Taylor, John, of Caroline
Fredericksburg: Published by Green and Cady, 1814. viii,656pp. plus errata leaf. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt with leather label. Minor toning and foxing. Very good. The most important work of the Virginia patriot and political theorist, a book of such power that Beard said, "It deserves to rank among the two or three really historic contributions to political science which have been produced in the United States." Taylor urges control over the powers of the executive and claims that the greatest danger to American democracy lies in a monopoly of power built on "paper and patronage." An important work, seldom met with. HOWES T63. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 32910.

Earl of Mountmorris, resulted in him being appointed secretary and draughtsman on Viscount Valentia's voyage to India and the Red Sea. It was on this voyage that Salt first visited the highlands of Ethiopia including the ancient city of Aksum. Salt returned to Ethiopia in 1809-10 on the first official mission from Great Britain to establish diplomatic links with the ancient Coptic kingdom. The aim was to conclude an alliance with the Tigran warlord Ras Wolde Selassie, but due to unrest Salt was unable to meet the king and instead stayed with his friend the Ras of Tigre. Another ambition was to secure a port on the Red Sea should France secure Egypt by dividing the Turkish Empire with Russia. During his time in Abyssinia, Salt conducted an extensive survey of Ethiopic and Greek inscriptions … [Click Below for Full Description]

James WATHEN
London: J. Nichols etc, 1814. Condition: Good +. Quarto, xx, 246pp., illustrated with 24 hand-colored aquatints. In period (or perhaps a little later) 3/4 brown polished calf and marbled boards with red-orange endpapers. Some dampstaining to front board, with chips and nicks to the extremities of the boards. Possible water damage to part of the spine, and the front outer joint is partially cracked, though the board is holding strong. One plate (opposite page 67, depicting the Pagoda), was poorly trimmed by the printer, with the bottom part of the plate title cut off, and the plate appearing slightly canted on the leaf (the illustration itself is entirely present). Some scattered foxing to a few leaves, but generally an unfoxed example, with only some mild, normal age-toning to the single leaves opposite a few of the plates). Some dampstaining to parts of the text and some of the plates, most obviously in about the last sixth of the book. This could be significantly improved by a professional conservator, if desired. There is no half-title (we are unsure if this is as issued or not). Overall, an unsophisticated and unrestored complete copy of this notable travel account, overall a good or better copy. God
London: Eyre for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814. See pictures. Fore-edge painting faded. A little edge wear, shelf wear, and scuffs to boards and spine, but minor and the binding is handsome. "Fore-edge painting" on blank front endpaper. Rear blank endpaper has memorable verse numbers written on it in graphite. Table of contents has "Pentateuch" written in graphite, referring to the first five books. No annotations in text. Occasional dog-eared page. Conditioning of leather, in past, has caused a ghosting of the turn-ins onto the endpapers. A very attractive, tiny, 1814 edition, Holy Bible decorated with a fore-edge painting. Just a lovely Bible, I'm not really sure how else to describe it; perhaps... rich and sumptuous binding and edge decoration. Note, "miniature" is sometimes used as a technical term, meaning less than 3"; this book is slightly larger than that, at 4.75" tall. Physical Attributes - Measures 12 x 7 x 4 cm, with signatures of twelve, but the 1873 Catalogue of the Percival Library lists this edition as 24mo, which makes sense. Straight grain Morocco leather. Boards bordered with gilt fillets, inner roll of vines and leaves with corner florets. Three raised bands to spine, top and bottom compartment richly tooled; the other two compartments have "Holy Bible" and "London 1814" in gilt. All edges gilt. Faded fore-edge painting depicting (probably) a punt (boat) on a river, near a grain mill or water lock. Pages unnumbered, but the complete Old and New Testament, with a title page for both books. Condition - See pictures. Fore-edge painting faded … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Wilcox Cooke
M. and J. Norvell, Nashville, Tennessee. 1814. 527 pp. Hardcover, rebound in cloth buckram. Pages are moderately to heavily foxed but text is readable throughout, all pages present. This copy has been rounded on the corners when it was trimmed, though I have no idea why. This leads to a loss of text along the page edges, mostly marginalia notes. Book is a very early listing of approximately 120 cases tried from 1811 to 1814 in the new state of Tennessee, which achieved statehood in 1796, just 22 years before the publication of this book. Cases are arranged chronologically. For each case, the plaintiffs and defendants are identified, the case is described in some detail, and the verdict provided, citing the pertinent points of law. Most of the case involve land disputes, and many involved property in or near Nashville. Some of the other cases discussed involve court jurisdiction, equity, contracts, debts, admissable evidence, fraud, perjury, the status of the child of a slave woman, gambling, and probable cause. The book includes an index and the final page is a list of errata. SCARCE early Tennessee imprint. Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. [Attributes: First Edition]

In 1809, Henry Salt traveled through the Horn of Africa on a diplomatic trip to Abyssinia. Included with the book are the original paper covered boards, which were returned by the binder. Some foxing to the plates. Long closed tear on pages 405/406, with an old repair using paper patches, now toned, not affecting the text. With deckled edges. The full-page illustrations were made by Charles Heath from original sketches by Salt, who had studied to be an artist before his career as diplomat. Meriwether Lewis / Paul Allen
New York: Bradford and Inskeep, 1814. Condition: Very Good binding. First Edition. A clean copy of Volume I only. Sabin notes that this is the best edition of this valuable work, which "exhibits not only some valuable geographical notices, but very copious and amazing details, respecting the manners, habits, and diversion of the North American tribes" (Sabin 40828). Mr. Allen has used his own name as the editor of this edition, when, in fact, the work was done primarily by Mr. Nicholas Biddle from the material left by Captain Lewis after his supposed suicide. One of only 1,417 copies. "According to Coues, who says in the bibliographical introduction of his edition of 1893, 'The map is gone from many if not most of the copies of the book now extant. . . [It] was not inserted in all copies of the original edition'" (Streeter 1777). Contain both black and white map plates, but not the elusive fold-out map frontispiece. Rebacked preserving most of the original spine and the morocco label. Page 9/10 is loose, but still attached near the bottom edge. Previous owner's blindstamp on the title page, effecting the publication information. (Sabin, 40828. Streeter, 1777. Howes, L-317. Church, 1309. BURNEY, Frances.
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814. 5 volumes, duodecimo (191 x 114 mm). Uncut in original boards, paper labels to spines. Labels worn, light splitting to a couple of joints, a few marks to covers and contents, but overall an excellent set. First edition of Frances Burney's final novel, very scarce thus in original boards. Camilla, published in 1796, had met with great success and the publishers were hopeful that Burney's present work would be equally well-received. With the entire first edition subscribed for by booksellers, a second edition was printed in anticipation, but the novel was met with unsympathetic critical reviews, and most of the latter edition was pulped. The novel, featuring an initially unnamed heroine fleeing the horrors of the French Revolution, was not reprinted until 1988, at which point its publication led to a flurry of critical feminist analysis. The work's "ideological tensions, which make it so powerful today, deftly weave together fiction and non-fiction, biography and art, in order to comment most eloquently on the place of the female body under patriarchy" (Kowaleski-Wallace, p. 40). Beth Kowaleski-Wallace, "Father Knows Best? A Review of Frances Burney: The Life in the Works by Margaret Anne Doody", in The Women's Review of Books, 6:10 (1989); Rothschild 552. Eyre for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. Fore-edge painting faded. A little edg … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kanten und Ecken bestossen. Stadtansicht etw. stockfleckig. Sonst guter Zustand. Ortsbeschreibungen. Sprache: deutsch. 1814. Dies ist ein Original, keine Reproduktion / This is an original, not a reproduction. John Thomson. "Southern Provinces of the United States." Original Kupferstich / Original Copper Engraving From A New General Atlas. Edinburgh: J. Thomson, 1817. Engraving by Hewitt. Inset view of "Characteristic Scenery of the Hudson River." In the early nineteenth century, the British cartographic publishers were producing the finest maps in the world. John Thomson, working in Edinburgh, was one of the leading British cartographers and his maps are good evidence of the quality of work issued in Great Britain at the time. This striking map of the southeastern U.S. is an particularly good example of his work. It was issued at an interesting period in the history of the American southeast. The state of Georgia is of particular note, for its borders are shown as they were in 1798 just before the Mississippi Territory was established, extending from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. It is not unusual for a British map maker to be late in reflecting internal American information on his maps, but the nearly twenty year lapse here makes one wonder whether Thomson was in fact a Georgian chauvinist. While somewhat anachronistic, the information of settlements, rivers, mountains, and ethnological details is fascinating. Overall, a fine map of the American southeast Größe / Size: Blattgrösse / Size of paper: 54 x 68 cm Grösse der Ansicht/ Size of image: 51 x 60 cm Zustand / Condition: Tadellos - siehe Bilder Excellent - please see images. (Large folding canvas-backed map and city plan of Amsterdam) Issued 1715-1814 (this last state), Mortier, Elizabeth (widow of N.) / Visscher Splendid example of a large format linen backed city plan of Amsterdam. Richly printed as issued, a superior clean fresh example. With the original green publishers cardboard slipcase which fits snugly. All separately issued linen-backed wall maps of this era are fairly rare survivals, more-so found so nice as this example. Dissected into 24 panels, printed and mounted by publisher, original hand lettered title to box. Map measures c. 38 1/4" W" x 22 1/4" H . Folio. Slip case measures 7 3/4" H x 5 1/8" W. Hameleers, Kaarten van Amsterdam 1538-1865, 104, 6th (and final) state. The extensive documentation of each state allows for absolutely certain dating, which is confirmed by being the only state which lacks a title cartouche at bottom center. Cement Molen so named along Nieuwe Vaart. D'Ailly, Calalogus van Amsterdamsche Plattegronden, 313 (placing it chronologically in at c.1779-80 and noting the key at right goes to #299, which is "N. Z.
