the boats, in saving the Holstein, later renamed the Nassau. Pleasing contemporary naval provenance.

CATALOGUE GÉNÉRAL DES ARBRES, ARBUSTES ET PLANTES, Tant De Serre Que De Pleine Terre, Cultivés Dans Les Jardins Et Pépinières De L. Noisette.

Paris: Rousselon: , 1826. Paris: Rousselon 1826. General catalogue of this important French nursery located in Paris. Son of the head gardener for the comte de Provence (later King Louis XVIII), Noisette started his own nursery in Paris in 1806. He focused, from the beginning, on the collection of choice and exotic plants from around the world. His brother Philippe, posted to America by the French government, was among the many correspondents who sent him seeds and plants from Asia and the Americas. Many of these were first introduced into European cultivation through Noisette's nursery, which attracted the business of numerous wealthy clients. Especially notable was Prince Nicolas II Esterházy, who engaged Noisette to lay out and plant his extensive properties in Austria. Although Noisette's large nursery had significant collections in all categories, he was most widely known for his rare ornamental plants, especially roses. Noisette roses are named for him, and his nursery carried over 1000 different varieties of rose, nearly all of them listed here. Noisette published two much smaller catalogues in 1825. The first of these, 27 pages, was devoted only to fruit trees. The second, devoted to dahlias, roses and other flowering shrubs, had only 19 pages. The present catalogue, with 101 pages of listings, appears to be the only general catalogue to have been issued by the nursery. It includes over 9000 varieties divided into four primary sections: hot house plants; plants for the orangery; hardy plants and shrubs; and hardy herbaceous plants. Over twelve pages are devoted just to roses. 8vo (21.5 x 13.8 cm); 8 + 102 pp. Original marbled paper wrappers with printed paper labels; backstrip very worn; small section at edge of front wrapper and first two leaves worn away; occasional mild foxing, but otherwise well preserved.

When his satirical poetry offended some powerful citizens of his native city, he was sent to serve in the army at Colonia do Sacramento, in present-day Uruguay, for several years, until 1762. After another 7 or 8 years in Rio de Janeiro he moved to Lisbon, where he became the protégé of the Count of Pombeiro and was widely acclaimed as a singer and poet until his sudden death in 1800. Varnhagen describes the author's popularity in Lisbon society: his presence "se tornou quase uma necessidade de todas as festas, sobretudo nas partidas do campo. Nas aristocráticas reuniões das Caldas, nos cansados banhos de mar, nos pitorescos passeios de Sintra, em Belas, em Queluz, em Benfica, sociedade onde não se ahcava o fulo Caldas com sua viola não se julgava completa" (@Florilégio da poesia brasileira, quoted in W. Martins II:7, n. 578).A founder and president of the major literary establishment in Portugal during the eighteenth century, the Nova Arcadia, Caldas Barbosa's nom-de-plume was "Lereno"?hence @Viola de Lereno, "Lereno's guitar." Bandeira describes Caldas Barbosa as the "first Brazilian whose poetry has an entirely native flavor" (@Brief History of Brazilian Literature p. 61). He introduced Afro-Brazilian folk themes to Portugal by composing @lundas, comic popular songs of African origin in which Brazilian-Indian and African speech were used, and wrote many @modinhas, sentimental songs without music taken from Portuguese @modas.Sílvio Romero (quoted in the Rio de Janeiro, 1944 edition of @Viola de Lereno, ed. I, 73: "very rare"; @Período colonial pp. 47-50. Blake II, 200-2.         Archive of 9 Autograph Letters to Elizabeth Adkins (My dear E., my little Favorite, etc.) and 3 to others

1826 - Folio (mostly) & 4to. William Upcott was the collector par excellence of all manner of items, every inch of the walls of his rooms and every drawer being crammed with his collections. He was the assistant librarian at the London Instiution (1806-1834). Booksellers know him principally as the author of Bibliographical Account of the Principal Works Relating to English Topography (1818), which is still in use.Nine of the present letters were written to his close friend Elizabeth Adkins, and are written in a loquacious, highly amusing style. Of special interest among this group is the story of the troubles he had moving his collections, which he insisted on doing himself (24 March 1813); and the tiresome task of arranging and cataloguing thelibrary of a gentleman in Kent (22 August 1814).With permission slip for Mr. Audinet to examine a print of Cromwell's Parliament (24 January, 1826). ALS to William HoneBookseller asking him to purchase an autograph of Mr. Ashland (July 1, 1882).The other to Mr Dewe informs him of Upcott's visiting hours.

The author was a prominent Scottish Utilitarian economist, philosopher, and ally of Jeremy Bentham's; he freely acknowledged never having visited India himself. This is the third edition, following the first of 1817; the set is in the publisher's original bindings, and an uncut copy. => Vol. I opens with an oversized, folding, hand-colored "Map of Hindoostan" done by Aaron Arrowsmith, while vol. IV with upper and lower margins of one internal signature and last few leaves stained; vol. VI with upper edges of portion towards back stained. A few instances of scattered spotting; three leaves with short edge tears; first few leaves of vol. VI creased. Page edges untrimmed. London: R Ackermann, 1826 2 volumes. xxxii+442 pages with foldout frontispiece map, tables and 19 plates (one folding); iv+449+[2 ad] pages with foldout frontispiece map one plate. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4" bound in half red leather with gilt lettering to spine, marbled boards and marbled page ends. Translated from the Italian edition, first published in Cesena, 1780-81) by Jose Joaquin de Mora. (Palau 55481; Sabin 13520) First edition into Spanish.Francisco Javier Clavijero was a Novohispano Jesuit teacher, scholar and historian. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish colonies (1767), he went to Italy, where he wrote a valuable work on the pre-Columbian history and civilizations of Mesoamerica and the central Mexican altiplano.Clavijero?s Historia antigua de México was the most influential history of Mexico since Jose de Acosta?s Historia natural y moral de las Indias in 1590. It was, according to Clavijero, a history of Mexico written by a Mexican. His historical work, written in Italy, offers an amazing combination of Scholastic theology, modern natural history, enlightened history, and a criticism of enlightenment that anticipated Romanticism. Clavijero was one of the most engaged interlocutors of Cornelius De Pauw and Buffon in the "Dispute of the New World". According to his biographer Juan Maneiro, he was already writing his Historia Antigua de México when the Philosophical Investigations by De Pauw came out. An enlightened view of the historical process predominates in his Historia antigua de México. This can be seen in his encyclopedic spirit, as well as in his use of primary sources and the writings of other recognized historians in his only historical work. It is a quite admirable is his view of the historical development of Mexican Indians as a social phenomenon with roots in the pre-Hispanic past, without connecting them to any ancient people from other continents. In the words of José Emílio Pereira, his Historia Antigua de México is an essential piece for the recuperation of the Indian world - particularly the Aztec one - from the triple perspective of Catholicism, classical culture and enlightenment. By opposing certain aspects of European enlightened philosophy Clavijero is offering a Creole enlightenment. Elías Trabuse diagnoses in him an attraction toward the enlightened philosophers and historians in search of a meaning in History, breaking with the antiquarian historians who reduce their works to a compilation of facts. But, differently from them, he did not assume an attitude of neglecting the details. At the same time that Clavijero broke with the schemes of this Spanish historiography, he confronted the bias and preconceptions of the "philosophical history" from the depreciators of the Americas.Condition:Corners bumped and rubbed, rubbing to hinges, early spine tags, inked number stamps to title pages, monor foxing and offsetting.         Autograph Letter signed, to Hon. Isaac Wayne, Congressman from Pennsylvania and son of the Revolutionary War hero General Anthony Wayne

Washington, D.C. 1826 - 2 full pages. 1 vols. 4to. Predicting 1828 - a Letter to the Son of "Mad Anthony" Wayne. A superb letter in which the future President discusses candidly the prospects of the candidates in the 1828 Presidential election - John Quincy Adams vs. Andrew Jackson. Buchanan had originally been a supporter of Henry Clay when he first went to Congress, but in the election of 1824, he supported Andrew Jackson. Famously, that election was decided by the House of Representatives when Clay threw his support to John Quincy Adams, thus defeating Jackson, who had won a plurality of the electoral vote. Writing to his fellow Congressman from Pennsylvania, Buchanan observes:"?I think ? that the fate of Mr. [John Quincy] Adams in the next contest is already determined. He cannot be re-elected unless Gen. Jackson should in the mean time die or be rendered unable to discharge the duties of President. We have no reason to apprehend either of these events; as his health is now much better than it has been for several years. Doubt no longer rest upon the course which will be pursued by Virginia, North Carolina & Georgia. New York will without doubt be hostile to the re-election of Mr. Adams; and if it has not yet, like the three States I have mentioned, taken any decided course, it is on account of their local politics. Jackson has nothing to fear from Adams in that State; though it is possible Clinton may give him trouble. "Conjecture is busy upon the subject, who will be the successor of Mr. King? Some think it will be Mr. Webster whilst other say Mr. Brown will be sent to England & Mr Gallatin take his station at Paris. I have no data on which to form an opinion. - The whole course of the administration has proved that every appointment is made either with a view of rewarding past services or of obtaining new friends. Mr. Clay is, between you & myself, the President ?". Fine, in half red morocco drop box

Baillière, Paris 1826 - In-8. Collation : (4), II, 446 pp. Demi-basane brune, dos orné. (Reliure de l'époque.). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Première édition. Garrison & Morton 4797: "A classical description of general paralysis. Calmeil's work complements Bayle's earlier delineation of general paralysis. Between the two of them they established the clinical picture of general paralysis of the insane, associating it with chronic inflammation of the brain. This was the first breakthrough in neuro-psychiatric research, and it gave psychiatry the spur to precise and systematic clinical, pathological and statistical innovation on its own terms."
