1814. Dies ist ein Original, keine Reproduktion / This is an original, not a reproduction. John Thomson. "Southern Provinces of the United States." Original Kupferstich / Original Copper Engraving From A New General Atlas. Edinburgh: J. Thomson, 1817. Engraving by Hewitt. Inset view of "Characteristic Scenery of the Hudson River." In the early nineteenth century, the British cartographic publishers were producing the finest maps in the world. John Thomson, working in Edinburgh, was one of the leading British cartographers and his maps are good evidence of the quality of work issued in Great Britain at the time. This striking map of the southeastern U.S. is an particularly good example of his work. It was issued at an interesting period in the history of the American southeast. The state of Georgia is of particular note, for its borders are shown as they were in 1798 just before the Mississippi Territory was established, extending from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. It is not unusual for a British map maker to be late in reflecting internal American information on his maps, but the nearly twenty year lapse here makes one wonder whether Thomson was in fact a Georgian chauvinist. While somewhat anachronistic, the information of settlements, rivers, mountains, and ethnological details is fascinating. Overall, a fine map of the American southeast Größe / Size: Blattgrösse / Size of paper: 54 x 68 cm Grösse der Ansicht/ Size of image: 51 x 60 cm Zustand / Condition: Tadellos - siehe Bilder Excellent - please see images. They are essentially works written by Fallén and defended by students (much the same as Linnaeus' and Thunberg's dissertations). Authorship of new taxa found in these works is attributed to Fallén alone. The entire series was subsequently bound as a separate edition in 2 volumes." Mortier & Visscher
Mortier & Visscher, Amsterdam, 1814. Plan de la grande et fameuse ville marchande d'Amsterdam. (Large folding canvas-backed map and city plan of Amsterdam) Issued 1715-1814 (this last state), Mortier, Elizabeth (widow of N.) / Visscher Splendid example of a large format linen backed city plan of Amsterdam. Richly printed as issued, a superior clean fresh example. With the original green publishers cardboard slipcase which fits snugly. All separately issued linen-backed wall maps of this era are fairly rare survivals, more-so found so nice as this example. Dissected into 24 panels, printed and mounted by publisher, original hand lettered title to box. Map measures c. 38 1/4" W" x 22 1/4" H . Folio. Slip case measures 7 3/4" H x 5 1/8" W. Hameleers, Kaarten van Amsterdam 1538-1865, 104, 6th (and final) state. The extensive documentation of each state allows for absolutely certain dating, which is confirmed by being the only state which lacks a title cartouche at bottom center. Cement Molen so named along Nieuwe Vaart. D'Ailly, Calalogus van Amsterdamsche Plattegronden, 313 (placing it chronologically in at c.1779-80 and noting the key at right goes to #299, which is "N. Z. Huis zittenhuis"). This is quite interesting when compared to the definitive state found above. A picture is worth a thousand words. The images are a major part of the item description. Pursh, Frederick
London, 1814. Two volumes. xxxvi,358; [2],[359]-751pp., plus twenty-four stipple-engraved plates, with [6]pp. of advertisements, not found in all copies. Contemporary speckled sheep, neatly rebacked with original gilt spines laid down, leather labels. Corners bumped. Later pencil ownership inscriptions on front endpapers of first volume and both titlepages. Light offsetting from plates. Light tanning and scattered foxing. Good plus. In a red cloth clamshell box. A landmark work in early American botany, the first to publish the findings of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and a book which has been called by one botanical historian "amazingly brilliant." Born in Saxony, Pursh came to America in 1799. Aided by Benjamin Smith Barton, he made two memorable journeys of botanical exploration in 1806 and 1807. On his return from the second journey in 1807 he took over the running of David Hosack's Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. He remained in the United States until 1811, when he sailed for England in an attempt to arrange for the publication of the present work. In 1806, Pursh met Meriwether Lewis, who gave him a collection of dried plants gathered on the expedition, "in order to describe and figure those I thought new, for the purpose of inserting them in his travels, which he was then engaging for the press." It is unclear why Lewis would choose Pursh to turn the specimens over to. He may have intended that they go to Barton, for whom Pursh then worked. In any case, the death of Lewis and the delay in publication of the account of the expedition led Pursh to incorpora … [Click Below for Full Description]

In any case, the death of Lewis and the delay in publication of the account of the expedition led Pursh to incorpora … [Click Below for Full Description]

cerrtifying that John DOUGLAS (died 1814, Officer of the Royal Marines)"Esquire Colonel of Marines disembarked on the 27th day of November 1799 with a party of Marines under His Command by my Orders from his Majesty's Ship Tigre under my Command and served with the Turkish Army on Shore at Jaffa and also at the siege and capture of the fort of El Arish. Given under my hand on Board His Majesty's ship Tigre at anchor off Barrutta this eleventh day of January", signed as "Captain of H.M. Ship Tigre and Senior Officer Commanding His M. Ships in the Levant Seas", 1 side 4to., 11th January Sir Sidney had a remarkable career, his exploits including firing the French ammunition stores at Toulon, (1793), escaping from Paris in 1798 after two years as prisoner of war in the Temple, by means of forged documents, and the great defence of St. John of Acre against Napoleon in 1799. John Douglas and his wife Charlotte, Lady Douglas, were involved in a scandal regarding an allegedly illegitimate child born to the Princess of Wales, Caroline of Brunswick. He died at Maze Hill on 4 March 1814. According to The Gentleman's Magazine, "his death was occasioned by a complaint (from which he was never since been free) contracted whilst serving with the Turkish Army in the Deserts of El Arish arising from the quantity of sand in the water which the army was constrained to use, in consequence of the Enemy having possession of the wells". He was mentioned in Dispatches by Smith for his actions at Acre.

Eyre for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. See pictures. Fore-edge painting faded. A little edge wear, shelf wear, and scuffs to boards and spine, but minor and the binding is handsome. "Fore-edge painting" on blank front endpaper. Rear blank endpaper has memorable verse numbers written on it in graphite. Table of contents has "Pentateuch" written in graphite, referring to the first five books. No annotations in text. Occasional dog-eared page. Conditioning of leather, in past, has caused a ghosting of the turn-ins onto the endpapers. A very attractive, tiny, 1814 edition, Holy Bible decorated with a fore-edge painting. Just a lovely Bible, I'm not really sure how else to describe it; perhaps... rich and sumptuous binding and edge decoration. Note, "miniature" is sometimes used as a technical term, meaning less than 3"; this book is slightly larger than that, at 4.75" tall. Physical Attributes - Measures 12 x 7 x 4 cm, with signatures of twelve, but the 1873 Catalogue of the Percival Library lists this edition as 24mo, which makes sense. Straight grain Morocco leather. Boards bordered with gilt fillets, inner roll of vines and leaves with corner florets. Three raised bands to spine, top and bottom compartment richly tooled; the other two compartments have "Holy Bible" and "London 1814" in gilt. All edges gilt. Faded fore-edge painting depicting (probably) a punt (boat) on a river, near a grain mill or water lock. Pages unnumbered, but the complete Old and New Testament, with a title page for both books. Condition - See pictures. Fore-edge painting faded. A little edg … [Click Below for Full Description]

Payment | Shipping Walter Scott WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE 1st Scottish 1814 very rare WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE published anonymously by Walter Scott. Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne & Co. for Archibald Constable & Co, 1814. "Second Edition," stated on title page. Published anonymously in 1814, only one week after the first printing of 1000 copies sold out in two days, this second edition (what today we would call the second printing) still did not reveal the author's name. It was Scott's first venture into prose fiction and is widely accepted as the first historical novel. It has the first issue point: "our" for "your" in the first line of text of p.136 in Volume 2, although, again, this is the second printing, one week after the first printing. Still an incredibly rare survival. Three volumes; size of the bindings: 4 1/4 inches x 7 1/8 in. Volume 1: 358 pp., final imprint leaf present. Volume 2: 370pp. final imprint leaf present. Volume 3: 371pp. imprint present at bottom of p. 371. The calf bindings appear to be contemporary; they would have been bound by the publisher or the bookseller, over the original boards, soon after publication, as was the style and custom of the period. Bound in quarter light brown calf over original gray marbleized boards, leather corner darts, spine in six compartments separated by gilt ruled double line bands, title and volume number in … [Click Below for Full Description]
