        The Velvet Cushion

      T. Cadell and W. Davies, London 1814 - A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing bound in three-quarter leather and marbled boards (boards curved, rubbing to the each board's surface and rubbing to their respective edges, old white tape repair to the margin of one page, scattered foxing). Published anonymously, the book presents a memoir about the Church of England given by a vicarage cushion who begins its tale by stating: "The first place in which I remember to have seen the light was in the shop of an upholsterer in Fleet-street, in the days of bloody Queen Mary." Originally published anonymously, later editions name the author as J. W. Cunningham, A. M. Vicar of Harrow. John William Cunningham was and evangelical clergyman of the Church of England and, from 1850 to 1858 also served as the Editor of The Christian Observer. He served as Vicar of Harrow, the presentation to which his father-in-law purchased, from 1811 until his death in 1861, and was a member of the Clapham Sect of which two of the leading lights were William Wilberforce and Wilberforce's cousin, the important Banker and Parliamentarian, Henry Thornton. Presenting the evangelical point of view of the parties in the church of England since the English Reformation, The Velvet Cushion was quite well-received and went through ten editions in a mere two years. [Nevertheless, the book did not meet the approval of all and a response to this work was written by Rev. John Styles titled "A New Covering to the Velvet Cushion" (1815) wherein Rev. Styles gives his views on the Church presented through the same cushion with a new covering.] This rapid production of new editions of The Velvet Cushion evidences not only the book's popularity, but also indicates that not many copies of the first edition, first printing, were issued and, in our experience, the first edition, first printing is quite scarce. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing. QUITE SCARCE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A New Version of the Psalms of David, Fitted to the Tunes Used in Churches

London - Company of Stationers, 1814 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A finely bound edition of Tate and Brady's famous Psalms of David. Bound inleather with gilt lettering and border decoration. Included are several printedhymns, that are attached to the front free-endpaper with a pin. Tate's and Brady's New Version of the Psalms of David (1696). . . was smoother than the well-established old metrical version by Sternhold and Hopkins and so more satisfying to modern taste. . . Bishop William Beveridge complained in posthumously published critical observations (1710) that its wit and fancy were unscriptural, but Tate and Brady gradually displaced Sternhold and Hopkins and was widely used in Anglican churches until the mid-nineteenth century. It ran to over three hundred editions. Nahum Tate, 1652 1715, was an Irish poet, hymnist, and lyricist, who became England's poet laureate in 1692. Nicholas Brady, 1659 1726, was an Anglican divine and poet. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is mild wear to the extremities, including rubbing with slight loss to a small section on the front board. Internally the pages are bright with only very slight occasional browning, and the occasional spot, most prominent to the first and last few pages. Overall the condition is very good..

A scarce first edition of an English broadside lampooning Napoleon, his family, marshals, generals and officials

Broadside, MEMOIRS of BUONAPARTE, His Imperial Family, Great Officers of State, and Great Military Officers. (London: G. Smeeton, 17 St. Martin's Lane, Charing Cross, [c. 1814]) 10.75" x 14.5" (visible), featuring at top center, a hand colored "Hieroglyphic portrait" of Napoleon after Johann Michael voltz. Light creases and a few ink smudges, else fine. A scurrilous attack on Napoleon Bonaparte, most likely published in the last days of the campaign that led to his abdication in 1814. (The last date in the text is 1813.) The broadside is dominated at top center by an "hieroglyphic Portrait of Buonaparte" which has been described at the lower right: "The French Eagle, crouching, forms the chapeau en militaire, the Red Sea represents his throat, illustrative of his drowning armies: the visage, is formed of carcas[s]es of the unhappy victims to his cruel ambition: the hand is judiciously placed as the epaulet, drawing the Rhenish Confederacy, under the flimsy symbol of the cob-web, and the spider is a symbolic emblem of the vigilance of the Allies!" The balance of the broadside features short biography/character assassinations which would lead us to believe (among other things) that Napoleon's mother was a brothel keeper and at sixteen he poisoned a girl he had made pregnant. Scarce: We cannot source any examples of this first edition appearing at auction. Capper Album. BM Satires 12204. (See item 11224 for slightly later version with different letterpress.) We've encountered two other later editions of this broadside dating from 1814 and 1820, both of which appear to be equally scarce.

Bulmer and Co., 1814.SECOND EDITION 1814, small 4to, approximately 230 x 155 mm, 9 x 6 inches, 60 beautiful hand coloured engraved plates (including frontispiece), each facing a page of descriptive text, bound in full burgundy straight grained morocco, ornate gilt border to covers with inner blind border, gilt raised bands to spine, richly gilt in compartments, gilt title, gilt patterned board edges and inner dentells (turn ins), all edges gilt, yellow endpapers.         Vom Beruf unsrer Zeit für Gesetzgebung und Rechtswissenschaft.

Heidelberg, bey Mohr und Zimmer, 1814.. 8vo. 2 Bll., 162 S. Neuer Halbledereinband. (getilgter St.a.T., Papier an dieser Stelle etw. schwach)..

" and completed by an anonymous scrivener

[Reading, PA: C. F. Egelmann Folio (35 x 25.5 cm; 13.75" x 10.125") [1] p.. 1814 and later] The engraver Egelman (1782–1860) is credited by Stopp with producing => the first engraved Taufschein (birth/baptismal certificate), an example of which is offered here. The certificate is for Caroline Buchler, daughter of L.F. and Sara (Wagner) Buchler, born 8 August 1843 in Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The minister is simply identified as Oberfeld. The cataloguer at the Penn State University library describes its uncolored example: "The form is generally dated ca. 1830, but could have been in use as early as 1814. The lower design depicts Jesus with the disciples, while the upper scene shows Jesus' baptism. The form stretches between two pillars, flanked by columns of smoke, all within line border. Distinctive mix of [stipple] engraving and etching, probably on copper plate, by Egelmann." => The present copy is handsomely hand-colored and the blanks for names, dates, and places accomplished nicely in red ink in a clear hand. Excellent repair to a lower area into the image; other repairs to the margins. Bug spotting in lower outer corner.

Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manner of the Turks

London: John Murray, Albemarle Street; Printed By W. W. Bulmer and Co., 1814. First. Hardcover. Very Good. Book. v pp (preface), followed by 59, of 60 hand-colored plates called for. Missing Plate 1, "The Kislar Aga". Each plates accompanied by English description on separate leaf. Plates measure 10 by 6.5 inches (book is large octavo). Plates include Sultana or Odalisk, ladle-bearer, musician, first dragoman, the mufti, a Jew, a dervise, a Tartar, and on and on. They are both entertaining, both to gaze at and to read about, and they bring alive the past of a radically different world from the present in a way that no dry historical tome or even a diverting historical novel can do alone. The red half leather is a crude morocco and has some chipping, cracks and wear. Gilt title on spine is likewise only functional, and while bright, is not appealing. Leather is over marbled boards which have some wear but are acceptable. Binding is tight. Plates and text pages with some light soilage scattered but for the most part they can be described as just acceptably age toned. Preliiminary pages have a bit more foxing. Other than missing plate, a very good copy.

They are essentially works written by Fallén and defended by students (much the same as Linnaeus' and Thunberg's dissertations). Authorship of new taxa found in these works is attributed to Fallén alone. The entire series was subsequently bound as a separate edition in 2 volumes..."         [K620]. Clavier Auszug von Mozarts ZauberflÂœte fürs Clavier eingerichtet von Fridrich[!] Eunike Churfürstl: Cölnischen Hof-und Opern Sænger... Priz 18 Francs. Preis fl. 7 1/2. [Piano-vocal score]

Bonn: Gestochen und herausgegeben von N: Simmrock Churfürstl: Cölnischen Hof- und Kammer Musikus [PN] 4. [ca. 1814]. Oblong folio. Early teal blue marbled boards with oval cut paper label to upper with titling in manuscript. 1f. (title with elaborate oval vignette by I. G. Pflugfelder depicting two disconsolate muses over Mozart's grave), 1f. (cast list, table of contents, with footnote advertising full scores of Die Zauberflöte, Idomeneo, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail), 3- 145, [i] pp. Engraved. Text in German. Signature of former owner "Pauline Grasemann" in brown ink to free front endpaper with biographical annotations below in a different hand in blue-black ink; signature "Auerbach" in pencil to upper right corner of title. Boards quite worn, rubbed and bumped; rebacked in beige linen. Slight dampstaining to lower inner corner; lower outer corners soiled and occasionally slightly frayed; several upper outer corners creased; some small tears and stains. . A later issue of Simrock's 1793 edition, with numerous pages re-engraved. Köchel 6 p. 712. Hoboken 12, 558 (with older version of p. 120, lacking plate number). RISM M4780 (three copies in the U.S., not distinguishing among issues). The leaf between the title and first page of music, present in this issue, was not part of the 1793 edition. Its footnote, advertising full scores of Die Zauberflöte, Idomeneo, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail, allows for the dating of the present copy. Simrock published the first edition of the full score of Die Zauberflöte in 1814. Most plates used in this issue are from the 1793 printing of the work (with occasional corrections). These plates are characterized by the combination of an old-style, semicircular bass clef, an inclined violin (G) clef, and the long s in text underlay. Five pages (3, 7, 18, 19, 124) have been re-engraved using the old bass clef but a modern, upright violin clef; however, while page 124 dispenses with the long s, the other four pages retain it. Two more re-engraved pages (22 and 126) have a modern, spiral-shaped bass clef and a modern violin clef but still the long s; one more page (108) combines an inversed old-style bass clef with a modern violin clef and the short s. Finally, 22 pages (5, 6, 11, 20-21, 40-41, 56, 75, 86-87, 104-6, 112, 120, 125, 128, 130, 141, and 143-44) have the two modern clefs and also the short s, probably representing the most recent stage. In the course of these replacements, the text underlay of the 1793 edition, which follows Mozart's autograph, has been supplanted with that of the edition of the full score of 1814 in three numbers: Tamino's aria, "Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön" (now "So reizend hold, so zaubrisch schön"); the duet of Pamina and Papageno, "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" (now "Der Liebe holdes Glück empfinden"); and Sarastro's aria "In diesen heil'gen Hallen" (first line identical to both versions). It may be assumed that the respective pages, all representing the "most recent stage" described above, were engraved only after the full score had been issued. It has been argued that Simrock obtained a copy of this version of the libretto from Constanze Mozart and that it represents the original one ( Freyhan: The Authentic Magic Flute Libretto: Mozart's Autograph or the First Full-Score Edition?). The table of contents, however, presents the text incipits of the autograph only. A peculiar detail of the Simrock vocal score, present in the first issue, is the replacement of the famous high Fs in the aria of the Queen of the Night, "Der Hölle Rache," with Ds, causing awkward dissonances. It would seem that this was originally a transcription error, but it was never corrected. The arranger of this score, Friedrich Eunike (1764-1844), was a tenor who had performed the role of Tamino.

        Mangrove Tree

0 - This watercolor on paper is from a collection of watercolors and drawings that depicts the natural history (flora and fauna) of Guiana, dating to the early 19th century. The collection appears to pre-date the expeditions of Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk, a German-born explorer for Great Britain who executed geographical, ethnological and botanical studies in various parts of the world in the 1830s and 40s. He traveled to South America, the West Indies, the Dominican Republic and Thailand. Fragments of a manuscript text accompanied these unsigned works of art, suggesting an English author with Guyanese subject matter. Important to note, the colonies of Berbice and the United Colony of Demerara and Essquibo were ceded to Britain in 1814, and unified as British Guiana in 1831. 6.5 x 7.5 in
