Versand D: 4,00 EUR Romantiker

Lodoiska eine heroische Oper in III Ackten Vollständiger Clavier=Auszug von Müller No 2220 [Piano-vocal score]

Wien: S.A. Steiner [PN] C.D. 2220, 1814. Scarce. Weinmann, Senefelder-Steiner-Haslinger 1, 124. OCLC nos. 633228241, 746298094 (2 copies, both in Germany). RISM CC 2028 I,315 (5 copies, all in Austria and Germany). Lodoiska, to a libretto by Claude-François Filette-Loraux after Jean-Baptiste Louvet de Couvrai, was first performed at the Théâtre Feydeau in Paris on July 18, 1791. "The work was greeted with enthusiasm, although the libretto fell short of being a masterpiece. Everything pleased, from beautiful and effective music to sensational stage devices, and Lodoïska ran for 200 performances. It was so popular that it was revived at the Feydeau in 1819 and was performed frequently in the Germanic countries in the early 19th century, including a production in Vienna in 1805, while Cherubini was there, for which he provided additional music. Its success was assured by its flowing vocal lines, its novel orchestration and its romantic plot, which seized the imagination of the inhabitants of revolutionary Paris by setting the righteousness of heroism, liberty and fraternity against the evil of tyranny. With Lodoïska Cherubini turned his back on his training as an Italian composer of opera seria, choosing the freer form of opéra comique over the more stilted and confining tragédie lyrique and embarking on a course of development of opéra comique which was to lead to the eradication of almost all differences between the two genres except for the spoken dialogue... With Lodoïska Cherubini secured the admiration of the French populace and the esteem of his fellow musicians." Stephen C. Willis in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. Quarter dark red morocco with marbled boards, spine in compartments gilt, titling gilt. 1f. (series title "Répertoire der besten Opern in vollstaendigsten Clavier=Auszügen. Band. Wien. Im Kunst und Musik=Verlag des S.A. Steiner"), 1f. (title with fine engraved vignette depicting a scene from the opera), [i] (blank), 2-80, [i] (blank), 2-114 pp. Engraved. Text in German. Handstamp of the Conservatorium für Musik of Stuttgart to lower margin of series title, title, and p. 2. Binding very slightly worn, rubbed and bumped. Margins slightly soiled; minor dampstaining to series title, title, and outer portions of final signatures; occasional light foxing and staining; binder's holes to inner margins.

Meli is considered one of the most important Italian dialect poets. A first collection of his works in five volumes, not containing the Favole morali, had appeared in Palermo in 1787.This edition includes the Bucolica, the Lirica, the Poems, inspired by a sincere love for nature, the Fate Galanti, which is the narrative of a philosophical - allegorical journey made by author under the guidance of a fairy, the satirical heroic poem Don Chisciotti e Sancii Panza, clearly inspired by Cervantes' masterpiece, and finally the Poesie e favuli morali.Meli writes in the Sicilian dialect, but his Sicilian is a learned language, in which he transposes the manner and terms of literary Italian.Giovanni Meli was born in Palermo. After the first education received by the Jesuits, he studied medicine, graduating in 1764. For a time he practiced in Cinisi. Back in Palermo, in 1787 he obtained the chair of chemistry.

HISTORY OF THE EXPEDITION UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAINS LEWIS AND CLARK, TO THE SOURCES OF THE MISSOURI, THENCE ACROSS THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS AND DOWN THE RIVER COLUMBIA TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN. PERFORMED DURING THE YEARS 1804-5- 6.

Philadelphia: J. Maxwell for Bradford & Inskeep and Abm. H. Inskeep of New York, 1814. - Two volumes. xxviii,470pp. plus large folding map in facsimile, plus two single-page maps; ix,[1],522pp. plus three single-page maps. Expertly bound to style in full tree calf, covers gilt, spines gilt, black morocco labels. Very good. Provenance: Samuel Hegamin (signature dated 1814 on p.1 of each volume); Daniel L. Weckerly (signature dated 1838 on both titles). The first edition of the "definitive account of the most important exploration of the North American continent" (Wagner-Camp). A cornerstone of Western Americana. The book describes the Government-backed expedition to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase undertaken from 1804 to 1806 by ascending the Missouri to its source, crossing the Rocky Mountains, and reaching the Pacific Ocean. In total, the expedition covered some eight thousand miles in slightly more than twenty-eight months. Lewis and Clark brought back the first reliable information about much of the area they traversed, made contact with the Indian inhabitants as a prelude to the expansion of the fur trade, and advanced by a quantum leap the geographical knowledge of the continent. ^This official account of the expedition is as much a landmark in Americana as the trip itself. The narrative has been reprinted many times and remains a perennial American bestseller. The observations in the text make it an essential work of American natural history, ethnography and science. It is the first great U.S. government expedition, the first book on the Rocky Mountain West, and a host of other firsts. It is among the most famous American books. WAGNER-CAMP 13:1. Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the English

1814. first edition. With Fifty Hand Colored Aquatint PlatesDepicting a Huge Range of Social TypesALEXANDER, William. Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the English. Illustrated in fifty coloured engravings, with descriptions. London: Printed for John Murray? by W. Bulmer and Co., 1814. Small quarto (8 15/16 x 6 1/8 inches; 227 x 156 mm.). [iv], Fifty hand colored aquatint plates, each with an accompanying leaf of text. Plates watermarked "J. Whatman Turkey Mills ---9" which we would estimate to be 1819.Contemporary full maroon straight-grain morocco, covers elaborately bordered in gilt and blind, spine with four raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt boards edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt. A fine, albeit slightly later copy of this fascinating work. This extraordinary work covers a huge range of social types from 'The Sovereign' to a chimney sweep, a judge to the licensed man that watered and fed the horses pulling the hackney carriages. The images and related text on the lower classes in general and the street vendors in particular are probably the most interesting. They picture and describe people who do not appear in conventional histories of the period, and offer a window into real life on the streets at the beginning of the 19th century. Colas notes that the plates are engraved from earlier images by William Henry Pyne, presumably those published in his The Costume of Great Britain (London: 1804, 60 plates). Pyne's work was evidently a major source for this work, as a comparison of the titles to the plates shows, but there are also a significant number of military subjects that are not in Pyne's work, suggesting a variety of sources. The plates have been executed with a refreshing liveliness and freedom that is not usually seen in books of this type, but which is typical of William Alexander's etched and engraved work. This volume is part of a series, all of which were published uniformly in 1814 and include:Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the AustriansPicturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the ChinesePicturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the RussiansPicturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the TurksColas II, 2357; Lipperheide Gca 21; Tooley 374.

The Star Spangled Banner - FIRST NEW YORK EDITION

New York: Geib & Co. No. 23 Maiden , [n.d., late 1814 or early 1815]. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. 4to (12 ½ x 9 5/8 in.) printed from two engraved plates on pages [2] and 3 of a bifolium, removed from a bound volume of contemporary sheet music with pagination inscribed neatly in ink to the upper corners, modest toning, overall a very fine copy.

FIRST NEW YORK EDITION WITH KEY'S LYRICS AND JOHN STAFFORD SMITH'S STIRRING MUSIC OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.
Francis Scott Key's stirring verses were inspired by a shipboard vigil on the night of September 13-14, 1814, while British warships bombarded Fort McHenry, outside Baltimore. Key, a young lawyer, had boarded a British vessel ship to seek the release of an American physician held prisoner. During of the bombardment, Key was detained and spent the night on deck, watching the British rain shells onto the fort. During the British assault, a large stars and stripes flag flew over the fort but during the bombardment it was obscured by smoke. Key feared the fort had surrendered. When the smoke of battle died down and the flag could be clearly seen, Key's emotions were powerfully stirred. His first draft of what became the national anthem was written on the back of a letter to the tune of an English drinking tune "The Anacreontic Song," by John Stafford Smith. Broadside and newspaper printings of the verses appeared and it was widely performed by a traveling music company. The first sheet-music edition uniting Keys' lyrics and Smith's music appeared not later than 19 October from the press of J. Carr in Baltimore. It contains the mis-spelling "Pariotic" in the heading; amended to "Patriotic" in a second issue (Muller 1a). A Philadelphia printing from the press of A. Bacon followed, ornamented with a woodcut of a furled flag (Muller 2). The anthem was next published in New York by the firm of Geib & Co. (Muller 3). Muller dates the Geib edition between 1816 to 1817, adding that (as in the present copy) "An issue of this edition also appeared with the notation, '25 cents,' following the address in the publishers' imprint." THE GEIB EDITION IS RARE: a recent census tallies copies in 15 institutions and 5 additional copies held by collectors and in the trade.

His work treats of hydrocele and other diseases of the testes, including testicular neoplasms, and recounts the three-year suffering of one patient, Jose Palacios; he reports, in detail, on the various consulting doctors that Palacios saw and on their treatment methods until a successful one was found. The work ends (pp. 35–39) with "Versos que hizo D. José Palacios para manifestar su gratitud á los dignos profesores." => The patient and the doctors were all resident in Mexico City. The online cataloguing of this book is an amazing example of copy-cataloguing from an initial poor record. The cataloguer of that initial record misunderstood the Medina entry and thought that Medina's "port." meant "portrait," when in fact it means "title-page"; that cataloguer then recorded that library's copy as "lacking the portrait." And the error was perpetuated again, and again, and again by five of the ten Anglo-American libraries reporting ownership. => One of the few medical works printed by this famous woman printer. Original plain wrappers. Very nice.

Defence of Fort McHenry [The Star-Spangled Banner]

Philadelphia: Thomas Moses, 1814. Pamphlet. Very Good. 8vo. A very early printing, published on two pages within the Analectic Magazine in November, 1814. Clean pages with very light wear. Francis Scott Key first penned what was to become the national anthem of the United States on 15 Sep 1814 as a prisoner on a warship the day after watching the British fleet's failed bombardment of Ft. McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. Key gave his hand-written poem, which he titled "The Defence of Fort McHenry," to his brother-in-law, Joseph H. Nicholson, who had a number of broadsides printed (only two survive). On the 20th of September, the poem was printed in two Baltimore newspapers, and shortly thereafter it was republished in a handful of newspapers along the east coast as well as a piece of sheet music by a Baltimore music store. After its first public performance a Baltimore tavern in October, the song's rising popularity caught the attention of Washington Irving, the editor of the Analectic Magazine, published the lyrics in the November edition of his journal.

War of 1812 American Militia Letter - The Siege of Fort Erie

New York, 1814. Letter. Very Good. This important three-page folio-sized manuscript letter reports on the American actions at the Siege of Fort Erie during September of 1814 including the sorties attacking British artillery batteries and the death of General Daniel Davis, the leader of the New York Militia. The handwritten letter is complete and legible. It shows some storage creases and has a few small splits along the folds. One fold has an old tape reinforcement that is beginning to discolor. A transcript of the letter is included. The American defense of Fort Erie was successful as the British forces incurred heavy losses in their assault on the fort, during the American sorties, and as a result of exposure to the elements. Blackmer was an early settler in Oneida County, New York where after initially constructing a fortified tavern on the road between Onondaga and Westmoreland, he established a large farm and donated land for a Baptist meeting-house and school. In August of 1814 at the meeting-house, the Reverend Solomon Brown read the initial dispatch from Niagara that British forces were beginning to surround Fort Erie. Subsequently, a number of Oneida militia men, including Blackmer's son, Ephraim and Jirah, volunteered to defend Buffalo and help lift the siege. Nehimiah Jones was a well-respected Revolutionary War veteran from Massachusetts who had moved to Westmoreland, New York. His son, Pomroy, served in the New York militia during the War of 1812.

Spine varnished and somewhat worn. Traces of wear throughout, occasional minor spotting and with old ink and pencil markings in the margins. Title leaf in part I in a rather weak impression. Signature and unidentified black oval stamp on title in the first part. All published. According to his son-in-law Johannes Sundblad, Sven Magnus Liedzén was the chronicler and publisher of this work. This statement is incorrect, but Liédzen may have been and important contributor to the text, since he knew the author A. A. Afzelius since their childhood in the county of Västergötland, from where a large part of the folk dances which are reproduced here originates. War of 1812 Manuscript Memorandum Book

Lancaster County, Virginia, 1814. Paper Wrapper. Very Good. Handmade, string-bound 4" x 6" booklet with 24 pages, ten of which have been used. Worn cover. Binding holding, but slightly loose. Several leaves have been clipped from the rear of the book. The rear cover is titled "Memorandum Book" in ink, the book has several pencil annotations in a different hand referencing Heber Currie (b 1855). There are other indistinct markings on the cover. Ellyson A. Currie Sr. was Heber's grandfather and his great-grandfather was David Currie, a wealthy Episcopalian minister with a 1,000 acre glebe in Lancaster County, Virginia, upon which his forty slaves raised corn and grain. Ellyson Currie, Sr. became a lawyer and judge in the county and served in the House of Delegates. Although he lived on a much smaller property, Ellyson still owned over thirty slaves that census records suggest he rented to other planters. The first entry in the book is dated 1814. This book contains four pages of detailed instruction, probably to his son, Ellyson Jr., for managing the Currie property while he was away; as the Quartermaster of the 92nd Regiment of Virginia Militia, Ellyson Sr. was called to active duty away from home on four occasions during 1814. His guidance addresses provender, dung, weevils, potatoes, mending railings, sheep and cattle, hogs, tools (plows, hoes, etc.), the still, house security, hired hands, and possible live-in help. The book contains several records of payments including two to Billy and Ellie, "free negro lad(s)." A unique and important personal record of a citizen-soldier's preparation for deployment during the War of 1812.

XVII-XVIII secolo]., [Italia, - Libro manoscritto in-4° (cm. 20), legatura coeva in cartonato (lievi usure e restauri); cc. nn. [p.3]. Da studiare. Interessante e in buono stato.
