Meriwether Lewis / Paul Allen
New York: Bradford and Inskeep, 1814. Condition: Very Good binding. First Edition. A clean copy of Volume I only. Sabin notes that this is the best edition of this valuable work, which "exhibits not only some valuable geographical notices, but very copious and amazing details, respecting the manners, habits, and diversion of the North American tribes" (Sabin 40828). Mr. Allen has used his own name as the editor of this edition, when, in fact, the work was done primarily by Mr. Nicholas Biddle from the material left by Captain Lewis after his supposed suicide. One of only 1,417 copies. "According to Coues, who says in the bibliographical introduction of his edition of 1893, 'The map is gone from many if not most of the copies of the book now extant. . . [It] was not inserted in all copies of the original edition'" (Streeter 1777). Contain both black and white map plates, but not the elusive fold-out map frontispiece. Rebacked preserving most of the original spine and the morocco label. Page 9/10 is loose, but still attached near the bottom edge. Previous owner's blindstamp on the title page, effecting the publication information. (Sabin, 40828. Streeter, 1777. Howes, L-317. Church, 1309. Grolier Club, One Hundred American Books Before 1900; 30. Graff, 2478.). [Attributes: First Edition]

God
London: Eyre for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814. See pictures. Fore-edge painting faded. A little edge wear, shelf wear, and scuffs to boards and spine, but minor and the binding is handsome. "Fore-edge painting" on blank front endpaper. Rear blank endpaper has memorable verse numbers written on it in graphite. Table of contents has "Pentateuch" written in graphite, referring to the first five books. No annotations in text. Occasional dog-eared page. Conditioning of leather, in past, has caused a ghosting of the turn-ins onto the endpapers. A very attractive, tiny, 1814 edition, Holy Bible decorated with a fore-edge painting. Just a lovely Bible, I'm not really sure how else to describe it; perhaps... rich and sumptuous binding and edge decoration. Note, "miniature" is sometimes used as a technical term, meaning less than 3"; this book is slightly larger than that, at 4.75" tall. Physical Attributes - Measures 12 x 7 x 4 cm, with signatures of twelve, but the 1873 Catalogue of the Percival Library lists this edition as 24mo, which makes sense. Straight grain Morocco leather. Boards bordered with gilt fillets, inner roll of vines and leaves with corner florets. Three raised bands to spine, top and bottom compartment richly tooled; the other two compartments have "Holy Bible" and "London 1814" in gilt. All edges gilt. Faded fore-edge painting depicting (probably) a punt (boat) on a river, near a grain mill or water lock. Pages unnumbered, but the complete Old and New Testament, with a title page for both books. Condition - See pictures. Fore-edge painting faded … [Click Below for Full Description]

London J. Harris Nov. 20. FIRST EDITION 1814, 12mo, 130 x 107 mm, 5 x 4¼ inches, original drab thin card wraps, printed paper label on upper cover: "Harris's Cabinet " at top, "One Shilling Coloured" below with space between for handwritten title, the original ink had faded and a later owner has re-written the title over it, engraved title page and 14 of 15 engraved numbered leaves, each printed 1 side only, LACKING IS THE FINAL LEAF 15 AND THE LOWER COVER. The final leaf has been supplied in coloured facsimile and the lower cover neatly replaced at some time by a pink cover of the same period and weight. Each leaf has a large very nicely hand coloured copper engraving with an 8 line verse below telling the story. Jerry and Kitty court, get married and have a baby, then they tire of each other and decide to go travelling. Leaf 15 shows them on a boat and Jerry pushing his wife overboard to drown. This was probably considered not quite suitable for children by some parents, who thoughtfully removed and destroyed the leaf, although no doubt most children would have enjoyed the grim ending to the tale. Spine missing, label lightly browned, early name and date on upper cover, some early writing on inside of cover and blank side of title page (title is on verso of first leaf), last line of verse on page 4 is trimmed off, contents clean and bright. A defective copy of an uncommon pretty hand coloured juvenile book (1 leaf in facsimile, lower cover replaced as noted). Moon No. 169; Osborne Volume I, page 58. Walter Scott
Edinburgh: James Ballantyne & Co, 1814. Clean and tight with no previous owner's markings, in original bindings. A remarkably survival. See item description for full condition report. Payment | Shipping Walter Scott WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE 1st Scottish 1814 very rare WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE published anonymously by Walter Scott. Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne & Co. for Archibald Constable & Co, 1814. "Second Edition," stated on title page. Published anonymously in 1814, only one week after the first printing of 1000 copies sold out in two days, this second edition (what today we would call the second printing) still did not reveal the author's name. It was Scott's first venture into prose fiction and is widely accepted as the first historical novel. It has the first issue point: "our" for "your" in the first line of text of p.136 in Volume 2, although, again, this is the second printing, one week after the first printing. Still an incredibly rare survival. Three volumes; size of the bindings: 4 1/4 inches x 7 1/8 in. Volume 1: 358 pp., final imprint leaf present. Volume 2: 370pp. final imprint leaf present. Volume 3: 371pp. imprint present at bottom of p. 371. The calf bindings appear to be contemporary; they would have been bound by the publisher or the bookseller, over the original boards, soon after publication, as was the style and custom of the period. Bound in quarter light brown calf over original gray marbleized boards, leather corner darts, spine in six compartments separated by gilt ruled double line bands, title and volume number in … [Click Below for Full Description]

France Spring 1814 (n.d). Plate: 240 x 300mm; Sheet: 250 x 337mm; Hand-coloured etching The title is a paraphrase of Racine's Britannicus (Act V, scene 6), in which the words are directed by Agrippina to Nero, and relate to the murder of his adoptive brother, Britannicus. Another ancient element in this print is Chronos holding scales, on which the crimes of Robespierre are balanced against Napoleon's, which outweigh even the revolutionary terror. PERING, Richard
Plymouth-Dock: printed and published by Congdon and Hearle, 1814. 8vo., (4) + 62pp., inscribed in ink at head of title 'J.D. Thomson* from the author>', the inscription slightly cropped, however, recently well bound in boards, with printed labels. A fine copy. First edition. The author applauds the workmanship of shipbuilders in the Royal Dockyards but warns of the dangers of dry-rot and rotten tree-nails. Pering was an acknowledged authority on the materials of warship construction and maintenance, and particularly on rot and decay. The present pamphlet was his reply to Reports and papers on the impolicy of employing Indian-built ships in the trade of the East-India Company, and of admitting them to British registry in the Quarterly Review >of October 1813. * Almost certainly John Deas Thomson (1763-1838), Accountant-General to the Royal Navy.
