[Click Below for Full Description]

Breton de la Martinière
Paris, A. Nepveu, 1814. 12mo. 6 vols bound in 3. With 84 engraved plates, several folding. FIRST ORIGINAL EDITION. A superb work depicting costumes, crafts and landscapes in the Holy land and Egypt. This work ‘is one of many indications of the renewed interest in the Near East after the Napoleonic invasion of Egypt. In his preface Breton de la Martinière praises the achievement of the French in Egypt “où le nom français a laissé de si glorieux souvenirs”. The text, far superior to that in the English edition of Mayer’s Views, gives information about the customs, the religions and the antiquities of the area but also provides details about its more recent history and the French occupation.
SAY, J.B.
Paris, Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1814. 2 volumes. lxxviii, 438 pp.; (4), 483, (1) pp. 8vo. Contemporary half calf, spine with raised bands and gilt lettering, marbled boards, gilt stamped crown with gilt monogram "AC" in lower compartment of spines. Kress 6387; Goldsmiths 20891; Teilhac 376; Einaudi 5119; Carpenter XXXIII (6); Schumpeter pp. 492-3; Palgrave, iii, 357. Second edition, the first being suppressed by Napoleon, there could be no re-issue until 1814. Jean-Baptiste Say is primarily remembered for Say's Law: 'that supply creates its own demand'. The Traité went beyond Smith in developing what Say called 'one of the most important thruths of political economy' - that supply creates its own demand, the doctrine ultimately names Say's Law, one of the cornerstones of classical economics. Say also was an early proponent of the utility theory of value, and was therefore much at odds with his classical contemporaries, to whom labour was the source of value (New Palgrave, iv, p. 249). Say ranks with Sismondi and Cournot in originality concerning his contributions to economic theory and Schumpeter has called this work 'the most important of the links in the chain that leads from Cantillon and Turgot to Walras.'Say never resolved his differences with Ricardo as to whether value was based on labour or utility, but in attempt to clarify his position in 1822, Say spoke of 'the quantity of useful things' as being crucial. In his correspondance with Sismondi and Malthus, he came finally to reconcile Say's Law with their theories of aggregate disequilibrium. Say was a policy-orie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chatham, United Kingdom, 1814. Unbound. Good. Contemporary eight-page manuscript transcription (perhaps the speaker's original copy) of the speech, written on four leaves measuring 7.25" x 8.75". Toned with some edge wear and storage folds. Archival repair and reinforcement along some folds; missing a section of the last page that contains the final two sentences of the speech. A transcript will be included. During the War of 1812, thousands of impressed American sailors refused to fight on British warships and were imprisoned in floating prison hulks at Chatham, where they were subjected to "hard fare," "scoundrelism," and "shockingly cruel punishments," In 1813, the prisoners aboard one ship attempted to celebrate Independence Day by flying two American flags, and two men were shot by British guards who were attempting to confiscate the colors. On July 4th of the following year, mindful of the near riot that had previously occurred, the British allowed Americans aboard the prison ships Crown Prince and Nassau to celebrate by flying an American flag (only as high as the 'railings'), playing of Yankee Doodle with drums and pipes on the fo'c'sle, cheering, and toasting with British porter. There was also "much speechifying, especially on the Nassau." (For more information see A Journal of a Young Man . . . Late a Surgeon . . . Confined . . . at Chatham, in England. . . . by Amos G. There was also "much speechifying, especially on the Nassau." (For more information see A Journal of a Young Man . . . Late a Surgeon . . . Confined . . . at Chatham, in England. . . . by Amos G. Fernandez de San Salvador (1756–1842), was a writer and lawyer devotedly loyal to the Old Regime and the King of Spain, Ferdinand VII. The first of these two works, El Modelo de Los Cristianos presentado a los Insurgentes de América, warns its readers against revolutionaries, both those in support of Napoleon, and those in support of total independence from Europe. From 1808 to 1813 Spain, and therefore Mexico, had been under Napoleonic rule. Ferdinand VII was reinstated as King on 11 December 1813, however the power of the monarchy had been greatly diminished. [Hay, George]
Washington: Way, 1814. 90pp, stitched, scattered light spotting. Original rear plain wrapper present. Good+. The Virginian Hay was an ally of Jefferson, who appointed him U.S. Attorney for Virginia, in which capacity he prosecuted Aaron Burr for treason. John Quincy Adams later made him a district judge. "He was a confirmed Jeffersonian Republican and kept the pen of a ready writer always loaded with diatribes against the Federalists" [DAB]. He loathed what he calls "the British doctrine of perpetual allegiance, and the right of impressment, gratuitously inferred from that allegiance." He articulates-- with an examination of American, British, and international law-- the legal bases for "the opposition made by the United States to the British claim of impressment." The Treatise has also been attributed to Langdon Cheves; a previous owner of this copy has written Cheves's name on the title page. FIRST EDITION. Marvin 376. Cohen 2321. Marke 604. I Harv. "This edition comprises the author's larger work, 'Hidushe halakhot', plus a smaller last recension, 'Hidushe halakhot mahadure batra'" (OCLC), the latter by Moses ben Isaac mi-Lublin (d. 1668). - Anton Schmid had been one of Kurzböck's apprentices and as such had been sent to the Vienna Oriental Academy to learn Hebrew. Schmid later bought Kurzböck's Hebrew types from the printer's widow and succeeded his former master, soon to become Austria's foremost printer of Hebrew, and one of the most capable ones on the continent. Imprint in Yiddish: ?Vin, gedrukt bei Anton Schmid k. k. priv. deitsch- und hebreischem Buchdruker?. (TÖRNEBLAD, BENGT JOHAN)
Sthlm, Elméns & Granbergs boktryckeri, 1814. 8:o. 39 s. Tagen ur band.
