BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van 1770-1827
Wien: Artaria und Comp, 1814. Frimmel: Beethoven im zeitgenössischen Bilnis 11. Bory p. 164. Munich 1977 exhibition catalogue 116.Letronne, active in Vienna from 1805 to 1817, made his drawing of Beethoven from life in ca. 1813. Beethoven had achieved considerable notoriety by this time time, and the publisher Artaria commissioned Höfel to execute a portrait engraving based on Letronne's work. Höfel was not satisfied that Letronne's drawing adequately captured the composer and requested that Beethoven also sit for him. There are distinct differences between the two artists' renditions, and which of the two best captures the composer's likeness remains in debate. Beethoven's biographer Schindler thought the engraving to be the truest image; it is certainly considered one of the best likenesses of Beethoven known. See Comini: The Changing Image of Beethoven: A Study in Mythmaking, pp. 24-26.. Image size 268 x 210 mm. + wide margins, overall size 375 x 293 mm. Framed and glazed. Very slightly worn and creased. In very good condition overall.

CUISIN (J. P. R.)
Paris, Pigoreau, 1814, in 12, de 2 ff. Sermons On Various Occasions And Most of Them on the Principal Subjects Of Genuine Christianity By Joseph Benson, A. M. New York: Published by D. Hitt and T. Ware for the Methodist Connexion in the United States. Paul and Thomas, Printers 1814. The following discourses, delivered on different occasions, and written after their delivery, with such alterations and enlargements as were requisite, and published at the request of many who heard them, have all been for some years before the public. Some of them, as those on the Second Coming of Christ and the Future Misery of the Wicked, and on Sanctification, have gone through sundry editions, and many thousands of them have been circulated to different parts of this kingdom, especially among the members of the Methodist societies and congregations. And if I may give credit to the information I have received, the divine blessing has attended the reading of them to many individuals, and most of those into whose hands they have fallen, have signified their approbation of them. They are therefore here collected into one volume, at the request of our last Conference, with a view to their preservation … [Click Below for Full Description]

First published in French and in English in 1802 as The Costumes of Turkey. Attributed to the French artist Octavien Dalvimart about whom little is known, in the Preface. It seems the text is by another, sometimes attributed to William Alexander, as one of the descriptions includes a comment made by Mons. Dalvimart. The English artist William Alexander (1767-1816) accompanied the Macartney Embassy to China in 1792 as draughtsman and in 1808 was appointed assis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Metamorphosis Or A Transformation Of Pictures Published In 1814 by Samual Wood in Philadelphia . It's very scarce. I couldn't find any available anyplace. One recently sold on EBay for $1100 in a lesser condition. This book / pamphlet is quite fragile. There is some deterioration and discoloration. Some fraying too, but it is intact without any aids such as tape , canvas , extraneous paper or sewn folds. Only one spot , a date , of writing. In 2005 in an edition of Antiques Roadshow a similar item was appraised for $ 3000 - 4000. They currently suggest a value of 6-800. Look up the one in the Library Of Congress. It has added colorful paper to hold it together along with a sewn edge. It has multiple areas of handwriting, very beautiful, but detracts from its overall condition , in my opinion. In the long run it is your opinion, the prospective buyers , that really matters. Please feel comfortable asking questions and I will respond in a timely fashion. Mesmer, Franz Anton und K(arl) Chr(istian) Wolfart:
Berlin Nikolai, 1814 bzw. 1815. [Click Below for Full Description]

Manuscript.
1814. Folio, unpaginated. About 150 pages of manuscript entries. This journal, kept by 3rd mate William Washburn, is quite typical of a certain kind of career in the whale fishery. Washburn, from a small town in New York state, was about 24 years old when he signed aboard the "Benjamin Rush," a 384 ton ship built in 1814. They departed Warren, RI, on September 6th, killed their first whale off the Azores Sept 22, headed for the Brazil Banks, rounded the Horn in January and put in at Paita in March. But there was trouble along the way. The 1st mate tried to commit suicide with laudanum stolen from the medicine chest. Captain Perez Swan asked Washburn for help. "I told the capt to give him something to vomit it up." a week later, off Rio de Janeiro, the mate and 2 other men tried to desert by swimming ashore, 2 1/2 miles distant. Washburn wrote, "I dont now wether they reached shore or not." At Paita the crew threatened mutiny because Captain Swan wouldn't grant them liberty. Then in June, cruising The Line, Washburn got into a fight with the 2nd mate. He told the Captain, "I thought it was best for us to seperate for I would not stay in the ship with him fore hee acted more like a hog than a man." (At this point 10 pages are torn from the journal.) When we next see Washburn he is onboard the bark "Virginia," which was at the end of a 4-year whaling voyage. After some interesting adventures - boat stove by whale, crewman falls overboard and drowns, as well as more pages torn out, the voyage ended August 5, 1851, with "Virginia" returning to New Bedford with 1589 sperm and 125 … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRESIDENTIAL - WAR OF 1812] MADISON, James
[Washington: 1814]. A significant appointment. Isaac McKeever (1791-1856) joined the Navy as a midshipman in 1809, ultimately attaining the rank of Commodore. He never retired, dying of natural causes while still in service, in 1856. McKeever's forty-seven year Naval career was highly distinguished, especially in the War of 1812. As a young lieutenant - and just five days after receiving this commission! - he valiantly commanded a gun-boat at the Battle of Lake Borgne (a losing effort in which the American forces were vastly out-manned; many, including McKeever, were taken prisoner). As late as 1852 McKeever was still in active service at sea, commanding the flagship U.S.S. Constitution during the Navy's peace-keeping mission to Brazil. At his death he was Commander of the Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia. Partially printed vellum document, 18" x 13-1/2." Accomplished in manuscript, dated December 9th, 1814. Signature of President James Madison at lower right; countersigned by B.W. [Benjamin Williams] Crowninshield as acting Secretary of the Navy (Crowninshield would not be officially appointed until January 1815); embossed seal affixed at lower third, center. Verso blank. The document appears to have been lifted from earlier backing, with paper residue to verso. Expected cockling to vellum, with faint damp-stains at margins; some ink portions faint, but Madison's signature clear and legible. Overall a well-preserved example.

Listing for an oil painting on artist's panel by Miner Kilbourne Kellogg (1814-1889) depicting Rufus Wilmot Griswold that dates back to sometime around 1850. Will add more information to the description from time to time but assuming if you've found it, you are well aware of Rufus Wilmot Griswold and his relationship with Edgar Allan Poe. Griswold was famous in his own right but being the defamer of Poe is what he is most well known for today. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg was a talented artist, having painted numerous American Presidents and persons of importance in our history. Among the more notable portraits that I like to compare this portrait with is his painting of General Winfield Scott, circa 1851, in the New York Historical Society. Signed in the lower right by Kellogg. Signature on the back appears to be in Griswold's hand. At times he referred to himself as "doctor" (as others did in correspondence) so it looks good to my eyes. Frame signed Griswold as well but haven't been able to determine if by his hand. PHOTOGRAPHS: The 2nd and 4th images show the painting with a dry surface. That is how it now looks and how it looked when I acquired it. Wet the surface with Kotton Klenser for the other photographs so you could the detail and how much nicer it will look with the finish rejuvenated. Removed the Kotton Klenser immediately afterwards to revert the surface it to its previous condition. CONDITION: Dry surface. Work displays no signs of restoration. Earlier posted the painting may have a later coat of varnish but consulted with a conservator who told me the greenish haz … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quatremere-De-Quincy, Antoine Chrysosthome.
Paris,: Chez Bure Frères, Libraires Du Roi Et De La Bibliothèque Du Roi, Firmin Didot, 1814. Folio, half-title, title, vi, [ii], xxv, [i], 458, hand-colored frontispiece and 31 numbered engraved or etched plates of which 17 are hand-colored; Original red paper boards, green label lettered in gilt, yellow edges, some light spotting to the margins of a number of leaves as usual (this book seems prone to foxing and this copy is less foxed than most). First edition, 'One of 160 copies printed’ according to Blackmer; Brunet notes 150 copies and 10 on special paper. This copy is the earliest state with the title dated 1814 - most copies are dated 1815 to allow a dedication to Louis XVIII. “Antoine ChrysosthÙme Quatremère de Quincy studied law and then sculpture, before travelling to Italy in 1776 and visiting Naples in the company of the artist Jacques Louis David. In 1780 he returned to Paris to study architecture. From 1816 to 1839 he served as permanent secretary to the AcadÈmie des Beaux-Arts. Quatremère de Quincy’s architectural work was confined to transforming the church of Sainte Geneviève into the Pantheon and to the creation of a pulpit for the church of Saint Germain des Prés. The present work is a critical discussion of the aesthetics and practical construction of statuary in classical Greece. 'It is a pioneering work, dealing for the first time with the chryselephantine idols of Pheidias, and reconstructing their physical form from the descriptions of Pausanias and others. The author was particularly interested in the use of colored paints, raw material … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Singer, Samuel Weller, ed.].
A. & G. Way, prs, 1814. First appearance of this cleverly marketed and in fact valuable Chiswick Press reprint of a humorous Elizabethan short story collection: Tales, and Quicke Answeres, Very Mery, and Pleasant to Rede from the edition printed by Berthelet around 1535. There were two subsequent volumes edited by Singer under the general title of "Shakspeare's Jest Book" and published in 1815 and 1816. The introduction here explains the text's Shakespearean connection and origin story, with canvassing also of the editor's scholarly processes and his decisions to offer his tale with original orthography, in its full "licentiousness," and with its original "moral reflections." A short glossary of Elizabethan words is provided. => This is one of six copies printed on blue paper of an edition of 250 copies. Provenance: Ca. 1930 bookplate of Henry Pennell Frank; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

POPE, C.
London?, 1814. Folio, 3 page poem, (4pp total), written in a sloping hand with one correction, then written on the first page some accounts, a separate bifolium. A seemingly unpublished poem of 15 four-line verses on the death of the Princess Charlotte in 1814 by an author about whom there appears to be no known information. We have searched for any known printed copy but although we have found a poem of similar title published in 1817 in The Monthly Repository of Theology and General Literature Vol. 12 (1817), this is not the same poem. The poem is signed at the end "C. Pope". The ledger entry on the fourth page gives a listing of goods being brought by the ship the "Lord Duncan" which are banned from being imported into Surat and is dated March 1814. The paper is watermarked "1814". This piece may well be a useful clue to identifying the author. First lines: "Oh for a "sacred muse" to sing/ A suffering nation's heartfelt grief." Last line: "The power which heaven and earth address". [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A fascinating collection of letters and other written ephemera which shed light on the illustrious career of General Sir Thomas Reynell, and provide battlefield accounts and strategic commentary from the 1st Sikh War. Sir Thomas Reynell, 6th Baronet, was the son of Lt. Thomas Reynell, who was serving in Canada with the 62nd Regiment of Foot when his youngest son was born. When the 62nd moved south as part of Burgoyne's campaign, Lt. Reynell's wife and 2 youngest sons accompanied him. They were present at Saratoga, where Lt. 1814. Dies ist ein Original, keine Reproduktion / This is an original, not a reproduction. John Thomson. "Southern Provinces of the United States." Original Kupferstich / Original Copper Engraving From A New General Atlas. Edinburgh: J. Thomson, 1817. Engraving by Hewitt. Inset view of "Characteristic Scenery of the Hudson River." In the early nineteenth century, the British cartographic publishers were producing the finest maps in the world. John Thomson, working in Edinburgh, was one of the leading British cartographers and his maps are good evidence of the quality of work issued in Great Britain at the time. This striking map of the southeastern U.S. is an particularly good example of his work. It was issued at an interesting period in the history of the American southeast. The state of Georgia is of particular note, for its borders are shown as they were in 1798 just before the Mississippi Territory was established, extending from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. It is not unusual for a British map maker to be late in reflecting internal American information on his maps, but the nearly twenty year lapse here makes one wonder whether Thomson was in fact a Georgian chauvinist. While somewhat anachronistic, the information of settlements, rivers, mountains, and ethnological details is fascinating. An interesting and historically significant letter written by Thomas Middleton on board the Warren Hastings on the eve of his departure to India to become the first bishop of Calcutta. His correspondent is Joshua Watson, a philanthropist in London with whom he was good friends. There is a hint of regret or trepidation as he leaves England and his friends behind to embark on what he undoubtedly knew would be a one-way ticket. "The many proofs of good opinion and esteem, which have been offered me at a moment somewhat trying to my feelings, have been among my chief supports... If I could have known all the sacrifices, which I should be required to make, my judgement might have faltered even more than it did in making the decision." Middleton remained bishop of Calcutta until July 1822, when he died of sunstroke.
