Howitt, S.; Atkinson; Clark; Manskirch; etc.
Edward Orme. Printed by J. F. Dove 1814, 1813, London. 4to. 28 by 22 cm. Unpaginated. 110 hand-colored plates. 107 of these are aquatints, two are line engravings, and one, a stipple and line engraving. Second title page for the New South Wales section. Each plate accompanied by one to four pages of explanatory text -- most are one or two pages long, though. The plates and the stories they tell are immensely varied in both the geographic location of the scenes and the type of hunting depicted. Not only are all continents represented, but also, such activities as whalehunting are included. Animals are shown in their own hunts, and even pursuing humans as well. One such plate, for instance, shows men desperately climbing a tree to escape a rhinoceros and as their horses panic. These plates were justly celebrated for their exciting drama and dynamism. A small sampling of other scenes: South American peons capturing bulls, then horses; Russians fishing in winter; Mamalukes wielding the sabre; sailors shooting wild deer; elephants in a pitfall; a Hindu elephant trap; shooting a leopard; wild boar shooting in Germany; hunting antelopes with a panther; taking vipers; seal catching in Greenland; and on and on. The New South Wales plates concern aborigines, and they show aborigines as warriors as well as hunting and fishing. Binding: contemporary diced Russia calf. Tooled in gilt. Edges marbled. Condition: rebacked, with original spine pasted on -- binding comes off as original throughout. Heavy rubbing along edges. Still attractive full calf. Tissue guards are heavily foxed. SAY, Jean-Baptiste
1814 Jean Baptiste SAY Economics Finance Supply Demand French Politics Napoleon “One product is always ultimately bought with another, even when paid for in the first instance with money.” – Jean-Baptiste Say Jean Baptiste Say was a French economist at the turn of the 18th-century. He was an important figure in the development of competitive free trade in Europe. He is most well-known today for “Say’s Law” which is summed up as: • "Aggregate supply creates its own aggregate demand", • "Supply creates its own demand", • "Supply constitutes its own demand", • "If you build it, they will come", • "Inherent in supply is the wherewithal for its own consumption". Say’s ‘Treaty of Political Economy’ is often considered the most important work of economic literature in the first half of the 19th-century, next to ‘Wealth of Nations.’ This second edition is famous in that Napoleon suppressed any chance of a reprint of the original edition until 1814. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London. Quarto, [iii]-xxiv, 663pp, [1pp ads]. Marbled boards, contemporary half calf spine with gilt title and gilt bands. Lacking half title. Chipping and cracking of original spine, but reinforced at hinge. General wear to edges of boards. Light foxing to illustrations and maps, mostly clean interior pages. The original sheets were sent to London, where English publisher, Dr. Thomas Rees, reprinted the American edition for a British audience. The English edition omits the appendix and the "Life of Lewis." Rees notes that the appendix was omitted because it deals with United States Indian affairs, which are "altogether of a local nature." The English edition does include a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1806 about the voyage and excerpts of a letter written from Lewis to Jefferson in April, 1805. The map is a close copy of the American edition map. (Sabin 40829) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This trial of 145 days ended with his acquittal but cost him £70,000 and ruined him financially. The East India Company granted him a pension and he lived the rest of his life in Worcestershire.

William Wilcox Cooke
M. and J. Norvell, Nashville, Tennessee. 1814. 527 pp. Hardcover in original full leather covers with backstrip that has lost much of its top layer of leather; no spine label and two vertical cracks to backstrip, which is still firmly attached. Joints are cracked but binding is tight and firm. Leather covers are rubbed, worn at extremities, flaking. Pages are moderately to heavily foxed but text is readable throughout, all pages present. A few pages have tears or a missing or creased corner. . Book is a very early listing of approximately 120 cases tried from 1811 to 1814 in the new state of Tennessee, which achieved statehood in 1796, just 22 years before the publication of this book. Cases are arranged chronologically. For each case, the plaintiffs and defendants are identified, the case is described in some detail, and the verdict provided, citing the pertinent points of law. Most of the case involve land disputes, and many involved property in or near Nashville. Some of the other cases discussed involve court jurisdiction, equity, contracts, debts, admissable evidence, fraud, perjury, the status of the child of a slave woman, gambling, and probable cause. The book includes an index and the final page is a list of errata. The book was previously owned by a Wm. B. Allen, who served as Circuit Court Clerk in the 12th District Court of Tennessee. His bookplate is on the front pastedown. SCARCE early Tennessee imprint. Not Ex-Lib. Fouqué, Friedrich Baron de la Motte
J. E. Hitzig, Berlin, 1814. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

West Bloomfield, NY, 1814. [1] p. plus integral address leaf. 4to on a folded folio sheet. Old fold lines, minor soiling; near fine. In a green half morocco and cloth clamshell case. [1] p. plus integral address leaf. 4to on a folded folio sheet. A hasty note written by Major General Jacob Brown to New York politician Nathan Williams, requesting more arms and equipment for the siege of Fort Erie, currently underway. The Americans, led by Brown, captured Fort Erie on July 3, 1814. British forces, led by Lt. General Gordon Drummond, engaged the Americans at the bloody Battle of Lundy's Lane on July 25th, where Brown was wounded; the Americans retreated to Fort Erie, and Brown was sent off to convalesce. After repeated sorties and engagements, the American commander, General Gaines, was gravely wounded and Brig. General Eleazer Ripley - who thought the whole operation was doomed to failure - took command. Brown, though not quite recovered from wounds taken at the battle of Lundy's Lane the previous month, was sent to replace the pessimistic Ripley as the commander of the Fort. Brown had made a name for himself at the battles of Sackett's Harbor and Lundy's Lane, and his actions at the Siege would cement his position as a national hero, winning him the Congressional Gold Medal in November 1814. Brown jotted this note before setting out to command the troops at the Fort. He writes: "My dear Sir I am so far on my way towards Buffalo. The militia turn out better than was expected. We shall I fear be deficient in arms. You will jump into your easy carriage and ride t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eyre for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. See pictures. Fore-edge painting faded. A little edge wear, shelf wear, and scuffs to boards and spine, but minor and the binding is handsome. "Fore-edge painting" on blank front endpaper. Rear blank endpaper has memorable verse numbers written on it in graphite. Table of contents has "Pentateuch" written in graphite, referring to the first five books. No annotations in text. Occasional dog-eared page. Conditioning of leather, in past, has caused a ghosting of the turn-ins onto the endpapers. A very attractive, tiny, 1814 edition, Holy Bible decorated with a fore-edge painting. Just a lovely Bible, I'm not really sure how else to describe it; perhaps... rich and sumptuous binding and edge decoration. Note, "miniature" is sometimes used as a technical term, meaning less than 3"; this book is slightly larger than that, at 4.75" tall. Physical Attributes - Measures 12 x 7 x 4 cm, with signatures of twelve, but the 1873 Catalogue of the Percival Library lists this edition as 24mo, which makes sense. Straight grain Morocco leather. Boards bordered with gilt fillets, inner roll of vines and leaves with corner florets. Three raised bands to spine, top and bottom compartment richly tooled; the other two compartments have "Holy Bible" and "London 1814" in gilt. All edges gilt. Faded fore-edge painting depicting (probably) a punt (boat) on a river, near a grain mill or water lock. Pages unnumbered, but the complete Old and New Testament, with a title page for both books. Metamorphosis Or A Transformation Of Pictures Published In 1814 by Samual Wood in Philadelphia . It's very scarce. I couldn't find any available anyplace. One recently sold on EBay for $1100 in a lesser condition. This book / pamphlet is quite fragile. There is some deterioration and discoloration. Some fraying too, but it is intact without any aids such as tape , canvas , extraneous paper or sewn folds. Only one spot , a date , of writing. In 2005 in an edition of Antiques Roadshow a similar item was appraised for $ 3000 - 4000. They currently suggest a value of 6-800. Look up the one in the Library Of Congress. It has added colorful paper to hold it together along with a sewn edge. It has multiple areas of handwriting, very beautiful, but detracts from its overall condition , in my opinion. In the long run it is your opinion, the prospective buyers , that really matters. Please feel comfortable asking questions and I will respond in a timely fashion. P. Didot l'aîné, 1814. 2 volumes in-8 (212 x 129 mm), XV pp., 388 pp. ; 2 ff. n. ch., 370 pp., 1 f. n. ch.
