Payment | Shipping Walter Scott WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE 1st Scottish 1814 very rare WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE published anonymously by Walter Scott. Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne & Co. for Archibald Constable & Co, 1814. "Second Edition," stated on title page. Published anonymously in 1814, only one week after the first printing of 1000 copies sold out in two days, this second edition (what today we would call the second printing) still did not reveal the author's name. It was Scott's first venture into prose fiction and is widely accepted as the first historical novel. It has the first issue point: "our" for "your" in the first line of text of p.136 in Volume 2, although, again, this is the second printing, one week after the first printing. Still an incredibly rare survival. Three volumes; size of the bindings: 4 1/4 inches x 7 1/8 in. Volume 1: 358 pp., final imprint leaf present. Volume 2: 370pp. final imprint leaf present. Volume 3: 371pp. imprint present at bottom of p. 371. The calf bindings appear to be contemporary; they would have been bound by the publisher or the bookseller, over the original boards, soon after publication, as was the style and custom of the period. Bound in quarter light brown calf over original gray marbleized boards, leather corner darts, spine in six compartments separated by gilt ruled double line bands, title and volume number in second and fourth compartments against d … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Napoleon) Dupont de l'Etang, Pierre, Général
N.p. [Paris]: 13 April, 1814. 1 p., on letterhead of "Ministère de la Guerre". Folio. "... dans une circomstance ... mémorable". An extraordinary letter of historic significance, written a mere two days after the Treaty of Fontainebleau of April 11, 1814, which set the terms of Napoleon's abdication, and ended an era. Dupont had been one of Napoleon's most distinguished generals, but his surrender in the disastrous Spanish campaign led to disgrace and imprisonment. After the fall of Napoléon, Dupont became Minister of War for Louis XVIII, and, in just such letters as this to Marshal Victor -- one of Napoleon's most trusted generals -- negotiated the acquiescence of Napoléon's military leaders: [in translation] "Monsieur le Maréchal; -- The provisional government has read with intense interest the declaration in which your Excellency has announced his adherence to the act of the Senate pronouncing the abdication of Napoleon Buonaparte and the restoration of the Bourbons on the throne on their ancestors. By this declaration, taken in the interest of the country, your Excellency has established anew a claim to the gratitude of the French people as well as the respect and good will of His Majesty, Louis XVIII. Such is the opinion, sir, of the provisional government -- and I am more than happy to be its messenger on this memorable occasion". Some very slight waterstaining affecting a few letters, otherwise very good, handsomely mounted and framed.

Kupf.-Ansicht. Ortsbeschreibungen. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

1814. Dies ist ein Original, keine Reproduktion / This is an original, not a reproduction. John Thomson. "Southern Provinces of the United States." Original Kupferstich / Original Copper Engraving From A New General Atlas. Edinburgh: J. Thomson, 1817. Engraving by Hewitt. Inset view of "Characteristic Scenery of the Hudson River." In the early nineteenth century, the British cartographic publishers were producing the finest maps in the world. John Thomson, working in Edinburgh, was one of the leading British cartographers and his maps are good evidence of the quality of work issued in Great Britain at the time. This striking map of the southeastern U.S. is an particularly good example of his work. It was issued at an interesting period in the history of the American southeast. The state of Georgia is of particular note, for its borders are shown as they were in 1798 just before the Mississippi Territory was established, extending from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. It is not unusual for a British map maker to be late in reflecting internal American information on his maps, but the nearly twenty year lapse here makes one wonder whether Thomson was in fact a Georgian chauvinist. While somewhat anachronistic, the information of settlements, rivers, mountains, and ethnological details is fascinating. Overall, a fine map of the American southeast Größe / Size: Blattgrösse / Size of paper: 54 x 68 cm Grösse der Ansicht/ Size of image: 51 x 60 cm Zustand / Condition: Tadellos - siehe Bilder Excellent - please see images. London: Edward Orme. Printed by J. F. Dove, 1814, 1813. First edition. Full Calf. Very Good. 4to. 28 by 22 cm. Unpaginated. 110 hand-colored plates. 107 of these are aquatints, two are line engravings, and one, a stipple and line engraving. Second title page for the New South Wales section. Each plate accompanied by one to four pages of explanatory text -- most are one or two pages long, though. The plates and the stories they tell are immensely varied in both the geographic location of the scenes and the type of hunting depicted. Not only are all continents represented, but also, such activities as whalehunting are included. Animals are shown in their own hunts, and even pursuing humans as well. One such plate, for instance, shows men desperately climbing a tree to escape a rhinoceros and as their horses panic. These plates were justly celebrated for their exciting drama and dynamism. A small sampling of other scenes: South American peons capturing bulls, then horses; Russians fishing in winter; Mamalukes wielding the sabre; sailors shooting wild deer; elephants in a pitfall; a Hindu elephant trap; shooting a leopard; wild boar shooting in Germany; hunting antelopes with a panther; taking vipers; seal catching in Greenland; and on and on. The New South Wales plates concern aborigines, and they show aborigines as warriors as well as hunting and fishing. Binding: contemporary diced Russia calf. Tooled in gilt. Edges marbled. Contemporary green straight-grain morocco, spines lettered in gilt and richly gilt to compartments, covers panelled in blind and gilt enclosing gilt garlanded lyre, red endpapers, gilt edges, green silk page markers. Minor rubbing to spine and around extremities, covers of vol. II lightly bowed, foxing to plates and offsets to facing pages, very occasional faint foxing elsewhere, yet overall a lovely set, contents clean, joints and hinges intact. Extra-illustrated with 14 engraved plates. First editions of Hebrew Melodies (with the first appearance in print of "She Walks in Beauty"), Childe Harold's Pilgrimage Cantos II and IV, The Prisoner of Chillon, and Manfred, together in a highly attractive uniform contemporary binding along with early editions of Childe Harold Cantos I and II (tenth edition), The Giaour (fourteenth edition), The Bridge of Abydos (tenth edition), The Corsair (ninth edition), Lara (fifth edition), The Siege of Corinth and Parisina (third edition), Ode to Napoleon (twelfth edition), Poems on his Domestic Circumstances (twenty-second edition), Monody on the Death of Sheridan ("new edition"), Poems (second edition), The Lament of Tasso (sixth edition), and Beppo (sixth edition). Byron proved hugely profitable for his publisher John Murray: not only did he pour out poetry at a breathless pace, but the public's appetite meant that each of these poems went through many editions. Murray capitalized on this by publishing Byron's various poems in a uniform size, a form of bibliographic branding for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scarce, inscribed, first edition of Badía y Leblich oriental travelogue, the first European account of Mecca under the Wahhabi rule. Domingo Francisco Jorge Badía y Leblich (1767-1818) was the Spaniard traveler, soldier, and spy of the Spanish Crown. He is known as the third European to gain access to Mecca after Ludovico di Varthema and Joseph Pitts and the first to give an eye-witness account of the Wahhabis in Mecca. His journey to Arabia, started in 1803, was commissioned by Charles IV's Prime Minister, Manuel Godoy, as an agent of Spanish colonialism. Under the name of Ali Bey al-Abbasi, pretending to be a descendant of the Abbasid Caliphs of the West, he spent two years in Morocco, then traveled to Tripoli, Cyprus, and Egypt, visited Mecca, and on his way back he stopped in Jerusalem, prominent places in Syria and eventually in Constantinople. There, for the first time during his journey, he was suspected of not being a real Muslim and fled to French-occupied Spain in 1807. Inscribed to Pedro Badia, Badía y Leblich's son with a Latin quotation from Phaedrus "Nisi utile est quod facimus, stulta est gloria" (Unless what we do is useful, glory is … [Click Below for Full Description]
